Customer Reviews:
A delightfully warped work of sci-fi.......2003-03-17
"Memoirs of a Space Traveler: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy," by Stanislaw Lem, has been translated into English by Joel Stern and Maria Swiecicka-Ziemianek. The main text is preceded by a publisher's note, which declares that contents of this book (my review refers to the Harvest edition published by Harcourt, Brace & Co.) appeared in the 1971 Polish edition of the book entitled "The Star Diaries," but not in the British and American editions with the same title. Thus this book could be seen as the second volume of Lem's original Polish "Star Diaries." Despite all this, I believe that this book works fine as a stand-alone literary work, so go ahead and ignore the publisher's note if you like.
The book is divided up into several sections, each of which could stand alone as a short story. Each piece is told in the first person by space traveler Ijon Tichy. He discusses his voyages beyond the Solar System and his encounters with an assortment of eccentric scientists on Earth.
"Memoirs" is a delightful, pungent blend of science fiction, philosophy, satire, and horror. Witty and haunting, funny and frightening, it's spiced by clever wordplay.
Lem deals with such topics as artificial intelligence, time travel, environmental exploitation, the nature of the human soul, and the origins of the universe. He describes many whimsical extraterrestrial species, such as the foul-tailed fetido and bottombiter chair ants. Overall, this wacky, surreal book shows Lem to be a soul brother to Edgar Allan Poe, Dr. Seuss, and Kurt Vonnegut.
Target: Ageless questions of humanity... Bullseye!.......2001-11-29
If you have never read a Lem story before, then I highly recommend this novel as a starting point. In this book of short stories, Lem is at at his artful best. Startlingly simple and surprisingly shrewd, the stories expound upon many of the ageless questions which humanity as a whole have attempted to deal with since the beginning of consciousness i.e. genesis of man, existence of spirit/soul, man's primal instinct to destruct etc. In short, this collection of stories serve as a delicious sample of the smorgasboard of creative delights that Lem is known for. His acerbic wit, intellectual prowess, and devastatingly entertaining drollness are all apparent within this collection. A great read written in true Lem "virtuoso" form. Indeed, if one were so inclined, this is the place to start looking for answers to the 'meaning of life'. And even if you do not find the 'ultimate' answer within the pages of this novella/collection of works, at least you can be sure of being entertained!
Should've been combined with the "Diaries".......2001-02-18
For the love of all that is decent, I don't know why "Further Reminiscences" hasn't been combined with "The Star Diaries" to make one handy volume. First of all, thdestinction is essentially artificial - "Further Reminiscences" contains two journeys which were dropped, for one reason or another, from the American edition of the Diaries, a selection of Earthside "reminiscences", a short called "Doctor Diagoras", and the fantastic "Let Us Save the Universe", all of which were present in the original Polish edition. Even the books' sizes favor an omnibus re-issue (250 and 150 pages, respectively).
The two "new" journies found in this book are the eighteenth and the twenty-eighth. The 18th is essentially a shorter, more readable version of the 20th (found in the parent volume), and the classic, oft-reprinted 28th deals with personal freedoms (the Phools and the Master Machine that was created to mediate their conflicts - and thus decides to refabricate them in stone to stop their chaotic quarrels).
The five "further reminiscences" are essentially humorless essays, each dealing with a specific philosophical idea. In each, Tichy comes into contact with some sort of scientific visionary (be it Corcoran, Decantor, Zazul, or Molteris), and, after ascertaining that they aren't insane, listens to their wild stories: Corcoran constructs mechanical brains whose lives and fate are mere recordings in a large steel drum; Decantor wants to immortalize the soul by encasing it in crystal; Zazul tells the gruesome story of his attempt to clone himself; Molteris produces a functional time machine, and, without examining the possible consequences, tests it on himself. It is apparent that these were written at the same time as the journeys, since the 20th has a direct reference to Molteris. "Doctor Diagoras" is not a certified "reminiscence", although it is essentially identical in spirit, the topic of debate being artificial intelligence (the fifth reminiscence is very similar to the 11th journey, only in reverse and with more legal issues).
The volume closes with "Let Us Save the Universe", which is a detailed petition to conserve intergalactic flora and fauna, with several quite hilarious examples of how we foul up the planets, and how some species manage to retaliate.
In a nutshell? A worthwhile read - far from a worthwhile purchase.
memoirs of a space traveler.......2000-04-19
A sequel to The Star Diaries, we visit once again with Ijon Tichy in more amusing (mis?)adventures. Is it as good as the prequel? Unfortunately, no--but it comes mighty close. And where else could you find answers to questions such as: Just who created the universe and why'd they foul it up so miserably? Why haven't they gotten all the bugs out of this time travel business? How come clones are so touchy? What does Doctor Diagoras have in those vats anyway? And, perhaps the Eternal Question we've all asked ouselves at one time or another: How do we know we're all not just brains kept in a box by a mad scientist who's feeding us sensory data of what we believe to be the real world? Hmmm. The words themselves are a sheer pleasure to read.(I'm determined to work "entelechy" sometime into a conversation.) There are puns and other word-plays of the kind only Lem does so easily. Even if you've never read a work by Lem, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one.

Best in a long while.......2001-06-01
A collection of short stories, _Hidden Years_ fills in some missing spots in the storyline, mostly from the time period before the 'Shards'and Kings of the Broken Wheel timeline. It was really nice to see that a story could indeed be covered in the equivalent of one issue of a comic book. My favorites are the story depicted on the cover and the origin story for Skywise. No spoilers here, just go out and get it.
The most spectacular of all Elfquest graphic novels!.......2000-10-16
Wendy is arguably the best comic book artist of our time, and this little gem has got to be her greatest work ever. This is the very first book by the Pinis that I bought. (Which may I recommend that you don't get this first. You will be very confused, even though the stories are great in themselves.) This one book started the Elf-mania in my family. Now, I buy all of them, even the off-the-wall side stories that are more humorous than anything (see "New Blood" and "Worldpool"). It's really great artwork and rich color are the best. And Strongbow is a heartthrob.;)
Perfect 10.......2000-06-01
Wendy Pini has certainly outdone herself! Her artwork has always been versatile, changing to fit the mood of the story. In this graphic novel, she used vivid watercolors to tell the tale. It's amazing! The stories are also superb, in the honored tradition of Elfquest. My favorite story is the one about Tyleet and her adopted human cub, Little Patch. Wendy Pini is definetly my favorite artist! :)
The Pinis are back in a great, flaring nova!.......2000-04-09
In a slightly smaller format than the original paperback volumes, the Elfquest tales that occurred between the great espiodes of the elfin adventures on The World of Two Moons are all presented in full, glaring colors that really blinds your eyes which are more accustomed to the gentler tones of the colorized comic-book collections. Here you meet Strongbow and his wolffriend, Kyavek and her winged boyfriend, Ember and her coming-of-age discoveries, Tyleet and her foster kid, and Skywise and his ill-fated parents. Personally, I feel that the gentle little Tyleet had inherited her mother's child-hunger, so she had a chance to fulfill her aching maternal instincts with an abandoned infant from a nearby human camp. Pretty sappy, in my opinion. But all the Elfquest fans get to unlock even more mysteries about their most favorite elfin characters as well as color-saturated new stories to boot!
An amazing collection of emotional stories about Elfquest!.......1999-06-18
This compelling book contaning 5 of Wendy and Richard Pini's Hidden Years comic books. Which in my opinion are well thought, written, and drawn. These stories can make you cry, and they can help you understand the mysterious world of Elfquest, which few know but love. This must be at the top of every Elfquest lover's list, for it is a very very good book.

A great evaluation of the Black 24th Infantry.......2007-01-10
I am of the age that I knew many of men of the 24th. I have heard them tell how they were singled out and maligned. My brother-in-law died in Korea because of white officers incompetence and white troops buging out. Finaly a good reviw of all of the troups.

Much More Than History.......2002-06-02
Kenner's book is an excellent narrative which chronicles the actual experiences of the buffalo soldiers and the white officers who served with them. The book is a pleasure to read because it goes beyond the dates and battles, opting instead to recreate their foibles and shortcomings as well as their valor and heroism. It takes a true historian to give the rest of us glimpses into such humanity.

Black and white in the 1800's.......2000-03-03
This is an incredible social history placed on the backdrop of the west. When most people think of racial issues in the American west, they think about White settlers vs. Indians on the warpath. Dr. Kenner's book presents a different picture of the West. His book focuses on the world of white calvary officers and their "colored" soldiers. Dr. Kenner talks about issues from the fighting skill of these often forgotten African-American soldiers to interracial dating to homosexuality. This is an incredible story, that no serious historian of the west should ignore.

Time to go outside the Standards........2004-07-06
The Confederation of Worlds enjoyed peace, mostly because it couldn't fight a war even on a bet. People were trained from birth, educated to think only in a certain way, to stay within the box. But many within the Confederation understand that this could be a weakness. So they decide to apply their knowledge of personnel selection technology and their planet-wide database of psysh profiles to pick the greatest warriors from their own populace. They also hire the best mercenaries in the galaxy to train them. The coal-black veterans of Tyss will help to create the first White Regiment.
And just in time. For the Karghanik Empire has just entered Confederation space.

Book Description
This small book contains the names of more than a thousand black soldiers who did not serve in the USCT (United States Colored Troops) during the Civil War. Rather, they served in white regiments, mainly as cooks. However, they were not mere hired "contrabands," the name by which General Benjamin Butler called runaway slaves who fled to the Yankees penetrating the South. They were bona fide soldiers, as their discharge and pension papers substantiate. The primary purpose for this book is to reveal to many the existence of black men who have been forgotten by historians. If mention is made at all in history books of the black soldiers who had served during the Civil War, the reference is only for those having served in the USCT. Following the war, the black men in white regiments were mustered out of the Union Army with their company and then went on their way. Most were illiterate; therefore, no journals, diaries, or letters had been written to preserve their place in history. In fact, many ex-slaves just wanted to forget their former lives completely as did the great-grandfather of the author, Juanita Patience Moss. Therefore, their stories were lost. In 1998, she was shocked to discover that her great-grandfather's name was not to be engraved on the stainless steel plates surrounding the monument in Washington, D.C., created to honor the black soldiers who had served during the Civil War. His name is not there because he served in a white regiment, and not in the USCT. Shocked after being told by several historians that there had been no black soldiers in white regiments when she knew of at least one, the author was determined to find out if there had been more. The military records of her great grandfather, Crowder Pacien, indicate that he had enlisted at Plymouth, N.C., on January 1, 1864. So she began there, discovering that prior to the Confederate victory at the Battle of Plymouth on April 20, 1864, ten "Col'd" cooks were recorded on muster rolls of several Union regiments garrisoned there. "The Forgotten Black Soldier" contains only an introductory list, for there are more names yet to be uncovered. Although the total may not be large, still it is of black men who also were willing to risk their lives for freedom. Their story must be told, too, even one hundred thirty nine years later.

Book Description.......2001-02-07
The 2nd United States Sharpshooter Regiment was one of the elite units of the Army of the Potomac. Composed of expert marksmen, this regiment served throughout the war, distinguishing itself on every battlefield on which it fought. Wyman White joined a New Hampshire company of the 2nd U.S.S.S. in November 1861. He served in every battle in which the regiment was engaged with the exceptions of South Mountain and Antietam. These memoirs, written after the war, provide a vivid picture of army life and battle action. His recall of detail suggests that these reminiscences were based on diaries he kept throughout the war. Wyman White's manuscripts is loaded with personal insights, humor, and superb detail of events, personalities, equipage, uniforms, and soldier life. The feisty White provides an important look at the 2nd regiment of U.S.S.S.--most other accounts of sharpshooters were by members of the 1st U.S.S.S. Virtually all aspects of soldier life are covered, from snowball battles to burials. This book is sure to become one of the most important sources not only on Berdan's Sharpshooters but also on the Army of the Potomac.
A candid view of a Civil War soldier's life........1998-11-10
Wyman White, a sergeant in the second regiment of Colonel Hiram Berdan's elite United States Sharpshooters, has left behind an invaluable source for anyone wishing to know more about what a Union soldier's life was like in the Civil War. At the same time, this book also contains very detailed descriptions of the tactics used by the U.S. Sharpshooter regiments in the many engagements they fought in the Eastern Theater of the war.
In this book, the reader will find the harsh realities of war frankly depicted, as well as many of the lighter and more humorous incidents which make up the life of a soldier on the front lines.
If you are a student of the Civil War, of the military, or of the ways people cope with adversity, then you will doubtless find this book fascinating. Wyman White was clearly a careful diarist, and Mr. Russell White has done a superb job of organizing the original material into a readable format, with additional materials at the back of the book that any Civil War scholar can use to direct his or her researches. If you are interested in the campaigns of one of the elite units of the Civil War, then this book is definitely for you.

Excellent regimental review.......1999-06-28
Ten years of research by the author is a fair guide to the amount of information contained in this book. The 31st Georgia, part of "Stonewall" Jackson's legendary foot cavalry saw action in almost every major battle in the eastern theatre. Mr White's research covers not just the battles, and the commanders of the 31st (most notably John Gordon) but also many personal details of the humble private. A fitting finale is a comprehensive roster of the regiment with as many details of each member as the author has been able to find - including in many places the date of death for those that survived. I really enjoyed all of this book - the author's research has led to a fine regimental history.

Suzanne Goins is the chef-owner of Lucques, an acclaimed Los Angeles restaurant noted for its Sunday meal service. Sunday Suppers at Luques presents 132 recipes from the restaurant, arranged by seasonal menus and thus by market availability, with the likes of Hawaiian Snapper with Green Rice and Cucumbers in Crème Fraîche; Saffron Chicken with Parmesan Pudding, Spring Onions and Sugar Snap Peas; Bistecca California with Peperonata, Baked Ricotta, and Lemon; and Young Onion Tart with Cantal, Applewood-Somked Bacon, and Herb Salad. Home cooks should find these deft, light-handed creations immediately attractive, if not always readily reproducible, as many call for special ingredients like the aforementioned snapper, Kaboca squash, and roncal, a Spanish sheep's milk cheese, among many others. Reasonable alternatives aren't always suggested. Though the dishes themselves aren't difficult to make, reproducing whole menus, or even multiple dishes within them, will require a kitchen workout.
These things said, many cooks will want to try making the more approachable dishes apart from their "trimmings," not to mention such desserts as Warm Crèpes with Lemon Zest and Hazelnut Brown Butter, and Jessica's Favorite Meyer Lemon Tart with a Layer of Chocolate. With color photos, the book is also lovely to pore through. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Few chefs in America have won more acclaim than Suzanne Goin, owner of Lucques restaurant. A chef of impeccable pedigree, she got her start cooking at some of the best restaurants in the world–L’Arpège. Olives, and Chez Panisse, to name a few–places where she acquired top-notch skills to match her already flawless culinary instincts. “A great many cooks have come through the kitchen at Chez Panisse,” observes the legendary Alice Waters, “But Suzanne Goin was a stand-out. We all knew immediately that one day she would have a restaurant of her own, and that other cooks would be coming to her for kitchen wisdom and a warm welcome.”
And come they have, in droves. Since opening her L.A. restaurant, Lucques, in 1998, Goin’s cooking has garnered extraordinary accolades. Lucques is now recognized as one of the best restaurants in the country, and she is widely acknowledged as one of the most talented chefs around. Goin’s gospel is her commitment to the freshest ingredients available; her way of combining those ingredients in novel but impeccably appropriate ways continues to awe those who dine at her restaurant.
Her Sunday Supper menus at Lucques–ever changing and always tied to the produce of the season–have drawn raves from all quarters: critics, fellow chefs, and Lucques’s devoted clientele. Now, in her long-awaited cookbook, Sunday Suppers at Lucques, Goin offers the general public, for the first time, the menus that have made her famous.
This inspired cookbook contains:
§132 recipes in all, arranged into four-course menus and organized by season. Each recipes contains detailed instructions that distill the creation of these elegant and classy dishes down to easy-to-follow steps. Recipes include: Braised Beef Shortribs with Potato Puree and Horseradish Cream; Cranberry Walnut Clafoutis; Warm Crepes with Lemon Zest and Hazelnut Brown Butter
§75 full-color photographs that illustrate not only the beauty of the food but the graceful plating techniques that Suzanne Goin is known for
§A wealth of information on seasonal produce–everything from reading a ripe squash to making the most of its flavors. She even tells us where to purchase the best fruit, vegetables, and pantry items
§Detailed instruction on standard cooking techniques both simple and involved, from making breadcrumbs to grilling duck
§A foreword by Alice Waters, owner and head chef of Chez Panisse restaurant and mentor to Suzanne Goin (one-time Chez Panisse line cook)
With this book, Goin gives readers a sublime collection of destined-to-be-classic recipes. More than that, however, she offers advice on how home cooks can truly enjoy the process of cooking and make that process their own. One Sunday with Suzanne Goin is guaranteed to change your approach to cooking–not to mention transform your results in the kitchen.

My favorite cookbook..........2007-07-20
I am an avid reader of cookbooks having collected and read many. This is one that I always come back to. Lucques is one of my favorite restaurants in L.A. and we always take out-of-town guests there - and then tell them about this cookbook!
One thing - as other reviewers have pointed out - access to a good farmer's market makes all the difference. it's tough to do a lot of these recipes correctly without all the proper ingredients. The Meyer lemon tort (with or without the chocolate) is fairly easy and the flavor is just fabulous!
I love this cookbook..........2007-05-06
I've had this beside my bed for a month so that I can read through each and every recipe. I love how she used seasonal items and splits the book into Seasons instead of Appetizer, Entree, etc. Great recipes. I totally recommend this cookbook.
Good addition ot your cookbook collection........2007-03-30
This is a lovely book. I am quite comfortable in the kitchen and more often that not, consult recipes for flavor ideas and use them as templates but there is something about the carefully crafted recipes of Suzanne Goin that leads me to prepare them almost exactly as written. Furthermore, every recipe I have made has been superb and does not need and tweaking. Yes, the recipes aren't fast but I disagree with the reviewers who say they are difficult. Her recipes reward the patient chef but she also has some that can be made quickly. Her dressings are particularly great.
Very good but watch the ingrediant lists.......2007-01-20
Susan goin is a great chef with a great natural style of cooking that highlights the superior ingediants that she uses. If you don't have those ingrediants handy in your market she urges you to not get hung up on that. If your an advanced cook and can punt this is a great book you will enjoy; if you are not an accomplished cook and live in an area of the country which does not have artisen farmers this book may not be for you.
The recipes are set up for six portions which is fantastic as it is a dinner party book. She wrote this to encourage us to have a full table and to break bread and share your table with family and friends which really should be a habit and I applaud her. It is a beautiful book with a heartfelt introduction and sentimental rememberances by Ms . Goin which will make you long for all the meals you missed at the family table. A great effort and a nice addition to your shelf.
Hard work with a payoff.......2006-10-17
I bought this book after examining its beautiful pages various times at the bookstore. Last night I cooked from it for the first time. It was a lot of effort, but it did pay off. Last night I made the Deviled Chicken Thighs. My work began Sunday with four trips to different stores to assemble the various necessary ingredients. Yep, two supermarkets, the liquor store, and a bodega (I live in Jersey City, just outside Manhattan). Then the next day was the cooking. Altogether it took me about four hours for that part of the task. Honestly, halfway through I seriously considered giving up. But I persevered, the author's directions are very precise and very clear, so I just concentrated on completing each step. When I was done, my kitchen smelled wonderful (between peals of the smoke alarm set off by the cooking of chicken in oil) and I had a beautiful and delicious meal to serve. So, my thoughts are this . . . don't pick this book if you expect a quick and easy meal to toss onto the table. This is serious cooking and it takes a lot of work and dedication to get through it. But, wow, when you are done, you feel like you've climbed a mountain, and you have this wonderful meal to show for your efforts. Also--now that I have been through the entire recipe, I bet I can do it again, with much less effort and pull it off again more easily. Meaning -- I learned some things about cooking while working my way through it. Not something you can say about a lot of cookbooks. I'm going to put this book aside for a month or so, and then carefully pick a recipe and do it all again. I recommend this book heartily to someone who is interested in cooking and most of all LEARNING.
