Book Description
Sue Miller's stories from a chapter in the moral history of our time
Like Sue Miller's bestselling novels, this collection of short stories explores the treacherously shifting ground of erotic and family relationships with deftness and depth. The title story is about a young man who takes up successively with three daughters of the most fashionable family in town. In other stories, whose characters range from a young girl in the first blush of sexual curiosity to a stricken dowager whose seizures release a brutal and sometimes obscene candor, Sue Miller presents a compelling gallery of contemporary men and women with hungry hearts and dismayed consciences.

Miller Works Best On A Vast Canvas.......2005-09-17
This collection of novelist Sue Miller's short stories, some pre-dating any of her longer fiction, are a mixed lot and all tend toward explorations of love's more dismal hemisphere. Be forewarned, if you read this anthology you cross into frequently depressing territory. Only the title story about a now middle-aged man's recounting of his older brother's affairs with three sisters in the 1950's, carries any real weight or lingers in the memory. Fans of Miller's novels, like the masterful suburban tragedy, Family Pictures, or the dark morality play, Lost In The Forest, might like to read this simply to round-out their experience with this author, but for those who appreciate how much can be done with the short story art form might be mildly disappointed, as was I.
Disappointing & Depressing.......2005-08-09
I am glad I picked this up off a sale table & didn't pay a lot of money for it. I have not read any of her other books, but this one was a waste of my time. The title story was the best one and it went downhill from there. The stories were disappointing &/or disgusting &/or irritating. I kept waiting for something more to them and they fell flat. Perhaps there was a hidden meaning? Well, it was too well hidden! This book went into my recycling bin and the waste mgmt. people took it away!
Short stories that focus on the darker side of love.......2003-08-28
With her stories of infidelity, divorce, and sexual harassment/assault, author Sue Miller delves into the darker side of love and relationships. In the title story of this book, she describes the desperate attempts of a boy from "the wrong side of the tracks" to reinvent himself as part of a local wealthy family, the Abbotts. He dates the three Abbott daughters in turn, with each relationship ending in a bigger disaster than the last one. (Fans of the movie, take note: this is NOT a love story, and the role of the younger brother--Joaquim Phoenix in the movie--is little more than that of the story's narrator here.) The next two stories, "Tyler and Brina," and "Appropriate Affect," address both the obvious and the more hidden costs of infidelity. Explicit photographs play a role in "Slides" and "Travel," while the stories "What Ernest Says," "Calling," and "The Birds and the Bees" cover even darker sexual subjects. The stories, while engrossing, are somewhat unpolished: the first story, "Inventing the Abbotts," could have easily been a novel on its own, and the final story, "The Quality of Life," seems to end abruptly and awkwardly. At 180 pages, however, this book is a quick read, and the reader is unlikely to feel that his or her time has been wasted.
An Intriguing, Charming, Refreshingly Good Read.......2002-09-29
I bought this book soon after watching the movie that shares its name...And I just have to say that the movie, "Inventing the Abbots", is not near as compelling nor as convincing as Miller's version. Not to mention, that the remaining collection of stories in her book are all astounding! The details she brings to her characters make every story in this book so heartfelt and poignant...It is a must-read for every serious lover of literature! For Miller is a novelist that brings these characters to life with such candor, and explores the frailty of human nature and the darkness that lies somewhere in us all.
Charming.......2001-09-29
Maybe a bit predicatable, but an interesting look at middle America.
Book Description
Perverts, malcontents, and macho men join the Navy to be deep seadivers and taunt, drink, fight, and harass each other across the Mediterranean during 1976. Diving in sewage, shark, and rat filled waters, the men aboard the fleet tender USS Puget Sound do the underwater dirty work of repairing aircraft carriers, destroyers, and cruisers. Turd putting becomes an Olympic sport, the gorgeous drag queens of Naples become humiliation for the new recruits, and BOHICA (Bend Over, Here It Comes Again) becomes the motto of the fleet. All of the stories are true and all of the characters are real however, their names have been changed to protect the guilty.

The Most Manly Book I've Ever Read.......2007-04-02
My review title pretty much says it all. If I made a list of the most manly books I've ever read, this one would be at the top.
It's very funny- but very crude and crass. Be warned, if you have a weak stomach this book is NOT for you. Oddly enough, even though this book almost brought me to the point of nausea a couple of times, at the end I wished it'd been triple it's length.
I hope Mr. Fredrickson writes a sequel. It's an interesting peek at a military occupation that doesn't get a lot of ink, and it was a fun diversion for the weekend.
MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD!.......2007-03-27
This book is thoroughly entertaining!
I would find myself placing the book down after one or two chapters just to ponder over the unimaginable stories. I could easily see this becoming a movie.
No need to have a military background to fully enjoy this book. I am purchasing several to send to friends and family. I know they will love it too.
GREAT and HILARIOUS!!!.......2006-09-04
I would highly recomend this book to anyone who has been in the navy or had family in the service or anyone interested in learning about the REAL navy the recuriters never tell you about. Will keep you laughing from page to page. A Must read!
First book to actually make me laugh out loud.......2006-08-08
I met Dan a few weeks ago and he gave me a copy of his book. He is a great guy with tons of stories, but the best are in the book.
The book is a compilation of several stories of Dan's Navy life. The story of BOHICA will make you bust a gut. If your current or former Navy, you may just give yourself "the treatment" when you read it. A whole boat embodying the spirit of BOHICA. Hilarious!!!
The book is a little raw, but so is real life. And a boat full of guys can get real raw. So if your a wishy washy baby, don't bother. Dan will scare you to death.
On the other hand, if you want a book that will actually make you laugh out loud, this is it. Buy it. You will not be disappointed. And you may find, like me, you re-read this little book over and over. It's great!!!
Book Description
Beyond the dimensional rift exists an evil known as the Negation, an empire bent on expanding into our reality. They have kidnapped an array of beings from across the CrossGen universe, condemning them to a prison planet where their strengths and weaknesses can be probed. Lost and without a clue, a small group nevertheless breaks free of their gulag. They manage to escape under the dubious leadership of Obregon Kaine, a human being without any special powers or abilities that somehow forges them into a team. Kaine convinces them that the only way home is to find, corner, and defeat Charon, the godlike leader of the Negation Empire. It's The Great Escape meets The Dirty Dozen in a galaxy far, far away.

Review of BOHICA.......2003-06-01
Tony Bedard returns to comics in this all new monthly. The artwork is stunning and the story is solid as well. Several hundred beings from the Crossgen Universe are abducted by the Negation Empire. One character, Obregon Kaine, assumes the role of leader and uses his smarts to help himself and others escape but they are constantly on the run from the empire and must use their wits and powers to constantly elude them. The dialogue is wonderful and the part where the Kremmin appear is hysterical. If your a fan of films like The Dirty Dozen or Kelly's Heroes then this is a match made in Heaven.
I read it by mistake and I got hooked!.......2002-11-14
Because I already read probably about two-thirds of the CrossGen line, I was planning to skip "The Negation" when it came out. (Not because the CrossGen books weren't good, but just the opposite! I couldn't afford any more!) The clerk at my comic shop dropped the Prequel issue into my reserved folder by mistake, and I decided to pick it up anyway -- and got immediately hooked.
Although each CrossGen comic series stands on its own, they do take place in a shared universe with clues as to an overall pattern appearing in each title. For fans like myself, who enjoy solving the puzzle, this book and Crux are absolutely essential. All of the diverse elements and intriguing potentials of the universe come together in these books. "The Negation" is about a band of characters from the CrossGen universe -- some from worlds we have visited in the other titles, others we have not -- who are abducted by the Negation and brought to their own universe for experimentation. A few of them break out and begin themselves to piece together the mysteries CrossGen readers have pondered since the company debuted -- What are the Negation? What do they want? What is the secret of the sigils?
This is a book for any comic fan who digs science fiction, fantasy, mystery, military-style action or superheroics. In fact, the only downside to this book is that once you start reading it, you'll want to get ALL of the CrossGen titles to help you piece it together.
A great comicbook that would make a great movie!.......2002-10-28
An intriguing, scary sc-fi prison break story.
Beings for all over the galaxy have been kidnapped by an evil empire bnt on conquering their worlds. Most have amazing super-powers, but the role of leadership falls to one ordinary man.
This is the most interesting science fiction adventure I've read in years. It would make a stellar movie, as well.

A true American Patriot..........2005-11-03
You want intrigue? The first 90 pages moves slowly, as there is so much background that needs to be explained. But once the story takes off, you can't put the book down as it takes you into the depths of CIA intrigue and the world of black ops.
Scott Barnes is clearly the true definition of a patriotic American. If you want to read a true story that is suspenseful and frightening, then you don't want to miss reading BOHICA!
Very Interesting Book..........2001-03-21
This book is very interesting and very disturbing as well as it details a mission to find POW's in Vietnam. Scott Barnes details his adventures in an exciting and suspenseful way. Highly Recommended for all interested in the POW/MIA issue.

More of what one expects.......2002-10-30
Wings of Omen, the sixth in the Thieves' World series, brings more of what one expects from the series. Featuring 8 stories from talented authors (including Asprin, Lynn Abbey, Diana Paxson, and C.J. Cherryh), Wings moves the town of Sanctuary into an open guerilla conflict on the street. Like the other Thieves' World books, the format of different stories occurring in the same location has strengths and weaknesses. On the one hand, it is intersting to see the different perspectives each writer brings. On the other hand, interesting ideas generated by one writer or poorly followed up, or not at all. Too, there have been so many authors writing about so many characters that a glossary has become a must to keep track of who is whom. Nevertheless, Wings of Omen is an enjoyable, if somewhat dark and depressing at times, read.

Book Description
The Professional Chef, the official text of The Culinary Institute of America's culinary degree program, has taught tens of thousands of chefs the techniques and fundamentals that have launched their careers.
Now in a revolutionary revision, The Professional Chef, Seventh Edition not only teaches the reader how, but is designed to reflect why the CIA methods are the gold standard for chefs. With lavish, four-color photography and clear, instructive text, The Professional Chef, Seventh Edition guides culinary students--professional aspirants and serious home cooks, alike--to mastery of the kitchen. Over 660 classic and contemporary recipes, with almost 200 variations, were chosen especially for their use of fundamental techniques. These techniques and recipes form a foundation from which a professional chef or home cook can build a personal repertoire.
From mise en place (preparation) to finished dishes, the book covers Stocks, Sauces, and Soups; Meats, Poultry, Fish, and Shellfish; Vegetables, Potatoes, Grains, and Legumes, Pasta and Dumplings; Breakfast and Garde Manger; Baking and Pastry. In addition to a comprehensive treatment of techniques and recipes, The Professional Chef, Seventh Edition teaches readers other critical elements of the professional chef's domain--much of it universally applicable to any kitchen. From "An Introduction to the Professional," to the identification of tools and ingredients, to nutrition, food science and food and kitchen safety, the book is a wealth of beautifully presented information useful for any cook.
The Culinary Institute of America has been hailed as "The nation's most influential training school for professional cooks" by Time magazine. The Professional Chef, Seventh Edition, the cornerstone of its program in book form, belongs on the shelf of every serious cook.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Recognized as the definitive cooking school textbook, the Culinary Institute of America's The Professional Chef is also the perfect guide for independent study at home. More than 1,000 pages are packed into the voluminous seventh edition, with information and recipes designed to teach technique. It is so comprehensive, it could be the only cookbook you need to own. Almost guaranteed to answer any question you could possibly imagine, The Professional Chef is one of the most useful reference books ever written for the kitchen.
With thousands of photos showing step-by-step instructions, you'll learn to identify and trim any kind of meat, seafood, fruit, and vegetable, and extensive photos and descriptions of spices, pasta, and grains take the guesswork out of new and unusual recipes. Seemingly complicated techniques for recipes such as Hollandaise Sauce are described with photos and with so many tips, tricks, and troubleshooting guides you feel as though an instructor is cooking alongside you. Organized from the simplest techniques and most basic information to the more complicated, you can use this book as a reference guide, a resource for increasing your confidence in the kitchen, or as a recipe-filled cookbook. The seventh edition has been completely reworked to include more-contemporary techniques alongside classic, more-sophisticated recipes, and there's greater emphasis on food safety, nutrition, and technology in the kitchen. --Leora Y. Advanced Knowledge and skills.......2007-09-03
.
This is the TEXT book for the CIA. I have used this book to increase my skill level tremendously. I am not a chef, but I am a pretty-damned-good cook.
I found the background information indispensable when creating my recipes and fixing others.
Only buy this book if you are DEAD SERIOUS about food preparation.
This is a culinary school textbook, not a cookbook.......2007-08-18
Billing itself as THE text book of one of THE top culinary schools in America, I had high expectations when I plunked down $40+ dollars for it ... expectations that were only partially met.
The most important thing to remember about this book is that it's a TEXTBOOK, not a cook book. Granted, the material is about food and cooking, yes, but if you buy it with the expectation of finding out the best and tastiest ways to make a given classic recipe, you're going to be sorely disappointed.
Why ?
This book is basically overview material on a wide variety of ingredient and food preparation related subjects.
You'll see, for instance, a picture of what carrots look like when they've been chopped, diced, julienned, fine burnois'd (1/16" square dice), and cut into various other shapes ... but you're not going to find a lot of indepth textual or photographic material on knife selection, care and cutting technique - the book assumes you'll be taught that information in a separate in-person class on knife skills. It's just overview here.
If you look up a recipe on, say, classic American chili ... you'll find a tiny little recipe in the back that gives you a basic, stripped down, no-frills highly minimalistic recipe with very brief instructions ... the reader (student) is left to flesh it out, season it up and otherwise put their own personal/regional spin on it. There's no pontificating whatsoever on the various styles of chili. If you want that, the book assumes you'll go buy a book on chili and learn it on your own.
There are exceptions - stock making and consumme, for instance, is covered in depth.
Bottom line: this is a good overview book for freshmen culinary school students, but if you're a home cook looking for a good book of solid recipes with fully fleshed directions, you'll be much happier with something like "The Complete Joy of Cooking" or "The Best Recipe".
Five Stars Hands Down!.......2006-11-04
I have several cookbooks and textbooks that I refer to on the daily basis and this is one of the most informative and useful texts that I have ever purchased. The only book that I use more then this one is The Professional Chef, Eighth Edition! The recipes are outstanding!
Nasir, Executive Chef
Comprehsensive Work!.......2006-05-06
At the risk of simply repeating, at length, the sentiments expressed in earlier reviews, I'll be brief...
This is an amazingly comprehensive work that covers seemingly every facet of professional cooking. The book is arranged nicely and follows a logical progression.
In buying this book I was looking for something that could speak to cooking technique in such a way as to improve my cooking KNOWLEDGE, vice a simple book of recipes. This book has unlocked a good deal of creativity in me, in that now that I understand the principles that govern how certain types of food behave, I can get on with making up some of my own stuff.
The only word of caution I can provide is that the recipes inside usually make enough for 10 people. If you are comfortable with making conversions you will have no problem.
The Bottom Line: If you own no other book about cooking technique covering a broad range of topics, this is the book.
A must for one who wants to devote himself in the culinary field!!!.......2006-04-17
I have read the book thoroughly & found that this "Modern Bible of Kitchen" is for one who wants to excel in culinary techniques & should try to possess this scripture....I finished this book within a week i bought it & go through this book religiously on a daily basis as i myself would like to pursue a career in the Kitchen...
hats off to the authors n CIA of course for this marvellous publication...
Wish u good luck CIA,
Gaurav
