Book Description
Gavin Stevens, the wise student of crime and folkways of Mississippi's Yoknapatawpha county, plays the major role in these six stories of violence.
Customer Reviews:
Knight's Gambit.......2007-07-15
These short stories were nice for reading when I didn't have time to sit down and read an entire book. All of them gave insight to the times and thoughts of the South in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
William Faulkner's Best Ever.......2005-10-23
I have long been a fan of William Faulkner and have read everything he wrote, but in my opinion, this collection of short stories is him at his very best. The story "Tomorrow" alone is worth the price of the book and more. You feel every emotion of the characters in it. However, this is true of most of Faulkner's works. If you saw the movie and liked it, you will love the story. The movie falls far short of the story.

Southern Mystery and more.......2004-04-11
These are stories about Gavin Stevens, county attorney or Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. Some are well written crime mysteries, while other's look at a more general human mystery. "Smoke" has Stevens employing a theatrical device as clever as Sherlock Holmes (in Scandal in Bohemia) to illicit an end to the mystery. Monk contains deductions about the "moron" Monk, and what he could or could not do. The characterizations of the minor characters are all well done.
The stories "Tomorrow" and "Knights Gambit" go beyond conventional crime detection. Knights Gambit, the longest piece, unfolds around a chessboard, and is more complicated. With Faulkner's elaborate sentence structure, I had trouble following some of this story.. perhaps a little too mysterious.
Modernist Murders.......2002-09-07
Readers familiar with William Faulkner - and those who are not averse to unconventional sentences - will enjoy this collection of detective stories featuring Gavin Stevens as county attorney in small town Mississippi, and his young nephew Charles as assistant. Stevens, an intriguing character who translates the Bible into Greek and plays chess with his nephew, is an interesting mix of the traditional European detective and a southern gentleman who can communicate and empathize with the local townspeople.
As well as crime solving, these stories also offer a unique and vivid portrait of the South of the forties that Faulkner captures through his characteristically tactile and vernacular use of language and shifting narrative perspective. The impoverished farmers that persist, ageless and enduring, the occasional urban outsider or foreigner, and the rich landowner of mysterious circumstances, are some of the characters that populate these stories. Tradition, inheritance, and the looming presence of war shape Faulkner's candid and non-sensational rendering of this microcosm and his tacit exploration of time and mortality.
An enjoyable minor work.......2000-07-14
Despite the fact that I have a degree in literature, I've never been a Faulkner worshiper. His technique, while admittedly masterful, is something I often find to be self-conscious and distracting. That said, Knight's Gambit is my favorite Faulkner book because it is not typical Faulkner; only the title story, which ends the book, has those recognizable long-winded sentences and that rambling style. No one will mistake this for one of his major works, and as mysteries these stories really don't work very well, but what these stories DO have is atmosphere and good characterization. Gavin Stevens, an almost unbelievable reservoir of wisdom and good ol' common sense, is in each of these stories our guide into a treacherous, hardscrabble and sometimes brutal world that, if you have ever spent any time in the rural South, you will recognize immediately. The mysteries themselves, as I said, are not very impressive, but the characters and situations are all well-observed and guaranteed to lodge in the brain after you've finished reading the book. Flawed but memorable, and highly recommended for those who are either weary of Faulkner or would like to read some of his lesser-known but worthwhile work.

Book Description
The second book in Ed Greenwood's first Forgotten Realms trilogy.
Author Ed Greenwood continued the story of Shandril of Highmoon in this second volume of the Shandril's Saga trilogy. This mass market edition of the trade paperback features new cover art by John Sullivan.
Customer Reviews:
A good 2nd book in a great trilogy........2007-07-03
Ed Greenwood has a style of writing that I just like to read; and he created the Forgotten Realms! The man needs to be inducted into the Fantasy Authors Hall of Fame just for that one act alone.
This book picks up where the first book left off and continues the story of Shandril. It's pretty good writing, and Ed Greenwood writes about the swords and sorcery things I like to read about. I don't know how many other books, and movies for that matter, that over the years have fallen short just because they don't have enough magic in them. While the whole Shandril Saga has way more "spellfire" than magic, it's still interesting and fun to read. The characters are funny and interesting and I really wanted to find out what happened to them next.
I felt like this book (#2 of 3) wasn't as good as the other two, but I can't really put my finger on it. I don't remember enough really to make any kind of detailed dissertation on it, but I remember it being a little slower-paced, and not quite as interesting as the other two were. All in all it was a definite must-read of course to get to the 3rd book (the best in the trilogy!).
The Shandril's Saga trilogy is one of my favorite series, and I look forward to rereading them one day.

Book Description
BARWORLD! For all the years that BILL had served in the Troopers, with all the hard beds, hard heads and no creds, any booze on offer was probably embalming fluid, or worse.
BARWORLD! An assignment there promised bubbly, brandy and beer galore - enough to give BILL's right arms (both of them) at last some idea of just what they were for.
But that was before Uncle Nancy's Cross-Dressing Emporium. And the Time/Space Resonation Nexus. And the Hippy from Hell.
They were enough to completely alter a person's perceptions of reality.
And, like, totally bum him out.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best but good.......2002-03-08
Just so people don't get confused, I thought it might be a good idea to mention here that this is exactly the same book as Bill the Galactic Hero on the Planet of Ten Thousand Bars, or if it isn't it's virtually the same. On the whole the book is good, although I must say it isn't as good as some of the others in the series. It has its amusing moments, but it is a bit on the bizarre side, no denying. If you enjoyed the previous outings of Bill then you ought to read this one for continuity sake if nothing else. I know this isn't a stellar review, but it's still a good book and worth the time it takes to read.

Tell Me the Promises: A Family Covenant for Eternity.......2000-03-25
This book has 7 stories & 7 paintings that are just awesome. I have literally gotten a dozen of these books for gifts for new parents to be read with their child when he or she is older. I highly recommend this book for families with young children as there is a place at the end of each story for the parent to make a covenant with the child.

When Dreams Cross (Second Chances Series #2)
ASIN: 0849943019 |
Book Description
Beautiful, three-year-old twins Kara and Lizzie Holbrooke live a charmed life with their widowed but doting father, Jack. When Jack finds love and marries again, it seems all their lives will finally be "happy ever after." That new life shatters when Jack and his wealthy parents are killed in a plane crash. Jack's new wife, Amanda, inherits the family's estate but fails to gain custody of the twins.
Devastated but bound by her covenant to care for the girls, Amanda manages the estate, hopeful she'll be able to return it to Kara and Lizzie one day. Meanwhile, the twins grow up in an abysmal home environment with distant family members and become hard-drinking, shoplifting, promiscuous teenagers.
After years of trying to reach them, Amanda is finally able to offer them love, comfort, wealth--the life they have always wanted. But when all you've known is deprivation, how can you believe a gift of grace? When you've been lied to for so long, how can you ever know the truth?
Intensely involving, emotionally charged, and infused with hope, Covenant Child is an inspiring story that challenges us to embrace the life God holds out to us.
Customer Reviews:
A Touching Read.......2007-08-12
I must admit that when I first started this book, I thought it was going to be one of those overly-simplified, pit-pat books that lack any real depth. The read seemd to be too quick, too simple. I was wrong. By the second chapter, I was deeply invested in the outcome, and as I read on, I saw a wonderful picture of God's grace played out before my very eyes. By the final pages of the book, I was in tears. I'm so thankful that I chose Lizzie's path in my own life, that I accepted my inheritance gladly. But I'm also thankful that, like Amanda, God continues to offer his grace and forgiveness, and that the Karas of the world are always welcome home.
Great Book.......2007-08-07
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. Normally a very slow reader, I read this book in 3 days.
I absolutely LOVED this book!.......2006-07-19
I am so excited to have found a new author to read. Terri Blackstock's book the Covenant Child had me from the first page. It is a book about love, death, money, greed, grace, faith, and trust. Amanda's character in the book reminded me of the Lord and the unconditional love He pours out on His children even when we want nothing to do with Him and the happiness we can find in life by studying His Word and following Him. I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a good read---just be prepared to have to read it straight through.
WRITE A LITTLE FASTER TERRI.......2006-05-29
I read this book in a day. It was so good and touching. It makes you think about kids out there are treated like this everyday. I shed some tears it was so good. I've read alot of Blackstock and she gets better every time I read the next one.
Terri Blackstock's "Covenant Child"...A compelling saga with a great message........2006-03-19
Terri Blackstock's "Covenant Child" is a single story (not part of a series); but unlike her other novels, generally covering a period of weeks or months, this one--focusing on the lives of twin girls and their stepmother--spans a period of fifteen years. It is a compelling saga with a great message...not unlike that of the Biblical account of the prodigal son, which obviously inspired this story of two young women who chose different life paths as they moved through their difficult childhood years to the challenging brink of adulthood. --Ron Howe / Erskine, MN

Product Description
Scripture promises that God's people "shall not labor in vain, nor bring forth children for trouble; for they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them" (Is. 65:22-23) and that Christ "will turn...the hearts of the children to their fathers" (Mal.4:6).
Yet Christian parents today face a disturbing exodus of their children from the Church to the world. Why is this? What is the place of children within the faith? What do the promises mean? Recognizing that this subject is fraught with difficulty and grief, the twelve contributors to this volume seek to address the hard questions and lay a biblical foundation of hope for our children.
Contributors: Timothy Bayly, Joel Beltz, Randy Booth, David Hagopian, Douglas Jones, Dr. Nelson D. Kloosterman, Dr. Charles Alan McIlhenny, Dr. Robert S. Rayburn, G. Mark Sumpter, Tom Trouwborst, Benjamin K. Wikner, Douglas Wilson
Customer Reviews:
A clarion call for church leaders.......2005-08-05
This is a book that every church leader should read, especially those who have flouted the qualifications for ecclesiastical authority laid out by the apostle Paul. It seems odd, at least to me, that a number of ruling and teaching elders in Reformed congregations don't understand that if they lack leadership in their own home how do they expect to be leaders of "the Way." Likewise, can those whose children have rejected the faith properly instruct parents in what a godly home entails? Perhaps, but I won't take them seriously. Many church leaders will undoubtedly make excuses. But they should consider the fact that this irenic collection of essays calls leaders to rebuild their untenable homes for the sake of the church and the faithful teaching of the gospel.
Let me blunt: get your house in order, or step down.
The book is both theologically stimulating and immensely practical. It will encourage parents to be examples of godliness to their children. More importantly, however, the book will reinvigorate our confidence in the salvific promise of God to us and to our children.

Book Description
Covenant and Republic investigates the cultural politics of historical memory in the early American republic, specifically the historical literature of Puritanism. By situating historical writing about Puritanism in the context of the cultural forces of Republicanism and liberalism, this study reconsiders the emergence of the historical romance in the 1820s, before the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne. This book not only aids the Americanist recovery of this literary period, but also brings together literary studies of historical fiction and historical scholarship of early Republican political culture; in doing so, it offers a persuasive new account of just what is at stake when one reads literature of and about the past.
