Book Description
Shimriti undertakes a train trip that transforms her sense of self. She understands that truth is a gift only available to those who are authentic. In this journey of philosophy by the hand of Shimriti and her master, Bucay places laughter on things that others frown upon, and poses simple ideas where others pose complicated ones. As in his previous books, Bucay illustrates with stories of different origins things that cannot be explained in an abstract manner.

An essay about memory.......2001-03-22
Like most of the Kundera's books I was sticked to it until i finish the reading. It's a very struggling story about people that has been auto-exilated.
This book can be seen as an essay about memory, cause Kundera presents the remembrances and hopes of the characters are so dissimilar about reality showing differences between man and woman feelings and perceptions.
I dislike Kundera's misogyny.
Could be one of Kunderaýs weakest, worth reading anyway.......2000-10-18
In "Ignorance", Milan Kundera maintains the same line of writing he has used in his previous works. He develops interesting characters and exposes their thoughts and feelings, maybe mixing them a little bit with specific subjects such as slowness, inmortality or ignorance. He usually does this with great results, his novels are mostly very entertaining and profund in some way. I said in a previous review that when you finish a book by Kundera you feel like you just had a great conversation. However, this doesn't happen with "Ignorance", it still is entertaining and all, but in a very forgetable way.

Book Description
*From the prolific creator of 18 manga titles including the best-selling series Escaflowne *TOKYOPOP to release animated series on DVD Fall 2005
The semester continues for Ai, Myu and Orina! Aura Hunters are on the loose and everyone's got to be careful, especially Ai. When Ai and Orina are out on the town, hunters are hot on their trail. Is the School President involved somehow?
Customer Reviews:
WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?.......2005-10-01
As Ai Shiomi begins his official try at dating Orina, he still faces the fact that his aura is 100% compatible with Mew, and there's no telling where that strange psychic connection will lead him. He loves Orina, but at times, against his will, his mind drifts to Mew. In a page out of the X-Men, a large group of normal humans, called Aura Hunters, launch an all-out assault on the Psychic Academy. They have no hope of beating down the super-powered residents. Their goal is to lose the battle, and play up the images of normal humans being hurt by the students to ferment an anti-Psychic movement! And how is the School President involved with the Aura Hunters?
While Psychic Academy is not going to win any awards for originality, I do find it quite enjoyable, even the shojo elements of Ai's floundering between his love for Orina and Mew. I really want to know who he is finally going to be with. The Class President plotline was a little cliched but the characters really make up for any shortcomings in this manga. Entertaining book!

Now Earth's scientists were there, determined to ferret out the secret of the lost race. Rare successful followup.......2003-12-20
Perhaps the reason this sequeal succeeds whereas the vast majority of others fail is that the author took off in a completely new direction, using the first book only as a stating point. This new saga reminds one of a children's tale in both style and simplicity of language. But the story is original and even exhilirating at times. The **** was entirely due to the development of the characters, none of whom are memorable or even likeable - too cartoonish. The Ganymedes (the giants) seem more like cardboard cutouts of what aliens should be - not who they really are. I guess I found them too anthropomorphic for my taste. This book opens the way for a third one.
Good Sequel.......2001-01-04
I'm glad Hogan wrote this story. Inherit the Stars is on my top 10 favorites list, and after reading it I wanted more, and that's just what Hogan does in this 1978 sequel (second in a series). It takes off where the first novel ended and continues to challenge and explore accepted concepts of humankind. Hogan does what a Sci-Fi writer (or any writer for that matter) is supposed to do -- he takes an idea and pushes it outside the envelope. With science fiction, he doesn't just rehash a fantasy about aliens that's merely based on old familiar plots set in the future, what he does is actually push beyond what we accept as current science and beliefs and creates a plausible world and race. His aliens are unique, as only they should be, because they evolved in a different environment from Earth. Hogans characters combined with his creativity and knowledge of the aerospace industry add up to a good yarn. I wish the editors and publishers of modern Sci-Fi books and magazines would take notice of good Sci-Fi writers like Hogan.
An epic, a future classic of our time, ode to space travel.......1998-05-10
I'm surprised it seems there are no reviews for this book yet. I read this book when it came out in 1983. I was electrified by Mr. Hogan's breathtaking ideas and sweeping concepts, from the origins of the human race to the possibilities of "what's out there..." No doubt I began some serious reading on these matters because of Mr. Hogan and how he inspired me -- I even did some music pieces thinking of some scenes of the book. Thanks you, Mr. Hogan. I think all young people, 15 to 25, should read this book in school sometime. After I read this, I read Inherit the Stars, and was totally amazed when Giants' Star came out. I think Hollywood got scared to do any of this material on film. It's far too large and overwhelming for that format. So read this book! This book is great fun and a great learning experience as well. The whole trilogy is one of the greatest works of this 20th Century that fades away. Lots of books will fade away, but the Trilogy will go on. Cheers to Mr. Hogan!

Book Description
From its beginnings in prehistoric religion to its central importance in Western faiths, the soul has been a constant source of fascination. In this intriguing book, the concept of the soul is thoroughly investigated. Exploring insights from neuroscience, psychopharmacology, and existential psychology, McGraw exhaustively researches the various takes on the human soul and considers it's meaning in our postmodern world.
Customer Reviews:
Where does God live?.......2007-09-13
I think John McGraw is mad at God, so mad that he decided that God does not exist. The author tried many different religions and found them all wanting. So did I when I was younger. But I decided God did not live in religions, not that God was dead. Actually, the author also decided God is not dead. How could what never existed outside of the human mind be dead?
To my way of thinking, it is still impossible to prove that God exists and it is impossible to prove that God does not exist. I do not even know if I exist outside my own mind. But the author takes aim at God with the intent of proving that which cannot be proven. And he does so in a delightful, informative, and methodical way.
He begins with our earliest human beliefs about God, and with stops at Aristotle, Jesus, and a few other men of religion, he ends at the latest research into the human brain. He concludes that altered states of being, especially ecstasy, are rooted in the chemistry of the brain, not in some outside force. And he says, if I understood him correctly, that ecstasy is at the root of all religion, even those that have made it a sin to be happy.
As an aside, as a longtime devotee of meditation, I found it interesting that he wrote that the altered states I seek in meditation could be found in hallucinogens, both natural and manmade. Perhaps he is right, but unfortunately, most hallucinogens are illegal, whereas meditation is not. Therefore, I will keep meditating. But more importantly, proving what happens in our minds when we have altered states simply does not disprove the existence of God. It only proves something is being altered in our minds.
Did John McGraw convince me that God does not exist? No, he did not.
But he nevertheless believes as I believe. Whether or not God exists, I am responsible for my life. I am responsible for my actions. I cannot act as though there will be another life in which to finally live my dreams because to do so insures I will not live this live fully. Nor, do I believe any of us can act as though God will ride down from the heavens on a celestial horse, and with angels galore, save us from our own insanity; for to do so will insure that our insanity continues.
I must be responsible for myself. I think John McGraw would agree.
Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."
Comprehensive look at the idea of the soul.......2007-08-16
This book takes a comprehensive look at the idea of the human soul. The author begins with a discussion of ancient religions and where the idea of the soul may have originated. This portion of the book was wonderfully eye opening. I had previously taken classes in ancient myth and vaguely remembered some of the information that is presented here. The author does a wonderful job of following the ancient myths through to current religious beliefs. The book then goes into long explanations about how certain portions of the human brain are really responsible for the emotions that for so long have been attributed to the "soul." Likewise the book goes into a comprehensive study of the brain on various drugs and how the idea of being one with one's body can be altered by certain hallucinogens. I did feel that too much time was spent on how each separate category of drug affects the brain. I didn't feel that that portion of the book really illuminated much except for the tie-in to ancient religious use of hallucinogens, and how the concept of a separate soul may have orginated with their use. I was much more impressed with the actual information on brain function and conciousness. While, I agree with the author with much of his thesis, the one omission was why we each have our own personal consiousness. While drugs and brain function can make us forget how to do even basic human functions and how drugs can make us feel like we are not in our body, it doesn't explain why we are expereincing consciousness personally. But I don't think that question will ever be answered.
Well, I liked it........2007-03-07
Initially the unusual cover caught my eye and a perusal of the chapters convinced me to purchase, as the "hard problem" of consciousness is an interesting subject to me.
I agree with some reviewers that the author did not address much of the neuroscience now being done that actually quite adequately demonstrates that the "self" or "soul" is indeed a fiction, like the Eastern Wisdom traditions have always maintained. And I think one third of the book being dedicated to mind-altering drugs and their effects was a bit much.
This book takes an overt intellectual approach to the question of the soul, i.e., it is not a touchy-feely book about how one must deal with the psychological problem of being mortal. There are plenty of books written in that vain. This author just addresses directly the question of a "soul" and concludes, convincingly, that there is no reason to consider it as ontologically primary or necessary- it's just a word that points to a process, a verb rather than a noun.
One major point for me - before reading this book I have never thought about the fact that christianity (the bible) teaches two paradoxical ideas regarding the "afterlife" - bodily resurrection vs. the immediate transfer of the "spirit" to heaven/hell upon bodily death. I have subsequently run this problem by both protestant and catholic intellectual types on various philosophy forums and it generally flummoxes them, i.e., their convoluted attempts at reconciliation amuses but does not explain.
In general I would say this book, especially sections one and three, was quite an interesting and edifying read - rather an uplifting experience for my mortal soul. The writing was clear and had style. I thank the author for his efforts and look forward to his future literary productions.
Reflecting On The Soul.......2007-02-21
When I discuss the topic of the soul (or the mind) with others, we inevitably arrive at the question, "What is this soul-thing anyway?" Most people respond, "I don't know. It's just something we have." McGraw's "Brain & Belief" is the answer to that question. It answers the question first on an historical level--how other cultures in the past regarded this non-physical entity that still permeates our current paradigm. McGraw traces the lineage of the soul throughout myriad religious lenses and then through the scientific lens as well, providing an extremely rich and broad overview.
In a day and age in which decisions on stem cell research are being made on the basis of when a human becomes "ensouled," McGraw's book proves very timely. This topic has been entrenched in the human experience since the Cro Magnons 30,000 years ago (read on). It plays an instrumental role in many of the "big issues" such as morality (who should get what rights?), science (what evidence for the soul is there?), and artificial intelligence (could computers have souls?) as well as a more interpersonal approach to simply being a more authentic person--being true to one's essence or "soul," be that real or metaphorical.
I highly recommend McGraw's book on both levels: as an academic and informative read as well as an adventure in self-reflection.
From soul exploration to self exploration.......2006-09-10
This book definitely helps with asking oneself the right questions, deepens understanding of emotional and physical aspects underlying our beliefs. It impresses with its thoughtfulness and scope, with author's interesting personal insights and sometimes unexpected, yet witty, sense of humor. Not to argue with the previous reviewer, but I think the cover selection is tasteful and appropriate. Great book overall
