4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-09-09

It is hard to talk about "Cured by Fire" in casual overview because it touches on so many native feelings about life, death, faith, suffering and survival. It is the story of two good men, who, through a series of horrible events, endure difficult tests. One falls apart relatively early and the other, ensconced in his own "temple" of faith, only turns bitter at the very end. By that time the other man, severly disfigured and by now a gutter drunk, has turned a corner and comforts the dying and formerly faithful man to find a peace of his own. It is a story about growing up, heartbreak and hard living, woven together in clear-eyed flashbacks that bring the avid reader to a white-hot, emotional finale. A stirring work on every count.

4 out of 5 stars Trial by fire.......2003-11-17

McLaurin's eloquent novel of loss and redemption begins with two homeless men, Lewis and Elbridge, on a hillside near Seattle, waiting for one of them, Elbridge, to die. And it ends (I'm not ruining any surprises) with Elbridge's death and Lewis' first steps back into the world.

In between is the story, told in alternate voices - first person for Elbridge, third for Lewis, of how the destinies of these two Southern men so far from home become intertwined.

Lewis and Elbridge have little in common besides an impoverished boyhood, a hideous tragedy and fire. Lewis is a white boy from North Carolina, son of a drunk, who often ends up in foster care with a viciously abusive church-going woman. From the age of 8 he has worked the tobacco harvest, graduating from barn to fields at age 11. Heat waves rise from the page with McLaurin's descriptions of this backbreaking work and the people who do it. Lewis' fellow croppers are all black: "Sweat had dried on their faces, and their forearms and hands were caked with tobacco gum."

Elbridge is the son of a part-Indian white woman who ran off in his infancy and a black man he never knew. Raised in a Kentucky mountain hollow by his grandfather, a retired coal miner, he suffers the taunts of his schoolfellows with a bewildered fatalism. But home to Elbridge is a place of simple warmth where you can almost smell the greens melting down in bacon grease.

Elbridge's needs are met by the garden, the fishing and his grandfather. And when he was 12 Elbridge received a shotgun. His grandfather warns him, "It can kill you like a snake if you let it. Don't ever forget that. But it can feed you too. And it can free you from the world. Maybe just for an hour or so, but it can free you."

Lewis, too, receives this gift of freedom, which makes his isolation an idyll rather than a prison. But suddenly he gets his growth and the "white trash" outcast becomes a football star - and much in demand by the world, so much so his only escape is into the woods with his rifle.

No spurts of growth for Elbridge. Instead his grandfather dies and he's forced off the rented land. Wandering, he finds religion. "I kept reading my Bible, and I found out I was invisible. ...My mixed blood was only on the outside, and the real me was inside and pure as the first snow....I was a temple."

Both men establish families and lose them, which is the crux of the story. For Lewis, tragedy is a taunt from a vengeful god and he dares God to kill him and is, very nearly, killed in a fire. For Elbridge the fire is the tragedy which takes his life but leaves him still walking the earth, following God's will in a search for meaning.

McLaurin's early chapters are the strongest, immersing the reader in the heat and earthy smells of the south, the all-encompassing loneliness of a child, the petty meanness and wisdom of adults. While the beauty of the writing never flags, the book's themes of self-deception, blame and eventual self-knowledge and acceptance seem simplistic and weaker than the fine prose they're couched in. Still, this beautifully written book shows a strong knowledge of, and sympathy with, the human heart.

From the supplier: The reform of the workers' compensation industry is beginning to experience some benefits, such as reduced costs and better employee benefits. Employers have saved approximately $1 billion from 1991 to 1994. The combined ratio of claims cost and overhead versus premiums for 1993 was 109.5, and significant decrease from over 117 from 1983 to 1992. Also, increased prosecution of insurance fraud and increased workplace safety can help decrease costs and insurance rates even further.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Conclusion.......2001-03-15

This second 'book' in the River into Darkness series would not rightly be called a sequel. The two books are in truth one, split most likely for some reason of publication. They are both exceptional books, but in no way are they stand-alone. I recommend them enthusiastically, but buy both.

They are as one 'book' the sequel to the Moontide and Magic Rising series (World Without End/Sea Without Shore), and are completely stand-alone from that other series.

This second book grabs the mystery right where the first left off, and for those who felt the first book lacked enough 'magic' to make it fantasy, this book attempts to add more--though just a pinch. As in the Moontide and Magic Rising series, this book delves more into the idea of 'other worlds close at hand yet infinitely far away', and even gives us a glimpse of these worlds.

The characters become more ambiguous; much to the appreciation of this reviewer, who found an entirely new and realistic depth lent to them. The villain is given even more humanity, and more justification for his 'evil', one of the heroines has more suspicion cast upon her own motives, and the entire plot thickens.

I believe Russell is something of an original in the contemporary fantasy scene; I read a review somewhere comparing his world to the world of Sherlock Holmes. I think this a very apt comparison. Russell's Europe is a slightly dark and gothic Europe, with the pomp and manners of the court spread throughout society, yet also with mysteries beyond mortal ken springing up in the most unlikely of places, and strange ties binding everything together.

I would recommend this book whole-heartedly to anyone who enjoys a good mystery, with twists and turns perpetrated by believable and passionate characters. There is something of a dearth of action in these books, and the 'magic' is incredibly subtle, but to me this merely adds to the flavor of the world, in a wonderfully pleasing manner.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable book..........2000-02-12

I read the Compass of the Soul and its predecessor in under four days. This story was more important to me than sleep, as I stayed up late each night to find out what would happen. The characters were layered and believable; their motivations complex. I will disagree with a previous reviewer, just a difference of opinion on one point I liked her review, I appreciated the way magic was portrayed in this book. Eldrich was shown to be powerful through others' deference, through subtle aspects of light and shadow, in essence through his intense presence. If magic would have been displayed more openly, I think it would have detracted from the mood that the author was trying to set--the sense of mystery. I believe this choice was made to underscore the fact that magic was soon to pass out of the world. Or to use an illustration in the book...the tide of magic was ebbing. Ultimately, I enjoyed reading a book where the author didn't write to the lowest common denominator, and assumed his readers could think.

4 out of 5 stars Chasing the Fox that isn*t.............1999-06-27

I have eagerly awaited the second half of this set, only to suffer the same frustration as before. Sean Russell paints his Georgian-Victorian world with much detail, a world where magic is slowly, inexorably dying. His fault is that he almost never shows that magic. Eldritch, the last true mage--ever distinct from mundane humans--is quite long lived, has disturbing dreams, yet this appears to be the extent of anything we the reader can tell. Much of the book is taken with Erasmus Flattery, Eldritch*s former student, in pursuing Anna, who would resurrect the magical arts, and in Eldritch*s pursuit of him. The undercurrent of *other worlds* runs thru the book; as in Sea Without a Shore, there is a brief glimpse of that realm, along with one of a Hiroshiman cataclysm. What's difficult is that up unto the very end, the magic arts are firmly kept *offstage*, it is difficult to understand what everyone is seeking for, or warning against. A map would have been useful as well.

5 out of 5 stars Good writing, characters you care about, a page-turner.......1998-10-30

Russell's fictional world feels a lot like the 19th century England of Sherlock Holmes. It feels familiar rather than fantastical, yet great and deep mysteries lie just below the surface. Russell draws characters with depth and breadth, people we care about. Even his villains are real people for whom we have sympathy. Indeed, it is difficult to decide which side you are on in this centuries-old struggle. I have diffculty putting any Sean Russell book down. If you like his others, you will like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not up to Russell's previous level.......1998-08-24

I, for one, eagerly awaited the release of this book. Russel does a workman like job drawing this preqel to a conclusion in his usual and enjoyable style. While an excellent book, I found that this was more formulaic, as if he was somehow hampered by having both the beginning and the ending predetermined by his previous works. There was less of the mystery and intrigue we have become accustomed to: the reader actually knows what is going to happen! However, Russell certainly provides some additional answers and background on the world, characters, and mages he has created.

The story is intriguing, keeps you guessing the whole way

plot, some things just don't add up. But if you can look past
                                that, it's an enjoyable read.

First published in 1982, The Silver Palate Cookbook was an instant smash. It offered 350 stylish but easy recipes that reflected and helped cement America's burgeoning interest in quality cooking. It acquainted cooks with "gourmet" ingredients, just beginning to appear in our markets. And it helped many a host to shine.

The collection, whose recipes range from hors d'oeuvres to sweets, now arrives in a 25th-anniversary edition, which reproduces the original text and adds color photos throughout, often dropped into the text pages. All the old favorites, including Marinated Eggplant Livia, Chicken Marbella, Blanquette de Vaeu, and Blackberry Mousse are present, along with information about ingredients, menus, quotes, and other asides--all the things that help make the book such a pleasure. It's hard to imagine a cook--and especially one who entertains--not owning Silver Palate. This printing, which includes a retrospective foreword, offers more satisfaction still while reiterating the reasons for the book's enduring appeal. --Arthur Boehm

Amazon.com Exclusive: A Brief History of The Silver Palate Cookbook by Sheila Lukins
Twenty five years ago seems like the distant past but we still make ratatouille the same way and who would have ever dreamed that so many people would say to us, "I had Chicken Marbella at a dinner party last week and I just loved it." It took slight madness to open our little store in 1977. Florence Fabricant was writing an article on the renaissance of Columbus Avenue, where our shop was opening, we needed a name, she was on a deadline and called and said, "What are you calling your store?" We didn't know. "Why don't you call it The Silver Palate," she said. We loved it. It took sheer bravery in 1982 to write our book--who would need to buy food in our store any longer once they had all of our recipes? But that never happened for one hour. In fact, it helped us go national even further. Here we are, 25 years later, celebrating with a brand new edition of our book that finally highlights our recipes with vibrant color photographs. I once picked up the phone and someone on the other end said, "Sheila, I just baked the Decadent Chocolate Cake and my cake doesn't look like the drawing." I didn't know how to reply. I assured them the taste made up for the looks. It's bittersweet, but those problems are solved forever. While different, the color adds an exciting new dimension to the cookbook that has been a treasure to so many cooks for two and a half decades. Julee and I had a fantasy food partnership and the publication of this book has given us the opportunity to spend some wonderful time together.

When the weather warms us up, there is no more welcome beginning to a meal that a light swirl of noodles tangled up with crisp spring vegetables. Follow this amusing starter with a succulent roast leg of lamb, the meat we all long for in the spring. Serve our Swiss Gratin Potatoes and some haricots verts alongside. A delightful finale to this springtime luncheon is a moist carrot cake with cream cheese frosting or a delicate strawberry mousse. --Sheila Lukins and Julee Rosso Miller

I recently heard an interview with the two authors of this book on the Diane Ream show on National Public Radio. I could not resist purchasing the book after hearing about its history, not to mention hearing all of the phone in callers! So many people called in to share stories of their life and experiences with this book.
I have never seen the original, but this 25th anniversary edition has lovely photographs and the recipes are as fabulous as those described on the radio that inspired me to purchase it in the first place.
Though some of the recipes are a tad complicated, I still think it is the PERFECT cookbook for a newly moved out daughter or a newlywed. It is one that will be sure to be with you a lifetime.

Food is my passion. I love nothing better than thinking about it; shopping for it in big open markets; preparing it; serving it to others; eating it myself; writing about it and reading inspired cookbooks. Alas, too few cookbooks are inspired and fewer still fire my enthusiasm like the first pair written by Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins.

The original "Silver Palate" and this "Good Times Cookbook" are my kitchen bibles, along with Mark Bittman's "The Best Recipes In The World."

"Good Times" is an essential culinary reference for anyone who delights in celebrating the seasons with good food, thoughtfully prepared. Long before "eating in season" became the foodie anthem, Rosso and Lukins theme-inspired-menus for "Rainy Day & Sundays;" "Siestas, Sunsets and Stargazing" and "Daffodil Weekend," gamely encouraged us to do just that.

How better to celebrate Halloween than with smoky pumpkin soup and Old Fashion carmelcorn? Mother's Day is the perfect excuse to whip up lemon chicken. Bring in the New Year with a golden caviar soufflé. Mark your favorite winter holiday with Christmas goose, three onion casserole and baked kumquats and parsnips. There are thousands of other holiday cookbooks out there, but none as original, inspiring and downright do-able as "Good Times."

5 out of 5 stars I agree, one of the best cookbooks in print........2005-08-04

Just for three or four of the recipes alone it's worth it, but overall the blueprints of all content for various occasions bring uncomplicated flare and quality to the kitchen. A kitchen must-have.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks in print.......2002-12-15

The follow up to the Silver Palate Cookbook in some ways even exceeds its predecessor. All recipes are organized by season, focusing on the best quality ingredients available. Truly a great cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook.......2002-12-12

This is the most used book in my kitchen. I love the seasonal approach, and always look at the book for dinner and entertaining ideas at the start of each season.

Some of my favorites are Bobbies Roast Chicken (ginger, mustard, lemon, mmmm!), June's Apple Crisp, some of the unusual and festive winter vegetables dishes (how about Brussels sprouts with maple and walnut vinaigrette or the Ruby Radishes?).

Christmas is very special indeed with the Red and Green Christmas Salad (spinach, avocado and pomegranates) with Warm Champagne Vinegar Dressing.

Buy it, you will feel inspired to be more creative with your cooking!

Yes, it does say miniature in the information, I just didn't notice it before I ordered this book. If you're thinking of purchasing this book, please check the size in the description so you know you're getting a very small (about 3 inch square) book. Wish someone had pointed that out to me before I bought this. And yes, I should have been more careful, and will be next time.

3 out of 5 stars Wrong chicken, wrong book.......2002-06-21

The other reviewer is talking about The Silver Palate Cookbook, I believe, not this specialty miniature dessert-only book. There may be prunes but I doubt there are chickens between the covers of what is essentially a stocking-stuffer.

4 out of 5 stars Prunes can do wonders!.......2000-12-29

I had the Chicken Marbella over the holidays and it was wonderful. Full of flavor and the chicken was very moist. It consists of capers, prunes and spanish olives. This dish can be served hot or at room temperature. I would highly recommend this cookbook because the recipes are easy and very tasty.

                                        Book Description

The Busy Cook's Diet and Nutrition Guide to The Silver Palate Cookbooks provides per-serving nutrition facts for calories, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol, and diabetic exchanges for each of the recipes in The Silver Palate Cookbook. This nutrition reference guide is meant to be used along with The Silver Palate Cookbook, copyright B) 1982 by Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins. The recipes from this cookbook are NOT included in this guide.

The secret to happy, healthy eating lies in three words: balance, moderation, and variety. And knowing what is in the food you eat puts you in control of all three. The WHAT'S IN IT? nutrition guide enables and encourages the health-minded cook to use the recipes in this classic cookbook to his or her heart's content - and health. Armed with accurate, nutrition facts, you can cook any recipe you choose with a free mind, planning your overall menu and daily total consumption with balance and moderation as your goal. No food is, by definition, "bad" food - a thoughtfully planned, well-balanced diet can include any food, and all recipes. Boeuf a la Bourguignonne, a cheese omelet, a slice of chocolate cake - savor them all without qualms. When you know how many calories and fat each contains, you can balance and moderate the rest of the food you eat during the course of a meal, a day, or a week. The WHAT'S IN IT? guide gives you the ability to build a meal around any enticing recipe, whatever its nutritional components, and still keep carbohydrates, protein, and fat in a safe, healthy balance - and keep down calories. And if you go overboard one day, the data in the WHAT'S IN IT? guide will help you make up for it the next.
