Book Description
India is a land of contrasts. It is the world's most populous democracy, but it still upholds the caste system. It is a burgeoning economic superpower, but one of the poorest nations on earth. It is the home of the world's biggest movie industry after Hollywood, as well as to the world's oldest religions. It is an ancient civilization celebrating fifty years as a modern nation. Now, as never before, the world wants to know what contemporary India is all about.
As she has proved in three previous books--her wry take on the marketing of the mystic East in Karma Cola; the rich historical saga of Raj; and the beguiling tales of A River Sutra--there is no better guide to India's multihued mosaic than Gita Mehta. She knows India in all its rich detail--its folkways and history, its culture and politics, its ancient traditions and current concerns. In Snakes and Ladders, she gives a loving but unflinching assessment of India today, in an account that is entertaining, informative, and wholly personal.

Excellent reading on India.......2003-11-04
I have read many books describing the life, culture and natives of India. Being an Indian, I must say that this book was not only a good narration of India but also came close to real India on many aspects. The collection of essays is great and covers many aspects with interesting and ammusing language. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested to know about life in India.
an easy to digest examination of modern India.......2001-09-01
I knew next to nothing about modern India, so I learned a lot from these breezy essays. Sure they wonder all over the place -- chapters jump from political topics to the draught to Indian yuppies, but for the casual reader, the essays are very entertaining and informatative. The effect is that of reading several short travelogues about India all in a row. Mehta writes well and makes some sharp observations about India's political development. I wanted to see more description of the various parts of India (the desert like areas versus the huge cities and vast fertile plains) because it is a land of such great contrasts. Most of the essays left me wanting to know more. I enjoyed the personal anecdotes from the author's childhood. Not a history book, but a good and easy to read overview for the Indian novice.
Fluffy.......2001-04-15
Lacking in depth and daring, this book is entirely unexceptional. Elsewhere one of the readers of Snakes and Ladders cites A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, now that is a wonderful novel. It delivers more information, more emotion, more understanding than this little book of magazine-like essays. I was very disappointed in Snakes and Ladders, thought it a waste of time and money. Read a Fine Balance, it's glorious.

The Whole Masala.......2001-03-31
In the past six months I've read at least twice that many books about India, and of them all "Snakes and Ladders" and Wm. Dalyrmple's "City of Djins" have been the best. Gita Mehta is an exceptional writer who manages to combine fact and emotion in a series of elequent essays. The last 50 years in Indian history - her first 50 years of independence - are a swirl of social change in a country that is aswril in its every moment. When you think "India" you must think of a dance of a billion richly colored veils. Ms. Mehta plucks veil after veil from the dance and by describing the veil she describes India. It's a remarkable achievement, and a real insiders view into the politics, arts, and life of an extremely complex nation. Ms. Mehta captures India in a short 220 pages and in doing so presents a view that other authors might take volumes to display. Highly, highly recommended!

In his outstanding first volume of autobiography, A Postillion Struck by Lightning, Dirk Bogarde retraced his childhood and early experiences on the stage. In Snakes and Ladders, he continues his memoirs, from the trials of army training camp to the greatest challenge of his film career—the role of von Aschenbach in Death in Venice. Book Description
The writer's thoughts, feelings, comments, letters, dreams and stories have been recorded over a period of more than twenty years. Through these revelations, one can follow a coarse thread, which has, at times, been broken and tied together again. Written in diary format he touches on sex, religion, astronomy, astrology, birth and death, as well as a whole range of emotions; from anger and hate...to love. Never intending this collection to be read by others, it comes across very intimately, and with a fair amount of humour. This certainly shows how the dice have fallen in his life of Snakes and Ladders.

Based on the successful Snakes and Ladders drama programme developed at Great Ormond Street Hospital, The NHS Experience uses the story of Daniel and his family to provide insight into the challenges faced by those involved with the NHS, in whatever capacity.
Illustrating issues central to improving patient care, Daniel's story initiates discussions on topics such as:
o The practical, ethical, resource and financial dilemmas integral to the NHS.
o The need for trust between individuals, professionals and organizations connected to the NHS.
o Communication, management of clinical errors, the ethics of consent and bereavement care.
o Fragmented care, bed shortages, drug errors, complex and difficult treatment choices.
This useful manual contains good practice guidance, illustrative quotes and pointers to further information. It is an accessible and engaging guide for all those journeying through the NHS, whether as patients, carers or professionals.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Karl, Andrea, Ahira, Lou and Walter are stuck in the fantasy game world. It is a little bit different now as they are used to it, so this becomes more of a standard fantasy adventure type novel.
They become good guys, and fight to oppose a bunch of wizards and slavers.
Still Great.......2005-09-01
I can't believe these books are out of print. I originally bought them as a single hardcover collection from a book club. This takes up right where The Sleeping Dragon left off. There is no drop off in quality and it certainly feels like the 2nd part of a greater story and not some forced sequel. It also is an interesting social commentary on the ills of slavery.
Fine fantasy, but aimless.......2003-04-07
The Sword and the Chain, while still a quick, entertaining read, lacks the unique appeal that The Sleeping Dragon had. The characters, having been imported into a Dungeons & Dragons world from our own, are now completely ensconced and resigned to staying. There is no longer any disconnect between the characters and their setting and, except for a certain sense of greater superiority, there is little to distinguish our heroes from any other fantasy character. Also problematic is that the narrative focus has shifted entirely onto Karl Cullinane, leaving the far more interesting Ahira in a side-kick role. There is, however, an intriguing plot development involving erstwhile professor Deighton, whose resolution appears to await later books.
Like The Sleeping Dragon, The Sword and the Chain is an incredibly quick read. It's not always enjoyable (do we really need to read about disembowelments that sound like a wet fruit exploding?), but it is a fine distraction from our own daily lives. A worthwhile read for any fantasy fan.
The Quest Continues.......2001-11-09
The second book in the Guardians of the Flame series returns the reader to the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Karl, Andrea, Ahira, Walter, and Lou are stuck in a strange world in the bodies of the characters they created and played. These friends are bound to this world through a pledge to bring freedom to the world. They made their pledges to save the life of a friend. Now Karl and his friends must wage a war on slavery, fighting against Wizards and the Slaver's Guild. With the aid of the young dragon Ellegon, from the first novel, Karl and his friends start trying to fulfill their promise. The two books in this series that I have read so far have read mostly like you would expect a Dungeons & Dragons adventure to be. The characters have to adapt to the strange world of magic, with only their wits and the instincts of their bodies. There is, of course, the obligatory quest, and plenty of magic and spells. This book is interesting, easy reading. Do not expect many plot intricacies, but do expect to enjoy the developing story of the Guardians of the Flame.
Joel Rosenberg has outdone himself!.......2001-08-02
I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with this outing. While most sequels are stale and transparent, Joel Rosenberg manages to take up where The Sleeping Dragon left off and create a mystical tale that keeps the readers attention from the first page to the last.
Admittedly, I let out a yelp of joy when Karl announced to the slaver, "Tell you masters that I am hunting them!" It showed a glimmer of what was to come in this series (especially this installment), and it did not disappoint.
I won't allow myself to announce any spoilers for those who haven't enjoyed this, but let me say that it was delightfully intriguing when the secret of Deighton was revealed. The implications of this information should have an enormous impact in future volumes.

Book Description
This is the fourth book written by Richard Sampson on the penetration of Europeans into what was called Northern Rhodesia, the lives they led there and now their subsequent dispersal. Published over a period of forty-six years the four books collectively provide essential reading for any person making a study of the life of Europeans in the colony during the colonial era.
This latest book, a personal memoir, provides much detail about Lusaka in the third quarter of the twentieth century, woven around the story of the author's own life there. The commentary on business, political, municipal and military incidents occurring as the country moved out of its colonial past into a newly independent African-governed life as Zambia makes valuable and entertaining reading.
Book Description
Of all the experiences shared by Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise during their first five-year mission, two were among the most perilous: a journey to the nonphysical realm of Transition where the massive computer known as Memory Prime was situated, and the nightmarish mission to Talin IV, a world poised on the brink of destruction that Kirk was forbidden to save. In the twenty-third century, a hundred years before a sentient artificial life-form would be allowed to earn a Starfleet commission, the Federation considers the use of self-aware artificial intelligences to be little more than slavery, except for the immense computer system of Memory Prime -- the key hub in the Federation's vast network of interstellar library planets. There, the A.I.s known as Pathfinders inhabit Transition -- a virtual world so different from our universe that the A.I.s themselves debate whether or not the physical universe is real. But when an ancient enemy reaches out from the shadows of Vulcan's darkest history and threatens to destroy the Federation, Spock must risk his career, and his life, to enter the Pathfinders' realm. Technologically and politically, Talin IV is little different from late-twentieth century Earth. But as a series of mysterious events pushes that world closer to self-annihilation, the Prime Directive prevents Captain Kirk and his crew from doing anything to prevent it. When the worst appears to happen and Kirk takes desperate action to give the Talin a chance to step back from the nuclear abyss, Talin IV is consumed by radioactive fire. Now, with a world destroyed and the Enterprise dead in space, the careers of Kirk and his crew are over. Disgraced and despised, Kirk has only one chance to redeem himself and his crew: Somehow, he must make his way back to Talin IV and discover what really happened, even if it means proving that a world died because he broke Starfleet's most sacred law. Bonus: An Exclusive Interview with the Authors
Customer Reviews:
Good stories!.......2007-01-24
Let's say you've done the most basic reading on this site and realize that this book consists of two previously published stories, with very tiny font. Are the STORIES worth it? Absolutely.
Prime Directive, in my opinion, is one of the very best Star Trek novels out of the hundreds that have been written. It's incredibly tightly written, well-placed, and seamlessly weaves together 5 different narratives to bring the entire crew together for an astonishing sci-fi climax. Fantastic character moments for every major crewmember of the Enterprise, great humor involving some Orion pirates, nuclear wars- this book has got it all. The ending is one of the most imaginative, science-fictiony climaxes of any Star Trek book, and makes you appreciate the wonder of the universe (or multiverse).
Memory Prime is nowhere near as good, but it's still above average. Frankly, this whole book is worth it for Prime Directive; think of Memory Prime as a bonus. If you haven't read Prime Directive and you can stand the small font, get this book now. (Otherwise, get the regular edition of Prime Directive with bigger font!)
Two great Star Trek stories packaged together.......2005-12-18
Like a lot of industries, the Star Trek "corporation" is intent on making profits. That is the nature of the beast, giving customers what they want. Worlds in Collision is a repackaging of two other Star Trek stories: Memory Prime, and Prime Directive. I hadn't read these as separate books, so I was delighted to get both full-length books, packaged together, at a very reasonable price. Woo-hoo!
These are great Star trek stories, full of intrigue, and rich with the Star Trek personality development I expected. Of the two, I liked Prime Directive the most, but the galaxy is a pretty big place, and I really don't like it when folk, scattered throughout the quadrant, seem to show up at the same place at the same time. Literary license, I guess.
Good for reading level 7 and up. I look forward to discovering additional bargains!
Preying On The Collectors Out There.......2004-10-29
Cheers to Mr. Hockinson for providing a truthful, yet comical, review of this book. Take his advice and save your eyesight, as well as your money. Don't succumb to the urge to fill out your collection by buying books you probably already have in more readable type. Just as Star Trek: The Original Series DVD Collection was sold as two episode discs and now is offered in Season Sets, repackaging stunts are aimed at getting fans to own multiple copies of their favorites. Live Long And Prosper!
Eye strain ahead, Mr. Scott!.......2004-02-14
How does a publisher reissue two full-length novels (with a page count well over 700 pages) in less than 440 pages? By using a ridiculously small type point that's how:
"Eye strain ahead, Mr. Scott! Analysis, Mr. Spock."
"Captain, it would appear that Star Trek books has created a reissue series identified as 'Signature Editions' designed to drain the wallets of completist Trekkers who must own everything. Both these novels are readily available in easier to read type size editions from this very site. Purchasing this version is...illogical."
"Yes, Bones?"
"Damn it, Jim! I'm a surgeon, not an eye doctor! I've got a dozen people in sick bay with headaches from trying to read 'Worlds in Collision'."
"Shields up, Mr. Sulu! Set a course away from this turkey, warp factor two."
"Aye, sir. Ahead warp factor two."
Classic Trek Recycled.......2003-11-25
The Signature Editions are very nice trade paper books. The only thing that isn't made too clear until you dig a little deeper (past the introduction) is that these books are compilations of two or three previously published books. In this case, Worlds in Collision is made up of "Memory Prime" and "Prime Directive." The descriptions of the stories on the back cover don't say this. The only place in the book that makes mention of this is the copyright page, listing the original copyright dates for the two books.
I bought the book because I'd read "Prime Directive" shortly after it was out, but I had borrowed it from my sister-in-law, and I wanted a copy for myself. "Memory Prime" is a bonus for me, and I don't know if I will ever read it. They're nice for trade paper, and if you don't have the books in original form it can be a good buy - literally 2 or 3 for the price of one. "Imzadi Forever" is a compilation of "Imzadi" and "Triangle: Imzadi II." "The Q Continum" is made up of 3 TNG books: "Q-Space," "Q-Zone," and "Q-Strike," which make up an interesting trilogy. "Pantheon" is made up of "Reunion" and "The Valiant," and I haven't read either of those.
"Prime Directive" is a good story, with Kirk kicked out of Starfleet (along with everyone except Scotty) for violating the Prime Directive. It's a good story for Classic Trek fans.
There are some extras, which include an introduction, and a section with interviews from the authors. I don't know that these would be enough incentive for me to purchase the book if I owned one or both of the stories.
I would suggest that you purchase "Worlds in Collision" if you're a Classic Trek fan and haven't read either of the books it's made up of. "Prime Directive" is worth the money by itself.

very pleased.......2007-06-27
I purchased this book after someone online suggested it to me. I love the way it is divided up into seasons and that they include a convient shopping guide for you as well as alternatives to your normal side dishes.
good overall.......2007-05-15
It seems to be a pretty solid cookbook although I havent been using it in the order it prescribes yet,
What a Great Resource for Families!.......2007-03-09
I bought this book to replace a copy I borrowed from a friend and promptly wore out, because it was so handy. My husband is a very particular eater, and he hasn't liked most of the meals I've brought home from the meal prep places, like Super Suppers. But, he's enjoyed most of the meals I've made with Saving Dinner. And, with the menu and grocery list planned out by week, I don't spend the two hours menu planning and making up the grocery list. I even have had success with the crock-pot meals, which I haven't done well in the past with other recipes. (I do find that my slow cooker takes a lot less time than the recipe calls for, so I cut my cooking time by a couple of hours and use a meat thermometer to determine if it's done.)
The recipes are easy to make. The menus are grouped by season so that you can take advantage of produce at it's height. I find the book is most effective when you make every dish for the week, rather than pick and choose recipes. Then you can optimize the menu and grocery list. We've been pleasantly surprised when we do that even the dishes that we weren't too excited reading about have turned out to be tasty.
I may use this book to organize a meal planning night with friends once a month because I do miss that comaraderie you get at the meal prep places. It'll be interesting to see if that would be involved/easy or cost effective over the meal prep places.
Overall, this book is a huge timesaver, we may be able to use with friends to do some prep nights, has saved us money by keeping us out of the restaurants and drive-thru's, and we are around the dinner table more! It'd be a great gift for newlyweds. I wish I'd had something like YEARS ago!
Excellent food and we're losing weight!.......2007-02-19
I have about 30 Low Carb Cookbooks, and along with George Stella's two (which I love), this one is getting a LOT of use. One of the things I like about it is that you don't have to buy unusual items to make these meals...no guar gum, no flax seed, no whey protein powder, no things-you've-never-heard-of-and-don't-know-where-to-buy sort of ingredients. So far, only one recipe was mediocre (sauteed scallops on spinach). But the spiced pork chops tonight were great, and the bang-bang taco soup was easy and tasty. So was the Mediterranean Chicken. I think the shopping lists are an excellent idea, and I also like the idea of the seasonal menus (though I've been bouncing around from place to place in the book, making what sounds good and what's on sale at the supermarket.) Tomorrow's dinner? Chicken in Bourbon sauce. Can't wait.
Low-carb cooking.......2007-01-10
Very helpful book. A lot of great recipes that are not hard to do. The shopping lists tell you just what to get to have meals a week at a time.If I was an organized person that cooked this would be the perfect book to have!
