4 out of 5 stars Great people sharing memories, in English and Eskimo!!!!.......1999-10-01

This if a wonderful print of the families that once lived on King Island, Alaska. The stories and pictures presented can't be found anywhere else. This collection of memories and legends are printed in English on the left side, and in Eskimo on the right side of the book. Reading these stories gives one the ideas of how they lived, the great oral tradition, and how the language of the King Islanders look on paper. In the back are the original King Island family names, with the original pronunciations. This is a really good book!! (for kids and parents). I just wish that there were more of the stories and more of the pictures.

Each fairy tale starts in English, then slowly MORPHS INTO MANDARIN CHINESE

Begin with LEVEL 1! This book will teach your child 20+ new Mandarin Chinese words in a fun, fast, and truly easy way! Here s how it works...

        * An English word in the fairy tale is circled with its Mandarin Chinese translation in the column.

        * From that moment forward, the Chinese word (written in red) will be used throughout the rest of the story... and it will be used again and again in context!

        * As the fairy tale progresses, more and more Chinese words are added like a big language train gathering words along the way.

        * The new words are repeated throughout the story helping to reinforce understanding.

        * By the end of the book, the child has easily learned 20+ new Chinese words in context!

It's easy! And remember... each level uses words taught from previous levels...so you ll want to continue with the next levels. By the end of the last level, the fairy tale will be written almost entirely in Chinese - and it will be easy to understand EVERYTHING!

4 out of 5 stars Good collection, but...........2002-12-09

This is a very good early collection of stories done in the Gullah vernacular commonly found among Blacks in the Charleston SC-Savannah Ga. area. However, Gonzales did his job a bit too well in that his phonetic recitations of these tales are almost indecipherable to those not famimiar with the dialect. Folklorists may also be interested to know that some of these tales make reappearances in Joel Chandler Harris' "Uncle Remus" tales (which came out at around the same time, so it may be the other way around) and some forty years later in the collections of the Black folklorist Zora Neale Hurston. But either way, if you have the patience, give it a try. BUT BE WARNED-Once you get the flow of the dialougue, these stories were written from a very patronizing point of view in the early 1900s and the politically correct may want to take some heart medicine before reading this.

This book is a classic of Gullah culture. I've been looking for a copy ever since I taught at an historical Black college in Savannah, GA, five years ago and was introduced first hand to Gullah.

                  Book Description

In the early 1970s, Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian exploded on to the comics scene. Writer Roy Thomas teamed with a young artist named Barry Smith, and together the two mapped out some of the most stirring and memorable Conan adventures to come along since those written by Howard himself. Over the course of their 24 issue run together, Thomas and Smith defined Conan for a generation of comics readers, and now those stories are collected here in a series of trade paperbacks. Featuring completely remastered color and text corrections, and containing material not available for nearly thirty years, these books are the perfect companions to the upcoming all-new Conan series from Dark Horse.

5 out of 5 stars Relive the magic!.......2007-09-28

All of the volumes in this series are masterful. These are the comics I grew up with, but with them being re-colored, they've never looked so vibrant. The artwork is brilliant, but I'm a Buscema man through and through. Roy Thomas, what can you say about this relentless teller of tales? He's a writing demon, and he kept pumping out those amazing stories issue after issue. If he wasn't re-working the genius of Howard's original tales, he was twisitng and bending any work he could (legally too I might add) to fit the Conan canon. Thank you Dark Horse for bringing these savage tales of the marauding barbarian back to life. At the back of each volume is an afterword by Roy Thomas talking about those halycon days of the Conan comic and the creative processes. For those of you who have never read a Conan comic, you're in for a treat. For those who have, I need not say more.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-08-02

Another nicely put together collection of the Thomas and Smith Conan stories. The adaptation of Howard's Rogues in the House is actually pretty decent, with a very well done man-ape guy.

Conan has more problems than that, though, including a rather large Spider-God. Problems in the desert, problems in city. Again, the afterword by Thomas is interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Well Worth It!.......2005-09-14

I thoroughly enjoyed every story in this
                  collection. Well-written and loaded with
adventures that grab you and won't let go
until the very end. Great reading for those
of us who are Conan fans.

                  4 out of 5 stars Conan continues.......2005-08-17

Anybody who likes Conan will enjoy these reprodutions of the original Marvel comic series. My only complaint is that they did not reprint the covers.

                  2 out of 5 stars An indulgence I regret.......2005-03-12

In my review of the first volume of these editions collecting the Marvel Comic series from the early seventies I mention how much I disliked the new digital coloring. Well, the second volume takes that a notch lower. I really hoped this volume would at least look as good as the last, bearable if not great. However this volume featuring the stories that first hooked me into collecting comics rather than just reading them goes from bad to horrible and all because the colorists took so many liberties that they muddled to beautiful line art into an over-wrought mess. It's so bad that upon trying to read it I just gave up after a few pages.
What were the colorists thinking? I'm not trying to insult hard work here. However, my disappointment as an artist who can't see why this was done this way is left with nothing but questions for both the colorists and the editors who allowed this to see print. I expect better from this company which I've admired for almost 20 years for risk taking and quality production when it was possible. I can think of no reason for this level of work.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Truly Roguish Adventure.......2007-05-27

Conan plays all sides and comes out on top in a story that reminds me of the film Yojimbo. John Maddox Roberts writes great Conan tales and this is one of them. The atmosphere is tense and rife with intrigue. Each of the rivaling parties is clearly defined with believable motives. The story, as it evolves, will keep you guessing. Great character development as people emerge from two-dimensional figures to fully fleshed out personalities with distinct traits and mannerisms, making the world this story is set in very believable. The story takes place entirely in one town, which is itself a character of the story and its geography figures prominently in the story. If you are looking for an involved tale in a detailed setting, this is a good story for you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent blend of genres.......2005-08-16

This Conan adventure finds the Cimmerian looking for a mysterious artifact, a la The Maltese Falcon, and cleaning up a gang plagued town, as in Kurosawa's Yojimbo. This eccentric blending of several genres works quite well making it one of the best of the numerous pastiches. Roberts works in all of the threads and comes up a with a cohesive adventure. Highly recommended for fans of Conan, Hammett, Kurosawa or Leone.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the time.......2003-04-26

The previous reviewers were correct in noting that the book is derived heavily from "A Fistful of Dollars". Although it must be pointed out that "A Fistful of Dollars" was based on a 1961 B&W Kurosawa movie "Yojimbo" (The Bodyguard).

Back to the book, once you placed the storyline - there weren't any surprises but it was good seeing Conan in a somewhat more "brainy" role rather than relying on his physical prowess...

5 out of 5 stars Not Just the Maltese Falcon.......2001-04-28

The reader from Kansas City is correct in seeing "A Fistful of Dollars" behind "Conan the Rogue." The joke is that "Fistful," like "Rogue," is inspired by "Red Harvest" -- a novel by the author of "The Maltese Falcon," Dashiell Hammett!

John Maddox Roberts does a very good job of smooshing at least two detective novels' plots into a new sword-and-sorcery story. He handles Conan himself well, too.

Since Tor doesn't mention Conan's actual creator, let's remember that Robert E. Howard was writing for the pulps at the same time as Hammett, which adds to Roberts's in-joke.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Fistful of Coins..........2000-05-27

One of the other reviewers compared this book to "The Maltese Falcon" -- I'm thinking it's much closer to "A Fistful of Dollars." Anyone who thinks of Conan as a musclebound oaf should read this novel and watch Conan play the different elements of the town against each other. Part of the fun of the book for me was watching Conan maneuver people around, always to his advantage, along with all the signature Conan action. Highly, highly recommended.

Long before he entered politics, when he was just in his early 20s, South Dakotan George McGovern flew 35 bomber missions over Nazi-occupied Europe, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery under fire. Stephen Ambrose, the industrious historian, focuses on McGovern and the young crew of his B-24 bomber, volunteers all, in this vivid study of the air war in Europe.

Manufactured by a consortium of companies that included Ford Motor and Douglas Aircraft, the B-24 bomber, dubbed the Liberator, was designed to drop high explosives on enemy positions well behind the front lines--and especially on the German capital, Berlin. Unheated, drafty, and only lightly armored, the planes were dangerous places to be, and indeed, only 50 percent of their crews survived to the war's end. Dangerous or not, they did their job, delivering thousand- pound bombs to targets deep within Germany and Austria.

In his fast-paced narrative, Ambrose follows many other flyers (including the Tuskegee Airmen, the African American pilots who gave the B-24s essential fighter support on some of their most dangerous missions) as they brave the long odds against them, facing moments of glory and terror alike. "It would be an exaggeration to say that the B-24 won the war for the Allies," Ambrose writes. "But don't ask how they could have won the war without it." --Gregory McNamee

                                  Book Description

Stephen Ambrose is the acknowledged dean of the historians of World War II in Europe. In three highly acclaimed, bestselling volumes, he has told the story of the bravery, steadfastness, and ingenuity of the ordinary young men, the citizen soldiers, who fought the enemy to a standstill -- the band of brothers who endured together.

The very young men who flew the B-24s over Germany in World War II against terrible odds were yet another exceptional band of brothers, and, in The Wild Blue, Ambrose recounts their extraordinary brand of heroism, skill, daring, and comradeship with the same vivid detail and affection.

Ambrose describes how the Army Air Forces recruited, trained, and then chose those few who would undertake the most demanding and dangerous jobs in the war. These are the boys -- turned pilots, bombardiers, navigators, and gunners of the B-24s -- who suffered over 50 percent casualties.

With his remarkable gift for bringing alive the action and tension of combat, Ambrose carries us along in the crowded, uncomfortable, and dangerous B-24s as their crews fought to the death through thick black smoke and deadly flak to reach their targets and destroy the German war machine. Twenty-two-year-old George McGovern, who was to become a United States senator and a presidential candidate, flew thirty-five combat missions (all the Army would allow) and won the Distinguished Flying Cross. We meet him and his mates, his co-pilot killed in action, and crews of other planes. Many went down in flames.

As Band of Brothers and Citizen Soldiers portrayed the bravery and ultimate victory of the American soldiers from Normandy on to Germany, The Wild Blue makes clear the contribution these young men of the Army Air Forces stationed in Italy made to the Allied victory.

This book is not about the men and boys who flew the B 24 it is a book about Mc Govern. Reading the book sort of makes you feel like he was the only man in the war. I purchased the book to read about all the men. The author could have even shown some about other men that did basicaly the same that became famous: Kennedy, Jimmy Stewert and others. He focused only on McGovern and I certinaly wonder how much he paid to get Stephen to write this book or is Stephen that much in love with Mc Govern. I can not stand the man now and will not ever knowingly buy another book of his.

5 out of 5 stars The Wild Blue .......2007-04-21

The Wild Blue is about the young men who flew the B-24 over Germany in World War 2 against all odds. Mr. Ambrose describes the heroism, courage, and skill with a lot of detail. He successfully makes you feel like you are in the great lumbering bomber in the hostile skies over Germany. He also describes how the Army Air Force (only after the war were the army and air force separate) recruited, trained and then chose those few that would undertake the most dangerous job in the war. The pilots, bombardiers, navigators and, the gunners of the B-24s suffered a 50 percent casualty rate.

This book follows the lives of ten men from different towns and different backgrounds and watches them come together and form a team. The trust was important because up in the skies of Germany it was good to know that someone had your back. I believe that Mr. Ambrose captures that perfectly. He takes the reader along in the crowded, uncomfortable planes as the men aboard fought to the death through smoke and terrifying flack to reach their industrial targets in the Rhineland. Their goal was to destroy the German war machine.

5 out of 5 stars The Heroic Tales.......2007-03-30

Stephen Ambrose's The Wild Blue: the Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s over Germany tells the heroic tales of the B-24 Liberators and their crews from the 15th Army Air Force in Italy flying over Nazi Germany in World War II. The Wild Blue begins with the stories behind each crewman who will eventually fly aboard the "Dakota Queen" and a few crewmen who will fly aboard other B-24s. The stories behind the crewmen are a very nice addition to the book as it is the crewmen who make the majestic B-24s fly and fight. The reader actually gets to meet George McGovern who eventually flies the "Dakota Queen". McGovern was born on July 19, 1922, and was attending his second year at Dakota Wesleyan when he heard that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. The combat stories are complete to the detail of what it is like to fly over Nazi Germany against flak and the occasional fighter, what it is like to be shot down, and what it is like to watch a fellow B-24 get shot down. Ambrose was able to give this amount of detail because of his interviews with approximately fifty B-24 crewmen and their families. Without those interviews, this book would be bland and very unreal. But it is enjoyable and very real. The Wild Blue is a book that I would re-read and recommend to those who are interested in history, World War II, aircraft, or to those who just want to know the feeling of being taken up into a B-24 and flown over Nazi Germany.

Mr. Ambrose wrote a unabashed tribute to George McGovern, too bad he tried to pass it off as a story about something else.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A SOLID READ - IF NOT THE AUTHOR'S BEST.......2006-07-16

While I enjoyed this one, it certainly was not the author's best work. It did draw attention to a group of very brave men, the B-24 crew members in the European Theater, which was good as this group and this plane is often overlooked. It did seem to me though that the author, on one side was trying to write a biography of George McGovern, or if he was trying to cover the air war during the last part of WWII. I did enjoy his trade mark technique of telling the stories of different men who participated, but he would always go back to McGovern. Perhaps if he had stuck to one or the other the book would have had more of an impact. Parts of this work did drag and were rather repetative. On the other hand, the author did not try to over dramatize McGovern's part in the war. The work was well crafted and you certainy would not waste your time in reading it. I suppose it is not quite fare to compare this work with other works by this author. After all, no one bats a thousand all the time. Overall, recommend this one with reservations. It is about very brave young men and we do need to know as much about them as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner by Meluch.......2004-11-09

                                  Totally agree with above reviewer.

Meluch does not give you nice little packages tied with bows. What you get is gritty, edgy political wheelings and dealings, 'villians' with whom you'd like to shake hands, pretty and complicated heros driven by their own ghosts and unbeatable egos, as well as a world of technology both complex and yet recognisable.

The story of Queen's Squadron is all that is dark and violent but still manages to reveal hints of the soft human heart beating within. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Another Must Read From Rebecca Meluch.......1998-07-31

Queen's Squadron is not for the squeamish. My first wife threw the book at me because of the violence in one scene. I love this book though. It is a tragedy and platonic love story at heart. One of the main characters is a humanoid who is the last remaining member of a species of truthsayers who cannot be lied to. His species has been killed off and he is the truthsayer for the immortal emperor. He is also in charge of the emperor's torture colony. He falls in love with one of his charges but that does not stop him from performing his duty. Rebecca Meluch does not give you silly large victories but the road her characters travel and the pain and difficulties they undergo make the small victories triumphant. Also if you are into the technical aspects of Sci-Fi she creates a faster than light ship that has as logical a scientific basis as anything else ever written or theorized about. If you like complex, well written, and rewarding novels then you should read ever! ything this woman has written including a short story in the anthology Women at War.

Donald Gazzaniga, diagnosed with congestive heart failure, was on a waiting list for a heart transplantthe only effective medical treatment. Urged by his doctor to keep his sodium intake down under 1,500-2,000 mg. a day, Don headed for the kitchen and went to work. Aware that cutting table salt from your diet is the barest beginning of a true low-sodium menu, Don devised recipes that were 70% lower in sodium than those in other low-sodium cookbooks. The result? Dons name was removed from the transplant list; his doctors believe that his diet played a significant role. The No-Salt, Lowest-Sodium Cookbook contains: Hundreds of good-tasting, easy-to-make recipesA 28-day low-sodium menu planner Advice on finding low-sodium prepared foods, eating in restaurants, etc. Accurate sodium content of every ingredient and of the total servings Substitutes for high-sodium flavorings, and information on other taste-improving substances.

Physicians will talk "low sodium" but not really how and this book helps that. My husband was dx with severe CHF with possible transplant looming up within the year. A low sodium diet became my contribution to his treatment. He also needed a biventricular pump and various medications but my guess is that the diet changes helped an additional 10-20% and when your heart function is that poor, all the percentages add up. This book helped educate us both especially during the first few months when we were stunned by the change in our reality. I especially like knowing the sodium content of things; so although we used that book a lot initially, I need it less now. Some recipes suffer from...lack of salt...but one learns to deal with it. I find the more acidic the food (tomato, lemon juice, vinegar) the less likely we notice or care that it is low sodium. My husband (almost a year later) is also a success story. His heart has improved (as viral cardiomyopathies can sometimes do) but I believe all the treatment gave his heart the ability to recover. But, regardless of the cause of one's heart failure, treatments that allow the heart to function better all add up. We are not as strict as Don and keep the sodium to 1600-1800 mg a day but that still requires planning and we combine low sodium cooking, no sodium baking soda and baking powder, no or low sodium commercial products (always check what "low sodium means"), spices instead of salt, and limiting any high sodium foods. We read labels, and have found commercially produced bread with 0 mg of sodium.

4 out of 5 stars No-Salt, Lowest Sodium Cookbook .......2007-04-11

This collection of recipes and helpful hints on avoiding excessive intake of salt is a must have for anyone on a low sodium diet or who wants to minimize the sodium in his/her diet. As you would expect, the book has many recipes for preparing and making dishes and meals without salt and the use of low sodium foods and ingredients in place of those laced with sodium. But, in addition, there are many useful tips on such things as eating out, where it is virtually impossible to know what the nutrient values of foods are or to avoid high-sodium food. The author even has devised a scheme to deal with the fast food places (take your own bun and order the burger without condiments).
The book contains more than just recipes and menus. It includes material on substitutions of food (helpful for devising your own recipes or modifying the author's), and very helpful info on where to purchase some of the food products not commonly found in supermarkets. And, of course, there are discussions of the health benefits of reducing sodium intake and descriptions of various food staples -- including water, which was an eye-opener (yeh, in some places you gotta keep an eye on what is in the water)!
Many of the recipes are fine for those who are well-versed in the arts of the kitchen or who have time to both learn the techniques and prepare the food. But there are plenty of simple recipes that even a neophyte like me can handle. Each recipe includes a nutritional analysis of the finished product, itemizing the biggies like sodium content, cholesterol, fat (saturated and both mono- and poly-unsaturated -- but not trans fat), carbohydratesk, fiber and proteins. It also includes content amounts of calcium, potassium and iron. Sugar content is not listed and that is an unfortunate omission.
For those who have to watch what they eat and must or want to keep the sodium intake down, I think this is one of three books that are must-haves, the others being The Encyclopedia of Food Values by Corrine Netzer and the Joy of Cooking, by Rombauer & Becker. The Encyclopedia (not the paperback version) lists every conceivable nutrient in virtually any food you can think of, which makes it a helpful addition when adapting or devising recipes - but contains very little on cooking or preparation. Joy is indispensible for detailed descriptions of cooking techniques and alternative ingredients - but contains no nutritional analysis of recipes. The No-Salt, Lowest Sodium Cookbook fills the gap by providing both low sodium recipes, nutritional analyses, and some basic cooking technique information.

                                      Book Description

When a serious heart problem caused Don Gazzaniga to give up his career in communications, he was warned to keep to a diet with very little salt or other sodium. Undaunted, he discovered a way to continue enjoying the meals he loved and still keep his sodium level far below what most cardiologists feel they can expect from their patients.
The idea has led to three published books found on the kitchen shelves of thousands of grateful families dealing with congestive heart failure. First came a large general cookbook. It was followed by a baking book, and then a book of recipes for light meals and snacks. What could be next?
Before Don’s illness, he and his wife, Maureen, traveled a lot. Don’s job took him all over the globe. And wherever they went, they sought out that country’s traditional dishes. When the light-meals book was finished, Don was looking for yet another low- sodium cookbook idea. He and Maureen pulled out their collection of recipes, did their magic of making them very low on sodium, and voilà! A delicious and healthy treat for the entire family.
