Penetrating collection.......2001-06-23
This finely wrought collection impressed me with the many ways Laura Furman is able to elaborate simple themes of outsider-ness and disillusion. Each character and situation is unique, rendered with exactitude and a calm, clear-eyed pity. And for each, the yearned-for ideal of home remains just beyond reach; however much work and attention is lavished on house and garden, the protagonists cannot make for themselves a home.
Although most of the viewpoint characters are women, the long, beautiful story "Melville's House" concerns an elderly, dying man taking a day-trip with his daughter and grandson to the great writer's "Lourdes of disappointment," where Melville realized he would not succeed financially after pouring heart and talent into Moby Dick. Along the way, David has time to reflect on the home he tried to create for his family, and whether he remained only a tolerated outsider in it.
"Hagalund," another long story, concerns a young American woman living in Stockholm during the Vietnam War. She has enough vicarious status among the other draft-evaders and radicals to be offered shelter with them, although her famous boyfriend remains on the lam in the U.S. The expatriates' provisional, bored, paranoid existence during the miserable winter is memorably evoked, as the heroine gradually awakens from her tranced dependence.
In the sharp, impressive title story, a woman gives up job and New York apartment to live in the coutnry with her lover. Previously, they have visited each other for various lengths of time, and she has idealized his situation. When the narrator makes her move, she brings a slightly ridiculous, Martha-Stewartish sensibility to his rustic, rumpled lifestyle and learns too late that his larder and bed are already well-stocked by his best-friend's wife.
I strongly recommend these eloquent stories.
Quiet subtle stories.......2001-06-04
This is a book for people who delight in quiet, reflective fiction and for those with an ear for the delicate rhythms of English prose. The stories deal mostly with women, and domestic themes--relationships, houses, families--prevail. There is a subtle depth to all of the people and their lives. Nothing catastrophic occurs, but you can feel the seismic charges that underlie the most ordinary lives. Willa Cather, Peter Taylor, and John Hersey come to mind as writers whose styles are equally quiet and meaningful. Above all, Furman is an American Chekhov.

From the author: Objective: Individuals with alcohol dependence are less likely to possess variant alleles of the alcohol-metabolizing genes, aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2*2) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH1B*2), than non-alcohol-dependent controls. It is hypothesized that the mechanism through which these alleles protect against alcohol dependence is by causing elevations in acetaldehyde, which in turn cause an increased response to alcohol. Previous research has shown that individuals with ALDH2*2 demonstrate enhanced reactions to alcohol compared with those without this genetic variant, but evidence that ADH1B*2 is associated with a greater alcohol response is mixed. This study was designed to determine whether the ADH1B genotype is associated with more intense reactions to alcohol after controlling for the ALDH2 genotype. Method: Participants (N = 101) were Asian American college students. Each was evaluated using objective and subjective measures before and after ingestion of alcohol and placebo beverages. Results: Participants with the ALDH2*1/*2 and ALDH2*2/*2 genotypes were more likely to experience vomiting following ingestion of the alcohol beverage than those with the ALDH2*1/*1 genotype. Participants with the ALDH2*1/*2 genotype also had greater pulse-rate increases, observed flushing ratings, and subjective feelings of intoxication 30 minutes after ingestion of alcohol than participants with the ALDH2*1/*1 genotype, despite equivalent blood alcohol concentration (BAC) measurements. Among participants with the ALDH2*1/*1 genotype, there were no additional effects of the ADH1B genotype on any measures of response to alcohol. Among participants with the ALDH2*1/*2 genotype, those with the ADH1B*2/*2 genotype were more likely to experience alcohol-induced vomiting and to report feeling less "great overall" 30 minutes after ingestion of alcohol than those with the ADH1B*1/*2 genotype. Conclusions: These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that there is an additional effect of ADH1B*2 on level of response to alcohol, hut only among individuals with the ALDH2*1/*2 genotype.

High-flying fun.......2007-04-24
"The Tale of Pale Male" is a gussied-up true story for the Picture Book set. Remember Pale Male--a Red-tailed hawk--and his Fifth Avenue perch? (Mary Tyler Moore lives in his building.) Remember how Pale Male brought his gal pal Lola to his favorite spot and they built a nest? Remember the birdwatchers down below and the momentous birth of two "hungry chicks"?
Pale Male and Lola set off a media storm when they build their huge nest and begin circling the skies of Manhattan. People lined the street to watch the birds fly and the chicks hatch. Winter chronicles their story and their abrupt eviction from 927 Fifth Avenue when downstairs neighbors complain of the "evidence of Lola's meals" falling on "to the balcony below." (Note: Winter includes only bones, leaves, and twigs in this "evidence.") Media and public outrage follow culminating in the restoration of Pale Male's home.
Winter successfully combines two stories in "The Tale of Pale Male." On the one hand it's the story of people standing up for nature even in the heart of Manhattan. On the other hand, it's a nature story--we learn how Red-tail hawks build nests, what they eat, and how they live.
Winter's pallette of grays, purples, and teals beautifully suits Pale Male's city life, especially when contrasted with the opening pages illustrated in the greens, blues and browns of a Red-tailed hawk's life in nature. An "author's note" at the end of the book gives us the straight story.
"The Tale of Pale Male" is best suited for readers ages four to eight. School-aged children in kindergarten through second grade will especially like "The Tale of Pale Male" at story time. Its dual story line will appeal to city slickers and nature lovers alike.

A Wealth Of Pulp Excitement!.......2007-05-25
The Golden Age of pulp fiction may have receded into the sunset, but the genre is alive and well! Still kicking and going strong! Case in point Ron Fortier's CAPTAIN HAZZARD AND THE PYTHON MEN OF LOST CITY. Intrepid Captain Hazzard may have had only a single issue in which to do his thing back in 1938, but he's back now and hasn't lost a step.
As any pulp fanatic knows, the secret to great pulp consists of a tempting brew of colorful characters, nasty-to-the-core villains and over the top action and plotting. But the key, at least for this reader, is PACE! Pulp fiction needs to race along at breakneck pace, never letting the reader have a chance to catch his/her breath. This is the true hallmark of pulp fiction.
And these elements are executed to near perfection. Fortier's Captain Hazzard is as colorful as they come. Having been blind for fifteen years of his boyhood, Hazzard developed his remaining senses to the utmost. Then, sight restored, he set out for adventure, righting wrongs and doing good in the world along with a handful of choice adventurers. And the communicate through telepathy! Pure pulp in its finest form.
As for the story itself, it stays true to its roots. It explodes into action from first page to last with almost every chapter ending in a page-turning cliff-hanger. The men are tough, the action bloody, fast and explosive. The damsel in distress is pretty and plucky. As Hazzard and crew storm into the Lost City searching for the damsel's missing father, the reader is swept up in the adventure. Once picked up this book cannot be put down. Simple as that.
Anyone long-familiar with the grand pulp tradition will enjoy PYTHON MEN OF THE LOST CITY. And, for anyone curious to know what all the excitement of pulp is all about, you'd be hardpressed to find a better example of the level of excitement the pulps provided back in the day. That tradition is alive and well. And writers like Ron Fortier have carried it into the 21st Century. Don't miss it!
A Rockin' Romp!.......2007-05-21
What an uber-fun, super-fast-paced romp! Fortier makes you want to strap on your utility belt, grab the nearest blonde bombshell, and head for high adventure! Clearly a labor of love by both the writer and the artist, the two gentlemen infuse energy, pacing, and sheer entertainment into a slick package. Recommended for those looking for old-school pulp excitement in the grand tradition.
The Pulps Live Again!.......2006-07-09
Ron Fortier's sci-fi detective novel THE HOUNDS OF HELL, plus his BROTHER GRIM volume of short horror-crime stories, introduced this veteran comic book writer as a highly skilled pulp wordsmith, as well.
Now, with his meticulous rewriting and restoration of the Captain Hazzard adventure PYTHON MEN OF THE LOST CITY, an overlooked and long-abandoned pulp hero is reborn with a grandeur worthy of Dent, Haggard, and Burroughs. Readers of DOC SAVAGE, ALLAN QUATERMAIN, and TARZAN will be very well pleased with this handsomely illustrated addition to their bookshelves.
The book is a real pulse-pounder, and the reader might find himself daydreaming about its contents long after putting this book down. Within the space of just a couple sentences Fortier establishes a tangible atmosphere, and his love of the genre, and of words in general, is obvious on every page.
It's clear and certain that Ron Fortier loves his craft. That's a very fortunate fact for all of us.
Pulp Fans Dont Hesitate!.......2006-07-08
Ron Fortier has brought back a forgotten hero from the Pulp Graveyard and given him vibrant new life! If your a fan of High Action and Adventure, Doc Savage, or even Indiana Jones This is a MUST OWN! Captain Hazzard is all the buzz on the online pulp groups. If you have yet to read it dont wait! Cant say enough good things. I anxiously await the forthcoming sequel as well! Fun fast and exciting read!
PULP AT ITS FINEST!.......2006-06-09
"What a yarn. Geez, Captain, my pulp friend, Chester Hawks will eat this stuff up with a spoon. Lost jungle cities, a lovely skirt in trouble and a bizarre, evil villain. It will practically sell itself."
William Crawley, ace reporter, says it all when it comes to Captain Hazzard, a pulp fiction by Ron Fortier and Chester Hawks. This book has everything and then some. From skulking gangsters, atomic rays, to telepathy. There's double o like gadgets to dogfights in the sky with old west sharpshooters. Lost jungle cities with savage inhabitants, insane scientists, and old gods of the snake. Guns are ablaze throughout as haymakers fly in hand to hand combat. There's a volcano and a sacrificial altar and that's only in the main story. Captain Hazzard: Python Men of the Lost City is all of this and so much more. Every moment is an edge of your seat thrill ride and never once did I want to put this book down.
Going in with guns ablaze Ron contributes an extra interview of his thoughts behind the characters. Also included is a ten page preview of the NEXT ALL NEW Captain Hazzard adventure, the first one in over 70 years, by Ron and fellow pulp junkie Martin Powell.
All throughout this book are spot illustrations by Rob Davis which is really what makes this such a great publication. There's also a new cover by Thomas Floyd (Captain Spectre.com) who is remarkable to say the least.
I apologize if I'm sounding like an infomercial here but I have to say it...wait...there's more. There's a preview of the new Captain Hazzard comic beautifully rendered by Craig Shepard and Sean Tenoff.
Captain Hazzard is just an all around fun thrill ride which takes you back to the golden age of pulp at it's paramount. Where serialized fiction was the entertainment of the day and it kept children and adults alike suspended in disbelief in the worlds of tomorrow.

Like a broken spider web..........2004-08-15
this book goes all over the place. The novel is Gary Gygax trying to explain who Gord the Rogue is by showing you his early childhood and the events that happen about him, some of which are behind the scenes. The deeper you get into it the more details, some very vague details about other characters and other events, are tossed at you. The book is not the first in the series and you should not read it till either you are finished or almost finished with both the Greyhawk Adventures series and the Gord The Rogue series (which seems to be a spin off).
The exception to the rule.......2004-05-04
If you love Greyhawk, you will love the Gord books - period. There is only one exception, and that is "City of Hawks".
Gary Gygax tried to change the background of the Gord-stories in mid-stride. What originally (in Saga of Old City) seemed to be fate or cunning of the hero is now "unmasked" to be meddling of powers.
It is obvious that these developments are NOT what EGG originally intended. There are major breaks in continuity and outright contradictions. In the context of the Gord-story, this book had best not been written. Anyway, since the rest of the books is 4 to 5-star reading, and since everyone owning the other books also has this one, there is just one advice: Read this one last (after Dance of Demons), so as to not spoil the storyline.

Book Description
There's a hawk in the city!
New York City is known for its sky-scrapers, subways, and hustle and bustle -- not for its wildlife. So everyone is surprised when a red-tailed hawk is spotted flying over Fifth Avenue, and even more surprised when he decides to settle down on the ledge of one of the Big Apple's swankiest apartment buildings.
The hawk soon draws many admirers. They name him Pale Male and watch as he builds his nest, finds a mate, and teaches his little hawk babies to fly.
Based on the true story of Pale Male, City Hawk brings New York City's favorite hawk to life in a story of family, perseverance, and big-city living.

If you like cinderella then tis is the story you should read.A fairy tale book.Good story plot, and the way their realtionship deepen is not boring.Romantic & funny.
Great title, OK if you like PG-rated romance.......2006-11-09
Playboy Sebastian (Monty) is not amused to be forced back to his homeland of the kingdom of Meridia. Seems his eldest brother has abducated the throne and Sebastian is being forced to take it in his place. The book takes place in the days proceeding the coronation. Emma is the head chef chosen for the coronation banquet. Both meet in less than ideal circumstances. Emma can't seem to stay out of trouble and Sebastion is forever rescuing her. A romance of sorts develops, but both know nothing will come of it due to her lack of suitability as a queen. There is also a interesting plot involving the mysterious circumstances of Sebastians father's death.
A decent teenager-ish romance if that's what your looking for. Not enough steam, well actually none, for me.

Flora MacDonald: The Most Loyal Rebel.......2007-05-28
Hugh Douglas has produced a very well researched and lucidly written book on the famous highland heroine.
The sometimes complicated family and clan relationships are very well and easily explained in this volume.
This book debunks many of the myths and legends that have grown around this singularly impressive woman. She was most certainly legendary and deserving of the status which she attained, and it is refreshing to read the facts of her saga.
Hugh Douglas is to be congratulated for this highly commended work.

From the back of the novel..........1999-10-31
Pawn--Or Power?
On the world called Plateau, telepathy has become the prime source of power, an unopposed weapon with which the ruling elite, the Uppers, can keep an oppressed population under strict control. But when Regan, a daughter of aristocrats, fails to claim her telepathic heritage, she becomes a mere pawn in her father's deadly political games, married off to Gareth. the very man who, unbeknownst to Regan's father, is the leader of a secretly building resistance movement. And suddenly, discovering the key to her dormant powers becomes vital. For only through telepathy can the rebels hope to overcome their cruel telepathic overlords.
Probably one of Sharon Green's best!.......1999-09-07
Sharon Green seems prone to long series, but this book was perfect. Gareth might not have been the most realistically done male, but Regan is next to Tamrissa, my favourite Green heroine. She is talented, realistic, and convincably vulnerable. But that's to be expected. This story is the perfect kind of sweet, not being mushy or sigh like but the kind of thing that just makes you put it down and say 'that's the best book I've ever read!'
Fantastic Read!!.......1998-07-22
This book is a wonderful read for both science fiction/ fantasy and romance readers alike!
A captivating, character-driven , fun fantasy/romance........1997-11-30
A classic Sharon Green tale of self-discovery, challenge, and romance. Regan is a intelligent, talented woman who is an outcast from her family BECAUSE of her strenths. She is betrayed, and becomes her father's political pawn. Eventually, overcoming difficult odds, she finds true love with a wonderful man, and learns to value herself and her unique gifts. It's an easy book to read over and over again!

By now the remarkable convenience of the slow cooker is no secret. It keeps the kitchen cool on warm days and is inexpensive and durable. At last, vegetarians and anyone looking for healthy meal alternatives can take full advantage of this amazing appliance.
Customer Reviews:
love it!.......2007-10-08
to all those considering buying this book, consider no more!
what a gift it is to make great tasting vegan food in about 15 minutes (because that is really all of your labor that is required) and 6-8 hours later...yum! after trying three recipes from this book, i bought a 4qt. cooker in addition to my programable 6 qt.
i have not been sorry. i love how the flavors deepen with slow cooking and no standing over a stove and stirring. i used to get sick of "tasting" what i was making before it even hit the table. the recipes are also dependable. tonight we are having stuffed acorn squash, and i know it's going to be delicious!
Doesn't deliver.......2007-10-03
I received this book as a gift. At first glance the recipes looked good, but what I was really looking for was easy wholesome veggie recipes. Instead the recipes and take more work than I have time for and use a lot of fake meat (soy) which we do not eat in our house. The 5 or 6 recipes we did make were not even that tasty. I will get my vegetarian slow recipes from internet searches from now on. I will be giving this book away.
Awesome slow cooker recipes!.......2007-08-21
I love this book! It has great recipes. My favorite by far is the mac and cheese forentine (it's vegan, the cheese sauce is cashews and white beans). Highly recommended, love it!
easy, delicious, and healthy.......2007-08-07
I bought a slow cooker after reading a copy of this book which I got from my library, then bought the book for myself, and later, a copy for my mother. I use this book atleast once a week and it has made maintaining a healthy vegan diet incredibly easy. I purchased a digital appliance timer for my slow cooker as recommended by the author, and am now able to cook while I sleep, when I'm at work, or outside. If you are a busy, active person with little time to spend in the kitchen, but insist on uncomplicated, delicious, healthy vegan meals with lots of variety, this is the book for you. I highly recommend the Breville slow cookerBreville 5.3 Qt Gourmet Slow Cooker SLC70XLif you are looking for a reliable slow cooker to accommodate the recipes in this cook book.
EXCELLENT PURCHASE.......2007-07-24
I was very reluctant to purchase this cookbook based on previous feedbacks given. I'm glad I went ahead and bought it.
I have made the Spicy Black Bean Chili, the Maple Baked Beans, and the Good Morning Millet Melange. Right now the Perfect Hominy White Bean Chili is cooking in the crockpot. All of these recipes have been delicious.
I plan to try a lot more recipes in the cookbook and have the ingredients written down on my shopping list for the next 2 recipes I want to try "Not Your Mama's Pot Roast" and " Tempeh Etoufee".
The author certainly knows how to make the flavors come together in the recipes I have tried so far.
I have an inexpensive older 4 quart crockpot and I'm satisfied with the results.
This cookbook was a good buy.
