Book Description
From Antoine Volodine comes a deeply disturbing and darkly hilarious novel whose full meaning, its author asserts, will be found not in the book’s pages but in the dreams people will have after reading it. In Minor Angels Volodine depicts a postcataclysmic world in which the forces of capitalism have begun to reestablish themselves. Sharply opposed to such a trend, a group of crones confined to a nursing home—all of them apparently immortal—resolves to create an avenging grandson fashioned of lint and rags. Though conjured to crush the rebirth of capitalism, the grandson is instead seduced by its charms—only to fall back into the hands of his creators, where he manages to forestall his punishment by reciting one “narract” a day. It is these narracts, or prose poems, that compose the text of Minor Angels.

One of Marvel's last significant hurrahs.......2002-12-27
In the late '90s, Marvel was going down the tubes, both financially and creatively. There was an enormous amount of dreck flooding the shelves, and no matter what schemes they tried, either with product or licensing, they were losing money like crazy. Before declaring bankruptcy, they released two trade paperback collections of their Golden Age material, presenting a selection of the best of that era. While they may not have been well-received by the younger crowd, it was one of the best ideas Marvel had in a while (definitely going against the grain), and it was a treat for fans of comic history. Once again, readers could enjoy the simplistic stories of classic WW-II Marvel characters such as Captain America, Sub-Mariner, the Angel, the Destroyer, Marvel Boy, the Fin, Citizen V, and the Human Torch.
The Golden Age of Marvel Comics, Volumes 1 and 2 can be considered Marvel's equivalent of a public service. It's historical preservation in a market that has a notoriously short attention span. When the majority of fans and retailers were demanding more high-octane heroes showering their foes with bullets, we got two beautiful yet affordable collections of Golden Age greats, showing readers that, while the stories and art of the Golden Age might not have been all that "golden", the characters and their appeal more than made up for it. You can clearly see the elements of these stories that fascinated aspiring writers and artists, leading to their expanding these characters in ways never dreamed of during Marvel's Silver Age and beyond. The covers for both volumes are beautiful: for 1, a battle scene by Ray Lago; for 2, a Kirby/Theakston image. The intros provide some very good historical perspective on the contents.
Marvel is now back on its feet, sort of, but don't expect these books to be reprinted anytime in the near future. The current crowd at Marvel seems to be even more out of touch than the previous one and apparently has no understanding of the treasure it is sitting on.
The Golden Age of Marvel Comics volume 1 is a must read!.......2001-10-18
Released in 1997, The Golden Age of Marvel Comics volume 1 is a collection of early comic book stories from the Golden Age of comic books. Featuring Marvel Comics' Big Three: Captain America, The Sub-Mariner and the original Human Torch, along with stories of other characters like The Vision, The Destroyer, The Angel, and the Black Knight, this is a book that every fan of old comic books will enjoy again and again.
Representing the works of writers and artists of the Golden Age like creators Joe Simon & Jack Kirby, Bill Everett, Carl Burgos, Russ Heath, Stan Lee, John Romita Sr., and others, this book is a great example of the early days of Marvel Comics' history, back then called Timely Comics. It shows how the art form of comic books was done in a time of war and depression. This is a worthwhile read.
This book was followed up with The Golden Age of Marvel Comics volume 2 released in 1999.
The Golden Age of Marvel Comics volume 2 is worth reading!.......2001-10-17
The Golden Age of Marvel Comics volume 2, released in 1999, is a collection of various stories from Marvel Comics' Golden Age era (the first volume of The Golden Age of Marvel Comics was released in 1997). Back then, Marvel Comics was known as Timely Comics, and would later go on to become one of the most successful comic book publishers (alongside longtime competitor, DC Comics).
This book features stories with Marvel's "big three": the original Human Torch, Captain America, and The Sub-Mariner, as well as lesser known, now obscure characters like The Fin, Red Raven, and The Vision (I don't think this is the same one as the android Vision now appearing in Marvel's The Avengers series), as well as a few others. These classics are by the writers and artists of comics' Golden Age: Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Bill Everett, Carl Burgos, and many others, including one story written by Stan Lee. The book also features an introduction by the legendary Mickey Spillane.
Overall, this book makes for an excellent read, especially for people interested in the early years of comic books. Most of the stories are set during World War II, so some people may be offended with the Germans and Japanese as the Nazis villains.
A collection of classic, though heavily reprinted, stories........2000-02-13
I picked this book up at a recent comic convention- I missed it upon initial release in 1997. It's a great compendium of early Timely/Marvel Comics stories (and only one by Stan Lee!), with perhaps half of the stories concentrating on the lesser-known Marvel characters.
The stories themselves aren't bad- they are at least a match for other "Golden Age" comics, and some of the stories are fairly lyrical, such as the reprint of the first Sub-Mariner story in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1.
A large proportion of the stories reprinted concern Captain America, Nazis, or both- the ethnic represntation of the Germans (and occasionally the Japanese) might be highly offensive to people unaware that they are reading uncensored stories published at the height of WWII.
My complaints are: many/most of the stories published in this trade paperback have been heavily reprinted in the past. Anyone with a collection of older Marvel Superheroes or Marvel Tales will already own half of the stories. Also, the printing quality of a couple of stories is akin to reading color photocpies... but for the most part the reprints are clear and clean.
If you're interested in Marvel's past and don't yet own a stack of their reprint comics, then this trade paperback is a good investment.
A must for Golden Age comic book fans!.......1998-05-09
This book is a collection of Golden Age Marvel Comics. These aren't as sophisticated or complicated as today's comics, but these are the stories that started the industry, and well worth reading. This book doesn't just focus on the super-heroes, either. Other genres are represented in its pages. If you want to understand the history of comic books, pick this one up.

I'm always on the lookout for good, what I call "real science fiction" writers and this book has them. I have now ordered most of the books that evolved from the short stories contained in this collection. (I'm a big Asimov fan and like stories that are futuristic but believable.)

This collection contains the following stories: "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card; "Fire Watch" by Connie Willis; "Air Raid" by John Varley; "Lady in the Tower" by Anne McCaffrey; "The Postman" by David Brin; "Blood Music" by Greg Bear; and "Beggars in Spain" by Nancy Kress. Each story also has a short introduction by the author discussing what their inspiration was for the story.

Book Description
Edgar Rice Burroughs was not satisfied with creating characters and events within the world that we know; instead he created whole new worlds for histories, and he filled them with peoples, languages, cities, wars, plants, machines, and monsters that were believable to the reader, yet still alien and fantastic enough to thrill and delight.
From A-Kor, the keeper of the Towers of Jetan in Manator, through Zytheb, one of the priests of Brulor in Ashair, this is a comprehensive reference to the fantastic worlds of Burroughs. Each entry provides a complete definition, along with a reference to the book in which the entry appeared. For terms, the language, either actual (e.g., Latin and French) or Burroughs-created (e.g., The Tongue of the Great Ape or Pal-ul-don), from which it was derived is given.

I had the pleasure of meeting Clark Brady last year and given the previlege of reading the compedium. I was very impressed and jealous (just kidding) as I am an aspiring writer myself and have yet to find my niche. What that we could all have the determination to compile the info required for this work. Hopefully the author will continue and possibly give us new works on such contemporary works as Indiana Jones?

Book Description
This is a sustained argument about the idea of science fiction by a renowned critic. Overturning many received opinions, it is both controversial and stimulating
Much of the controversy arises from Westfahl's resurrection of Hugo Gernsback - for decades a largely derided figure - as the true creator of science fiction. Following an initial demolition of earlier critics, Westfahl argues for Gernsback's importance. His argument is fully documented, showing a much greater familiarity with early American science fiction, particularly magazine fiction, than previous academic critics or historians. After his initial chapters on Gernsback, he examines the way in which the Gernsback tradition was adopted and modified by later magazine editors and early critics. This involves a re-evaluation of the importance of John W. Campbell to the history of science fiction as well as a very interesting critique of Robert Heinlein's Beyond the Horizon, one the seminal texts of American science fiction. In conclusion, Westfahl uses the theories of Gernsback and Campbell to develop a descriptive definition of science fiction and he explores the ramifications of that definition.
The Mechanics of Wonder will arouse debate and force the questioning of presuppositions. No other book so closely examines the origins and development of the idea of science fiction, and it will stand among a small number of crucial texts with which every science fiction scholar or prospective science fiction scholar will have to read.
Customer Reviews:
How a literary subgenre came to be commonly accepted.......2001-04-27
In The Mechanics Of Wonder: The Creation Of The Idea Of Science Fiction, Gary Westfahl presents a sustained and documented argument for the importance of magazine editor Hugo Gernsback as being the true creator of what has become known as the science fiction genre. After initial chapters on Gernsback, Westfahl goes on to examine the way in which the Gernsback tradition was adopted and modified by later magazine editors and early critics., including a re-evaluation of the importance of John W. Campbell to the history of science fiction. The Mechanics Of Wonder will prove of immense interest to scholars of science fiction literary history and scifi enthusiasts with an appreciation of how a literary subgenre came to be a commonly accepted category of American literature and popular culture.

Book Description
Freebooter at heart, spacer by trade, Beka Rosselin-Metadi doesn't want to hear about her father whose rugged generalship held back the Mageworlds--or her highborn mother whose leadership has held the galaxy together ever since. Beka pilots spacecraft--as far from her famous family as possible, thanks very much.
Then Beka's mother is assassinated on the Senate floor, and her father offers her Warhammer, prize ship from his own freebooting youth--if she'll use it to deliver the assassins to him "off the books."
Looking for assassins has a tendency to make assassins look for you. In short order Beka's arranged her own very public death and adopted a new identity; now all she has to do is leave a trail of kidnappings and corpses across five star systems, and blow the roof off the strongest private fortress in the Galaxy. If her own family can just get off her case long enough...!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent SF Fare.......2006-08-14
This book (and entire trilogy) does an excellent job of balancing both the SF science and fantasy aspects, creating a believable universe, with compelling characters and events. I often liken it to Star Wars, but in many ways better. Certainly it's a fun read, engaging, and unexpected twists.
I recommend this one to anyone who enjoys Star Wars and similar types of treats.
The Swashbuckling Domina.......2003-01-10
The Price of the Stars (1992) is the first novel written in the original Mageworlds trilogy. At this time, however, it is the fourth of the series in internal chronological sequence, following The Gathering Flame. In the previous book, Perada Rosselin and Jos Metada headed the resistance movement in the First Mage War and the subsequent establishment of the Republic. Although the Republic won the war, the cost was extremely high; in addition to the military losses, Entibor was rendered uninhabitable by tectonic upheavals, Sapne lost most of its population to plague, and Ilarna was decimated and its Adepts wiped out by invading forces. The Mageworlds also lost heavily, with the Republic destroying its naval forces, exterminating its Mages and dismantling its interstellar mercantile capabilities. Moreover, Arekhon Khreseio sus-Khalgath sus-Peledaen, in his role as Ser Hafrey, was discharged as Armsmaster of the Rosselin family, with Tillijen appointed as his replacement.
Three decades later, Perada is a member of the Grand Council of the Republic and her consort, Jos Metada, is Commanding General of the Republic's Space Force. Ari Rosselin-Metada is a Lieutenant in the RSF Medical Corps at Namport on Nammerin, Owen Rosselin-Metada is an apprentice in the Adept Guild, and Beka Rosselin-Metada is copilot on the armed freighter Claw Hard.
With the help of her brother Owen, Beka had ran away from home to become a commercial star pilot. She is determined that she will never be the Domina of Lost Entibor, but an assassination plot against her mother contravenes her ambitions. At Waycross on Innish-Kyl, she accepts ownership of the Warhammer from her father in order to track down the instigator of the plot. At Embrig Spaceport on Mandeyn, she is saved from an assassination attempt by the Professor, the current persona of Arekhon, who is still protecting the Rosselin family despite his formal dismissal as Armsmaster.
Ari and his friend Nyls Jessan, a fellow medic from Khesat, bring in a farmer who has Rogan's disease, normally a dry world ailment and rather unexpected on the very wet Nammerin. As usual, supply is snafued and cannot provide the required medication, tholovine, in a reasonable time, so Ari and Llannat Hyfid, an Adept and medic, set out to get some through the local Quincunx -- i.e., criminal syndicate -- representative. Unfortunately, this simple task eventually results in a fire, an armed chase, and a deadly duel with a Mage.
Owen has been working for Errec Ransome as a special operative, investigating Mage operations within the Republic, for the last 10 years. His tasks lead him to Pleyver Flatlands, where he crosses paths with Beka and the Professor. They part company and then Beka and the Professor meet Nyls Jessan while being followed and shot at by an estimated 200 armed thugs. The shootouts continue from there on.
This novel initiated the Mageworlds series. It started as a short story that insisted on becoming longer. Now it incorporates 7 novels and still has room for more.
Recommended for anyone who enjoys interstellar action and intrigue on a large scale.
-Arthur W. Jordin
An enjoyable read.......2002-12-03
In the first installment of the Mageworlds, Beka Rosselin-Metadi agrees to captain her father's prized starship Warhammer, and sets off on a mission to find her mother's assassins. What follows is a grand adventure with non-stop action and intrigue.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and very interesting. I especially liked Beka, with her multiple personas and how we begin to understand her feelings about her estranged family. I also liked the mysterious "Professor" who's identity was an enigma until the very end, and Beka's brother Ari, with his unusual background. In fact, all of the characters were likeable, with their own distinct personalities and quirks. I loved how they were thrown together by unusual twists of fate, yet managed to become an effective team.
The action was great. The plot was interesting and original. There was a surprising amount of humor and witty dialogue. And technology didn't overwhelm the storyline (definitely a plus for me). There were a few spots where it slowed down a bit, but then it picked right back up again, and I couldn't stop turning the pages. I will certainly be looking for the next book in the series, Starpilot's Grave, to see what happens next for this unusual group of friends.
An Amazing Journey To Another Universe!!!.......2002-11-24
I have never read another Sci-Fi book that could top this one, and I can't wait to read the sequels, which I have on order. I am a huge fan of Star Wars and I love Sci-Fi, especially a well written space novel, so this is one of my all time favorite books, me being a bookworm and therefore having read a lot of books. One of my favorite aspects of Star Wars has been the Force and Jedi Knights, and although this book has similar things (Adepts and Mages equal Jedi Knights and Dark Jedi, with special staffs and strage powers), these things are original and unique at the same time. Wonderfully real characters with great settings and events written masterfully, equals an unforgettable journey that I recommend to anyone who enjoys a simply great book.
A somewhat meandering plot.......2002-05-29
Space pilot Beka Rosselin-Metadi is drawn into galactic intrigue after her mother, a political leader, is assassinated. For reasons that are not entirely clear, the assassins target Beka and her two brothers, none of whom have any particular political aspirations. That results in the assassins exposing themselves and inviting retaliation.
This novel is described on the cover as "Mageworlds Book One." The story left me with the impression that I had missed a previous novel. The authors keep referring back to some supposed previous actions. Many of the novel's characters seem to be only partially developed.
Overall, it is an average adventure novel. The heroine and her allies skip from planet to planet seeking the villains, leaving a trail of dead bodies behind. It is somewhat a Perils of Pauline type story as Beka escapes from a series of confrontations with her enemies.
