This odd assortment of exploratory essays circles around Dracula's neighborhood by looking at the philosophy of blood, the wonders of the vampire bat, the cryptic life of Bram Stoker, Dracula's movie lineage, and seven other vampiric topics. Author Leonard Wolf conveys his enthusiasm for the Dracula myth and its many resonances without sounding like either a drooling fan-boy or a lifeless academic. Bringing in his personal experiences with English students in the late '60s (Wolf taught at San Francisco State University) Wolf is able to connect the Dracula myth to the meanings of modern lives in a way that is playful, free from presumption, readable, and rigorous.

Book Description

In the 100 years since its publication, Bram Stoker's Dracula has never been out of print.  Once introduced to the world by the silent film classic Nosferatu in 1921, Dracula became an enduring icon of fear, forever immortalized as a frightful embodiment of evil and forbidden sexuality.

Now, in this fascinating and entertaining account, Wolf examines the various interpretations of the immortal vampire in print, film, television, theater, and literature, including an extensive outline of Bram Stoker's life and his literary masterpiece, Dracula.  Wolf explains how the story of a sexually sadistic undead creature/man who feeds on blood worked its way into mainstream society and how it is now used as a ubiquitous marketing tool for products from hair tonic to children's breakfast cereal.

The sourcebook includes:

* An exploration and the history of vampire myths, including the tale of Vlad the Impaler
* An overview of vampire films from the silent classic Nosferatu to Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula
* A discussion of vampire bats and the lore of blood
* A complete bibliography, filmography with movie stills, telefilmography, and a theater chronology
* Maps of Transylvania, London, and Whitby
* A calendar to coincide with the "real time" actions of Bram Stoker's Dracula, complete with sunrise and sunset times as well as the all-important phases of the moon
* And much more...

4 out of 5 stars Insightful Guidebook to a Century of Bram Stoker's "Dracula".......2005-04-24

Published for the centennial of Bram Stoker's masterpiece of gothic horror, "Dracula: The Connoisseur's Guide" is a guidebook of sorts to the Dracula Phenomenon that has continued for over a century since the novel's publication in 1897. At the time, "Dracula" didn't aspire to be anything more than a Victorian potboiler, but the novel found such far-reaching appeal that it has never gone out of print in over 100 years. Author Leonard Wolf also produced the excellent annotated edition of the novel "The Essential Dracula" and has long been one of "Dracula"'s most dedicated scholars.

Wolf introduces "A Connoisseur's Guide" by telling us how he came to be interested in the Dracula Matter, as he calls it, while teaching at San Francisco State University in the late 1960s. This bit of personal information may seem superfluous, but those readers who have followed Wolf's work on "Dracula" will find their curiosity finally satisfied. And the circumstances that led to Wolf's -and indeed anyone's- first book on the Dracula Matter, "A Dream of Dracula", published in 1972, reveal an interesting climate on American college campuses that led to academia's acceptance of "Dracula" as a work worthy of study.

"Dracula: A Connoisseur's Guide" then takes us through the "Dracula" phenomenon, from folklore to fiction to film. Wolf dedicates a chapter to each of these subjects: vampire folklore in various cultures, the symbolism and realities of blood, vampire bats, the 15th century Wallachian Prince Vlad Tepes from whom "Dracula" takes its name, gothic literature, literary precursors to "Dracula", the life of Bram Stoker, an analysis of the novel in four parts, 20th century vampire fiction, and vampire films from 1922 to 1992. Through these subjects, Wolf discusses "Dracula"'s descendants and the basis for its persistent appeal, as well as the novel itself.

"The Connoisseur's Guide" incorporates some elements of Leonard Wolf's out-of-print Dracula books. It is a more evolved and scholarly version of 1972's "A Dream of Dracula", although it lacks many of that book's personal meditations. "A Dream of Dracula" is quoted several times in "The Connoisseur's Guide", and most readers won't need a copy of the older book in addition to this one. A couple features of Wolf's first annotated edition, "The Annotated Dracula", published in 1975, have also made their way here: Wolf's 7-month calendar that plots the action of the novel is reprinted in the back of the book, and the wonderful drawings by Sätty introduce each chapter. These reproductions of Sätty's drawings really aren't big enough to be impressive, unfortunately -just big enough to remind us of how impressive they were in "The Annotated Dracula". But fans and students of Bram Stoker's novel will find "Dracula: A Connoisseur's Guide" and interesting and insightful exploration of their favorite gothic villain by an enthusiastic and erudite admirer.

3 out of 5 stars Guide a Good Read.......2004-02-25

A well-written, well-researched, enjoyable outing from the author of the annotated Dracula. Anyone with a more-than-casual interest in Dracula will be well-rewarded with a read of this book. (And if your interest in Vampiredom's most famous son comes from the movies, don't hesitate to read Stoker's "Dracula" itself ... once you get past the possibly unfamiliar epistolary style, there's a real corker of a story there that too few lately have read!)

Note: a 3 star ranking from me is actually pretty good; I reserve 4 stars for tremendously good works, and 5 only for the rare few that are or ought to be classic; unfortunately most books published are 2 or less.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection.......2002-09-20

It's curious to note, however, that the movie-spawned error of calling Dracula's key London residence "Carfax Abbey" and not "Carfax" extends even to Wolf's canny writing.

5 out of 5 stars TELLS A LOT ABOUT THE HISTORY OF DRACULA AND VAMPIRES.......1998-11-21

I have just recently bought this book (from Amazon) and have found it very interesting. Wolf explains vampire lore, the importance of blood, the vampire bat, and find out about the real Dracula, Vlad the Impaler. Dracula; The Connoisseur's Guide also includes the history of horror in ficton and the precursors of Bram Stoker in vampire ficton. A brief biography of Bram Stoker is in this book, followed by another chapter with a over 30-page "summary" of the original Dracula story. The next part Wolf discusses the vampires tales of 1898-to the present. Leonard then has another chapter in his book about all the Dracula films, from Nosferatu, to Bram Stoker's Dracula.

This book is a wonderful addition to all the books on Dracula and vampires.

In addition to all the great writing, there are loads of pictures, including stunning illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. Also there are maps, film stills, photographs, and drawings.

This is a great book for vampire and Dracula fans everywhere.

Book Description

Acclaimed author Evan S. Connell sends us through the complete experience of a man initially intrigued and then enslaved by art: a curious interest, a rapt fixation, and the becoming of a connoisseur. The Connoisseur trails the evolution of Muhlbach, an insurance executive on a business trip in Taos, New Mexico, who develops an obsession with pre-Columbian figurines after meandering through a curio shop. Entranced yet bewildered by his sudden affinity for a little figurine, Muhlbach succumbs to his intrigue and, thirty dollars later, begins his journey as a connoisseur.

With superb delivery and subtle clarity, Connell allows us to see and feel Muhlbach’s emerging mania, with its impending tension and sudden exhilaration. He illustrates how a new fixation alters our lens on life and shapes our actions.

5 out of 5 stars A book which will appeal to both prior fans of MR. BRIDGE and MRS. BRIDGE and new comers.......2006-05-27

One cold morning on a business trip a Manhattan insurance executive drives to a picturesque artist's community in New Mexico to encounter a small icon in a shop which will change his life. Mulbach is no art fan, but the piece seems irresistible at the time - and holds much power, as does a book which will appeal to both prior fans of MR. BRIDGE and MRS. BRIDGE and new comers.

This is the sequel to Towing Jehovah, a novel that garnered a World Fantasy Award and earned its author the moniker, "Christianity's Salman Rushdie." In this book, the two-mile long corpse of God (the corpus dei) has been towed to Florida, where the American Baptist Confederation has set it up as the Main Attraction at Celestial City. When Martin Candle, justice of the peace for Abaddon Township, Pennsylvania, loses his wife in a freak auto accident just after his doctor tells him he has prostate cancer, he decides it's time to put the Main Attraction on trial for His actions.

    Book Description

In this “funny, ferocious fantasy” (Philadelphia Inquirer), God is a comatose, two-mile-long tourist attraction at a Florida theme park-until a conniving judge decides to put Him on trial in The Hague for crimes against humanity. A New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't read it if you're hypochondriac.......2007-08-21

Great novel, great writing, great cynical sense of humour. Definitely a page turner. Sort of an "Answer to Job" of the modern day with a twist. Don't read it if you're hypochondriac though, I mean seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Author Puts God on Trial - Literally.......2005-05-23

I reviewed Morrow's first book in this series, "Towing Jehovah," in which God's enormous body is found floating in the ocean. The Pope arranges a secret proper burial in an ice vault in the North Pole. I criticized Morrow for wasting numerous opportunities to more fully develop the religious conundrums he developed.

No such criticism is merited for this book. In another wild tale with a new set of characters, God ends up being sold to the Baptists, who plant him in Orlando next to Disney World. They are making tons of cash as believers show up by the hundreds of thousands to pay respects and/or be healed. Enter our hero, Martin Candle, dying of prostate cancer, who somehow manages to get God put on trial by a world court in The Hague, Netherlands, for allowing evil to predominate in our world.

Fantasy prevails as our hero gets to discuss theodicy issues (Theodicy: a vindication of God with respect to the existence of evil) with Abraham, Isaac, The Ram, Noah, Jesus, Job, Satan, Adam, Eve and others. With clever dialogue interspersed (INRI means "I'm not returning immediately"), Morrow maintains an irreverent tone throughout the book.

Opening arguments for the prosecution: ..."They said God was merciful, loving, and just...The prosecution intends to show that exactly the opposite is true...we shall prove that whatever debt we may owe the Defendant for our existence, He has continually acted in a fashion that must be called criminal..."

This paves the way for Morrow to present real arguments, carefully worked out over the centuries by great religious philosophers. The defense attorney presents the equivalent opposing views. The trial is a mini-course on the subject of theodicy for those who wish to be educated on this subject and builds lots of suspense toward the climax.

This inventive yarn shows considerable theological scholarship. Warning: Fundamentalists who stick it out and finish this book may be offended by perceived "sacrilege," and a few neurons and synapses may be singed in the "religion modules" of their brains. First rate book!

    5 out of 5 stars Light a Candle.......2005-02-18

I've now read all three books of Morrow's trilogy and think that Blameless in Abaddon is the best of the three. Each book is quite good and contributes to the overall plot and set of ideas behind this uncanny device: namely, the dead body of God. Morrow exploits this idea with aplomb, giving us a comprehensive and thorough analysis of God's presence in the modern world and the various issues associated with this. For believers and non-believers alike, these ideas need to be carefully surveyed.

Blameless in Abaddon seems to be the most philosophical of the three novels and does a fine job explaining theodicy and its various `solutions.' Theodicy is a philosophical/theological concept that tries to rectify the existence of God (a given in this plotline) with the existence of evil (a given everywhere). The traditional formulation goes: since evil exists then either God is not all good or God is not all powerful. A number of theologians have tried to rectify the existence of evil as: 1) instructive for our spiritual development; 2) unavoidable in the structure of the universe; 3) due to our capacity of free will (and thus our own doing, not God's); 4) an illusion.

While theology can sometimes seem abstract, Morrow achieves a fine balance between providing the details of these matters within the context of fiction and character development. These theological matters are of great significance and do affect how people think about God and the world. Morrow's main character in this book, Martin Candle, is enraged with God and is trying to convict him before the entire world. In order to do so, he needs to explain why it is unforgivable that God has allowed so much evil and further provide true evidence of this evil to sway judges and jury alike.

To the list of righteous and spiritually advanced dissenters-from Job to Ivan Karamazov-we can now add Martin Candle, aka Blameless in Abaddon.

5 out of 5 stars Gullivers Travels & Fantastic Voyage......!!.......2004-07-26

..make for a whopping good read! Our intrepid hero, a Justice of the Peace/ Magistrate in the Philly Suburbs, gets cancer, and his wife, a professional pet-lover, dies while avoiding a dog on a termite infested bridge. He decides he's had enough, he wishes to take on God, 2 miles long and recently comatosely discovered, to Court, at the Hagues' International Court of Justice. At first, this seems too large a task, until he is assisted by a strange Harvard professor who made millions writing children's books. This same professor takes on the "Not Guilty" side, and this begins our journey through on a hallunicatory, fanatastic, trip through good and evil. Journeying through the Body and Mind of God Himself, we meet the "platonic/ideal" visions of Adam, Even, Lot's Wife, St. Augustine, the Devil, and many others. At the trial, we witness some very serious discussions on the nature of good and evil, as some expert witnesses are brought along. This is a real mesmorizer,a book that should last a very long time! The ending may be a slight disappointment, but given the circumstances, is as fair as one could expect.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting at first but putters out.......2004-02-23

I really enjoyed Towing Jehovah. However, Blameless in Abaddon does not live up to the same standards as Towing.

For me, it bogged down in the middle. I think I got tired of all the satire based on biblical figures being sexually depraved. The trial also was just too slow for me. I understand the need to show all the evidence but it was just too overwhelmingly boring.

If you are interested in religious philosophy it is probably worth the read. I was looking for an interesting book that made me think a little and was just happy that I was able to finish it.

        Product Description

In early 3061, Prince Victor Steiner-Davion returned from the Clan homeworlds triumphant -- but to an Inner Sphere that was radically different. The entire Ghost Bear population had relocated to the Inner Sphere; the St. Ives Compact was under siege; Katrina Steiner-Davion was sitting on the throne of New Avalon. Even with the overwhelming threat of the Clan invasion defeated, the Inner Sphere is still poised precariously between peace and war. Who will light the spark that will set BattleMechs® marching and worlds aflame once more? Drawing on information from five scenario packs, seven sourcebooks and more than a dozen novels, Shattered Sphere represents the ultimate guide to the people and places of BattleTech, as seen through the eyes of the characters who live there. Offering a brief, comprehensive history of the universe and an in-depth look at events from the Truce of Tukayyid through early 3062, this update is a must for any BattleTech fan. Shattered Sphere also includes detailed maps showing the current state of the Inner Sphere and the Clans.

4 out of 5 stars Good timeline update sourcebook for BT.......2003-07-05

Following his victory over the Clans in the Twilight of the Clans novel series, Victor Steiner-Davion returned home expecting to be hailed triumphant. Instead he found himself as a man without a country, as his throne had been usurped by his murderous, devious sister Katherine. Though throne-less, Victor salvages some power by being appointed Precentor Martial of Comstar and Commander of the Star League military. This sourcebook is presented as a briefing from Victor's top intel agent as an update on the present doings among the Inner Sphere realms, the Periphery, and the Clans. Including a nice military review of the Lyran and Davion halves of the former FedCom over which Victor had ruled, including unit loyalties and deployments, this book gives a good feeling of the major powers for each other as well as their internal assessments.

This is a nicely presented sourcebook that allows a good continuation of a Battletech campaign in this time of turmoil before the FedCom civil war (when Katherine finally got hers) and the Word of Blake Jihad (though the WoB has already recaptured Terra and begun their buildup). There are many hints dropped of things that came later, proving the well-developed course of events that FASA had planned. For collectors and players alike, this book serves as a good game aid.

        4 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2002-12-08

To many the BattleTech world is some useless back story to a universe of killer robots. Think again. This volume along with dozens of others offers a rich sci-fi universe rivaling that of Star Trek in complexity. Politics, combat, game scenarios and technology are dished out by the ton in this universe. This reference provides valuable information on the novel storyline.

5 out of 5 stars Great source of info for new and old BattleTech fans!.......2001-02-12

Having followed the BattleTech universe on and off for many years, I was pleasantly surprised to find this well-written supplement. I was a bit behind the times but Shattered Sphere did a brilliant job of filling me in. The rebirth of the Star League, the destruction of Clan Smoke Jaguar, Task Force Serpent and Bulldog, the end of the Clan invasion, Sun-Tzu Liao's using SLDF peacekeepers to help him absorb the St. Ives Compact, and the Fall of Terra to the Word of Blake are just a few storylines touched on within these pages. Maps, character bios, and mission briefings all help to make the reader think they are reading a real secret report about the status of the Inner Sphere. Thanks to this book I am once again collecting BattleTech novels and sourcebooks.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Information.......2000-09-06

This book clearly explains the current situation in the Inner Sphere. Each of the Great Houses, Clans, and ComStar is given a good once-over that explains role and recent history. Although it could give a bit more information and the art is a bit so-so, it is a great resource for both new players and grizzled veterans.

5 out of 5 stars Extra Extra read all about it........2000-08-07

I have been reading most of the newer novels that have been coming out about the inner sphere's attack on the clans. I had gotten this book before I got to the novels. It's not as dramatic as the novels, but it is an excellent sorce to sum up the history that occured in them.

For the seasoned vets, who have played since 3025 or 3050 before all of the new advances, its a great way to catch up on what's going on. And if your new to the game, it gives a good starting point if you are ever interested in following any further.

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have, but where's the rest?.......2002-05-09

This book is awesome in its scope taking place pretty far in humanities future. It's the second book in the series. In the first book, a gravitational control experiment on Pluto wakes up alien machinery which steals the Earth through an artificial black hole and begins dismantling the other planets for its own purposes. It's humanties first glimpse of FTL travel, and follows the desperate struggle of those left behind to survive and halt the aliens progress towards transforming the solar system, all the while trying to duplicate the feat.

This book picks up with the efforts of the humans left behind to find and retrieve the Earth from the alien menace. It also follows the struggle of the people of Earth who find themselves in an entirely new system, with hundreds of stars and planets and ravenous alien life form/machines bent on exploiting all life and resources of the Earth. Not to mention the mysterious "enemy" that consumes all life, that has located Earths new home.

The book ends just as things start to get REALLY good, and there has yet to be another book to finish off this story, and it's been quite a while now. So - Where's the Rest? If you don't buy it, put the series on your "watch" list and when the next one comes out - get them all!

4 out of 5 stars Shattered Series as well.......2002-04-29

Second in the series but (I must admit at the begining) surely not planned as last in the story. Earth "stolen" to alien Multisystem after gravitic experiment has triggered on wheel-like superstrucure burried deep into Moon. In the second book we can watch Earth, NaPurHab (crazy Naked Purpure Habitat) and Terra Nova ship in Multisystem strugging to survive among COREs and SCOREs - alien objects smashing nearly anything what get into their path or into collision course with any planet they guarding.
This book is one of the true hard SF with all hi-tech stuff and of course some future-stuff tech. You can find here some psychological background of main characters also, but there is also bad side. The plot is moving to slowly from the beginning and reader have to wait nearly till the end of the book for some real action. Everything before is only "getting data, sorting data, making some kind of hypothesis etc..." ocassionaly inset by short flashes about Charonians Heritage Memory or Adversary thinking.
The end is not "The End" the way we would expecting it. It seems to me as small stop before next volume which should be great conclusion of this story. May be establishing something like relationship between humans and Charonians like it is stated on last two pages of Shattered Sphere book.
Calculated together - very good book for those who like SF, but you have to expect, that there is no strong end. I hope there will be third book soon and I will be able to get one copy to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Buyer beware (But still buy it ;).......2002-03-15

This book, like its predecessor, is some of the best science fiction that I've ever had the privelege to read.

Unfortunately, the author leaves the reader hanging, waiting for a sequel to tie up all sorts of loose ends (intentionally, no doubt). The author has not, however, published the third book in the series.

It's been a 10 year wait so far. Only buy this book if you are willing to subject yourself to the heartache of needing to look for new Anderson every time you walk into a bookstore, but find nothing other than continuation of lesser men's work (Asimov, Lucas, etc).

        5 out of 5 stars A very good sci-fi book.......2001-04-07

This series (The Hunted Earth) is amazing!

Without giving out too much spoilers, the novel takes place in the year 2400+, the Earth is stolen from the Solar System, and the Hunted Earth series (The Ring of Charon, and the Shattered Sphere) covers the efforts and stories of the people left in the Solar System (on the Moon, Mars, Pluto, etc.) and the people of Earth.

I think one of the unique things about this book is that the novel jumps from one person's story to another. The perspective isn't just from one main character, but many. Roger Allen MacBride-Allen does a great job of introducing these characters, showing their challenges, and then very convincingly details how these people rise to solve them.

Specifically, the "Shattered Sphere" concentrates on the aftermath of Earth's Abduction, and the ensuing struggle of the people of Earth and the remaining people of the Solar System to get back at the alien abductors.

The book has a great story development, and it's one that I've re-read a couple of times.

I sincerely hope that Roger MacBride Allen makes a sequel to the "Shattered Sphere".

        5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss this!.......1999-04-19

This is the sequel to The Ring of Charon, and excellent science fiction. Though The Ring of Charon had some of the most horrendus cover art I've ever seen, it was an excellent book, with good characterization (though I wish he'd concentrate more on one character). The Shattered Sphere is great, and I can't wait to read the next in the series.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing and overrated........2007-09-15

This book was all pretty pictures and pretty bland recipes. It is overpriced, overrated, and distinctly inferior to other vegan cookbooks that may not have the cachet of a trendy restaurant but provide more value for money. I gave this coffee table book away. (the layout is difficult to work with if you want to actually cook with it.)

                      5 out of 5 stars Total aloha!.......2007-09-11

If you can't make it to the unbelievably delicious restaurant in Hawaii, this cookbook is a great consolation prize. I love all the recipes and the gorgeous pictures. They are fresh, nutritious, and not hard. I haven't seen another cookbook like it.
