Book Description
Ilhéus in 1925 is a booming town with a record cacao crop and aspirations for progress, but the traditional ways prevail. When Colonel Mendonça discovers his wife in bed with a lover, he shoots and kills them both. Political contests, too, can be settled by gunshot...
No one imagines that a bedraggled migrant worker who turns up in town–least of all Gabriela herself–will be the agent of change. Nacib Saad has just lost the cook at his popular café and in desperation hires Gabriela. To his surprise she turns out to be a great beauty as well as a wonderful cook and an enchanting boon to his business. But what would people say if Nacib were to marry her?
Lusty, satirical and full of intrigue, Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon is a vastly entertaining panorama of small town Brazilian life.

Great Book For First Time Amado Reader.......2007-08-15
This was the first book I read from Jorge Amado, and it's one of the best books I ever read. I won't give away the plot here, but the novel roughly chronicles the modernization of a small South American township and the politics and drama with it's everyday citizens, primarily the free spirited Gabriela of whom most of the town residents are not quite ready for.A fascinating book on the culture of Brazil.
I loved this book!.......2007-05-30
Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon is another one of Jorge Amado great accomplishments. If you've never read a great work by a Brazilian author, you don't know what you're missing. I've already read Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, also by Jorge Amado, and I plan on reading every one of his books.
Great Book.......2007-05-12
The book arrived in perfect shape.
It's a great book. Jorge Armado is a great Brazilian writer.
Good choice!!!
Love Story Brazilian Style.......2007-03-26
Excellent novel. With its quick-paced story line, its unforgettable characters, and its treatment of changing customs in rural Northeastern Brazil eighty years ago, this is a must read for anyone wanting cogent insights into Brazilian society.
Spicy Book!.......2006-07-20
I love books that bend my perspective. Gabriela is such a juicy, vibrant protagonist. And the book is written so poetically. Just reading it will make you feel more alive!

Book Description
Long out of print, The Chronicles of Cheysuli is the fantasy epic that launched Jennifer Roberson's best-selling career. A sprawling saga of the exiles-and return-of a warrior race of shapechangers, the magical odyssey begins in these two novels, together for the first time in one volume.

ok reading.......2007-10-03
I was kind of excited to read something different. The first book I loved. Shapechanging heroine. Couldn't have expected more. Second book, skipped forward five years and went to a different character, ok, can handle that. The remainder of the books in the series jump 20-25 years, and change to the children of the characters in the prior books. All are about serving the prophecy. I normally finish any series I start. I couldn't finish the Cheysuli series. By the end of the sixth book, it was pretty rote on how the entire book went. Meet 20 year old child of former book, he/they have some trouble, tried to be turned to evil, triumph over evil, marry next part of the prophecy, have a child. Rinse and repeat. I couldn't even finish book 7, let alone read book 8, because it was so repetative. In the introduction to Shapechanger's Song, the author admits that the series was origionally unpublishable, and had to change many features of the book to get it publishable on someone being nice. I think some of the features of the book show this, and was kind of disappointed to read this after enjoying the Tiger and Del novels. Over all, first two books in the series (both in the Shapechanger's Song Omnibus), I think are well worth reading. Books 3-8 you can live without, unless you want to rinse and repeat all of the story. Maybe book 8 is different, I don't know. I just couldn't handle any more of the same story line for so many generations. I get the point. Good wins, evil awaits another day.
Rape is okay!.......2006-06-11
Or at least that's what I got from this novel. But only as long as you can change into a pretty animal. And have long flowing hair. Oh, and hard manly man muscles are a must.
The main character, Alix, in typical fantasy heroin fashion, discovers she is Super Special and is part of an Important Prophecy involving a Magical Race that is superior to humans in every way but Tragically Misunderstood yadda yadda rinse and repeat.
And you know what? That's alright. We have these clichés and archetypes because they work. They mean something. Just put a different spin on it and make it fresh and I'm fine.
Making an openly sexist novel that basically gives a big "okay" to rape and I'm not feeling too cool about it anymore.
So one day Alix is kidnapped by one of these fantastical shapeshifters, Finn, who immediately proceeds to try and rape her, but is thankfully stopped by his animal familiar (but don't be fooled and think these special animals are any better. You'll hear more about them later). Alix meets his older brother, Duncan, who explains that their race is being killed off so they have to rape innocent women. For the good of the whole, you see. And plus little bro is just impetuous and oh so headstrong. Just give him a chance!
Then some more stuff happens and Duncan tells Alix they're fated to get married. Then he forcibly kisses her against her will.
So of course she falls in love with him.
Then they do the deed in hopes that she'll get pregnant so his clan will have to let them get married. But horrors of horrors, when they get back Duncan finds out that an old flame is pregnant and it might be his! And whoops, a long time ago he promised the girl he'd marry her, so sorry Alix, even if you are pregnant I have to marry this other woman. You can still be my little woman I keep on the side though!
Alix says absolutely not, and wants nothing to do with anyone else in the clan, either. She also finds out she's not pregnant. So the clan decides she will by forcibly married to, you guessed it, Duncan's little brother Finn. Alix says no. Many times. But in this world "no" means "yes" and "I'd rather die" means "God yes take me now."
And all the while Duncan can stop it with a few words, but because Alix won't be his lover he tells her she has to be raped by his brother nightly so she'll be a good little baby factory.
But then there is a ray of hope! It turns out Duncan is not the father of the old flame's baby and he really can marry Alix! No need for raping after all! Hoorah! She takes him back and all is well! What a romantic story!
And then the magical animals tell us that a woman's only purpose in the whole wide world is to have children. What other use are we?
And that's when I finally stopped reading this utter garbage.
No Potential.......2005-05-04
I disagree with some of the reviewers that have said that this book shows alot of potential for whatever reason. Just from reading chapter one I could tell that this series was going to be just filled with cheesy clitches that make her Swordborn series look good. I meen serriously why is this author so strongly thrusting her view points down the readers throats?
Think about it for a minute:
1. Strong female character (A commoner) Alix talks down to royalty (a prince). How is it that they even met?! I just don't understand this one, it's not like a prince has all the time in the world to gallop away and meet up with a crofters daughter! He wouldn't even be allowed outside of the palace.
2. I couldn't stand the world that she was trying to create. It seemed that she wanted to create a world that would reflect her world views and politics about what was right and wrong. Come on folks what's up with this here! People complain constantly about other authors doing the same but they seem to love these authors that do the very same.
3. I will say it once and say it again, this author is extremely sexist. It's diffinately layered throughout all of her writing. Just read the book and you'll see exactly what I'm saying here. Nor wonder why Malonie Rawn and Robison got together to write "The Golden Key." They share the almost exact same view points!
Very Interesting.......2005-04-08
Ms. Roberson's ability to create a world and delve into it's history, interactions with the people, and the impending sense of fulfillment are tremendous. She has taken bits and pieces of familiar cultures, inter-twined them and has given them a wonderful twist to create a fantasy enjoyable to readers ages 12 and up. I have enjoyed reading and re-reading this series. Pure enjoyment!
Lots of potential.......2004-08-02
First of all, I'd like to say that I hate when reviewers tell others to ignore those reviews that disagree with them, as if only their own opinion is valid. I hope any who reads these reviews in order to decide whether it is a book they want to read will look at them all with an open mind. That said...
I loved the intricacy of the world, and became infatuated with the Cheysuli as a race. I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with the characters, however. The only characters I consistently liked were the Lir. Reasons: I got really tired of Alix's hypocrisy very quickly. Her cries against racial prejudice while possessing the same got old fast. I was relieved when she finally seemed to get over it, but I would have appreciated it never having been there to begin with, since it was an inconsistency in her character.
I also had a few problems with the Cheysuli. Their attitude toward women rather surprised me coming from a female author. They seem to place a woman's value ENTIRELY on her ability to bring children into the world. As if that isn't enough, Finn (who for some reason some reviewers are in love with) admits that he's willing to commit rape in order to try to replenish their dwindling numbers. I see no shame from him about this fact, and it wouldn't bother me if he was a villain. But Finn is a character I am expected to like. I am expected to like an unrepentant would-be rapist.
The author has an unhealthy love of adverbs as well. Candles should flicker, not glow flickeringly. People frown at other people. Don't stare frowningly, that sounds ridiculous. Her editor should be slapped for allowing such abuse of grammar. It comes across as incredibly unprofessional.
I will continue reading this series because the world has a lot of promise, and I'm going to hold onto some hope that these problems might be worked out and it might be improved upon. I'll cross my fingers.

Gus.......2005-11-23
I read the entire series for the Chronicles of the Cheysuli 14 years ago and they have been unforgettable. I recently read them again and it was just as fantastic. I do mean fantastic.
The first book does have a strong female character, but if you read the completed series, you will find that the male influence is just as strong, if not stronger. It is excellent balance.
Warning: It's hard to put the books down and you will stay on the edge of your seat until the very end. My advice is to get the whole series of eight originals books, or the newly reprinted 4 omibus. The fisrt book sets the screen for the rest of the books/ series, although each book can stand alone as an individual story.
I highly recommned the 4 reprinted omnibus. (re: 4 books is easier to keep up with than 8)
Average at best.......2005-03-21
I picked this book up at a used book store for about a buck, and... I pretty much got my money's worth. Stereotypical characters, a thin plot that moves very quickly with little development, and a so-so female protagonist doom this one to obscurity. The story does revolve around a few interesting ideas, the shapechangers and a pogram against them, but there is sadly little character development and the effort at a prosaic writing style really makes this more of a melodrama than a fantasy novel. I found Alix to be tolerable at points, but when every male character focuses on impregnating her, the plot runs a tad thin. Not sure if I'll be reading further into the series, but it sure did not catch me from the get go. Read this if you've exhausted the better fantasy out there and you're looking for a moderately entertaining and quick read.
Also... I suspect that all the 5 star reviews were from people who read this ages 14 and under, and it's a nostalgic favorite, because the story just isn't that good.
Precursor to a fabulous series!.......2004-03-26
Ignore the nay-sayers. This series is what got me hooked on fantasy! I honestly don't think Jennifer Roberson gets nearly as much credit as she deserves for Chronicles of the Cheysuli. I first started this series when I was thirteen and from that moment on I lived and breathed the world of these characters for years. I was actually most enthralled with the last book "A Tapestry of Lions" where we get to hear the story almost entirely from the Ihlini side. A twist that just blew my mind at the time! But I was crushed after I realized the series was over. So I went on to devour Jennifer's other series starting with "Sword-Dancer."
Jennifer's female characters are amazing! I love how strong and courageous they are! Before her I'd stayed away from fantasy precisely because I thought it was all about boys going off and saving the world while the women either stayed home or stood on the sidelines gazing fondly at them. Jennifer's Alix immediately caught my attention and opened up a whole new world of possibilities to me. In fact, I think Robert Jordan can learn a thing or two about creating strong female characters from her.
I'm especially excited now because I visited Jennifer's official site (http://www.cheysuli.com) and found out she will be writing three more books in the Cheysuli Chronicles. One of which involves the forbidden romance between Hale and Lindir, which is what the entire series extended from so I can't wait to find out exactly how it happened.
I love all the characters so much and some of the concepts are far more advanced than most detractors of the tale are willing to concede including Tahlmorra (fate, kismet), meijahs (Cheysuli mistresses), the qu'mahlin (the racial war that started it all), the a'saii (Cheysuli zealots dedicated to a pure line of descent), i'toshaa-ni (Cheysuli purification ceremony; atonement ritual), the Prophecy of the Firstborn, and of course the lir (animal familiars that enable Cheysuli to take animal form).
The politics between Homana and the other kingdoms (especially Solinde) are also well done. Basically, if you haven't read this series yet then pick it up in Omnibus form starting with "Shapechanger's Song" and read it right away! You'll walk away with a family of characters that you're sure to treasure forever.
Still dreaming after 13 years.......2003-10-13
I first read this series 13 years ago when I was 17 years old. I remembered literally falling into these characters & the world they inhabited. I wanted to BE Alix (although I was much more attracted to Finn than Duncan). I found myself thinking about the characters & imagining having a "lir" even when I wasn't reading the books. I recently picked up the series again after 13 years and was able to capture that feeling again! This first book in the series was fantastic as are all that followed. IF you want to step out of your world for awhile step in this one that Jennifer Roberson has created. "Cheysuli i'halla shansu"
Worst Fantasy novel I have ever read.......2002-10-30
This should be more appropriately be shelved in the Romance section, because that is what it continually reminded me of. The gushing prose and melodrama was suffocating. The strong female protagonist was simple and irritating (compare her to Kerowyn, from By The Sword by Mercedes Lackey), and none of the male characters were likeable. I seriously started to expect that every male character in the book (including her FATHER and the ANIMALS) to try to force her to have sex with them! I struggled through this book because a friend recommended it to me. If you love Mercedes Lackey, Patricia McKillip, or even Anne McCafrey, stay away from Roberson. Stick with the best.

exciting feminist adventure.......2001-10-24
This book is an excellent example of fantasy, feminism, and lesbian fiction all in one. I really enjoyed the adventures of Tazzi, the main character, and felt that the book was very well written. Something fun and absorbing, this book and it's sequels are a fave series of mine.
A must-read for lesbian sci-fi lovers.......1998-09-17
I was thrilled to learn more about Tazzil. Since her character was introduced in the first book, we are able to watch her as well as the Hadra develop as a person and a society. For anyone who loves lesbian sci-fi, you must read this series.
EXCELLENT SEQUEL.......1998-08-31
I have read all three books and must say The Journey to Zelindar : The Personal Account of Sair of Semasi, was my favorite. I was saddened to learn that "Daughters of the Great Star" is now out of print. I hope it will be reprinted soon so others can enjoy them as I have. The next two of her books are not stand alone, they must be read in sequence in order to follow the heroines adventure. I assume her final book called "The Red line of Yarmald" which has not yet been published will be out presently.
Come on Diana, we look forward to another wonderful adventure soon! WHERE ARE YOU????
Book Description
Let's face it. In America's Test Kitchen our goal has always been clear: develop the best recipe possible. Only rarely have we stopped to consider the fat or calorie content of the food we make
until now.
The Best Light Recipe is different. In response to the increasing interest from our readers to shed the same obsessive attention the right ingredients and techniques for the guaranteed foolproof recipe for lighter foods, we are pleased to offer more than 300 guaranteed foolproof full-flavored, lower fat and reduced-calorie recipes, 95% of which are completely new! Each recipe lists calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, protein, fiber and sodium per serving to help you cook smart.
From chunky guacamole to brownies, from macaroni and cheese, lasagna, and spaghetti and meatballs to blueberry muffins and even chocolate cake and cheesecake, we tested and retested our favorite recipes until we arrived at the best recipes that cut calories and fat without sacrificing flavor. We also recognized that we couldn't do the impossible- so if we weren't satisfied with the results in our kitchen, the recipe didn't make it into the book. Nor did we include recipes that relied on smoke and mirrors to reduce fat and calories, like beef stew with only a forkful of beef or cookies the size of quarters.
The Best Light Recipe, packed with more than 100 illustrations and 16 pages of full-color photos, also includes naturally healthy recipes tweaked to be even lighter and healthier, like gazpacho, poached salmon, stir-fry chicken, grilled tuna burgers, and pan-roasted asparagus. And the healthy techniques you'll learn, including using milk and cornstarch instead of cream and butter to make a simple pan sauce (trust us, it really works), or reserving the good olive oil to lightly drizzle on your pasta before serving (when you use less and get the most flavor), will last over a lifetime of healthy cooking.
The Best Light Recipe also features objective equipment ratings and ingredient tastings, from the best muffin tin and Dutch oven to the best soy sauce and chicken broth, as well as illustrated tips and techniques, from slicing flank steak for stir fries, to creating the best deep-fried crust without actually frying. In short, it is your essential guide to lighter, great-tasting recipes that deliver every time.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome!.......2007-09-21
Great book on how to cook common normally high fat high calorie dishes that are trimmed to more healthy. The mac and cheese was awesome. You'd never know it wasn't the full fat version. You will not be disappointed if you buy this book.
I love this cookbook.......2007-09-09
Everything I've made out of this cookbook tastes great. The brownies are wonderful, along with the chocolate sheet cake (to die for!), and the hummus too.
light but serious.......2007-09-01
This is an excellent recipe book for the serious cook. The instructions and explanations are thorough. I particularly appreciate the detailed review of processes and ingredients that did NOT work to convert regular high-fat recipes to low-fat versions! The only problem I have with the recipes is that at times they do require very careful attention to process. For example, the cheesecake on the cover may be delicious (I haven't made it), but the making of both the crust and the filling requires a level of finesse which looks to be beyond me. And the result is still a slice with 400 calories! The other recipes I have tried have turned out very well, however, and I am enjoying the book.
Another Great Book by Cook's Illustrated.......2007-07-22
I have made several of the recipes in this cookbook. They have been great. Recipe sections I enjoy are homemade salad dressings, soups, pan sauces for chicken and, of course, desserts! Cook's Illustrated does not compromise taste or quality in any of these recipes.
Lackluster compared to the rest of the series.......2007-06-30
I have been looking for ways to lighten up my diet, and since I love Cook's Illustrated I figured I would give their book The Best Light Recipe a try. What I found was a whole lot of inconsistency. I have tried five of the recipes so far: Chinese Chicken Salad, Meat & Cheese Lasagna, Macaroni & Cheese, Brown Sticky Rice, and New York Cheesecake. Of the five, only two were worth making again, not a very promising start. I was tempted to try the chocolate chip cookie recipe, but when they manage to cut a paltry 10 calories from each cookie, I might as well stick to the regular recipe I have.
The Chinese Chicken Salad is one of the worst I've ever had. Shredding the chicken made for a weird texture, and the dressing doesn't have nearly enough oomph to it; if I made it again, I'd do sliced grilled chicken (possibly basted with hoisin at the end of cooking) instead of their combination saute and poaching, and to the dressing I would add extra hoisin and a small splash of sesame oil (which they completely left out) to boost the flavor. Both of these will bump up the calorie count a little bit, but it's better than making a big bowl and throwing half away because you just couldn't enjoy it. Mac and cheese tasted hollow and dull, and the brown sticky rice was overcooked and dry. The lasagna was good, but to get it there I had to add more herbs, and the cheesecake recipe is one of the best cheesecakes I have had, delicious and creamy enough that if I just took a bite without knowing, I never would have guessed it had a fourth the fat of a traditional cheesecake.
I was at odds with some of the portion sizing on "makeover" recipes. Most notable was the lasagna. In The Best Recipe, the classic lasagna recipe has 1 pound of dried lasagna noodles and serves eight; in The Best Light Recipe, there are 8 ounces of dried lasagna noodles and the same size dish serves 10. Likewise, the CI classic mac & cheese recipe serves four, while a similar size light recipe serves 5. The rice portion was half the size of the same recipe in The Quick Recipe. The one recipe that escaped this fate was the cheesecake, with similar recipes both serving 12.
I wish that I could recommend this book to people, but it really doesn't shine. But the cheesecake recipe is good enough to warrant further testing of recipes. I think I would rather skip buying this book (unless I found a used copy at half price) and copy down the cheesecake recipe from the library.

A necessity in any kitchen.......2007-07-30
I love my new Cooking Light cook book. It has everything I need, even an entire section on vegetarian mains for those times I'm having vegetarians for dinner and want to impress! The recipes are easy to follow and tell you everything you need to know about fat content and calorie. They always use low-sodium products and you don't have to sacrifice any flavour to these healthy meals.
kukkimom.......2007-06-01
This book is superb. It has fantastic photos -- a must for me because I like to see what my dishes will look like, not just read about them. The recipes I've tried are great!
If you only have one cookbook . . .......2007-01-16
If you only have one cookbook - this should be it. At least, if you are trying to eat healthy and look like a gourmet cook at the same time! I have many years of the Cooking Light annual cookbooks and other Cooking Light Cookbook special collections (yes, I do have some duplication of some of the best recipes from the different collections offered over the last 20 years) but this one is the very best of all.
the EVERYTHING cookbook!.......2006-10-22
I don't think I could ever ask for a better cookbook. This one has EVERYTHING! Ethnic dishes, great desserts, vegetarian and meaty dishes! You'll never need another cookbook. And the best thing? TONS of *large* mouth watering pictures. At least 1/3 of the dishes listed are accompanied by a picture. I sit down and flip through this book even when I'm *not* the one cooking dinner!
Only thing to keep in mind that the meals in this book are only light when the suggested serving size is consumed. However, the book makes it easy for us healthy eatters by providing the calories, fat, protein, carbs, cholestoral, icon and sodium percentages of each dish!
I can't say enough good things about this book! Buy it!!... and while you're at that, buy one for your mother, sister, best friend and third cousin-twice removed too!
the best of cooking light.......2006-09-17
I love this book I have made several things and they all came out wonderful. My family and friends enjoyed everything and never knew it was light.
Customer Reviews:
Delicious!.......2005-06-19
This is my first Cooking Light cookbook and the recipes are wonderful. The fettucini alfredo is my favorite. Recipes are not quick, but worth the time.
Good, but "The Complete Cooking Light" is even better........2003-12-09
I love the Cooking Light cookbooks and magazine. For those of you unfamiliar with them, their cookbooks are well-organized, contain appealing photographs of many of the recipes, and include a wide variety of food types, including meatless dishes for vegetarians. In addition, most of the recipes are not overly complicated. I like too cook, but I am by no means an expert. If you're in the same boat, have no fear. You can handle most of the recipes in this book. In addition, they include helpful tips and photographs in sections where the recipes are a little bit more complicated. And for those of us who are health-conscious, they also include a thorough nutritional analysis in fine print after every recipe (e.g. calories, fat, fiber, etc.). Most importantly, the recipes are INTERESTING and DELICIOUS. It sounds like a cliche, but no one will know that the food is from a "light" cookbook unless you tell them.
This book is no exception. It contains the editors' picks of their tried & true best recipes over 10 years. While it is a very good cookbook, however, I do like "The Complete Cooking Light" better. It contains many more recipes and, thus, greater variety. If you can only buy one, buy "The Complete Cooking Light." If possible, though, buy both!
Quick, tasty, and low calorie.......2003-10-16
This is the cookbook for you if you like it easy, but good for your waistline. No one ever believes these dishes are from a "diet" cookbook.
My new favorite cookbook.......2003-04-27
I just got this cookbook a few weeks ago and just love it. It is my new everyday cookbook. I have made the individual filet mignons, red eye chicken, chicken & ham tetrazzini, huckleberry cake, parmesan and green peppercorn salad dressing, chicken parmesan. While it is true that there are some "diet" cookbooks out there that provide recipes with lower calorie counts I think this cookbook is more practical. Watching what you eat needs to be a lifelong process and this book makes it doable. Diet books which severely restrict calories are difficult to stick with for a long period. Using recipes from this book you can easily stick with between 300 to 500 calories for a dinner meal which is pretty reasonable and you won't feel deprived. Definitely gourmet. I would definitely recommend this cookbook.
I love this book!.......2002-03-19
I got this book for Christmas and have used it many times already. Everything I have tried has been tasty but my favorites are fettucine alfredo and the ceasar salad. This is not a book for anyone looking to cut all fat from their diet but for someone who wants to reduce fat without sacrificing any flavor. I highly recommend it!
