Book Description
On January 22, 1959, Old Main Dormitory at Mississippi State University was home to 1,100 college students. But early on Friday morning, January 23rd, the students were homeless. Old Main was ablaze and the ruins of the largest student housing facility in the United States would later produce the charred body of one of its own. Extremely cold weather, final exams, and students gone home for semester break contributed to the very difficult task and seemingly endless confusion of trying to confirm that all residents of Old Main had escaped the devastating blaze. After three days of investigation, evidence pointed to the strong possibility that the fire had been deliberately set. Searchers found a human skull in the smoldering rubble. The crushed skull was not the result of the fire, a fall or failed escape. It appeared to be murder. Had the fire been deliberately set to cover up a murder? How in the world does college life lead to murder and arson? The investigation leads to the upscale social circles of the Deep South, influenced by big city visitors and money. Beneath the surface of this seemingly slow-paced, innocent college life lies the true story of Old Main Burning.

Not even mediocre.......2007-06-14
I bought this book at the MSU Bookstore thinking it was based on actual facts. It purports to be an account of a murder during the burning of Old Main Dormitory at Mississippi State University. Old Main did burn down--and that is the extent of reality in this book.
I was very disappointed in this book. The characters and situations were not at all believable. There was absolutely no suspense about the murder--and it was very poorly plotted. The romance was like reading a story from True Romance magazine--young hot man beds and woos older rich woman who coincidentally happens to have the money which had been cheated from his family years ago by her ex husband.
Sorry to hurt the author's feelings. I wish there was something more positive to say about the book. A nonfiction account of the burning of Old Main, with interviews of the many surviving residents would have been much more interesting. It's pretty obvious the author's forte is not fiction.
I was there and lived the "Burning of Old Main"........2007-01-04
A very good story of a true event. I was there when "old Main Burned" and this tale was woven in very good fashion. By the grace of God, I moved out of "Old Main" 3 weeks before it burned. My room was 2 stories above where the fire started and my friends and roommates lost everything they owned.

George R R Martin & Anne McCaffrey.......2007-02-18
Note: This review is for the item pictured, with stories by Terry Goodkind, George RR Martin, and Anne McCaffrey. It seems that the reviews run the range of available editions and volumes, so I just wanted to be clear.
Further, I'm reviewing only the two stories and not Goodkind's because due to limited time I only chose the two to read, and in my previous experience I haven't liked Goodkind's writing. I didn't read it, so I can't say good nor ill in this circumstance.
George R.R. Martin's tale, The Sworn Sword, tells of Dunk the Hedge Knight and his squire, Egg. Martin's strength is writing believable characters in a fantasy setting and in this tale he's at his best. Dunk, nearly 7 feet tall, illiterate, and poorly bred is sent to negotiate a peace with the Red Widow over water rights between two disputing Lordships. It's a tale of nobility and honor and is resolved in a brilliant contest of wills.
The edition I have includes the short story, Beyond Between, by Anne McCaffrey. This is a story about Moreta, the Weyrwoman from Fort Weyr riding on a borrowed dragon, Holth, in order to deliver medicine to the holds to prevent a contagious illness from decimating the population. She'd been riding all day, making jumps between space and time in order to get the deliveries completed and when they jumped for the last time, they were forever trapped between.
Long ago I'd stopped reading Pern novels because they were too juvenile and repetitive. I may have to change my mind. The elements of this story were very strong. Moreta explores the between and finds another trapped there, an ancient dragonrider, among the first of all of them, and she discovers ways to haunt the living from her netherworld prison. But above all, this is a story about love and loss and a willful desire to reunite with your life partner despite the costs. I loved it.

The second and third batches of intriguing stories in the Legends anthology.......2005-09-01
Well for starters, Amazon has the links for these ALL screwed up and I could only get to Volume 2 through a backwards method. And since the links are messed up, I can't load a review of Legends Volume 3 where it belongs, WITH Volume 3. So I'm going to review that at the bottom of this one. So this review is actually for parts 2 AND 3 of the Legends anthology.
Legends Volume 2--
New Spring by Robert Jordan
This was very hard to follow for new readers of the Wheel of Time series.
The gist seems to be that a great hero/leader, The Dragon, has been reborn and there are many who want to find him for different reasons. The evil Black Aja sisters want to destroy him and are going around murdering anyone young man they think may be the dragon. The rest of the Aja, and their allies, are looking for him to protect him and aid him in learning his abilities.
At least I think that is what it was about, and I listened more then once. I did grasp the idea of the Dragon and I understood there are different sects of the Aja, defined by their color. What the difference between them is I have no idea. I can only assume that is explained in the full length novels in the series.
The Sea and Little Fishes by Terry Pratchett
It is the time for the annual town fair, of which the favorite event is the witch competition. Granny Weatherwax has always one and this year people don't want her to participate. At the same time, Granny decides to go on a "friendly" binge, at the advice of her friend Nanny Og. But her attempts to be friendly backfire when everyone assumes she's only doing that to try and cause trouble.
I liked this story, even not having read anything else by this author. I especially loved Granny, in spite of her gruff and less then friendly attitude. She rang true to me, probably because everyone can think of at least one grumpy elderly person they know. Even though she is not the nicest of people, readers know there is more to her then meets the eye or else Nanny would not be friends with her.
The Grinning Man by Orson Scott Card
Alvin Maker and his young companion are passing through when they come across a young man, Davey Crockett grinning down a grizzly bear. it turns out the bear wins the match and that means Crockett becomes his "pet." So they travel around and bump in to Alvin again in a small village with a crook for a miller.
This story was somewhat corny, but amusing. Alvin seems like an intriguing fellow and will make readers want to know more about him, possibly reading other books in the series by this author. I especially liked the entirely different perspective given in to the person of Davy Crockett, and loved the idea of his relationship to the bear.
Legends Volume 3--
Debt of Bones by Terry Goodkind
A young woman goes to the high wizard of her land in order to seek his aid in rescuing her family from the rival land. She calls the wizard on a "Debt of Bones" between her mother and his father when he refuses, only to find that after he grudgingly agrees, this debt is not what she expected at all.
Interesting story that I enjoyed and was fairly easy to follow. There are a couple twists in the story to shock readers. I enjoyed visiting this world and would not be opposed to a future visit.
Dragonfly by Ursula K Le Guin
A young girl who desires to be trained in the ways of the wizards heads off on a journey with a former student of the wizards, in the hopes she can convince the wizards to break with tradition of only teaching boys, so she can learn magic. When she gets there, nothing goes as she hoped and she discovers a shocking secret about her lineage.
Not a bad story but confusing in many parts. Also, this author desperately needs a better editor as she's extremely repetitive and has a tendency to overuse words and phrases to the point it gets very annoying. It also gives a good glimpse in to the "politics" of the Earthsea world and how women are valued and thought of there.
The Burning Man by Tad Williams
To be honest I had no clue what this story was about. Something about a man who appears in fire but I couldn't even quite figure out why he appeared. I tried listening to this story a couple times and could not get in to it at all and had no clue what was happening. I finally gave up.
I tried to listen to this one three times and could not grasp it at all. this could be due to the fact I like to listen to books when driving so occasionally I miss things, but with almoste very other book I've "read" this way, I always come away with far more understanding of what happened and why then I did of this story.
If readers have not tried Tad Williams' works before, this is not the story with which to start. However, those who have read other books set in this world will likely understand and follow it much better then newcomers would.
Lovely........2004-05-11
Robert Silverberg (ed.), Legends, vol. 2 (Tor, 1998)
This is water in the desert for fans of fantasy series whose books have a tendency to have a long time between releases. Anne McCaffrey (Pern), George R. R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire), and Terry Goodkind (Sword of Truth) all contribute short novels to this volume in the Legends series, and all are well worth your time.
Goodkind's story, "Debt of Bones," leads off the trilogy, and deals with a time when Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander was much younger than he is in the Sword of Truth novels. Here, he's pitted against Panis Rahl, and must decide whether to put himself, and the fate of the Midlands, in danger in order to fulfill a debt of bones to the daughter of a deceased sorceress. One has come to expect strong storytelling and easy turning of pages from Goodkind, and he does not disappoint here. Martin's story, "The Hedge Knight," follows. Again taking place some time before the events in the Song of Ice and Fire books, "he Hedge Knight" follows the squire of a newly deceased mercenary, who has a desire to make his name in a tournament against some of the biggest names in the business (including a number of Targaryens, who at the time of this story have not yet been banished; in fact, they play a major part in the story, which should be a pleasant surprise to many Ice and Fire fans). Martin's work on this series is always a pleasure, and once again, the is no disappointment to be found here, though one wonders about the loose end to be found.
The biggest surprise of the bunch, to me, was McCaffrey's "Runner of Pern." I've always shied away from the Pern books, for no real reason. This story is a welcome change of pace from the two that precede it; rather than battles, jousting, and the rest, this is a quiet romantic coming-of-age tale that hits just the right spot, like a lemon ice after a boeuf bourguignon. It's convinced me to go back and try the Pern novels, as McCaffrey's style is simple and engaging. Like the others, she keeps the pages turning.
Definitely a worthwhile piece of work. I shouldn't have to sell those who are already enmeshed in the various series covered here, but others will find it a perfect sampling to see if the three titans covered here are to their tastes. I can almost guarantee they will be. ****
Good stuff........2003-07-20
I have to admit I bought this book for "The Hedge Knight". I enjoyed the other stories too, but I can't get enough of Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. The Hedge Knight gives us a little history of a few of the families from the other stories. I especially like how it makes the Targaryens more tangible. They seem almost like a family of crazy, yet mystical people in the other books, but here we see them as your typical royal family with troubles like every one else. I eagerly await the next installment of the Dunk and Egg novellas.
Some advice that may be helpful.......2003-04-05
This version of legends is divided into three parts, if you search for Robert Silverberg you can find it in one volume for about the same price, so that you get all three parts together for about a third of the price
As to the book,I can only review the second part (I made the mistake of ordering legends 2 thinking that it was all 11 stories, but it was really just three.) The three stories that were in it were:Debt of Bones by Terry Goodkind
The Hedge Knight by George R.R. Martin
and Runner of Pern, by Anne McCaffrey
Of the three I read, The Hedge Knight was definitely the best, it has alot of action and the grimly real, but exciting story that only Martin can provide. It is set in the Seven Kingdoms of Martin's excellent series, A Song of Ice and Fire.
Debt of Bones was good, and it showed me what type of a writer Goodkind is,(I haven't read anything by him but that, but it got me interested and I bought the first book in his series, The Sword Of Truth.
Runner of Pern was probably the one I least liked, I knew nothing about Anne McCaffrey, and it was okay, but not nearly as good as The Hedge Knight.
Be sure to buy the edition with all 11 stories, I have just ordered the full edition, Most all of the writers in the 11 stories, I have read before and it is interesting to have a short work to read by them, about a different part of their world. This will also help you get aquainted with writers you havn't read before, see their writing style, and decide if you want to read more of them.

The undersea research habitat known as Tethys, deep beneath the surface of the Atlantic, exists to provide information about the unexplored ocean depths--until a close encounter with a monstrous creature of unknown origin sparks a tense battle of secrecy and betrayal. Steele (Labyrinth of Night) deftly portrays the tenuous nature of humanity's relationship with the sea in this taut, suspenseful sf adventure, which should appeal to fans of underwater action.
Customer Reviews:
Decent thriller, barely science fiction though .......2005-07-26
_Oceanspace_ by Allen Steele is a near future undersea thriller set in the year 2011, one that seemed pretty believable, a story that could occur at some point, though I think perhaps not as soon as the year of the novel's setting.
The primary locale of _Oceanspace_ is the largely self-sufficient undersea research station _Tethys_, located off the coast of Florida (a map would have been helpful but not essential). Actually, _Tethys_ is two stations. Above the waves is a facility not unlike an offshore oil rig, _Tethys 1_ which contains administrative facilities, a landing pad for VTOL aircraft, and other structures. The main research station, _Tethys 2_ is located 328 feet (100 meters) below, connected to _Tethys 1_ via a snorkel tube (which allows fresh air into the undersea habitat) and an interesting device called the OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) power plant, a series of large intake and discharge pipes, condensators, evaporators, and other devices designed to move cold water up from deep beneath the sea and warm water from the surface to run turbines to produce electricity, some of which is used to run desalination devices to provide water for the station. Moving between the two portions is not quick or easy, as _Tethys 2_ is under higher pressure, about ten atmospheres, and to avoid decompression sickness crew members must use special facilities to allow their bodies to adjust.
I found _Tethys_ well described and a believable and though I am certainly no expert, a workable design. The beginning of the book had a two page diagram of the station, focusing largely on the undersea portion, which I found helpful.
The primary purpose of the privately owned station (built and run by the Yemaya corporation) is to facilitate the undersea mining of manganese nodules on the seafloor, a service performed by autonomous robotic submersibles, which harvest from a designated portion of the seafloor and are periodically relieved of their cargo by a manned submersible. Almost as important though is the harvest and study of organisms collected from deep sea hydrothermal vents, "black smokers," which are used to produce lucrative chemicals and other biotech products. In addition, Yemaya rents out space on _Tethys 2_ to visiting marine biologists and geologists.
There are several plotlines followed in the book. One plot involves industrial espionage, the nature of which does not become evident until later on in the novel. I found that storyline pretty interesting and thought it had an exciting climax. A second plotline involved possible sea monsters; the first chapter, one of the best in the book, vividly described an attack on a manned submersible that was going to relieve a robotic harvester of its cargo of manganese nodules. The sub's operator, Joe Niedzwiecki, barely escapes with his life as the huge creature attacks and nearly destroys his vehicle. One of the main characters of the book, Judith Lipscomb, a researcher based at the station with her submarine operator husband Peter, became obsessed with the creature, as in the past tracking down sea monsters had been a hobby of hers. When a new vent field is discovered, she hoped to use the mission to map and survey it from a research submarine to investigate the wreckage of Niedzwiecki's submarine and maybe even spot the creature. Though I do not wish to give too much away, I found that thread not explored to the degree I would have liked it; the creature in the end pretty much remained a mystery. I imagined maybe some huge revelation, a major discovery, maybe people fighting for their lives on _Tethys 2_ (thinking that perhaps this was why Steele went to such efforts to describe the facility) but alas that was not to be.
Other plotlines involve the interaction of the various characters. The Lipscomb's play host their niece, Andie Lipscomb, a seventeen-year old allowed to visit her aunt and uncle, and she went from some resentment at being there to being a valuable addition to the mission. I am glad they didn't make her out to be some sort of supergenius; I found her pretty believable, though I thought she had access to more things than would be probably happen in real life. The station also was host to a visiting reporter for _Millennium_ magazine (apparently a hipper version of _National Geographic_), one Leslie Sun, an aggressive, underhanded, pushy woman with designs on Peter Lipscomb, attempting to seduce him. I found her pretty one dimensional, put there to be hated, and didn't care much for her character. I have seen journalists beat up in other novels and while some certainly believe they may deserve it I don't know that I do. Still, she was integral to some of the other plots.
Not a bad book, it had a good pace. I found the dialogue almost a tiny bit corny at times; not most of the time, most of the time it was fine, but just once in a while I would roll my eyes at some exchange, particularly the occasional joke or humorous remark. Occasionally an emotional reaction did not ring true with me, such as in one instance when a very upset Judith started laughing over some off-color remark made by someone else. As I have said, I wished that the sea monster angle was better explored, though I guess Steele was going for mystery rather than revelation. The overall story was believable, and except for the habitat itself and the level of technology on some of the submarines, the story was almost not science fiction, more of a straightforward thriller. It was apparent that for the most part that Steele had done some research, proudly noting that with a two page bibliography.
3.5 stars-fun quick read.......2005-07-15
Alan steele has crafted a fun and interesting story that gives you a good feel for the ocean depths in which his characters interact. There a few high points of excitement but mostly this is a book where characters have to make very human decisions: one man decides whether or not he should cheat on his wife, another whether to betray industrial secrets. All of these scenes were well done but not extremely profound. The strongest part of the book is the atmosphere, you feel the depths and are lured by the mystery of the ocean. While this book is by no means a great piece of sci-fi it is well worth picking up a copy. The main reason being that this book never tries to be more than it is, which is an enjoyable night's read.
Undersea Pleaser.......2005-05-20
Allen Steele proves once again that he could easily move into the adventure market if he wanted to broaden his horizons.
The action kicks off undersea when submersible pilot Joe Niedziwicki nearly gets killed by a giant sea serpent while collecting manganese nodules from a deep sea mining robot. Joe is rescued by Peter Lipscomb, a coworker testing subs for the Yamaya Corporation, which has all the book's characters employed at Tethys sea station, moored near the North American continent by the Blake Plateau and comprised of a station above the water, Tethys I, and undersea station Tethys II.
Peter's wife Judith, also employed by Yamaya, is a marine biologist interested in sea monsters. Judith cuts her Dominican vacation with Dr. Charles Toussaint, her and Peter's former professor, short when she hears Joe's tale. She and Charles rush to Tethys, where they're joined by Peter's niece Andie and slutty, nosy reporter Leslie Sun, there to write an article on Tethys for Millennium magazine.
They spend a few days topside before descending to Tethys II and, for Judith and Andie, a dangerous submarine journey. Peter stays at Tethys, where Leslie makes her move. Charles stays in order to conduct some corporate espionage, trying to sell a vial of water obtained from a black smoker to a rival company. He ups the stakes when Judith's submarine mission finds a new vent field near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
The action never quite reaches much of a peak, yet the writing was compelling to the last page, and the drama between the characters moved at a steady pace. There was always something happening, even if events never reached fever pitch. I just reminded myself that this is SF, not Dirk Pitt. In keeping, the ending was quiet, lightly touched with irony, and not an explosive blow-out. Though tamer than most undersea adventures I've read, it was a very good read with likeable characters and never a dull moment. There is only one thing I would change: I'd have the sea monster eat the bad guys.
very disappointing.......2004-08-18
The book is not very original. The human characters are déjà vus, the `scary' sea monster poorly developed, the plot slowed down by detailed technical descriptions that may interest only an engineer, and the dialogues loaded with vulgarity. I was very disappointed.
Engineering-Fi, Not Sci-Fi.......2003-07-18
This book was journalistic fiction, not unlike Truman Capote's IN COLD BLOOD. The author had to list 30 sources for the material on seabed mineral mining and on the hydrothermal black smoker theory for the origin of earthly life. I suppose the elusive sea serpent could qualify as fantasy, but that's stretching the genre termed Sci-Fi.
That is not to say that the story was not a thriller, strung together with all the craft of a Stephen KIng. But when one wants this type of space soap opera there is plenty on TV. What the story lacks is a speculative framework that places its characters outside the normal, work a day milieu-in one word, imagination.

Love this book and everything about it. I went to go buy one for a cooking-clueless friend for her wedding and shame on me for not looking closely at the size dimensions of the book. The cheaper copy is a palm-sized paperback... What a pointless format for a cookbook! They should stop printing it in this format. The recipes are far from conveniently on a one-page glance. I got this book hoping for some great recipes and help with planning. The planning aspect of this book is pretty good, but the recipes are pretty bland. I have made 6 recipes so far, and all of them seem to be missing something. I can play with them and tweek them, but I am not very happy about a recipe book that every recipe needs working on. If you like full flavor foods and simple food with gormet leanings, I would recommend a Rachel Ray book instead. She gives lots of menu planning/grocery shopping help as well and her recipes are always fabulous.
De-Lish!!!.......2007-09-05
All of the recipes that I have tried from this book have be fabulous! Even the picky eaters in my family are eating things they never imagined eating & liking. I definitely recommend this book!
Great tasting and fast family meals.......2007-08-27
I have two small children and a picky husband. It's hard to find things that they will all eat. I was pleased with the selections in this book. I have made several of the meals and they have really enjoyed them. The meals are easy to prepare and use common ingredients.
