Book Description

"Notes from a Dying Planet is a concerned, passionate, and informed survey of the environmental problems facing our planet, with gems of succinct essays interspersed with the reality of daily news. Written from the perspective of a very well informed citizen with a solid scientific background, it conveys in clear language the many challenges we face, convinces us of the folly of continuing on our present course, and suggests useful steps that each of us as individuals can take toward making our planet a sustainable habitat for all species." - Jeffrey A. McNeely, Chief Scientist, IUCN-The World Conservation Union, Gland, Switzerland

Internationally respected neuroscientist Paul Brown asks why we are doing so little about overpopulation, global warming and the current mass extinction. He describes how these three threats could end civilization as we know it, and possibly finish off our entire species, by the end of this century. Brown examines the biological and cultural evolution of our species, and how they influence our behavior. He describes some of the proposed solutions to problems like the energy crisis, explains why they're too narrow in scope, and proposes broader approaches. He also takes us week by week through crucial events unfolding around the globe. Written for a lay audience, Notes from a Dying Planet provides all the background needed for each topic.

"Paul Brown has written a book that is at once unique, scary, and exciting. It is unique because of the format, scary because the author tries to be honest with the reader, and exciting because if we all become as committed as Brown is we will reverse the environmental trends that are undermining our future." - Lester Brown, Founder and President, Earth Policy Institute, and author of Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble.

5 out of 5 stars A useful Reference.......2007-06-13

NOTES FROM A DYING PLANET is a ready reference for anyone interested in the present debates about global warming, the energy crisis, biodiversity and related concerns such as over population. In one volume the reader will have short, well written essays on many related topics which she may carry with her. The book, Brown tells us, is one person's search for sustainability. He recognizes that it is not enough to relate the frightening decline of world wide species to resource wars. We also need to appreciate how the histories of agriculture and mythology have played into our attitudes today. What does the religious injunction to be fruitful and multiply mean for us today? One of his favorite metaphors is how to boil a frog. Brown fears we are like the frog that fails to notice the water is beginning to boil. Not much time is left to us to address planetary problems: the clock is ticking.

5 out of 5 stars You are going to love this book!.......2007-01-30

"NOTES" is a truly epic book of magnificent proportions. An extremely well researched and thoroughly documented book that carefully peels away the layers of the fallacious arguments of the anti-global-warming special interest groups. It is as much a page-turner as the best mystery novel. "NOTES" clearly defines humanity's population and global warming problems in conversational tones; it goes on to provide workable, practical solutions. It is a "must read" for every politician on the planet. If you never read another book in your life, read this one! The continued existence of our species depends on it. You will find it very difficult to put this book down once you start it. I'm waiting for its sequel with eager anticipation.

          Book Description

Will Mendelsohn is a modern-day Darwin whose first book on extinction has made him a great success. To get underway with work on his follow-up, he sets off on a worldwide research trip. He makes a special visit to Assam, a state in northeast India, so that he can spend time with his mother's friend Mim, a Holocaust survivor in frail health. But once he meets Mim's enigmatic neighbor, a married expatriate screenwriter named Grace Tagore, Will's brief stop turns into an extended stay. As the two are drawn by their haunted pasts into a transformative affair, Assam erupts in political turmoil, setting off an irrevocable chain of events that forever alter their lives.

With a remarkable gift for language and storytelling, author Janice Deaner pens a novel of extraordinary depth and power, where amid the lavish tea gardens of a beautiful yet strife- ridden India, a compelling story of romance, friendship, and self-discovery brilliantly unfolds.

4 out of 5 stars Flawless first half, then an unfortunate melodramatic turn.......2002-04-15

This book was written exquisitely. The author chose every word for its full value, possibly its strongest point. The characters she fleshed out to the fullest extent were realistic, and I enjoyed the fact that she wrote the book credibly from a male point of view, a very neat trick for a female author.

I enjoyed its slow and languid pacing during the first half, most particularly during Will's stay in India. While not meant to be the focal point, Will's relationship with Mim, to me, was the best part of the book.

Unfortunately the book took a very melodramatic turn at about the second half. Involving a very real historical figure such as Hitler even somewhat centrally to the plot, for instance, is hard to achieve credibly. The story evolved rather abruptly from a languid, realistic story of Will's loves and needs (different types of love with different types of people) to some kind of ethnic war-torn adventure tale. It is not that it was done poorly, because it was not; it is that it belongs in another book, which belongs in another genre.

I still enjoyed the book deeply. The ending had a nice circularness to it (the story coming almost full circle); a nice completion.

                  Book Description

Ciress is a world that runs on magic, and those with the most magic run the world. Genevieve Villard was in line to become a great leader, but during her Rite of Ascension something went horribly wrong. Her sister Giselle, a flibbertigibbet society girl, was conferred not only the power that was rightly Genevieve's but that of every other Guild Master on Ciress. Now Giselle must come to terms with being the magical protector of her entire planet - if the Guild Masters let her live that long. Vibrant color and lush detail brings the magic of MYSTIC to life each month, as Giselle learns to live with her strange new power and the responsibility that goes with it.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Crossgen's best title (it's NOT only girl comic).......2005-08-13

OK, after reading Sandman, I tried Preacher. First book was great, others not so. I tried all kinda books, some were good like first issues of Strangers in Paradise and Mangas like Oh My Goddess and Blade of Immortal, there were some nice Marvel Knights like Paul Jenkins' stuff, but then I discovered Crossgen, well written comics which have well illustrated stories. I LOVED Meridian, The First, and , of course Mystic. They can be rated teen or all ages. Buy all trades of Mystic, both original writer and Tony Bedard were great.

I got all trades of Mystic and read comics that follow. It's a SHAME if nobody publishes those comics collected as trade five, six and so on, because they get greater and greater near the end.

As far as I know, Mystic and just a slightly weaker Meridian have story ending logically, there is a wrap up. Sojourn was more popular, but CrossGen bankrupted before story ended. Sniff :(

4 out of 5 stars Female power abounds.......2003-08-04

Rite of Passage binds the first seven issues of Mystic. At first glance, it looks like a typical chauvinistic guy comic with scantily clad large bosomed women. Thankfully, they turn out to have brains as well as beauty. At the heart though, it is a story of the power of sisters, and how, in spite of typical sibling rivalry, when one is in trouble, the other always comes through.
Magic makes the work of Ciress go round, and Genevieve has spent years studying and preparing for her induction into the Guild Masters, a group of leaders that protect and control magic. When her socialite younger sister Giselle shows up to support Gen, Giselle unintentionally usurps all of the power ý including that meant for her sister. The seven magical spirits are drawn into Giselle, whom it turns out has been marked as a powerful mystic. Genevieve, though angry at first, quickly sides with her sis when the Guild Masters would destroy Giselle to get their powers back.
Much of the first seven issues is caught up in setting the basic plot of a character who needs to become a hero but isnýt sure how. A mentor and guide in a slightly feline form offers advice along the way as Giselle fights against those who would strip her of her newfound powers. It is unclear by the end of issue seven exactly what the Guild Masters did and what the new Mystic will do, but the drama is high and characters interesting. The art is bold, rich and vibrant, with beautifully filled in backgrounds. The lavishly illustrated pages are a homage to nouveaux style art popularized in the early 19th and 20th centuries, devilish monsters and creepy skulls and roses abound. The bonus of the seven in one edition are commentary by the creators, writers and artists. All seven covers are appended.
I didnýt find this appealing enough to want to collect the whole set, but my personal tastes in comics run more to romance manga style or fantasy rather than scifi. Recommended for most graphic novel collections.

5 out of 5 stars Great art, good story, and really...er...'hot' costumes.......2003-01-18

Giselle is your ultimate rich, beautiful, party animal and she likes it that way. Her sister Genevieve is the responsible one who is about to be promoted to guild master of one of the seven major guilds and gain access to the spirit of the founder of her guild (a magical spirit who has seen just about everything).

All Giselle wants to do is party. All Genevieve wants is her sister to show up for the promotion and not embarass her. Someone or something else wants to shake up the world before it's too late. So suddenly Giselle has all the power of the seven guild spirits, the former guildmasters after her life, more power than she can handle and a heck of a lot more responsibility than she ever wanted. It does make life interesting, while she can keep it.

The color quality and other production values are excellent. The art is very good (the monsters look monstrous, the beautiful women look beautiful, etc). The story is dramatic and compelling.

When you need to stop a war, the Stainless Steel Rat is the man you turn to. Not that he is that keen to be your average grunt type stuck on a planet with a crazy warlord, etc.

However, given the man who killed his teacher is there, he is more keen than you would expect to give it a shot.

5 out of 5 stars Not the first in the series but a good starting point.......2004-06-20

I see that the cover art has changed since the first edition. I like the original artwork better and let me explain why... When the Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted was published I was lucky enough to get a job in my school's library in the back room where books were prepared for library use or repaired. This book was one of my first that I bound in the plastic dust covers. While carefully putting on the cover I had to read the blurb on the inside of the paper jacket. How could I resist a cover with such an impishly cute main character? The blurb made me want to read the book and so I read the first chapter in between working on other books. I knew I couldn't get away with hording the book so I bought a copy for myself (in paper back). I've since been lucky enough to find a hard back first addition so I'm registering my paperback copy.

Since this book introduced me to the Stainless Steel Rat series and to Harry Harrison as an author, it's still my favorite of all his books.

                  3 out of 5 stars A sequel to a prequel........2000-05-03

First there was "The Stainless Steel Rat", our introduction to Slippery Jim DiGriz, aka the Stainless Steel Rat, a high-tech, futuristic conman and thief, who is caught after a long and successful career by the galactic special corps, and recruited to join them because it takes a thief to catch a thief. Then followed four more books in chronological order, "The Stainless Steel Rat's Revenge", "The Stainless Steel Rat Saves The World", "The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You", and "The Stainless Steel Rat For President". Then, apparently growing bored with the direction his stories were taking, Harrison retreated to the beginning and wrote the prequel, "A Stainless Steel Rat Is Born". This book is the sequel to that one, and is in turn followed by "The Stainless Steel Rat Sings The Blues".

There are dangers to writing prequels that were unplanned at the time the original story was written; this book mostly avoids them. It is necessary to make it plausible that the character/s have had these experiences prior to the later stories, and that their characters have developed from these experiences into the character/s they are at the beginning of the original. It is easy to see how the Jim DiGriz from this book became the Jim DiGriz at the beginning of the original. It is also necessary, and much more difficult, to make a story that is interesting, but yet have it remain plausible that the events in it are not referred back to in the chronologically later, but earlier written, stories. Surprisingly, that too is managed well in this book.

What that leaves us with is a book which succeeds well at what it sets out to do: to be a fun romp, action-packed, plot-driven, not to be taken any more seriously than it takes itself, which is not very, but enjoyable brain-candy. The dialogue is a bit stilted, the characters are somewhat two-dimensional, the "philosophy" propounded by the members of the alien culture is downright silly, and Harrison never lets a little thing like consistent characterization get in the way of keeping the plot lively; DiGriz is supposed to be brilliant, but he makes enough stupid mistakes to keep himself in one exciting crisis after another. This isn't anything like great art, but it IS fun, and sometimes that's all you want. For those times, this is a perfectly enjoyable light read.

5 out of 5 stars It was an exciting, thrilling adventure, I loved it.......1999-04-12

When I first starting reading Harry Harrison, I thought that he was an average writer. Later, however, I realized that he is far from average,. His earlier Stainless Steel Rat were not as good, but I think he was just getting used to the Slippery Jim diGriz character. "Stailess Steel Rat Gets Drafted" was not his best but definetly one of them.I would tell anyone to read this, in a second. Thanks for taking the time to read this review.

5 out of 5 stars great little book.......2007-09-15

I really like this great little book. I have already tried out four of the recipes and they are simple and quite delicious. Rachael truly does deliver a 30 minute meal. The Shepherd's pie took a little longer, but was really worth it. I have since bought several other cookbooks by Rachael Ray and am very happy with all of them. Many of the recipes use common ingredients that I already have on hand in my kitchen. I recommend this book.

Rachael Ray's sparkling personality is reflected in this wonderful little book. The recipes are simple and quick, just as you would expect. The book itself is a nice size; the colors, graphics and print are clean and easy to read through. Not only does this book make a nice addition to my collection of cookbooks, but is one that I actually use as more than just decoration.
