Book Description

The Rise and Fall of Artist's Soho documents how a little-known industrial neighborhood in New York unintentionally became--for a brief period--a nexus of creative activity. Part personal memoir, part cultural history, the book examines how a group of urban pioneers were able to transform a neighborhood, while also creating new and classic works of American art, music, dance, and theater.
Taking advantage of loft occupancy laws that allowed artists to live in buildings not available to the general public, a band of enterprising and creative people began settling in New York's SoHo (so called because it lies South of Houston Street), renovating previously industrial spaces for personal living and work space. Fueled by word-of-mouth-and unsupported either by local or national governments or wealthy individuals-the area grew to be a center for artistic creation. This book not only discusses how the artists came and why, it also focuses on some of the most creative, describing both their lives and work.
Such an ideal situation-totally unplanned-could not last forever; the author shows how market forces squeezed out this art utopia, to be replaced by a shadow of itself, "SoMall," with the coming of trendy chain stores, boutiques, and restaurants. European tourists crowd the streets, but the real SoHo is long gone, never to be recreated in quite the same way again.
For anyone interested in the history of New York's Bohemian neighborhoods or the art and culture of the last 3 decades, SoHo is must reading.

2 out of 5 stars Rambling.......2004-03-03

Author Kostelanetz was a long-time Soho resident and writes a personal account about the history of Soho as an artist's neighborhood. The most interesting parts of the book are the beginning in which he describes Soho's slow transformation from a daytime industrial district into the thriving artist colony it was to become. I lived in lower Manhattan for much of the same period and can recall many of the people and places he describes.

The problem with this book is that there is no story, no narrative trajectory, no structure. The chapters appear to be loosley based on certain themes, although even those are hard to discern at times. There's nothing chronological; it's just a rambling collection of reminiscences with no cohesion or thread to hold it together or make it engaging. The author's nostalgic point of view (criticized in the Publisher's Weekly review above) would be fine if he stayed with it and honed in on it; but as is, it's just an uneven mish-mash of nostalgia and memories weaving in and out of splatterings of facts, with no order or trajectory. I have to honestly say I only got halfway through this book, so it may have improved by the end. But it just wasn't worth it for me to force myself through what felt like literary packing peanuts when there's so much other good stuff out there to read.

It needn't be this way. For example, Legs McNeil authored an excellent history of punk rock taking place mostly in New York at about the same time as this book (see "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk" elsewhere on Amazon.com). The latter shows that a recent period of New York history can be conveyed in oral remembrances in a way that both informs and captivates the reader. Such an approach would have taken more labor and forethought -- something that is sorely lacking in this volume.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Chinese fans from a Chinese point of view.......2004-12-04

This book on fans is written from a purely Chinese point of view. It deals not with the fans China made for the west (Mandarin fans and elaborate ivory brise fans), but with those that were made for local use and taste.

First we are given a history of Chinese fans dating back to prehistoric times, quoting numerous examples of ancient fans found in archaeological digs over the last 50-60 years. It also deals with the methods of making fans -both for sticks and leaves and how they have changed over the centuries. There is also a section of painters noted for their fans whose work is highly esteemed within China. This portion of the book, almost more than any other, gives a good feel for how knowledge the West lacks on native Chinese fans. Many 'Great' artists and calligraphers are mentioned that have almost no references in Western art books on Chinese art.

My only disappointment with this small volume is that many of the masterpieces mentioned in the text do not necessarily have corresponding photos. The author seems to assume that the reader would be familiar with these artists. While this may hold true in China this book almost breaks new ground in the west in dealing with Chinese fan painting and manufacturing in English. This book should be part of any fan collectors reference works if you have an interest in Chinese fans.

Since then, I have bought several copies for friends who have lost loved ones. I have had to purchase more for myself, as I keep giving them to other people.

This book is really a treasure! Not only for the almost 70 (page
high 8x10) angel pictures but also for the hunderds of stories
about angel encounters and the wise and interesting informa-
tion about angels. And 372 big pages. It is really a book about/from Heaven! (Sorry for my bad englisch)

3 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Angels: Angelic Encounters, etc........2002-11-21

This book was a little disappointing. It has wonderful illustrations, but not what I expected in the way of communicating with one's angels. There was too much information on Biblical angels and Bible references to angelic occurrences. Still the book is worth perusing, especially the last half. I would recommend it to anyone new to the "angel" world.

Is the conspiracy bug getting to you, too? If not, it soon will, especially after you check out The Big Book of the Unexplained, the companion book to The Big Book of Conspiracies. Self-proclaimed conspiracy nut Doug Moench is joined by a variety of comics artists such as Joe Sacco, J. H. Williams, Paul Gulacy, Brent Anderson, Russ Heath, and Gahan Wilson to present new tales of strange phenomena, bizarre happenings, and mysterious goings-on. And if you're bummed out about the Loch Ness monster hoax, get ready for the new "could-be" monster: La Chupacabra. Haven't heard of this creature? Then go ahead, buy this book.

Have fun with this series, they are wonderful! So much fun, a delight to read. Not quite as good as the Big book of conspiracies, but still great!

3 out of 5 stars Very choppy, not up to the quality of the series.......2004-11-16

The Big Book of the Unexplained seeks to explore unexplained phenomena in comic book form. Subjects touched on include: aliens, the Loch Ness monster, glass skulls, mummy curses and many perhaps too many more.

There are some obvious benefits to exploring such phenomena in graphical form. Namely a picture is worth a thousand words. After all when one is talking about a photo of a UFO or the Nazga plains, having the visual evidence there is much better than describing the visual evidence. That's a nice theory but it doesn't happen. Almost all the illustrations are artist's conceptions. Also because there are no photographs, only artist's drawings from photographs, this book actually eliminates or distorts visual evidence for UFOs and Nessie. In both cases photos exist and have been central to debates on the existence of the phenomena so it is stupid to omit photos.

This book could have used some focus. It has something like 40 chapters each covering a different topic and some as short as two pages. However the topics tend to overlap and so does the information presented. For example the same photo allegedly of Nessie's flipper is brought up and referenced in bad drawings at least three times. This leads me to believe the book was very poorly outlined before being written. Coverage of subjects is broad, not deep and sources for information aren't given, so The Big Book of the Unexplained is sure to disappoint scholars and the curious alike.

The Big Book of the Unexplained fails. Avoid this book. It isn't up to the quality of other books in The Big Book of.. series. At most one could pull some names and dates (which aren't always given) from the book and go from there.

5 out of 5 stars Inexplicable.......2002-09-11

This book is a great collection of bizarre phenomena. The artwork, as is typical of Factoid Books, is just beautiful, and I often find myself reading the same passages over and over again. A true must-have for any lover of the unexplained. My only qualms about it are that some of the "facts" are copied verbatim from their sources (I've looked), but it's permissible in the face of the overall achievement. Buy it today.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the "Big Book of" series.......2002-08-29

I've owned just about all of the "Big Book of" series published to date, and this is clearly the best. In fact, it is the only one I kept when it was time to move and I needed to lighten the load. It is just so darn entertaining- and you find something new every time you pick it up. That is why I bought it in the first place, instead of being a rehashing of stuff that I already knew about for years, I actually learned some significant new things. If you are jaded and think that there is "nothing new under the sun" try reading this, it will expand your horizons. It covers everything from crop circles, synchronicity, the crystal skull, ancient high tech, space/time anomalies, alternate dimensions, alien abduction, death of the 5th sun, etc., etc., etc....
And it is all tied together in a humorous way by the character of Charles Fort (The Book of the Damned.)

5 out of 5 stars Not Meant to Win Over People in Denial.......2001-06-16

This book is usually advertised as a companion to the Big Book of Conspiracies. Although both are written by Doug Moench, this is not really true. There IS some crossover (for example the BBOC deals with some supposed coverups of UFOs, and UFOs are featured prominently in this book), but only superficially.
As noted by one harsh reviewer below, this book does not go very far into presenting evidence. However, I know that many of the stories covered in this book are actually just as well-documented as most historical facts having read about them elsewhere (in fact, when I lived in Waterloo, Ontario, I lived down the block from the owner of the famous crystal skull depicted in one of these stories). And if you require more proof, there is an extensive bibliography. What Doug Moench does is use his limited space (the comic book format is not very good for presenting vast reams of evidence) to give a nice overall picture of paranormal mysteries. He even manages to point out various patterns, connecting together incidents usually only covered in isolation. And this is an important contribution, after all by now people who actually pay attention to evidence should have reached the point where they are more interested in understanding the phenonmena described instead of just trying to justify their beliefs. Of course, some of the stories herein are based merely on testimony given by witnesses, but eyewitness testimony is considered the strongest form of evidence by the courts and is still enough to get people sentenced to jail for life in this country (meanwhile fingerprints are only circumstantial). What matters is the credibility of the witnesses, how many unconnected individuals corroborate each other, and whether or not there is an ulterior motive for such testimony. Besides it would be ridiculous to reject all data on the basis of a few charlatans (after all we still believe in science depsite apparent hoaxes like cold fusion). And for every redneck there is still the occassional Jimmy Carter and Neil Armstrong who have also reported witnessing UFOs. If all people could be so readily dismissed for what they say or write on other subjects, no field of knowledge (history, science, etc.) could exist! But I prefer to be amongst the camp of people who, e.g., do not have to personally build and explode atom bombs or travel back in time 56 years to Japan to believe that the bombing of Hiroshima occured (the photographs, consistent testimony, etc., is enough for me). This book does (and it admits so) go out on the limb occassionally, but it does also point out some incontrovertible facts that skeptics just choose to ignore. But even if you lean more towards skepticism, this is a highly entertaining and well-illustrated book that is far more credible than the Warren Commission or most newspaper coverage of the Middle-East.

5 out of 5 stars Meditation for Kids (and other beings).......2003-02-04

This little book is all a person needs to begin the practice of meditation. Clear, concise, practical, easy to use. I wish I could have found it when I first began to learn to meditate. So many meditation books are thick and verbous; all the different approaches can be confusing. I practice Zen (generally minus Buddhism) and this book is "beginner's mind" at its best! It has no religious leanings or content. It doesn't talk about anything except "just sitting". The process is very, very clear. I bought this book for my 8 year old son who does some sitting. He related to it and understood it very well. I gave it to a 20 year old who is just beginning to meditate and it helped her to jump-start her practice. I buy up copies to give out to people who show an interest in learning to meditate.

3 out of 5 stars It wasn't what I expected.......2001-07-12

The book wasn't really what I expected. I knew it was a childrens book but not this extent. I counted around 607 words total in this book on 64 pages. That's about 9.5 words per page. More than half of the book is simply saying that anyone can benefit from meditation. Only about 6 pages were actually giving instructions. I thought this book would pack a little more in the way of content.

5 out of 5 stars Meditation for all us kids.......1999-12-24

What a gift this little book is. Indeed, a little book with big ideas, all simply put. This is THE book for anyone interested in exploring mindfulness meditation. A "Be Here Now" for the new Millenium. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Meditation For All Us Kids.......1999-12-24

What a wonderful introduction to meditation for kids of all ages! Fisher Huck has distilled the heart of Buddhist meditation into a small, humorous book all of us can understand and appreciate and learn from. Read this book, then buy a copy for a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Essential.......1999-10-04

It was pure serendipity when I chanced on this book in the browsing halls of Barnes & Noble. It approached introducing the subject of meditation to kids, with a deft, humorous and knowing touch. The little, irreverent liner notes on page 12 were perfect in terms of striking the right note and grabbing the attention of an 11 and 5 yearold who were interested but certainly not entranced with the subject ( as they are with the brain-numbing substance marketed as 'Pokemon'!) This little book is something one can return to over and over again - the only thing I would add is a little practical two-minute exercise in being still and becoming aware. Please keep doing what you are doing, Ms Fisher Huck. Peace of mind is in our palms but so aften out of our grasp. Thanks for reminding me of that.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for journalists needing background.......2002-09-06

I've seen similar books produced for the youth market, but this one is remarkable for actually being well researched (a step many of these sort of books skip!), concise and thorough. Though apparently created for the youth market, this is a volume which I'd recommend to journalists or any members of the media who may need to quickly access succinct, accurate background information. A perfect, slim volume to have on hand. Numerous sidebars augment the entries, and it includes an index (always appreciated). The neutral, intelligent tone - neutrality being somewhat rare for topics such as these - is most welcome and will serve the reader well.

In the past, for a comprehensive overview of alien encounters I'd have steered people towards Alien Discussions, the voluminous (600+ page) proceedings of a conference held at MIT in 1995; an event co-chaired by Harvard's Dr. John Mack which brought together a diverse range of academics for a rare, comprehensive exploration of the alien encounter experience.

This slim 168 page almanac has nearly bested that 600+ page volume, owing to the solid effort that Eric Elfman obviously put into making it as comprehensive and succinct as humanly possible (no pun intended). And the sketches are nice, too.

5 out of 5 stars A good author!.......2001-10-24

This author has a series of Almanac's that are great! I look for his name and when I read a book by him, I know it's going to be informative and honest, fascinating and fun. He also writes good fiction. I reccommend this book highly.

In the 1850s, a wealthy British philanthropist by the name of Lord Dufferin sailed his yacht into the Arctic Circle and wrote the bestselling travelogue Letters from High Latitudes. In the 1990s, British writer Tim Moore decided to follow Dufferin's steps--by boat, plane, and bike. This retracing of Dufferin's travels across Iceland, into Norway, and to Spitzbergen (prompted when Moore reads the Lord's 19th-century memoir) is told in a lively, self-deprecating style and starts out brimming with funny anecdotes and interesting tidbits, particularly about Iceland, a report-happy land where the government commissions studies about "the effects of centrifugal force at roundabouts" and where "53 percent of the Icelanders believe in elves."

While Moore continues to unleash an often funny ramble about his northern excursion, something happens mid-book around the time he learns he's lost a work-related lawsuit back in England: perhaps Moore's mind is disintegrating in the polar blasts or he's lost his will to sustain an audience, but the writer's style becomes more manic, his recorded observations are frequently peppered with the base and crude, and his obsession changes from the travels of Lord Dufferin to the fate of one of Dufferin's colleagues, Wilson. The same writing voice that keeps one amused through the first half of the book starts to annoy by the end, as Moore stops providing much relevant info, and instead goes on at great lengths about the price of hot dogs, his nights of drinking and frequent bouts of nausea. Too disgusting in parts to warrant a recommendation to those easily shocked, this jumbled travelogue is nevertheless an often entertaining look into Tim Moore's personal Arctic madness. --Melissa Rossi

      Book Description

Guided by the fastidious journals of an eminent Victorian adventurer by the name of Lord Dufferin, Tim Moore sets off to prove his mettle in the most stunningly inhospitable place on Earth-the Arctic. Armed only with his searing wit, wicked humor, and seasickness pills, our pale suburbanite-wracked by second thoughts of tactical retreat-confronts mind-numbing cold, blood-thirsty polar bears, a convoy of born-again Vikings, and, perhaps most chilling of all, herring porridge. When he is not humiliating himself through displays of ignorance and incompetence, Moore casts a sharp eye on the local flora and fauna, immersing readers in the splendors and wonders of this treacherously beautiful region. A deliciously and inexhaustibly funny book, Frost on My Moustache deserves to be placed alongside those by Evelyn Waugh, Eric Newby, and Bill Bryson. AUTHORBIO: Tim Moore's writing has appeared in the Sunday Times, the Independent, the Observer, and the Evening Standard. He lives in West London.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh till you hurt........2007-02-11

As you can see from other reviews, this book isn't for everyone. But if you like quirky humor; give it a try. This was the funniest book I have read in years even though my wife thought I was crazy as I often laughed so much that it hurt! If you have not traveled in Britain or read a bit of contemporary British writing, you will miss some of his humor but it is still well worth reading. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Humor on Ice.......2007-02-05

In this book, Moore attempts to retrace the derring-do of Victorian maverick diplomat/aristocrat Lord Dufferin as he explores Iceland, the coast of Norway, the 32-mile-wide, rising-from-the-sea Arctic volcano Jan Mayen and the barrens of Spitzbergen in the Greenland Sea. Despite more modern travel transport systems, Moore is hilariously unable to achieve the same milestones, and strives then to emulate the gloomy suffering of Dufferin's servant, Wilson. Dry and droll. Not recommended by the Spitzbergen Chamber of Commerce.

5 out of 5 stars Brutally self-effacing humor (humour!) of the highest sort.......2006-08-19

Impossible to read sober, impossibly complex to be reading drunk, I'm still not sure what the author does for a living, but I know it's one of the funniest, most complex travelogues I've ever read.

If you are interested in the North --as in the far north including Iceland and the like-- then this is the way to go.

What does the title mean? I can't ruin it, but it's fantastic. The best ...... of all!

The rest of the book? A classic "made up" travelog in the sense that the author simply creates a journey, goes on it, and writes about it.

With style. And big words/sentences/paragraphs. And laughter. Much laughter.

The title does give a hint of his style: "Exploits of a Lord & Loafer." Accurate.

In the same way that Bill Bryson uses 3 words to conjure up the most vivid picture in my mind, Tim Moore uses complex, nearly poetic language to the same effect -- and the same laugh-out-loud guffaws of pure joy at such fantastic wit.

Cheers to Tim. Next time, I'd just like it if he used shorter sentences to keep my brain from blowing.

5 out of 5 stars Whinging and Cringing After Dufferin.......2003-06-20

It says everything about this book, really, that the title comes from an intensely colloquial joke that is too obscene to repeat here. Frost on My Moustache is a travel humor book that focuses far more on humor and cursing than it does on the travel. But what it lacks in actual information it more than makes up for in laughter - the kind of oh-god-just-let-me-take-another-breath laughter that can lead to hospitalization, insanity, and inexplicable joy. However, Moore - and his book - aren't for everyone.

Moore is very colloquially British - he uses lots of pop culture references that will not be obvious to most Americans (or Europeans or Australians or...). He's also very much like a certain kind of aging college student: perpetually intoxicated, foul-mouthed, inclined to rant and whine. But despite it all, he's lots of fun, and while you might not like him, you'll love reading about his travels.

The word that most often gets used in Tim Moore book reviews is "Bryson." The comparisons between Tim Moore and Bill Bryson are apparently unavoidable. And, to a certain extent, they hold true: both writers are very funny, both are extremely tightfisted, both spend an awful lot of time complaining. But Moore is not Bryson. At most, he could be described as an embryo Bryson - he hasn't yet learned the secrets of a wide appeal, a cultivated air, or a dignified approach to life. Moore curses, he wails, he throws regular temper tantrums, he's sulky and lazy and fixated. And he eats a lot of hot dogs. Don't expect thoughtful cultural exposition, insightful observations, or descriptions of the local cuisine from him.

But I promise you: if you pick up Frost on My Moustache, you will experience frequent bouts of all-out hysteria. This book is well worth buying and reading, not once, but again and again.

1 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this book, but..........2003-04-15

... I could only suffer through 17 pages before putting it down for good. The prose seemed deliberately obfuscated and gossipy, and the way it was presented was so far from compelling that I had to read the back cover to figure out what he was droning on about.

Now if the book delivered what the back cover promised, that would have been great. And maybe it did. But I found myself easily distracted and completely without any understanding of what he was talking about.

Maybe if I was English, some of the names and places would have been more familiar. So I can't recommend this book, even though it sounds like it would have been fascinating, to hear reviewers tell it.
