    Book Description

This entertaining and thoughtful personal investigation examines the boom in Australian expatriatism—the ideals, reality, and dislocation of being an Australian living abroad—and the often heart-wrenching decision to return home. Exploring the glamour and the lure of the bewitching big city and the pain of nostalgia, this chronicle analyzes the reasons almost one million compatriots have uprooted their lives, families, and careers to join the global community.

IN THE year 1799, Captain Amasa Delano, of Duxbury, in Massachusetts, commanding a large sealer and general trader, lay at anchor, with a valuable cargo, in the harbour of St. Maria- a small, desert, uninhabited island towards the southern extremity of the long coast of Chili. There he had touched for water... Please Note: This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. My son is 9 years old, reading at a 4th grade level. I bought this book for him and he was completely enthralled! It was pretty spooky but not too scary, and he really liked that feeling. Every night at dinner he would tell us what was happening in the book. It was just the right reading level, with some new vocabulary words that he has now mastered. Great job! I will look for other books by this author.

                      3 out of 5 stars Better .........2005-07-14

.. than the woods out back. More thought went into the plot. Less unbelievable fight scenes, and I think I am starting to understand RAS's audience.

I guess that I do not fit the profile that he is writing for, because after reading one and a half novels in the series, it was clearly explained that the spear is talking to Gary telepathically. So why does the author feel the need to explain that other characters cannot hear what the spear is saying?

Waste of space as far as I was concerned, but maybe if you are 12 yeas old you need the concept of telepathy explained more than once. Or maybe if you are senile you have forgotten.

Still an improvement .. thankyou for not transporting the girlfriend.

5 out of 5 stars Salvatore continues the Gary Leger saga.......2004-11-15

                      R. A. Salvatore continues the tale of Gary Leger by once again yanking him from his world and putting him on another trail to adventure. Gary's life has improved since we've last seen him. He has a better car, a better job, and a girlfriend, Diane. But even with life on the upswing for him, he's still stuck in the corporate rat race.

When Gary last saw the world of Faerie, the witch had been defeated, Robert the Dragon had re-forged the spear, and all was right with the world. But not for long. Robert has left his hole and is now wreaking havoc on the world.

So Gary, Kelsey, Geno, Mickey, and Gerbil the Gnome (a new character) all set out to defeat Robert. Along the way we see how much Gary has grown emotionally and physically.

Salvatore has done a wonderful job in bringing another Gary Leger story to print. If you have read any of his works, this series is the best. Start with The Woods Out Back, continue with this novel, then finish with The Dragonslayer's Return. You won't be disappointed.

                      3 out of 5 stars Some of Salvatore's Best Work. . ........2003-04-22

"The Dragon's Dagger" continues Drizzt Do'Urden creator R.A. Salvatore's fantasy saga began in "The Woods Out Back." Like the previous novel, it is clearly a labor of love for its creator, as the main character, Gary, is named after none other than Salvatore's brother, while Gary's wife, Diane, is named after the author's own wife, and so on and so forth. Given Salvatore's connection to this tale, it's certainly difficult not to find the work a little endearing, but at the same time it lacks the punch and pacing of his far superior Drizzt Do'Urden stories (the early ones, and not some of his dawdling later efforts).

The premise is certainly a good one, and carries on that which began in the previous tome. Gary Leger, resident of the mundane Real-earth (or our world) is summoned to return to the magical realm of Faerie (think Middle-earth but less compelling) to slay Robert the Wretched, an evil dragon wreaking havoc in the land. Salvatore keeps things colorful and generally amusing in a somewhat light-hearted fashion, but manages to keep a whole lot from happening during the course of the novel. It has always seemed that all three books in the Spearweilder series could have been condensed into one excellent read, but were instead expanded into a trilogy, very much at the cost of pace.

Again Salvatore's tone is also a little unnerving. One moment Gary is lamenting killing his first human being, while the next he feels like he's taking a vacation from the grim realities of Real-earth. To top of it off, Gary's slaying of this human foe, and his guilt, play no real role in the events of the story, and make one wonder why they were ever included in the first place, since it seems so out of touch with the rest of the novel's good cheer. Salvatore also makes the mistake of becoming a little heavy-handed at times when he expresses his own viewpoints through the main character. It's a little preachy, to be sure.

In the end, though, "The Dragon's Dagger" is a lightweight read (only 300 or so pages) full of interesting characters and a decent helping of adventure that, like its predecessor, is worth checking out.

                      4 out of 5 stars Pure Fun.......2002-05-02

I would like to start by saying that Salvatore is a genius. With this trilogy, he not only keeps your interest, but gives you a genuine feeling of really being in the Land of Faerie. He brings in someone from our time and place, puts them in faerie, and then the true magic begins. The Dragon's Dagger is a wonderful story of honor, excitement, and brilliant battle scenes along with some good wit and humor. It's funny, yet it keeps you holding your breath. Definately a can't-put-it-down book.

                      4 out of 5 stars The Dragon's Dagger (2000).......2000-03-01

Back in the day (1994), this was the first novel I read after The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Even for the VERY best contemporary author that's one helluva tough act to follow (impossible to top or even break even with). Take that and the fact that I obliviously started in the middle of the trilogy, and you would think I would have several complaints. I find it hard to come up with any, however. Aside from The Dark Elf series, this is book 2 in Salvatore's best series. Forget about those Demonwars and that Crimson Shadow (both series are highly trite and uninteresting). Pick this up instead - but DO start with The Woods Out Back and avoid those initial hints of confusion I suffered.

I think one of the reasons this series makes it where so many other Salvatore ventures have failed is because he embraces its wackiness and all its cliches (like Elven archers and Dwarven craftsmen, gentle Giants and wicked witches), and he does so in a comic yet adventurous fashion. I also liked the references to Tolkien which seem a respectable homage to the man who started it all and made this novel possible. Good work, Salvatore. Now if only all your other stuff could be like this and those Drizzt books...

4 out of 5 stars Revelations on the Realms.......2001-05-13

This book proves to be excellent source material for many of the power groups of TSR/Wizard's Forgotten Realms campaign world. In fact,if the upcoming 3rd edition sourcebook proves anywhere near as insightful, it should enhance the Realms' potential as a complete and true alternative to the current "Greyhawk-centric" layout of most the 3E materials currently being published. The book proves to be insightful, especially for DMs who run a Realms campaign, and it will spoil some storyline if you are more of a player than the game referee. Despite high praise, there are some aspects that may not please all fans. But first, let me state the excellent parts. What this entails is the efforts to develop details and story growth for some the Realms most famous and infamous groups. This material should prove good to developing and expanding a FR game adventure with new plotlines and activities. For several factors, this is important for game play and development. First, in recent years we have seen the campaign world material focus on geography and history, while casually or only briefly discussing many of these groups within. This left many a GM in the lurch, forced to come up with solutions that may not have been detailed or ideal for their campaign. By adding more details, and often a framework of villains, the book improves the group structure for adventures and encounters. Groups like the Rundeen and The Iron Throne(now of Baldur's Gate computer game fame)are given a deeper explanation and motivation than slavers or evil merchants, explanations that were casually tossed in to add flavor. Second, it adds much needed storyline to more familiar groups in FR adventures, like the Zhentarim and the Harpers. While I don't agree with all the new plots, these more-familiar and popular organizations were in need of an infusion of new dynamics, either to make them more realistic villains to fight or more interesting as heroic allies. Those players who have been involved as Harpers should be thrilled at the new adventures, while foes of the Zhents will find them more powerful and crafty to deal with than previous material had conveyed. The other added plus is that the more generic or marginal organizations mentioned in novels or modules have gotten some detail as well. Here, the book shines by giving attention that fleshes them out moreso than before. The Shadow Theives, The Westlake criminal society(plus city layout); The Unseen, and even a secret society of evil elves(if you read the Dungeon Crawl modules, you know where this going) all come into focus more. This information provides many a gamemaster with an alternate source of material than just encounters with the more famous groups(i.e. Harpers, etc) of the Realms, especially if your players have grown bored of them. While all this makes for great source material to GMs, and plot stories to fans of the Realms, the book isn't without some flaws. Let's start with the fact that you really must be versed in the Forgotten Realms; this isn't material that translates well into a generic campaign. Without trying to say too much, the plots involving Manshoon and the Zhentarim are very complex and could create confusion if you aren't familiar with the villains' histories and details. While some explanations are added for help, there is an intention to leave enough left unanswered to further future gaming. However, this convultion isn't always helpful to game structure and some may find it be too much. In fact, some may find that the storylines are too much change to add to a campaign involing those groups. Also, the excellent detailing found in this book is not evenly distributed. Some groups have more material, perhaps too much that can bog down your interest, and others very basic information or blurbs. For example, the Men of Bailisk or the Cloak Societies are briefly mentioned, and associated with other entries, usually a broad one like the Zhentarim or the Knights of the Shield. This doesn't really add to the possible areas of devlopment for adventures the DM could flesh out. To sum it up, CLOAK & DAGGER does a great job developing and revealing the power groups of the Forgotten Realms. The materials sticks close to its source, developing the mystery, manipulation and detailed intrigue lots of gamers associate with this game world's high adventure. Some, however, may find the changes too confusing to use in their gaming campaigns without careful application. You'll find it good and creative, but not as complete as one would like in some parts.

5 out of 5 stars In the shadows they lurk.......2000-06-02

After months of anticipation, "Cloak & Dagger" has arrived. This work reveals, for the DM of course, some startling events in the lands of Faerun. This source book is filled with a myriad of realms lore and information, as well as hooks for bringing these nefarious organizations to play in your realms campaign. For many of us, this is what we've been waiting for, and calling to the powers-that-be about. Finally, these intrigue riddled organizations are made flesh for the cunning game master: The Shadow Thieves, The Knghts of the Shield, The Iron Throne, and the Night Masks to name only a few. But more importantly, it reveals a great shift in the balance. What is it? I won't ruin it, but I'll tell you it has to do with the Zhentarim, and Manshoon himself! If you're a Forgotten Realms DM, and you want to spice up the intrigue in your campaign, even if you don't like using power groups in your games, you owe it to yourself to pick this up. You will not be sorry!

4 out of 5 stars Early books are the best in Gor Series.......2003-07-17

I read the Gor series as a boy in the 70's and early 80's. IMHO the series is most appealing to teenage boys. I recently pulled ýAssassins of Gorý off the shelf one night while bored, and re-read it. I was shocked that there was no real sex, and only a handful of pages of philosophy and psychology that I had to skip over. The book was really excellent, although in a straight forward, uncomplicated sort of way. These are escapist novels, richly detailed, which immerse you in an exotic world, not real thinkers. My enduring memories were of the later books in the series, which were almost unreadable because whole chapters were devoted to philosophy and psychology.

I am not offended by the idea that it is natural and enjoyable for women to be submissive to men. Although I recognize it as wish fulfillment fantasy, still I consider it harmless, especially in such an obviously fictitious setting. I even found it mildly interesting the first time it was mentioned. It is the umpteenth repetition that I find boring. I just turn those pages, skipping ahead to the next action sequence. Speaking of wish fulfillment, I wish someone would edit the series, and re-publish it without these parts. Maybe Eric Flint could do it? He likes to edit, according to his afterword to ý1633ý and heýs good at it. Of course, if you take the sex out of Gor you get Barsoom, and that story has already been written.

I looked on Amazon to see if there was anything new going on with the series, and there was. It is being reprinted, starting at the beginning, and at least 2 new books seem to be published, or at least in the works. I was disappointed though that Amazon didnýt have the whole series listed under one easy to find heading. I guess there are, after all, millions of books and only so many Amazon employees. So Iým listing the series, in order, along with some brief info. Some of these books I havenýt read, as noted.

1.) Tarnsman of Gor - 1966. Earthman, Tarl Cabot, goes to another planet, hidden on the opposite side of our sun, and becomes a master swordsman and Warrior. This is the book that is most like ýPrincess of Marsý by Edgar Rice Burroughs, which I highly recommend. Note - in my copy, a 1975 reprint, the 1966 copyright is held by John Lange. Makes me wonder if Norman isnýt a pen name.

2.) Outlawý - 1967. Tarl Cabot returns to Gor, to find heýs been outlawed.

3.) Priest-Kingsý - 1968. Tarl Cabot goes to lair of Priest-Kings to clear his name.

4.) Nomadsý - 1969. Tarl Cabot goes to Southern Plains, and meets Mongol type nomads.

5.) Assassiný - 1970. Tarl Cabot returns to Ar, greatest city-state on Gor. Note - this is the first copy I have by Del Rey books, and it has cover art by Boris. I may not like reading about the Gorean philosophy on sexual roles for men and women, but I canýt get enough of Borisý artwork depicting it.

6.) Raidersý - 1971. Tarl Cabot goes to Port Kar, pirate capitol of scum and villainy, and learns the meaning of shame. More Boris art on the cover of the Del Rey edition.

7.) Captiveý - 1972. A new character, Elinor Brinton, is captured on Earth and becomes a slave girl on Gor. The first time this is done, it may be slightly creative and a little interesting, but it is a radical departure from the earlier books and I consider it to be the beginning of the end. At least Tarl Cabot has a few pages at the end, which sort of tie this book into the rest of the series. This is also the last book published by Ballantine books, which I think is significant in the content and direction of the rest of the series.

8.) Huntersý - 1974. Tarl Cabot goes to the Northern Forest and meets amazon type women. This seems to be the first time there was a break in John Normanýs writing, undoubtedly related to his switch to Daw books as a publisher.

9.) Maraudersý - 1975. Tarl Cabot goes to the land of the Norsemen and meets Viking type Marauders.

10.) Tribesmený - 1976. Tarl Cabot goes to the Tahari desert.

11.) Slave Girlý - 1977. Earth girl Judy Thornton enslaved on Gor. Again. No Tarl Cabot at all.

12.) Beastsý - 1978. Tarl Cabot goes to the Arctic ice pack and meets Eskimo type people.

13.) Explorersý - 1979. Tarl Cabot goes to the equatorial rain forests.

14.) Fighting Slaveý - 1980. Earthman John Marshall is enslaved and forced to fight in a pit on Gor.

15.) Rogueý - 1981. John Marshall wanders free on Gor.

                                    16.) Guardsmaný - 1981. John Marshall earns a homeland.

17.) Savagesý - 1982. Tarl Cabot goes to the great plains and meets American Indian type savages. Note - If you like this, John Norman also wrote ýGhost Danceý in 1970, a similar type story about real American Indians. Iým impressed that he kept the writing schedule he did on the Gor novels, and still wrote other books on the side. He also wrote ýTime Slaveý in 1975.

18.) Blood Brothersý - unread. Savages and Blood Brothers are a two-part set. I read Savages and was bored when it just petered out at the end with no dramatic climax. So I didnýt buy Blood Brothers. Now I hear that this book has all that and more, oh well.

19.) Kajiraý - unread. Another Slave girl story.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best gor books.......2003-01-27

I have read all the Gor books. But this was the first I ever did read so prehaps I view it through rose tinted glasses.
It really is one of the best.
Tarl travels north to a Viking type country and we finally see open battle with the ferocious Kurii.
If you have not read Norman before you will be suprised. His descriptive style of writing is like no other author I have ever seen. Meticulous descriptions of weapons, objects, places, set pieces, give Gor a flavour unlike any other land.
And now onto the controversy. It is all about the ultimate in co-dependant roles with males being the domintator and females the submissive partner.
Now I can understand the viewpoint but we dont need to hear it over and over again. Just do what I do, and skip over these pages. Thankfully you will not have to do it that much in this book, unlike say the last few in the series where over half of the text is taken up with it.
Despite that quibble get this book now.

4 out of 5 stars For my money the last really good Gor novel from John Norman.......2002-12-15

"Marauders of Gor," the 9th volume in John Norman's Chronicles of Counter-Earth, was the last of the Gor novels that I really enjoyed. One of the Others comes from the north bearing a token of the death of Talena, Cabot's one-time free companion. Cabot heads north, as much out of a sense of vengeance than to continue in the service of the Priest-Kings, from whose cruel control he has been trying to free himself. In many ways the book is quite reminiscent of the most popular novel in the series, "Nomads of Gor," with Tarl Cabot finding comradeship with the barbaric transplanted Norseman of the north. The parallels are clearly the same, with Cabot having to gain acceptance with a group of fierce warriors who do not trust outsiders, helping his new friends with their endeavors, and having them help him with his own in return. The character of Ivar Forkbeard is more boisterous version of Kamchak the Tuchuk, and my favorite sequence in the novel is when Forkbeard comes up with a way of defying his liege lord for an unfortunately slight. The book also offers a pitched battle between the Kurii, as the Others call themselves, and the warriors of Torvaldsland. Of course, it would not be a Gor novel without a couple of choice examples of women being taught by a strong master than only by accepting total dominance can they achieve true happiness, but at least in "Marauders of Gor" the focus is still more on the conflict between the Priest-Kings and the Others rather than on the Gorean philosophy, which pretty much dominates the rest of the series. The idea of transplanted Norseman also finds Norman borrowing another Edgar Rice Burroughs tradition of "lost" civilizations, as we shall see with in future novels with transplanted Native American tribes and the like. After the relative disappointment of the previous two Gor novels, "Marauders" almost gets the series back on track for those of us who enjoyed the adventure and political intrigue more than the sexual conquests, but Norman quickly abandons not only that focus but Tarl Cabot as a central character in the novels that followed this 1975 effort.

3 out of 5 stars Back on track?.......2000-12-24

I had heard that Norman got back on track in terms of action-adventure in Marauders of Gor, his take on Viking life a la Gor. (Can you imagine Vikings that are chess fanatics? Sorry, it just doesn't fit the image!) Unfortunately, it is only partially true. The first half of the book establishes the character of Ivar Forkbeard, a typical John Norman-style roguish hero, and life in Torvaldsland to which Tarl Cabot is drawn by the abduction and possible murder of his runaway slave Telima by the Kurii, the alien race opposed to the Priest-Kings. This part of the book contains the usual Gorean hijinks such as the abduction of Hilda the Haughty of Scagnar but is marred by Norman's obsession with the domination of females. The level of cruelty towards woman in these books is becoming increasingly disturbing. But in the second half the Kurii show up and from this point on Norman is indeed back on track. It then rivals the first 6 volumes as fun reading. If the first half had been as good as the second half, I would have given it another star.

5 out of 5 stars I have enjoy the gor books very much........1999-09-19

I have all the Gor books from one to seventeen and I would like to get the rest of them but I can't find them. I have read my gor books five times so far.

I first stumbled across this book at the library in the school where i work. As a first generation Chinese born in US, i was naturally curious about my heritage and why my family practiced certain traditions and what they all meant. This book answered many of the questions i had about our traditions and more. Not only does this book introduce all the "general" holidays and traditions of Chinese people, but it also explains the why and how to. Since our families are more assimilated into american culture, i wanted to know more about the practices so i could share them with my children. Also, there are differences in holidays and traditions by regions (northern, souther, etc.) across China, so this book has that disclaimer where it states how things are generally done and that there may be exceptions. Overall, after reading this book, i feel much more knowledgeable about what's appropriate and what's not during what occassion. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to learn more about Chinese culture and traditions.

3 out of 5 stars Fine not great.......2007-02-18

The book did answer a few questions for me, but was not exactly what I was looking for. It was weighed much more heavily towards explaining holidays and celebrations rather than culture, which was what I was more interested in reading about. Will keep looking....

                                                    5 out of 5 stars Basic Introduction.......2007-02-09

Great book that gives a basic overview of Chinese traditions. If you want to know more details,(such as the myths and Gods that relate to every event) there are other books. It is written in an easy format, very assessible to people who are not Chinese. I give it 5 stars for what it is-- an introductory-style book on Chinese traditions.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Chinese holidays.......2006-12-25

This book is a great basic introduction to Chinese holidays. I was interested in learning more about Chinese holidays and what exactly they were about. I like how the book provides the background to the actual holiday and then goes into specifics about what Chinese people actually do during these holidays. The specifics include recipes and other activities. Overall the book is a fun read and makes for a great future reference.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for chinese culture and celbrations.......2006-03-11

this is an excellent book in explaining whys, whats and hows in chinese cultural events. being 1/2 euro caucasian and 1/2 chinese and growing up with grandmother and father from china, i was always curious to why we did certain things and the reason why things are a certain way. this book explains all in detail and it also has EXCELLENT RECIPES for certain all time favorite dishes...this book made everything i grew up with become clear.
this is a keeper on the self for future reference and to share with other family members and friends.
