1 out of 5 stars Blueprint for the future? More like a model made of Legos..........2007-02-21

After hearing and reading a number of astonishing things about this book, I had to give it a read. What I found was not exactly what I expected. While some sources have described the Dru character as a "sinister dictator", the truth is not quite so interesting. The book itself is nowhere near as interesting.

Upon opening the book to the table of contents, one can't help but take notice of the number of chapters in this book. There are 53 chapters in just 173 pages! For those of you who don't have a math minor, that's a little over 3 pages per chapter. And for some reason, many of the chapters are explicit continuations of the chapter before. What was the point of this? Why not keep the two chapters a single chapter?
Needless to say, the writing here is atrocious. The plot is paper-thin, the characters don't develop one iota, and a romance sub-plot rears its ugly head on the last two pages of the book! How was this book published? Why was it put into print? Therein lies the intrigue.

While it was anonymously written at the time, it is today well-known that the author of this book was Colonel Edward Mandell House (he gives a little hint in the text when two characters meet at Mandell House [yeesh!]), who was the virtual co-president of the United States with Woodrow Wilson. Wilson admitted time and again that House was his "alter ego", even to the point that House was given accomodations in the White House. Why is all this important?

Philip Dru leads a revolution against the United States government. Not a bad thing in and of itself, if the reasons had been more compelling. What happens in the aftermath, however, brings shudders to students of history. Philip Dru becomes dictator of the United States, without too much reservation. He tosses out the national constitution, as well as the state constitutions, and has them rewritten. He institutes a graduated income tax (which did not exist at that time in the U.S. because it was ruled unconstitutional; however, with the "ratification" of the 16th amendment just a year or two after the publication of this book, we got one for the first time and have lived under it ever since), forces popular election of senators, nationalizes industry, and reorganizes the entire government at his whim. And Dru is definitely portrayed as the friendly protagonist. If the First Lady were to write a book calling for revolution, abolition of the constitution, and a unitary dictator, would we worry? I sure hope so.

But more worrisome is the fact that all of these thing eventually did come to pass in this country. (Sure, the constitution wasn't abolished and rewritten. However, the New Deal Supremee Court made rulings that effectively gave Congress carte-blanche to pass ANY law it felt like, even those that explicitly violate the constitution [see USA PATRIOT Act]). Was House prescient? Did he simply see the tides of popular opinion swarming over the masses? Or was he simply one of the many manipulating the domestic policy of our republic behind the scenes?

The structure and execution of this book are amateurish at best, more likened to the writing of a 10th grader than any kind of real author. Perhaps that is the point. This book was clearly aimed at the unwashed masses. Every piece of dialog in this book espouses the benefits of socialism and evil of capitalism. But this effort is so transparent that it leaves us with nothing of any literary merit, and in its place only political ramblings of a clear Fabian socialist. These ramblings, of course, entail bringing up relevant issues and injustices (female suffrage, corporate exploitation) and packaging them with solutions that involve only the addition and centralization of power in the federal government. While those who educate themselves will see this work for what it is, the many people who read this book (not today, since people don't read, but back then there were probably more than a few) would end up buying into bad solutions for exaggerated problems.

There is absolutely no reason to buy this book. The price simply doesn't justify it. A reader will gain no enjoyment from it. This book only redeems itself in its historical context: it was written by a man who pushed Woodrow Wilson to sign the Federal Reserve Act, which destroyed our economy and continues to devalue our money to this day; to lead us into World War I, despite his campaign promises not to (the Lusitania was carrying English munitions and was a valid military target); and to attempt to sacrifice the sovereignty of our nation to a world governing body in the League of Nations, which our Congress rightly rejected.

This wasn't a novel. It was a blueprint. And might as well be considered a history book now.

2 out of 5 stars Useful Historical Tool.......2007-01-19

This book doesn't exactly have an original premise; a West Point graduate named Philip Dru fights for the rights of the oppressed by overthrowing the American government and implementing a benevolent dictatorship (forgive the oxymoron) so as to correct the problems of society. Such a book, while shocking at first glance, is so common that rarely would I consider it worth reading. This one, however, comes with an interesting catch... it was written by none other than Edward House.
The name might not ring a bell for most people, but Colonel Edward M. House was Woodrow Wilson's closest advisor during the first six years of his presidency, and as such this book yields amazing insights into the philosophical and personal character of a man who was one of the most powerful in the nation (and, for a brief period of time, in the world). For that alone it deserves to be read. It suffers, however, from House's own shortcomings as a writer. The prose is pedestrian, the dialogue cliched and trite, the narrative development utterly predictable (and often unrealistic), and the explanations and analysis given to major problems of the day simplistic and absurd. Indeed, it is amazing that a man of Wilson's great intellect and brilliant insights would have ever associated with, much less trusted, someone who could write something so poor. The fact that Wilson was one of our greatest presidents is a wonder, given the content of this book; aside from its historical significance, it has no redeeming value.

It turns out that this book has mysteriously disappeared over the years. From [1] p. 343 (in september 1955) :

"Meanwhile, another voice was heard among the half-dozen people in the Unites States who were asking freedom for Ezra Pound. This was Westbrook Pegler. who had long been interested in the Pound case, but had done nothing about it. He was moved to write a few columns in his defense by an odd chain of events. Pegler was trying to find a novel by Colonel Edward M. House, called "Philip Dru: Administrator" (New York, B. W. Huebsch, 1912), a strange work that outlined the entire New Deal program two decades before Roosevelt came to power. All copies of the book mysteriously had disappeared, but Pegler remembered that George Sylvester Viereck had ghostwritten a series of articles for Colonel House, which appeared in "Liberty" Magazine. Viereck had a copy of the book, which he lent to Pegler."

3 out of 5 stars Important but poorly written.......2000-05-30

_Philip Dru_ is an extremely obscure political tract written in 1911 by "Colonel" Edward Mandell House, a key advisor to Woodrow Wilson and FDR. This is what makes the book so shocking. The book advocates the violent overthrow of the constitutional government and proposes a communist/socialist system as its replacement. Considering that the man who wrote this book had such a close position to the president, it's no surprise that some of the ideas in this book eventually became public policy.

Philip Dru, the main character, is a West Point graduate who eventually resigns his post and becomes involved in social problems. Dru is chosen to lead an army against the U.S. government led by a puppet president. When Dru gains control he throws the Constitution out the window and nationalizes industries such as the telegraph (remember, it's 1911) and makes corporations subservient to government. He promises a job to every American, and rewrites the state constitutions. Watch for the part where Senator Selwyn talks about how he used direct marketing, etc., to get his man elected as president. Most of what he used is standard operating procedure today. In this book, the people revolt over what he does!

I give the book a low rating because the style is absolutely atrocious. Forget about any kind of character development. It is a poor attempt to wrap up a political treatise to make it palatable to the average joe. If you can get around the cruddy style, there is some gold to be found. This edition is a reprint by the John Birch Society. Give it a shot!

Harvest Tales & Midnight Revels is both a guide to giving storytelling parties at Halloween, and an anthology of original tales. Editor Michael Mayhew begins by describing how much he used to enjoy Halloween as a kid, especially for its affirmation in the face of death: "You may get me someday, but tonight I am alive!" As an adult, he missed the "magical shivers" of those eerie nights. So he started an annual gathering in which people would feast and tell stories.

The large middle part of the book is an anthology of the best read-aloud pieces that were shared with others at those parties: 16 stories and 3 poems. The only rule they had was that the story had to relate to Halloween in some way. So it's a mixed bag of creepy, quiet, corny, tacky, gory, and just plain silly tales--with such topics as late-night meetings with strangers, adventures in an urban underground, a pagan woman (i.e., witch) of the old times, and even "the gunk in the bottom of the refrigerator." None is longer than 2,500 words--a length that when read aloud comes to about 15 minutes.

The final section is a primer on how to give your own storytelling party, with suggestions for the number of guests, how to solicit stories, and how to plan the evening. Some of the ideas are awkwardly overstated for an adult book--surely everyone knows how to throw a potluck--but most of them, including suggested decor and music, seem well-founded.

"If I could share only one thing about what we did and learned over ten years of story parties," writes Mayhew, "it would be this: the Halloween that shrieked with glee when you were eight is still out there, only now it murmurs to itself in the dead of night..." --Fiona Webster

                    Book Description

Harvest Tales and Midnight Revels is the surprising and thoroughly entertaining result of a ten-year odyssey of creative play. The 19 stories and poems presented here, along with beautiful original illustrations, were collected over the course of a Halloween story-writing party, thrown by a special community of creative adults, that spanned ten consecutive years. Each is a unique gem of a tale originally read aloud at the party and included in this volume for its readability and tested appeal. Some horrific, some laugh-out-loud funny, some deeply disturbing and grotesque, and others quietly wistful, together they sound an oddly harmonious chorus in response to the initial and ongoing question: What is Halloween?

As an incentive to raise readers' deep creative impulses to action, the Afterword contains suggestions and ideas for starting your own literary Halloween tradition: what we learned by throwing these parties and how you can tap into the waiting creative energies of your community of friends.

5 out of 5 stars The Spirit of Halloween Oozes from These Pages.......2004-07-08

A demon who will grant your heart's desire in return for a taste of your blood. A legendary trick-or-treater who returns from the grave to help a youngster collect candy. A god of the urban highway who demands human sacrifices. All this and other haunting stories await you in HARVEST TALES AND MIDNIGHT REVELS: STORIES FOR THE WANING OF THE YEAR. These delightfully spine-tingling tales run the gamut of horror and Halloween themes. Some are outrageously humorous, some melancholy, and some frightening, but all of them are designed to bring back the spirit of All Hallows Eve for adults who long to celebrate the holiday as they did in their youth.

This book came about as the result of yearly Halloween parties hosted by the editor and his best friend, parties for which invited guests were requested to bring a holiday-related story they'd written and read it aloud. Many of the guests were (or are still) in some way professionally connected with the literary world, the fine arts, filmmaking, or television, and their talents shine through in these wonderfully crafted tales.

HARVEST TALES AND MIDNIGHT REVELS is one of the best anthologies of Halloween stories to come along in years. Even celebrated sci-fi and fantasy author Piers Anthony calls it "an impressive and original book, with an intriguing history of its own." And famed genre author and scriptwriter Larry Niven says "[these] stories are really good!"

Any lover of Halloween or horror literature who enjoys getting a good set of goose bumps will want to add this book to their library. With HARVEST TALES AND MIDNIGHT REVELS handy, any day of the year can feel like Halloween!

I detested this book. There is nothing of Harvest Tales nor Midnight Revels in it, only one nihilistic depressing story after another. There are four poems that were ok and two stories that were ok, the rest was just road kill. The stories are utterly disconnected from the title of the book. I really really do not ever want to go to a party where such tales are read. Bletch.

I was really excited when I ordered this book from Amazon.com. I try to read a Halloween themed book every October to put me in the Halloween spirit; this book fell short of my expectations though. There are a handful of good stories, about 5 of them, that made me feel my money wasn't totally wasted. But the rest are sub par stories written by non-professional writers. There was really something lacking. It was a stretch at best for some of these stories to even be in the book, because they didn't deal with Halloween, only loosely hinting at it. The idea behind the book was pretty cool; a compilation of stories originally read aloud on Halloween Night at a series of Halloween parties over a ten-year period. All I can say is that if these were the best stories from the parties, I am glad I wasn't invited! .

This brilliant, lovingly compiled collection of horror stories is only half the charm of this very original book - the genesis of the collection is almost as entertaining as the fiction: A Halloween "story party" where professional and non-professional adult writers come together to feast and read their short stories to friends and neighbors - cool! If you're looking to make Halloween fun for adult friends and family, this book may be just what the Mad Doctor ordered. Home spun horror as delicious as my demented aunt Denise's spice cake! I have to agree with Juan Depaz. I have done some amateur historical research on the period (I published a study of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera which received good reviews in Spain) and the vision that Yarbro has of the Civil War and what led to it is plain ridiculous. Somehow she wanted the atmosphere so that she could hang her tale, never mind how it meshed with reality.

(That reminds me that, never mind how much I enjoyed The Palace, Savonarola never conducted an auto-da-fe).

I am also irritated by the frequency in which priests, monks, and other members of the Church tend to be ignorant and despicable villains. Yarbro should get off her anti-Christian kick.

1 out of 5 stars Midnight Harvest fails.......2006-02-03

Chelsea Quinn Yarbro has spent two decades giving us windows to distant times and forgotten lands through the eyes of the vampires Saint-Germain and Olivia and often done an extraordinary job. This is not the case. Reading Midnight Harvest one wonders if she even bothered to make research this time. Saint-Germain has to flee Spain to escape the Fascists. As if they would have bothered a rich, Catholic nobleman. Yarbro seems to fall pray to the easy conceit many fall pray to and believe the Fascists were bad and the Republicans were good. She goes on and on about the "Generals" stealing business and killing the owners. Not one word about radical Communists and Anarquist doing it ten times worse. Saint-Germain's struggle with the White Legion in California and a Fascist assassin is a study in boredom.
My greatest problem with the book is that it makes me doubt the accuracy of Yarbro's research for other books. Dark of the Sun was astonishing(in a good way). But if all her research is so inaccurate...

4 out of 5 stars Twenty first in the Saint Germain series........2005-02-01

Or sixteenth, if one doesn't count the two offshoot series, one centering around Atta Olivia Clemens and one around Madeline de Montalia, both vampires who came to the undead life by way of Saint Germain.

Like all of the books in this series, this is a historical novel, set during a period in the unlife of Ferenc Ragosky, Count Saint Germain, a vampire who has lived since approximately 2000 years BCE. Unlike most of the others, however, this one is set fairly recently, in the period between World Wars I and II, and uniquely to this point (discounting a couple of the short stories in "The Chronicles of Saint Germain") is set in the United States of America.

Like all of the books in this series, it is a fascinating look at a fascinating character; Saint Germain is always a delight, although to some fans of more standard vampire fiction, he's too much of an unmitigated hero; there isn't enough of the dark, brooding antihero to him for some tastes. There may be some fans of the seiries, too, who prefer the more distant historical settings, and who find the twentieth century too current for their tastes in historical fiction.

Unless either of these quibbles sounds like something that would resonate with you, however, this book is highly recommended. Both the character and the history are very well-handled, and in addition, we see a character from a previous book; the love interest, Rowena Saxon, is a carryover from "Writ In Blood", which was set in the period immediately before the first world war.

2 out of 5 stars Yawn from beginning to end.......2003-12-16

I really don't know why I keep doing this to myself. I suppose it's out of loyalty to Saint-Germain. But I must say my hopes for a truly engaging SG book have pretty much been extinquished. There was a time when Yarbro could write...what happened?

I'll overlook the fact that the book opens with an entirely gratuitous and graphic sex scene (can I just say I really don't need a blow by blow description of where the count is sticking his tongue...some things are better left to imagination). But let's move beyond that.

The whole plot of the book was weak. SG leaves Spain on the eve of civil war only to be followed by an assasin of the new regime. Sounds exciting? HA! This is a study in how to make nothing happen throughout an entire book. Things that should have been suspenseful were flattened by endless repetative dialog and an entire lack of action. He must get his lover out of Spain...blah blah blah, lover leaves Spain without incident. He must get out of Spain...blah blah blah, he drives out of Spain without incident. Once he's in America things really pick up. I particularly liked the entire chapter devoted to buying a car. Wheeee! Eleven pages conversations with a saleman...the test drive was really exciting.

It was nice to see Rowena Saxon again (more muff diving). However, the "problems" SG faces with the vinyards he has invested in seem entirely contrived...and again, the action is buried in the repetitive dialog. Let's Beat This Point to Death should have been the title of this book. When action finally does manage to shoulder its way to the fore, Yarbro gets it over with as quickly as possible and gets back to being tedious. SG gets severely injured, turn the page, bing, all better...back to endless yapping.

Die hard fans will still read this just to get their SG fix (look at me). I probably can't talk them out of it. If you've never been introduced to Saint-Germain, for the love of all the forgotten gods, don't start with this one.

                    4 out of 5 stars Saint-Germain Comes to US.......2003-11-24

Midnight Harvest, while not as much of an edge-of-seat read as might be a few of the previous books, manages to introduce new connections, resolutions and laying bare of some previously met plots, settings, mysteries and people. Running for his life, as usual, Saint-Germain leaves eve-of-Civil War Spain and makes his way across to America and on to San Francisco. Reuniting with a previous lover, he must survive the attentions of a murderous assassin and help the people he loves and those he cares about survive the attentions of 20th century American villains. While there is not the "cast of thousands" violence seen in some of the earlier adventures, a healthy dose of suspense mixed with Ms. Yarbro's usual extremely competent period scholarship make for a very satisfying read. Saint-Germain is the oldest and, I think, so very romantic of the six vampiric "heroes" in either current TV or books available to us today. This latest book makes for a good addition to any collection of Saint-Germain's adventures, or the beginning of one. After all, you can't beat a bit of sex, violence and learnin' for curl up and enjoyable pleasure.

You are alone in your cabin, about to eat the dinner you've just cooked. You take a bite—but the meal is cold. You return it to the oven, but that's cold, too. You check the clock, and then, in panic, telephone the operator. The answer is the same: somehow, two days have disappeared, and you have no idea where they went. Your only clue: on your leg, a new, blood-red scar. Midnight Harvest follows three individuals as they come to grips with their participation in the worldwide abduction phenomenon: A CIA analyst who'd rather be indoors, a young South American boy who believes he's met the Virgin Mary, and the suicidal son of a Texas rancher. Although their stories seem like science fiction, Midnight Harvest is based on true experiences and the latest research into the terrifying experiences shared by tens of thousands of Americans—and untold millions worldwide.

This is a facinateing read. I could not put it down. There are some wonderful details about places and people that give you the sense of being there. The plot just keeps on unfolding until the very end and keeps you wondering if certain things are going to happen or not. Will the main characters find what they are looking for? Will the truth be revealed about visitors for far off places? The author has a way of putting things and people together that keeps you interested enough and wanting to know, is any part of this true? I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I'd love to see this one made into a movie.

So when Garak, the only Cardassian on Deep Space Nine TM, suggests a trip to the unknown depths of Level 45, they're ready to go. When they arrive on the musty, abandoned deck, they find a funny Cardassian toy that says "Moop" when activated. And then they discover the replicator button on the toy. Perfect! They can replicate enough "Moops" for a baseball game. But suddenly the figures that stand before them are as tall as Nog - and they're replicating themselves!

The first translation available in English of a key work by the twelfth-century Muslim philosopher Averroes, which reveals his controversial views about reason, religion, and humankind's relationship with God. Suitable both for scholars and interested readers, this unique text proves that today's disputes between religion, reason, and science are far from a new phenomenon.

QUESTIONS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN a key to the treasures of human knowledge, and individuals and nations who tend to question less come to acquire a reduced share from this vast treasure. Basically, it is the right of every person to ask questions and obtain their answers, and none can be deprived of this logical and rational privilege. The Noble Qur`an has repeatedly emphasized this aspect - ask those, who possess knowledge, about that of which you do not possess knowledge. The extensiveness of this Quranic ruling reveals that Islam does not recognize any limits or restrictions as far as the issue of questioning is concerned, and permits the Muslims and even the non-Muslims (despite appearing to be general in meaning, this verse, in reality is addressed to the non-Muslims) to pose every kind of question, including those pertaining to various doctrinal, social, ethical and political issues, to those who have knowledge about them. Exceptions to this rule are misleading questions asked with the intention of spoiling peoples faith, distorting constructive ideas, fermenting disturbance and confusion in the minds of the public, mere wrangling, baseless arguments, obstinacy and prejudice. In reality, these are not questions but destructive inhumane plots in the guise of questions. In any case, since the Noble Qur`an is a colossal encyclopaedia of divine sciences and human affairs, on numerous occasions and in connection with various verses, there are questions that come to the fore - a great number of which, due to lack of applicability in those periods, have remained unanswered in the books of past commentators.

                                    Book Description

The Politics of Human Frailty addresses the fraught and topical issue of the relationship between political liberalism and theology. Political liberalism is frequently denounced by theologians as individualist, relativist, and hubristic. In response, there has been a tendency in recent political theology to attempt the overcoming of political liberalism, with the hope of building a more ecclesiastical, virtuous, or community-oriented space. In an original and well-documented argument, Insole demonstrates that this negative characterisation of political liberalism is inadequate, both conceptually and historically.

By attending to thinkers such as Richard Hooker, Edmund Burke, Lord Acton, and John Rawls, Insole shows that a passion to protect the individual within liberal institutions can arise not from an illusory sense of self-sufficiency, but from an insight into our fallen condition, characterised by frailty, sin, and complexity. This strand of political liberalism arises from a sense of our solidarity in sin with others, and the hubris of judging our fellow citizens, when judgment belongs to God alone. Such a position would be at odds with theologically over-zealous appropriations of the theme of "liberty."

Insole concludes his book by showing that the proposed alternatives to political liberalism—such as can be found in the influential Radical Orthodoxy movement—are naïve, utopian, and dangerous, and in certain respects theologically impoverished.

From the supplier: Salvation carries different meanings depending on the framework of the believer. Wilfred Cantwell Smith believed that one is saved by his faith so long as he recognizes his obligations even if such realization is not translated to a concrete act. However, salvation should be elevated to a level where it transcends the illusions of both individuality and yearning. For that matter, Christian salvation should be articulated as the intersection between sinfulness and the love of Jesus Christ represented by his death on the cross.

Despite the long title, the book itself is a rather short treatise (75 pages). It also includes a translation of Pope Leo XIII's Encyclical Letter Aeterni Patris where he praises and encourages the revival of Thomism in philosophy. The text of On Reasons discusses a series of issues that separate Christianity from Islam, such as the Trinity, The Incarnation, The Crucifixion, The Eucharist, Purgatory as well as the relationship between Divine and Free Will. The words of Peter that all Christians should be able to give a reason of their hope in Christ serve as a governing backdrop to the discussion - conversion is not being attempted here, but merely a logical exposition from the Christian point of view showing that it is not irrational to hold the tenants in question. The treatment as a whole exhibits the superb degree of reasoned argumentation that one expects from Aquinas. This short little work, in addition to providing a concise summary of certain fundamental matters of Catholic doctrine, is especially topical in these times of ecumenism and dialogue with the East.
