Johann Wolff, a German scientist and émigré, resettles in a Midwestern university town after World War II, and within months he mysteriously disappears. A half century later, Ted Sandstrom, an experimental physicist, announces to a small audience of his fellow scientists that he has discovered a method for generating vast amounts of power with a small quantum energy device. The scientists include Nolan Kilkenny, a former Navy Seal who will transfer Ted's research into the industrialized sector, and Oksanna Zoschenko, a Ukranian physicist who understands that Sandstrom's work has vast implications for the global economy as well as the future of science. The connection between Sandstrom and Wolff is at the heart of this suspense thriller; Wolff's missing notebooks not only presage Sandstrom's research, but also hold the key to utilizing it to change the world.

Meanwhile, Victor Orlov, a powerful Russian industrialist, sends his own private army of killers to steal Sandstrom's work and turn it over to his own scientists to create a vast new industry that will destabilize the economic and geopolitical balance. Orlov's only obstacle is Kilkenny (from Spyder Web), who makes a welcome appearance in Quantum. He's a hero in the Tom Clancy tradition, a one-man army. The sometimes plodding story will appeal primarily to readers with enough scientific knowledge to understand the complicated physics of Wolff's and Sandstrom's work and a compelling interest in how new technology impacts the world economy. --Jane Adams

DEATH

THEY'RE ALL RELATIVE

In 1948, a young German emigre reached the threshold of an incredible scientific discovery: a blueprint for the construction of the universe that could surpass the theories of Einstein. But the scientist's secret past catches up to him with a vengeance, and he and his work are seemingly lost forever.

Now, buried knowledge has been rediscovered -- and whoever controls it holds the key to the future. Two sides, American and Russian, are in a ruthless fight for the ultimate fight for the power of the new millennium -- quantum technology -- and ex-Navy SEAL nolan Kilkenny finds himself caught in the crossfire. To stop the fate of the world from being hijacked, Kilkenny must wage a war across two hemispheres as he races to solve a decades-old mystery -- if the solution doesn't kill him first.

3 out of 5 stars A review of the book on tape.......2006-05-23

For once this was an abridgment to a book that was read on tape in which I didn't feel like something important was left out.

Unfortunately, the plot and the characters were only so-so. Jerry O'Connell read the story - and at first I thought that would be a big plus since I've liked most of the stuff that he has done. However, this time I was not impressed. Not his best work.

Nolan Kilkenny, who should be known as 'the one man army' based on his unstoppable one man performances against several teams of battle-tested, better-armed former Russian Special Forces throughout the book, is a tiresome character. Many of the supporting characters were much more interesting and I would have preferred it if some of them would have had a greater role throughout the book.

I give this one a grade of C+.

3 out of 5 stars Some characters not very believable.......2004-02-11

Quantum was a decent story from beginning to end. I had a bit a trouble keeping its pace when the story got bogged down in explaining complex mathematical and scientific concepts. A few of the characters were hard to believe. Nolan got shot twice and injured a half dozen other ways, yet never lost a fight, and never even felt pain from his injuries. He also was shooting a dozen people throughout the book, and never once was questioned about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kelsey somehow lived through two kidnappings, when her kidnapper killed pretty much anything that moved during the story. I think I could try another Tom Grace story, but I probably won't rush out to buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Complex characters elevate this above standard action fare.......2001-06-26

Shady Russian industrialists attempt to wrest control of an amazing new energy device from the American scientists who developed it. Tom Grace's story doesn't really add anything new to the techno-thriller genre, but it is nevertheless interesting due to some multi-faceted characterizations: even the featured good guys have some dark secrets and less than savory aspects to their personalities. Good pacing, nicely drawn secondary characters, and a story that doesn't overstay its welcome also help things along.

5 out of 5 stars Time Spent Enjoyably.......2001-06-04

Tom Grace's second book was even better than his first -- Sypder Web. While Sypder Web and Quantum were quick and enjoyable reads, Quantum is more polished.

Although Quantum's characters and technical explanations lack the depth and detail, respectively, of a Clancy novel, the trade off is that the reader can actually move towards the end of the book in reasonably short order.

Unlike many other books of the genre, Quantum is a book that can be left on the coffee table for the enjoyment of nearly anyone in the household because it is devoid of gratuatus sex -- in the same vein as the late Robert Ludlum -- and is less violent than any episode of Xena, Warrier Princess.

I strongly suspect that Tom's next book will continue to surpass our expecations.

3 out of 5 stars Here He Comes to Save the Day.......2001-04-27

RE: AUDIO TAPE VERSION. Scientist/businessman/Navy SEAL and all around good guy Nolan Kilkenny takes on the former Soviet Union's top evil industrialist, its most treacherous commandos, and the 21st century cyber world to prevent an earth-shaking discovery from falling into the wrong hands. It's a mismatch of course. A routine thriller, Quantum does feature a nice twist revelation about the long-dead superphysicist whose work prompts much of the mayhem. You don't need to be scientifically-inclined to follow the story but it helps if you enjoy graphic ninja violence. 3 stars and no more - as in don't buy a ticket, but still rent the video.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A734113. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis explores issues associated with defining and selecting infrastructure requirements for World Wide Web sites. The explosive growth the WWW has made it the largest single service on the Internet. With this growth comes a need for guidance to organizations or individuals desiring to establish new Web sites. This thesis provides the guidance needed to define a potential site's requirements and select the infrastructure necessary to fulfill those requirements. A combination of literature review of current books and periodicals, as well as surveys of WWW sites was used to obtain information. This information was used to develop the framework for defining requirements. A rule based heuristic was also adopted from the literature and subsequently validated. It is used to select the computing hardware needed for a site. A key lesson learned is that most organizations do not conduct any initial requirements analysis to determine a site's infrastructure needs. The reasons range from oversight to indifference. The potential penalty for not conducting proper assessment of requirements is the same as for any venture, a substandard product and poorly leveraged investment.

Dennis L. McKiernan's long-awaited second short story collection set in the bestselling world of Mithgar...In a smoky tavern in Port Arbalin, travelers from across the realm share stories both true and fantastic-tales of thieves and demons, warriors and monsters, magic and myth-conjured from the mind of one of the modern masters of fantasy.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More great tales.......2005-11-22

Red Slippers is a collection of Mithgar tales as told by a group of travellers at the Red Slipper inn. The tales relate to events and characters in other Mithgar books, but the stories stand on their own. You don't have to have read the other Mithgar books to follow this one, but much of the charm comes from the beloved characters and exciting situations of the other books. The material and reading level (as with all of McKiernan's books) is appropriate for ages 12 or so to adult, with something for everyone.

I have been in love with McKiernan's fantasy Mithgar world for nearly 20 years now. I am saddened that he is putting an end to the series, but Red Slippers ties it up into a nice bundle. McKiernan's other works are equally good; even his retellings of classics are fresh.

3 out of 5 stars More "Tales," good and bad.......2004-06-21

Any long-running series is going to have a lot of loose ends by the time it finishes. And Dennis McKiernan's "Red Slippers: More Tales of Mithgar" deals with a handful of the loose ends from his now-finished fantasy series. They're a mixed bag, but McKiernan's faux-Tolkien writing is somehow more palatable in short stories.

Aravan and his crew from the Elvenship arrive at the "Red Slipper," a bordello/inn, for some R&R. They eventually start swapping stories: The story of Durek the Dwarf and how he almost drowned. The story of two Elves and a human who went hunting a giant leech. A legend and a real story clash in the tale of Gelvin, a petty thief whose stolen jewel destroys him. The evil mage Modru takes a horrible revenge on the swordsmith Dwynfor.

And when Urus, Riatha, Bair and Bair's girlfriend Jaith all arrive, there are some extra stories: How they went to the world of the Fey folk, and discovered what happened to drive them to Mithgar -- not to mention a comic tale about how they destroyed a cursed throne. And the Warrows share a particular tale about how the spirit of a dead High King ordered three Warrows to repay a debt handed down through the generations.

As proven in "Tales of Mithgar," Dennis McKiernan is a lot better at writing short stories than novels. Newbies to this series will be hopelessly lost, but fans will probably be glad to see their old favorites again. His writing still pulls heavily from half the writings of Tolkien, but fortunately his generic Elves, halflings, dwarves and evil beasties are kept strictly on leashes.

McKiernan does a passable job of filling in the gaps, although one long-running mystery is brought up, then left unsolved. The story about Gelvin is so choppy that it's almost unreadable, and "Groaning Stones" is just flip-forward boring. However, in many of the other stories -- with comedy, action, and a bit of tragedy -- he manages a few solid thrills and chills.

His language is still painfully ye olde and sometimes incredibly clunky, with lines like "He makes my very essence cower." There's also an unfortunate tendency to make the characters either bicker over minutiae, or laugh like lunatics. By cut-and-pasting chunks of his earlier novels, he makes some of the stories seem unevenly written. Not to mention that, again, he tends to be very repetitive -- especially when describing sexy dancing by Riatha and Jaith.

Those who have read the Mithgar series will probably gobble down McKiernan's latest, especially since it ties up most of the loose ends. These "Red Slippers" are deeply flawed, but passable.

5 out of 5 stars Questions Resolved and Raised.......2004-06-13

Red Slippers is the fifteenth volume in the Mithgar series. Although it is a collection of twelve tales, most contain more than one yarn shared among the crew and friends of the elvenship Eroean as they sit before the hearth in the common room of the Red Slipper. Little action other than drinking, laughing and fighting occur in these tales, but the yarns themselves tell of death, destruction and defeat as well as courage, determination and triumph.

Seventeen millennia afore, the First Era began with the crowning of Awain as the High King of Mithgar, the realm formed by the merger of Pellar, Jugo, Hoven, Valon, both Riamonds, and Garia. Much has happened in the intervening years, some known to all, some known only to a few, and much known only to the gods. These tales reveal something of those little known occurrences, yet raise other questions which hopefully will be answered in future works.

In this collection, the Eroean sails in Port Arbalin after a long and dangerous voyage to the long-dead Lost City of Jade. Since some of the crew were lost during the adventure, the remainder will have a long layover while replacements for the slain Drimma are recruited. Thus many of the crew are staying at the Red Slipper rather than onboard.

After toasting absent friends, the crew start telling tales. First is the myth of Gelvin's Doom as told by Noddy, but Aravan can't help thinking of the real events as found in Gelvin's diary and the evidence of his corpse. Then Aravan tells of events which happened at a well in the desert, involving a giant black worm-like bloodsucking creature. Afterwards they talk about tokens of great power and a confrontation between Modru and the Elven smith Dwynfor.

As these yarns are told, Pipper and Bington and Aylissa and Wooly and the others interrupt with questions and comments and sometimes the conversation goes off on a tangent with another story before returning to the original yarn. Vex the fox wanders out and comes back with a great fat brown wharf rat as a present for Fat Jim. Some crewmembers drink too much Vornholt ale, fall flat on their faces, are carried off to bed, and have a terrible hangover the next morning. After a while, four more friends -- Urus, Ritha, Bair, and Jaith -- sail into port on their way back to report on their mission to destroy the Black Throne of Hadron's Hall and they add a few yarns of their own.

In case you didn't notice, this work is set in a bordello and has all the rowdy, lusty ambiance one would expect. However, do not expect tidy little packets of fiction with clear-cut beginnings and endings, for these stories actually intertwine among themselves as well as with all that has gone before. Imagine yourself before a fire in the company of boisterous friends and with a tankard in your hand, ready to discuss the entire history of the world with some of those who helped make it!

Highly recommended for McKiernan fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales in the Tolkien tradition.

            -Arthur W. Jordin

5 out of 5 stars twelve terrific tales.......2004-05-10

In Port Arbalin, known as the major trading town on the Avagon Sea, is a lesser recognized brothel the Red Slipper frequented by the eleven members of the ship Eroean when not at sea. Here the eleven, dwarves and other adventurers meet for R&R sharing daring do from their past.

The twelve terrific tales that tie together as the Return to Mithgar share in common keen intricate philosophical undertones that lead the reader to ponder the meaning of civilization and a host of negative isms that detract from society. The tales employ different techniques to get the cerebral message across to the reader. Some use trauma and tragedy while others employ humor and satire. Though the heroic and the malevolent may seem stereotypical fantasy musings, Dennis L. McKiernan furbishes a powerful anthology that will leave a grateful audience wanting to share more pints with the crew of the Eroean.

"Tales of Mithgar" is back in print, and is rereleased as a companion piece to "Red Slippers: More Tales of Mithgar." I wrote the original "Tales" way back when ... and the main reason for doing so was so that I could explore more of the nature of Warrows in their natural surroundings of the Boskydells. I will naturally give this collection of stories a five star rating. :) I do hope you enjoy them. But the main reason for posting this review is to let you know that "Tales of Mithgar" is back in print. Best regards, Dennis L. McKiernan HTTP://www.mithgar.com

4 out of 5 stars Tales of Mithgar.......2003-12-05

It's strange that this is out of print, but anyways. I first read these short stories when I was a teenager and I could picture everything that was being described and could connect to the characters, thanks to McKiernan's writing skills (though a bit heavy-handed at times now that I've read them again recently). There's times when McKiernan gets a bit sappy but overall his writing is tight and endearing. The characters act logically and have personality. The blizzard setting was a good touch as well and the switching between tales and the present was done rather smoothly. Definitely worth checking out for those who haven't read them, a great collection of stories. I wouldn't pay $50 for it though (the current asking price if you want it used on Amazon.com)...

4 out of 5 stars Tales From The One-Eyed Crow.......2003-01-23

"Tales of Mithgar," though the first collection of short stories in McKiernan's Mithgarian sagas, is an essential to the collection for any fan of this series. Though many readers may pass up this book of "small" tales in favor of one of the epic novels - I highly advise you give it a second glance.

The long awaited first three encounters of Baron Stoke by Tomlin, Petal, Riatha, and Urus are included in the collection; so if you're a fan of his masterpiece "The Eye of the Hunter" - perhaps McKiernan's most definative creative piece - then this prequel to that adventure is a must.

            3 out of 5 stars Hmm..........2002-02-13

I disliked McKiernan's "Silver Call" duology and Iron Tower trilogy. But I was pleasantly surprised by this collection of short stories -- they tended to be tighter, better-written and often funny or cute. And even if I didn't dislike them, they didn't annoy me as much. (Methinks McKiernan's talents are better suited to small, personal stories rather than epic sagas)

This series of stories opens in the One Eyed Crow, a Warrow pub, during a really horrible blizzard. As a result, the people in it end up telling stories to each other to pass the time and occupy their minds. Among the first is "The Thornwalker and the Wolf", a nice little story about a Warrow who ends up in a wolf den during a snowstorm. "Trout of the Rillmix" is touching, but telling any more would ruin it. "Ruffian and the Giant" is amusing in places, but overall feels kind of strained and hard to follow. "Agron's Army" has three things going for it -- tight plotting, an intriguing conclusion, and some passages from the POV of one of Modru's Hloks. "The Helborne Drum" was something I didn't understand at all. "The Transformation of Beau Darby" was very, very cute, especially for the people who liked the "Hel's Crucible" duology. "The Dammsel" is sad and sweet. "For Want Of A Copper Coin" is also cute, a nice little story about a Warrow competing with a Man.

What's the problem? Well, interspersed through these stories are three interconnected tales that lead up to "Eye of the Hunter." (I haven't read it, but I know what it's about) This follows an Elf lady (I refuse to use the term "Elfess") named Riatha, a shapeshifting Baeran named Urus, and a pair of Warrows named Tomlin and Petal as they hunt the horrifying Baron Stoke, a psychotic sorcerer who has killed loved ones of each one of them.

Despite the unfortunately tendency of Mr. McKiernan to give us dull travelling details, I enjoyed these stories until I started recognizing details from them. If you've read tales about J.R.R. Tolkien's Huan, Luthien and their showdown with Sauron (who also appears as a werewolf, then in bat form, was keeping a love interest captive), you'll see some striking similarities to events in those three stories. That sort of spoiled them for me. And I felt the epilogue was a little too much.

The writing varies from story to story. Some are nearly impeccable, some are pretty awful; the heavy-handed message of "Thornwalker" was a little much. He does get points for finally giving us a Warrow romance that I can stomach, I actually thought Petal and Tomlin were kinda cute. Fans of this book series will also like seeing their old favorites -- some are lead characters from the novel-length books, some are background characters, like Gaffer Tom.

Like most short-story collections, this varies from story to story. A nice read if you want some variety or if you're a fan of the series. But I really do think that McKiernan needs to write shorter, smaller-scale, more interpersonal books. If he had the literary success of some of the the stories in here, I'd read it all.

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Stories.......2000-05-26

I liked this book the best stories were the one that is about Baron Stoke and the one where the older man and the young boy had to gurad that outpost that story was very touching and it really opens your eyes to the horrors of war. There is also a suprisingly good story about life and fishing and a king sized trout,I am an avid fisherman so I quite enjoyed that story. If you are a McKiernan fan I reccommend this book.

You may already be familiar with the saga of The Uncanny X-Men -- but this is the tale of Wilmar Shiras' Children Of The Atom, first published in 1953 by pioneering SF publisher Gnome Press.

            4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-31

Radiation damage to parents have left certain children with enhanced abilities. After a scientist learns of the existence of such children by tracking down one of the older boys, he decides a school would be a good idea, and brings them together.

Eventually they realise psychology will be a big issue, after some practical jokes start escalating, and work on that as a project. A local preacher of the crazed loon variety starts preaching against them as abominations and witches, etc., so they decide to disperse back into the normal population, for their own good, and to influence others, at least for a significant percentage of the time.

4 out of 5 stars A good read for anyone, but great for bright young readers.......2005-11-20

This is a facsimile reprint edition of the Shiras' 1953 fix-up novel of really exceptional children-the brilliant mutant offspring of parents caught in a nuclear industrial accident.

Peter Welles, a school psychiatrist, is asked by a teacher to talk to Timothy Paul, an apparently perfectly normal thirteen-year-old who nevertheless seems to her teacher's instinct different in some hard to pin down way. Welles gradually ferrets out the truth-that Timothy is an astoundingly bright child who has been taught, unknowingly but effectively, by his loving grandparents to pass for normal. As he discovers the extent of Timothy's exceptionalism-he's been writing and publishing under multiple false names, saving the money in a bank account opened by mail, and carrying on extensive correspondence with adults who never suspect his true age-Welles realizes that Timothy can't be the only one. Worried about this brilliant boy's long-term prospects without any intellectual equals to relate to when he's an adult, Welles helps him seek other orphans of the same accident, and slowly gathers them together in a school for what are accurately, if somewhat understatedly, called "gifted children." Their troubles aren't over, of course; in some ways, they're just beginning. Shiras manages to be both realistic and optimistic in describing the children's attempts to both develop their potential and adapt to society, and this is a good and still satisfying book.

            Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for a child who doesn't quite fit in.......1999-07-29

While the science is sometimes outdated, the themes of this book (alienation from other children because of a higher intelligence, interconnections with others are more important than genius) ring true and are universal. Much more uplifting than Odd John by Olaf Stapledon. However, it was difficult to find; I searched for 4 years for my copy.

4 out of 5 stars Great if you are smart kid and yet feel you must "fit in"..........1997-10-13

I read this book when I was in 6th-8th grade-- which must have been around 1955. I lost my copy somewhere along the way but have always remembered the story and the title.

It is hard to explain the way the story takes hold of you and pulls you into the world which is that of the "children of the atom". The resonance and relating is very strong if you are a child who, for whatever reason, has concluded that the intelluctual dimension is the valid one for you and if, around you, that direction is held in disdain.

I am afraid I can not tell you how it ends (because I have forgotten) but I remember it was my favorite book for a very long time...so, for me, at least, it must have been quite satisfactory...

4 out of 5 stars I have read this book every year since 1950, wonderful book.......1996-11-07

I was 10 years old in 1950 when I first read this book. The author was my neighbor in Oakland, CA and she shared her chapters with me as she wrote them. A wonderful pre-teen, teen Science Fiction book that was current in its time and for today. The author takes us on an adventure of genius children who are the result of the first nuclear power plant accident. Her sharing with us the difficulties that gifted children have convincing adults of their special abilities allows us to enter a world not often thought about. Children who hide their talents from unbelievers or those who would take advantage of them. My children loved this story and have grown to adulthood carrying its memory with them. I have looked for other works by this author but have been unable to find them. If you have children who like to dream of expanding their abilities don't miss this book as timely today as it was in 1950.

I hated this book. I'm giving it three stars because it might be me hating self-help stuff, but this was not really what i expected. It's a feel good book and doesn't really give you specific tips or anything really weight watchers related. waste of money in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Informative.......2006-11-05

This is a great book for anyone, weight watchers or not. It teaches you the REAL truth about dieting myths.

5 out of 5 stars Very good weightloss book.......2006-09-03

The price is right and the information is very eye-opening.
I have read most of the book and it made me feel that weight loss was possible.
It was easy reading and I liked how they had it structured with the different myths of lossing weight. This is probably a re-reader to keep you focused on what is important!!!
I highly recommend this book to anyone that has weight to loose whether it is a lot of weight or just a little bit of weight.
I'm now lost almost 40lbs since mid-February. I am a real reader and believer in this book. I still have a ways to go, but will keep pulling this book out and others to keep motivated and ontrack.
You'll want to get other books to supplement this book. And keep you on track.
Best wishes on improving your life!!!! And health!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Everything You Already Knew But Didn't Want to be Told.......2006-08-30

You can forget the herbs, supplements, enzymes, and stress and fat blockers. The few prescription diet pills that work have side effects worse than the cure. If there is anything easy about weight control why do we have record obesity and more and more gastric bypass surgery? The low fat and low carb diets are just gimmicks akin to the grapefruit, boiled egg, cabbage soup and drinking man's diets. These diets may work short term, but they're not substainable. How many grapefruit can you eat and for how long? Bottom line, it's all about calories in - calories out, regardlesss of what you consume to get the calories. Losing requires a calorie deficit, more calories out than in. EXERCISE! An OK book, but really a 200+ page solicitation to join Weight Watchers.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand help for weight loss.......2006-11-11

This book is an inspiration for me. The author(s) explain the underlying causes of weight gain, including the psychological ones. They also offer easy-to-understand, practical advice on how to lose weight -- including less obvious ideas such as creating a support system for yourself, and letting others know that you're trying to lose weight, so that they won't be pressuring you to eat more. I love the myth-exploding they do in every chapter -- and honestly acknowledging that there is a kernel of truth to these myths.

4 out of 5 stars Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get going..........2006-02-27

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get going loosing weight is the prevailing message of this quick moving, easy to read book. It is NOT a diet guide. Instead, it provides medical information and inspirational stories that let you know you're not out there fighting with your weight alone.

The goal of the book is to take 10 diet myths, or 10 things that people tell themselves about dieting, and gently peel away the fallacies to reveal the truth. It refreshing, comforting, and motivational.

The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 was it is not a Weight Watchers guide. It leaves you at the end with just the loosest information of what Weight Watchers is, and doesn't tell you how to get started, just to join.

Well, it worked on me. I'm waiting for my In Home kit, but this book isn't a sales tool, it's just a nice guide to get you started on whatever path you decide to take.

Recommended for those who are trying to loose weight, or those who have already lost and are looking for motivation on staying healthy.
