Book Description
Lorraine Hansberry wrote of Black consciousness before it was fashionable, but she bequeathed to all of us a legacy astounding in its richness and relevancy. Few writers, black or white, are more relevant to present-day America than Lorraine Hansberry.
Here, for the first time, Caedmon has gathered many of her plays, interviews, and speeches into one unforgettable collection.
A Raisin in the Sun: an emotionally lacerating landmark of modem American theatre. A full-cast production starring Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.
To Be Young, Gifted and Black: a glowing, vibrant, searing and, at the same time, redemptively joyous self-portrait. A full-cast production starring James Earl Jones.
Lorraine Hansberry Speaks Out: seven interviews and speeches, recorded between 1959 and 1964, that range in topic from integration to backlash to the greatness and limitations of AfricanAmerican leadership.

ELECTRIC READINGS.......2001-03-17
James Earl Jones, Ossie Davis, and Ruby Dee. Three of today's most prominent actors bring vital poignancy to the unforgettable words of Lorraine Hansberry.
"A Raisin In The Sun," the first drama penned by a black woman to reach Broadway, electrified audiences when it opened in 1959. Loosely basing her play on an Illinois antisegregation case which her father won, Ms. Hansberry sets her story in south Chicago. In it, Walter Lee, a black chauffeur, dreams of improving his life. He hopes to use his father's money to open a liquor store.
However, his mother is against the liquor business, and uses the money to buy a family home. Conflicts arise when someone from this all-white neighborhood attempts to buy them out.
"To Be Young Gifted and Black," a compilation of Ms. Hansberry's writings appeared not only in book form but in 1969 was produced off-Broadway.
Also included on this keepsake audio are seven of Ms. Hansberry's speeches and interviews recorded between 1959 and 1964. It is thrilling to hear her voice.
Regrettably this gifted playwright and author died of cancer at the young age of 34. Her pen was stilled but her words are as relevant and moving today as when they were written.

Completely smitten!.......2006-09-16
I've just finished reading the "Hands Off!" manga 1 and 2 and boy, do I love it or what? *sparkles*
First thing first though. "Hands Off!" is not a yaoi manga. It's not even shounen-ai. It depicts the story of three high school boys: the blond Kotarou with the girly face, the womanizer Yuuto and the morose Tatsuki. The manga is about their friendship and about the cases they solve thanks to their supernatural abilities. Yuuto can see people's aura, Tatsuki can see the past and Kotaru... well, his ability hasn't been revealed as of yet but it has something to do with his touch.
Thanks to the ESP aspect of this manga, a lot of people compare it to "Eerie Queerie" but it's NOT "EQ". Although this manga can be humorous too, it's not your bouncy, giggly "EQ" stuff. These boys solve real cases: murders, kidnapping etc. etc. They catch real baddies and they get hurt. A lot. Especially Tatsuki, but about that later. So, if you thought that "EQ" was a bit too fluffy but you liked the theme, then I think you will love "Hands Off!"
And now to the characters. You can say that they are rather stereotypical. Kotaru is the blond bishie boy who gets himself kidnapped and molested and goes through all the misery that befalls pretty boys in manga. But he is not your usual sweet material. No, he is as bad tempered as any other boy that has been mistaken for a girl one time too many. But his only desire is to find a girlfriend. And that's why his character always clashes with Yuuto's, who is rather laid back but considers "fidelity" a bad word. He loves to tease Kotaru and embarrass him through pretending that they are "special friends". But he likes the boy very much and is always ready to help him out, be it with thugs or girl-related problems. And then there is the third boy, the morose Tatsuki, Kotaro's cousin, who is withdrawn and mostly rude, though he risks his life to protect Kotaru. He likes Kotaro very much but it was Kotaro's touch that had awaken his special ability in him. And whenever Kotaro touches him, this ability grows more pronounced and that drives Tatsuki on the verge of madness. And that is the reason why he tries not to get close to his cousin and keeps driving a wedge between them.
Even though Kotaro is your standard uke boy, it's obvious that it's Tatsuki whom the author loves best. There isn't a story in which he wouldn't get hurt protecting Kotaro or wouldn't suffer silently. Only Yuuto knows what Tatsuki feels since he can see his aura which reflects his mood. And just as a side note - I love Tatsuki best too! XP
But it hadn't been just the characters that drew my attention to this manga. The cases they solve are mighty interesting too. The boys usually find themselves right in the middle of the whole thing without actually knowing how but they always get their man. Although for Tatsuki, it's rather complicated to explain how he knows things because he has never told anybody about his ability.
Oh, and the drawings are truly excellent too. It's not just the style of the manga, the cover looks fantastic too. When you touch it, it feels a bit like plastic and the picture is done in this glossy way, so there are two textures on the cover. Great! Yeah, details, I know XD
So, if you look for a manga with a fast plot, likable characters and you don't mind the fact that it's not yaoi, then this manga is something for you. I would give it 4,5 stars out of five and the fact that I've immediately ordered all the other available volumes should tell you something...
I Love Hands Off!.......2006-04-05
Hands Off! is one of the best manga I've ever read. It keeps you wanting more and get's better with each volume. I have fallen in love with the characters and the story. Tatsuki, Kotarou, and Yuuto are total hotties and they each have disticnt personality's that you can't help, but love. I love this manga and I can't wait to find out what happens next.
The connections deepen.......2006-02-08
This is not my favorite book in the series but it is definetly a good one! The connection of Kotaru (exuse me if I spell there names wrong!)and Tatsuki it just gets deeper. I haven't read it recently but I remember that much. The bond of friendship binds them all along with some new friends. So read it and enjoy.
TATSUKIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!.......2005-07-04
This is the best manga series that i have read to date. the only slightly annoying thing about this series is the fact that if Tatsuki and his cousin were actually to fall in love, it would be incest. thankfully, and depressingly, i doubt they will so i'm pretty sure we're ok there. The art work in this book is very well done and for those of us who wish they had a guy following us around to save us from all the stupid problems we created our selves,i wish to say "wow, this is just what i imagined being liked would be like!" all obsessions aside this is a good series because i goes in depth into a really sad story of two cousins who want to be there for each other, and fight fate and pesky supernatural abilities to do it.
please read it, you'll be glad you did.
One of the best mangas!.......2005-06-14

Book Description
The story of Anton Dilger brings to life a missing chapter in U.S. history and shows, dramatically, that the Great European War was in fact being fought on the home front years before we formally joined it. The doctor who grew anthrax and other bacteria in that rented house was an American-the son of a Medal of Honor winner who fought at Gettysburg-on a secret mission, for the German Army in 1915. The Fourth Horseman tells the startling story of that mission led by a brilliant but conflicted surgeon who became one of Germany's most daring spies and saboteurs during World War I and who not only pioneered bio-warfare in his native land but also lead a last-ditch German effort to goad Mexico into invading the United States. It is a story of mysterious missions, divided loyalties, and a new and terrible kind of warfare that emerged as America-in spite of fierce dissention at home-was making the decision to send its Doughboys to the Great War in Europe.
This story has never been told before in full. And Dilger is a fascinating analog for our own troubled times. Having thrown off the tethers of obligation to family and country, he became a very dangerous man indeed: A spy, a saboteur, and a zealot to a degree that may have so embarrassed the German High Command that, after the war, they ordered his death rather than admit that he worked for them.
Customer Reviews:
"The Enemy Within".......2007-08-11
Robert Koenig's portrayal of Anton Dilger's mission to bring germ warfare to America during WWI is far more than just a gripping story of biological warfare and sabotage in one of its first modern instances. Koenig's work resonates to our own contemporary struggle against terrorism in a number of different ways. First, Koenig delves into the psyche and family history of Anton and with painstaking research presents to the reader the fascinating story of how an American born medical student becomes an agent for Imperial Germany. Second, we are reminded of the response of the US government in dealing with the supposed "enemy within", in both its indiscriminate nature and ineffective results. Finally, Koenig also reminds us of the societal response towards the supposed German-American "threat", one that had its own "liberty stakes" (taste great when combined with "freedom fries", one would assume).
This is a very well researched book that combines intrigue of the mysterious world of spies during WWI with a personal story of a man who chose to betray his country, one that his father served proudly during the Civil War. In a way, Koenig offers a reminder that our current predicament is not so unique.
A very well researched, well written book........2007-05-25
I've read the book a couple of times and have gotten more out with each reading. Bob Koenig has done a tremendous job in terms of the accuracy of his research. His writing style draws the reader into the story. Excellent and highly recommended.
Gripping book, painstakingly researched.......2007-04-06
To someone from outside the US, this book brought many revelations, foremost of which was the insight into the thriving German community that existed there prior to 1914, but now is no more. We are familiar with Italian, Greek and Polish influences, but the Germans, as the enemy after a bitter war, had to subsume their culture.
The anti-hero of this gripping book, Anton Dilger, belonged to a family which was more American than German already, but he felt the pull back to earlier roots. The personal letters and insights that Rob Koenig has painstakingly researched show how horrific incidents like the Corpus Christi Massacre in Karlsruhe can have far-reaching effects through people struggling with their identity.
Koenig tells this story in such a way that you do not know what is coming, and thus every chapter has an impact. Throughout, he reveals his mastery of scientific writing for the public. I've read some of his other work on contemporary science, and was delighted to see this historical work. I hope he does another book. This one, meanwhile, is highly recommended to those who like biography, travel, history, science and warfare, all rolled up in one.
Dogged Search for an Elusive Spy.......2007-03-14
My name is Tim O'Neil (husband of Christine). For a decade, Robert Koenig and I worked together as reporters at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. I offer this as personal disclosure and testimony to my knowledge of Mr. Koenig's fine work. He is thorough in research and careful to confirm information. His writing is clear and absorbing. He applied those skills in writing The Fourth Horseman. He read family files and forgotten government archives. He searched hard for single documents to explain or confirm information on Anton Dilger, and then wrote a full narrative of the motivations and acts of a man who worked hard to cover his tracks. He took time to explain Dilger's era, especially its reliance upon horses, to provide the setting for one man's trail. The result is a fine book.
The Fourth Rider is Pestilence --.......2007-03-14
Because we now remember WWI for its industrialized slaughter, we have almost forgotten how important horses still were to the conduct of war -- so important that disrupting the shipment of horses from the U.S. to Britain and France was a priority for the German war effort. One of the first organized attempts at germ warfare was directed at infecting horses bound for Europe.
This story of Anton Dilger, an American surgeon who worked undercover as a saboteur for the Germans, has an historical sweep that will engage a broad audience -- particularly in light of our newly-heightened fears of biological warfare. The underlying research makes the book a resource for specialists in several areas -- WWI, military history, biological warfare -- and the graceful presentation also suits it to the general reader of history.
Dilger, the son of a Civil War cavalry officer, betrayed his family, his country and his profession in organizing the infection of American horses with anthrax and glanders germs. The author follows him from his childhood in rural Virginia through his education in Germany, his recruitment and work as an undercover agent, to his probable death -- never entirely confirmed -- in Spain during the flu pandemic in 1918.
Even after almost a century, a sad immediacy clings to many aspects of this story. The horses are gone, but much else remains the same.

Should We Live With Disease?.......2003-12-31
To begin with, as there are many books out on epidemic disease, I shall indicate which diseases this one covers, so as to allow the reader to see if his favorite scourges are present. They are: Aids, influenza, leprosy, malaria, plague, smallpox, sphyillis, tuberculosis and the Irish potato fungus.
Nikiforuk's book is both informative and funny. It is short and easy to read in a sitting. Each chapter gives a brief history of the disease and describes its impact on humanity and civilization. The author includes many horrific descriptions of suffering victims, sure to chill any reader.
I took issue with his thesis, however, that disease is mainly an environmental problem, created by changes in human population and living habits. The argument is fine to a point, but Nikiforuk goes too far when he attacks the germ theory. For epidemic diseases are caused by germs! We advance humanity every time we conquer one of these micro organisms. Changes in lifestyle and hygiene can only take us so far. In fact, population is rising largely because we have defeated disease. He seems to yearn for an earlier age when epidemics kept civilization in its place. At one point he even blames the million killed in the Sri Lanken civil war on the eradication of malaria! Population pressure apparently. He says we should live with germs but one must wonder just how much smallpox and aids we wish to live with. As I see it, mankind must continue to fight these 'germs' in every way possible
Interesting book.......2002-09-15
This book is good enough that I have not read it in a few years and can still remember it, in detail. The author's point, that pandemics are generally a function of the actions of man combined with bad luck and worse timing opened my eyes to some things and made me want to research the subject more. That may be one of the best compliments a book can get, that it inspired more reading.
Grim Warning for Mankind.......2001-12-27
In his Short History of Epidemics, Plagues,Famine and Other Scourges, Andrew Nikiforuk makes the point that all the major diseases of history have been caused not by a single "germ theory" but as the result of humanity's misuse of the planet and its resources.
The world as we know it is surrounded by a "superorganism" of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that normally interacts just fine with man. However when man, through his actions, throws off the balance the superorganism reacts in lethal ways.
The book gives one lots of trivia on some of the great killers of our time.Spotlighted are malaria, leprosy, bubonic plague, smallpox, the flu and even AIDS.Nikiforuk treats all these diseases in a matter of fact way and even injects his own gallows humor in the telling.
Some of the material seems somewhat dated (especially concerning the AIDS material) but all in all this is a short volume that speaks to man's interaction with his environment. It may not be pleasant reading throughout but it is rather necessary. The book's final message is that the Fourt Horseman always takes his quarter and unless man changes the way he uses the resources given him he can always expect disease to be close behind.
Fascinating work!.......2001-03-19
Only rarely do I come across a book that totally changes my perspective on a subject. This was one of them. Before reading "The Fourth Horseman", I considered disease to be a tragic but (hopefully) preventable peril of life. I guess it still is at a local level. But this book opened my mind to the global perspective. I now see disease as a natural mechanism to handle the stresses we place on the earth and ourselves. I was amazed to learn how, in many historical instances, the devastation of a plague has actually facilitated a better life for the survivors.
More than a "prologue to 'The Coming Plague'", this book stands alone as a truly fascinating read.
Plague, pestilence and epidemics: past, present and future........1999-11-27
Plague, pestilence, epidemics, pandemics; death by bacteria and virus: the inevitability of it all! Thanks to the author of this all too readable overview of death by microbe I'll never look at agriculture, urbanization, immigration, or anything else again without wondering how it affects or is affected by plague et al. I'm not sure this book is for anyone who wants to live anywhere but in a sealed sterile envirnment but it was very thought-provoking and pointed me toward several other books on the subject. Well worth the reading. It certainly made me look at my resident mice differantly- EEEK, a mouse, run!

A Real Page-Turner.......2000-06-10
Margot Dalton's Fourth Horseman is a perfect combination of mystery and romance. You not only get caught up in the Jackie Kaminsky's investigation and try to solve the case yourself but you also get a peek at Jackie's romance with Paul and her baby's birth. Dalton keeps you in suspense every second of the way. I can't wait for the next one!
Consistently Good.......2000-04-04
An always dependable author, both creative and inventive. I think that in the coal mine of mystery fiction, she may be the diamond lode.
A Wonderful Writer.......2000-03-29
First, would Oprah just go away? Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's sellin' books, but not always good ones. Margot Dalton deserves far more attention than she's got as a writer..an enormously creative force at work here--this woman's books about suspense and children rank up there with the best. Yo--I'm talking about you, Henry James. Will publishing get real and put some muscle behind this writer? Hardly a chance--she ain't rubber stamp, just darned good.

Margot Dalton's Jackie Kaminski series has been a great addition to series mystery fiction, and this book keeps up the high standard she's set. Jackie's involvement in a long-ago murder explores the darker side of the human psyche, but the book never veers into the ugliness of so much slasher suspense, in part because Jackie herself is so multi-dimensional and completely human. That she's a new mother gives this thriller unexpected emotion and irony.

This is one of the best reads ever. Eickhoff leads you throught the life of one of the Old West's most well known & least understood characters.
Misplaced Royalties or Sloppy Seconds?.......2003-07-28
If Mr. Eickhoff has any integrity, he needs to send every nickel of his earnings from this book to the person whose brilliant interpretation of Doc Holliday actually wrote this Tombstone rip-off. Randy, make that check out to: Val Kilmer and you'll sleep better tonight. For a truly original book (you know the kind... the ones the grownups write...all on their own...with no help) try Bruce Olds' amazing Bucking the Tiger. Now, THAT'S art.
Val Kilmer spawns book . . . Film at Eleven.......2001-05-13
I found this book to be somewhat enjoyable, as a casual read. But if you are looking for honest, hard-core facts about the man who was John Henry Holliday, then this book is not for you. But as a fiction book, it was ok. The main problem that I had with it, and that I see other reviewers had with it, is that it is *very* similar to the movie 'Tombstone'. The main character is modeled so closely after Val Kilmer's movie take that he actually uses the same phrases. Even events that happened in the movie, such as the murder of Johnny Ringo, which was probably a suicide, more than a murder, were taken directly from the movie.
On the account of the 'name-dropping', I found it somewhat quaint, almost like a 'Forrest Gump' kind of move. Running into Calamity Jane, Edwin Booth and other such notables was quite fun, if you're interested in that.
I would have given this book four stars if not for the end. It happened almost exactly as it did in the movie 'Tombstone', which was very disappointing and almost sad. And throughout the whole book, the main character was spouting off phrases from the movie, almost verbatim, such as 'You're a daisy', which was certainly the 'in' slang word of the time, but not as much as was used in the book. But the whole thing about 'I'm your huckleberry' got to be a bit tiresome, as he said it like twenty times, and a bit embarrassing for me to read it. Another example was the use of the adjective 'cosmopolitan' to describe towns, places, etc.
The book itself was well written, with the descriptions of the South being dead-on. Magnolia, and willow trees and an array of interesting characters contributed to the 'persona' that we know of as being 'the South' were all very interesting. The pace of the book was well-set, nice and easy with out being too hurried or too slow.
All in all, I'm pretty sure I would recommend this, if you have an open mind towards the *fictional* character of John Henry Holliday. But if you're looking for a true to life story, check out 'And Die In The West' by Paula Marks, which is one of the best non-biased tellings of both the fight at the O.K. Corral, and the stories of all the men involved.
An excuse for Eickhoff to be an historic name-dropper.......2001-01-31
I found this book to be very disappointing after having enjoyed his joint effort, "Bowie, a Novel", so very much. It wasn't the racism, about which I was duly warned; after all, it was set in a very racist time and the attitudes certainly fit the characters. No, it was the name-dropping that got to me. Eickhoff had Holliday hopping aroung the country meeting, and frequently bedding if they were women, many, many famous people. Names that come to mind are Belle Boyd, the Confederate agent, Mary Anderson, the Union doctor, as well as the Earp brothers. I just got tired of it and gave up on the book.
Oh please!.......2000-09-08
If you are a Val Kilmer fan you'll just love this book. If you're looking for Doc look elsewhere. Perhaps the best biography of Doc ever written is the long out of print "DOC HOLLIDAY" by John Meyers Meyers. If you can find a copy of it you've come close to finding the real John Henry Holiday DDS.

A Classic western!.......2005-06-20
It was one of the ugliest feuds in the remembered history of the frontier -- a war between cattlemen and sheep-herders. Frank Rachel rode into the Basin with nothing but a powerful desire to start his own spread. Suddenly, there was fighting all around him, and Frank Rachel was forced to call on the naked nerve he didn't even know he possessed, to kill -- or lose everything. Based on a true story, "The Fourth Horseman tells of the Peaceful Basin War -- the bloodiest range war in the history of the West.

Excellent "Plague in modern times" book by doctor.......1998-07-15
Nourse was an MD as well as a science-fiction writer. This book is well grounded in medical and historical fact.
A new, antibiotic-resistant form of the Black Death arises in North American and kills many around the world. Nourse, correctly, describes the direct deaths from disease as being only a small part of the harm done.

Great for a beginner cook.......2007-09-23
I purchased this book both for my boss that does not have much time with her family and a friend that is just passing her hamburger helper stage of her culinary experience. Both loved this book and claim to use it.
Yum-o.......2007-08-25
After looking as all of Rachel Ray's cookbook I settled on this book because it had a passport section. Meal plans for your tongue to travel the globe while you rest at home. This book I found easy to follow and not intimidating.
Easy and delicious.......2007-07-22
I'm a busy mother of three. I am often finding myself needing to come up with a quick and delicious meal at the "last-minute". More often than not, Rachael saves my day!!!
Great easy recipes.......2007-07-22
I picked up this book because I enjoy the show. We have used several of the recipes for the past couple weeks, and have enjoyed each one. I served a pasta salad at a picnic and everyone wanted the recipe. I think that some of the recipes need tweeking and they do take a tad longer then 30 minutes, unless you move really fast.
Too frilly..........2007-07-12
The type of food in this book is not something I would cook on a daily basis. I was very dissapointed!
