A collection of some of Faulkner's earliest prose........2000-06-01
This collection of short prose pieces was originally published in the _New Orleans Time Picayune_ in 1925; however, I'm not sure that Faulkner would be entirely pleased that they have been re-exposed to the light of day. The writing is rough, even amateurish, and the story lines of the pieces are often trite and stock. But in spite of the general weakness of the writings, there are thematic elements and character types in the pieces that would reappear in Faulkner's mature writings. What is absolutely amazing is that just two years after the publication of these mediocre writings, Faulkner had published two novels and was deeply involved in the creation of his masterpiece, _The Sound and the Fury_.

Benjamin Franklin Butler descends from a long line of soldiers and fighting men. As a small, sickly boy, he discovered in himself a great love of books and reading which fostered a love of learning that led him to college. He was "a youth of keen vision, fiery, inquisitive, fearless; nothing yet developed in him but ardent curiosity to know, and perfect memory to retain." He graduated with a keen desire to practice law. He taught school, read law, occasionally practiced law and joined the City Guard where he rose quickly through the ranks. At the age of 22 he was admitted to the bar and built a lucrative practice. He was also interested in politics and was elected to the Massachusetts legislature, once to the assembly and once to the senate. He strongly believed that the Union should be preserved with sympathy and understanding from both the North and the South. As a result he was elected a delegate to the democratic convention held at Charleston in April, 1860. At this point the story begins.

Trivia Pursuit Italian Style! .......2007-01-03
The _Ultimate Italian Trivia_ by Scott Paul Frush is an exciting and marvelous compilation of everything Italian rolled into one book. It boasts over 1,600 amazing trivia and the book delivers what it promises! Chapters run the gamut from the romantic Italian language, astronomy, economics, the Holy Catholic Church and government to science, sports, travel, the arts and everything in between.
Being of Italian descent, I was immediately drawn to the chapters on "Cuisine & Culinary Contributions" and to "Holidays, Traditions & People". Then, because of my interest in genealogy, "Italian Americans & Immigration" also captured my interest. I must admit though, I began learning what I didn't know almost immediately and then I was hooked on discovering the treasures of this book from its beginning pages!
_The Ultimate Italian Trivia_ will make an excellent addition to your reference library or an ideal gift for anyone interested in Italy and the Italian people and culture. Well done, Bravo!

Being a self-proclaimed history buff and Italian culture connoisseur with an avid talent and penchant for writing; Mr. Frush has written this hilariously funny and very informative book called "Ultimate Italian Trivia"
"Ultimate Italian Trivia" is full of everything you wanted to know about Italy, the Italian people and their culture. What is a non-Italian doing writing a book about Italian trivia? Who knows, but he sure has done his homework. Frush has written more than just a trivia book, he has written a non-official reference manual on Italy. He may not include every detail of Italian history, but with the information packed into these 254 pages; you will sound like an expert. Frush takes you from the B.C. (Before Christ) era to the present day and everything in between. Why is the town of Rome, Georgia named after Rome, Italy? It is built on seven hills just like Rome, Italy. Unbelievable facts that are scattered throughout this ingenious book will keep you turning the pages. Had it not been for the Italians, we would still be wiping our noses with our sleeves; read the book to see what the Italians invented. Just a few of the topics Fush touches on are: Art, Music and Architecture, Government Organization and Leadership, Science, Biology and Inventions and many others.

Climb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Islandhas enthralled (and caused slight seasickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson's most famous book. With it's dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
Jim Hawkins, the son of an innkeeper, longs for adventure. When a guest of the inn, a coarse old bully named Billy Bones, reveals a map showing the whereabouts of Captain Flint's treasure, Jim and his mother outwit both Bones and the other pirates who are after him, fleeing with the map to Squire Trelawney. The squire and his friend charter a schooner and recruit a crew, including Jim, and the adventure begins.
Robert Louis Stevenson excelled at character description, emotional conveyance, and storytelling. With Michael York performing the piece, Treasure Island remains a classic!
Customer Reviews:
This is how a pirate story should be. Sorry, Johnny Depp........2007-10-06
I'm not a young boy, and yet I love this book that has been traditinally associted with kids every since it was written. In fact, it is one of my favorite books, and why not? Here is a book that first and foremost recognizes that a pirate adventure should be, well, an adventure, and makes sure to put the fun, danger, and excitement in the front with all the silly, pop-corn vibe action any kid could ask for.
It begins in England in seaside inn, told by the voice of hero Jim Hawkins. His parents own the inn, and one of the strangest guests is a man named Billy Bones, a guy who practically has split-personality in is treatment of young Jim. It turns out that the man is wanted for possessing a map to a legendary treasure. When pirates attack in an awesome pirate attack (how else can I describe it?) Jim finds himself aboard a ship on an adventure to find the treasure.
What follows is a classic, pulse-racing adventure of good and evil, pirates and good guys, and island fun, complete with all the necessary twists and turns and danger and betrayal.
It's not all fluff--Stevenson adds some surprisingly deep human emotions that actually serve to make the adventure that much more powerful. But never fear, it does not turn into a soap opera no matter how many subsequent movies want it to.
As I said before, it's an adventure story of piracy on the high seas, and that's what makes it so great.
Pieces of eight, pieces of eight!.......2007-09-04
Treasure Island is the first greatest pirate story of all times. The young and brave Jim Harkins, the scary but honorable Long John Silver, the smart and solid Doctor Livesey. Frankly I could go on and on listing interesting characters, major or otherwise, but let me just say that, having never before read the novel, I totally enjoyed it. It has everything, from a blind beggar to a treasure map to drunken pirates, a parrot, and lots of plotting. Who is with the good guys? Who is with the bad guys? Who is out for themselves? Read and see.

A tale of pirates, peglegs, parrots, purloining and perfidery and old Blind Pew.
A lost treasure map is wanted by many, who are willing to kill to get it. These men are pirates, and a young lad, Jack Hawkins, and the odd other innocent get caught up in the struggle.
A source of much classic pirate caricature and pretty enjoyable.
Pirates, Parrots and Buried Treasure!.......2007-08-17
By Laura B.
Treasure Island is an amazing story of adventure on the high seas, a tale of betrayal and friendship; an exciting saga of pirates on a search for buried treasure, this is a story that any age group will love. I have only seen Treasure Island movies in the past, and on reading the book I found the story different from what I've known. I am going to tell you a little about the book, I don't want to spoil the story so I won't tell you the entire thing.
The story first tells of how young Jim Hawkins got Captain Flint's Treasure map from Captain Billy Bones. Jim found the map in Billy Bones' sea chest when Jim and his mother were looking through the chest for the money that Bones owed them. Because you see Bones had died during his attempt to escape the evil pirates who were after him. So Jim and his mother had to hurriedly look for the money, and while his mother was trying to count out the right amount of money Jim took Captain Flint's map.
After the pirates attacked the "Admiral Benbow" that was the name of the inn that the Hawkins family owned, Jim goes and gets help from Dr.Livesey and Squire Trelawney and together they board a ship called the Hispaniola and set a course for Treasure Island.
On board Jim becomes friends with the ship's cook Long John Silver (who owns a parrot named Cap'n Flint after the infamous pirate captain), but little does Jim know that Silver is actually a pirate and an ex-member of Captain Flint's crew. Jim soon learns of a sinister plot being made by Silver to steal the treasure that might endanger him and his friends.
I won't say anymore. If you're the type that enjoys stories of pirates, treasure, and a parrot that says "pieces of eight, pieces of eight" you'll have to read the book. You can also read other Robert Louis Stevenson books like Kidnapped which I haven't read but it's supposed to be good, but the book you'll enjoy most is Treasure Island.
Lives up to its reputation as a classic.......2007-05-10
I read to my 11 and 9 year old daughters, a chapter a night and this one was perfect. It's not only a great story line, but allows children to identify with the main character. The graphic scenes describing various altercations between the crew and owners is relevant and realistic.

The quest is to safely reach the end.......2007-06-04
Bulis was never my favorite of the stable of writers when he was doing the Missing Adventures back for Virgin, his work was readable and showed some sparks of imagination but it also came across as oddly flat and joyless, professional without being exciting. Thus I wasn't exactly expecting great miracles and wonders from this novel, and in all honesty I basically got what I expected. The Fifth Doctor and Peri get caught up in a search for a mythical treasure that was hidden on a planet thousands of years before and is supposed to be massively impressive. But it's not just them involved, you have an entire cast of characters broken up into teams all hunting for the same proported treasure. How they get to it and what they endure and how it ends up is what the book is about. And it's interesting but not terribly exciting, it's more workmanlike than anything else and more than once it seemed like Bulis was just going through the Doctor Who motions to get to the ending, without bothering to put any kind of spark into it. The Doctor and Peri come off well enough, I guess, the latter a sort of generic cheery curious companion, while the Doctor gets the broad stroke of the Quiet Doctor, without really bringing across the manic energy he would unexpectedly bring to the role, especially when he realized he was onto something. For the most part he just sort of hangs out and lets the plot go by. Thus the focus of the book is more on the other treasure seekers, none of whom are really that fascinating on their own. You have the gents with ulterior motives who get more and more obsessed as time goes on, the seeker who isn't so keen on getting the treasure by the end because the real treasure can only be found in the heart, the greedy criminals who eventually get what's coming to them and so on and so forth. Oh, and an inspector, just to keep things interesting. But with so many characters the nuances are just sort of glossed over, even with long stretches devoted to showing how they get through the traps and stuff. The traps themselves are not that amazing and the solutions woefully easy (they have to be, as the criminal portion of the search isn't exactly a brain trust, although they do have the Doctor along for part of it). The final revelation of the treasure is kind of what you'd expect is that the actual treasure is warm and fuzzy and something we all share in this great world. Even the supposed big side mystery, who the heck is the guy pretending to be Falstaff gets an explanation that boils down to "He wasn't hugged enough as a child". So while the novel isn't necessarily bad, it's not especially good either, it will kill a few hours of your time but won't really excite or engage you in any meaningful way. You'll just keep turning pages until it's done and never think of it again.
You don't want to know..........2001-01-27
The Doctor and new companion Peri, having left the desolate planet of Sarn, arrive in Astroville and witness the murder of a shopkeeper. As he dies in the arms of the travellers, he gives them the coordinates to the lost treasure of Rovan. So off on a treasure hunt go the travellers, but find they are not the only ones and that they must compete in a number of challenges to win through...
I think the worst Doctor Who book in the BBC range, 'The Ultimate Treasure' is a shocker! Characterisations of the Doctor and Peri are off, the whole treasure hunt competition makes no great degree of sense, the puzzles and challenges aren't that challenging, and... Well, I could go on and on.
I'm not giving this 1 star because, despite my dislike of it, Christopher Bulis is sufficiently professional that it hangs together fine. Not pretty, but fine.
For Doctor Who completists only, and don't say I didn't warn you!
A story rich in themes but straightforward in narrative........1998-06-27
Thoroughly enjoyable Dr. Who. The Ultimate Treasure is a good, fun read. It perfectly portrays many of the themes of the television show in a novel form--such as good and evil, greed and ambition vs. compassion and fellowship, etc. The many support characters are strong and well drawn, the main plot engaging and entertaining as the reader quests alongside this varied group of personalities in search of the "Ultimate Treasure." In the grand tradition of a true treasure hunt, obstacles both external and internal often bar the way. Of course, characterization of the Doctor is always of paramount importance in these books, and the author does a good, if not great job. All the Doctor's actions are always in keeping with the best of Peter Davison's portrayal, but his dialogue doesn't always ring true as Davison might have delivered it. However, the author succeeds with companion Peri very nicely. In this book she is a curious young woman very open to new experiences, a refreshing characterization which is well in keeping with how actress Nicola Bryant portrayed Peri early on in her run of episodes. The ending seems at first to disappoint, but after due consideration, the real impact of the ending sinks in, leaving a light, satisfied feeling to walk away from this book with. I recommend this title over many of the other books in the various Dr. Who series.

Book Description
Asia Renning was adopted by Jerry and Adair Renning when she was two years old, even though she was considered too institutionalized to be able to bond with a family. Asia's struggles with a condition which required a colostomy, as well as autism, has led her family on a quest to help her maximize her potential. In this book, Adair Renning details the family's search for effective treatments, including mega-vitamins, auditory integration therapy, food and environmental allergy treatments and treatment for Leaky Gut Syndrome. This is one family's story, but it represents a celebration of the strength of the human spirit, when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds.

Adoptive family's story-triumph over developm. difficulties.......2000-03-05
It's been a few years since I last read this wonderful book, but I still remember it as one which was very helpful to me after my overseas adoption of a handicapped child. At a time when many families would send the child back because of so many hard to handle disabilities, this family stuck it out and found the ultimate treasure. If your child struggles with developmental, physical, or eating disorders, this is a good book to read to help you realize there is hope in investing continuous love and hard work in your child. If you've adopted and been surprised by what you didn't realize you were getting, this book is a must have. Be prepared to cry and laugh.
Product Description
The Ultimate Treasure Hunt is about being a Treasure Hunter who does supernatural evangelism through supernatural encounters. A Treasure Hunt is simply asking God to give specific words of knowledge (a Treasure Map) that reveals the divine appointments for the people He has prepared in advance for us to encounter. The Treasure is the lost coin of the parable in Luke 15:8ff. The Treasure Hunter is comparable to Ananias, who had a supernatural vision in which God gave him the details for a supernatural encounter with Saul in Acts 9. This book outlines the underlying biblical principles of supernatural evangelism and witnessing, as well as the practical elements of being an effective Treasure Hunter.
