I found the trilogy refreshing. It was captivating, held my interest. I couldn't wait to get to the next section, after reading the first, to see what else lay in store for Hailey, Karlee, and Paige.

Women Left Out.......1999-12-19
When the Church of England revised its calendar the editors of the calendar inlcluded only one or two post reformation women. This book is a review of women that the author thought should have consideration. It is a wonderful compilation of faithful women, some in orders, some missionaries, some artists who are larger than life. There is solid bibliography on each figure presented. Heartily recommended.

Based on a true story, a Dutch woman is caught in the nightmare of Hitler's regime when she voluntarily accompanies her six stepdaughters to Auschwitz. What transpires during and after the war exemplifies a rare courage in an extraordinary heroine.
Customer Reviews:
A book that should become a "classic" about WWII.......2007-04-17
Far Above Rubies is based on the authentic story of Tante Soof, a Dutch Jew who at a late age marries into a family with six stepdaughters. When the occupation comes in 1941 and Hitler orders all Jewish teenagers to be sent to work camps, Soof (or Sofie) refuses to let her daughters be sent away on their own, and insists on accompanying them to the work camp they are sent to. Once there she does her best to keep up their spirits and health--often going without herself, in order to give them a bit more water or food. Unfortunately she can only do so much, and when they are sent to Auschwitz, it is all she can do to keep herself alive.
I hope this book will eventually become as well-known as "The Hiding Place" and "The Diary of Anne Frank," when describing the lives of Dutch Jews during World War II. It paints a vivid picture of their daily lives, and of the atrocities performed by the German soldiers, expressed very eloquently in the words of one of the guards at Auschwitz, "Nobody will help you. Even if you do survive [Auschwitz], who's ever going to believe you?" Fortunately word got out, and we do believe her.
"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." (Proverbs 31:10) When reading Far Above Rubies, it is obvious why the author decided to tie this verse together with the story of Tante Soof. A woman more compassionate and loving would indeed be very difficult to find--a woman willing to give up her life for that of her stepdaughters, leaving behind the love of her life, in order to take care of his daughters to give him the peace of mind that at least the seven of them are together.
Armchair Interviews says: Powerful story with a powerful telling.
If you have read Anne Frank you must read Far Above Rubies.......2007-03-19
I recently read The Diary of Anne Frank with my 14 year old daughter. Anne's story leaves one with many questions about the horrors of WWII and the Holocaust. There is no better book that complements Anne Frank's story and takes one inside the terrible world of this genocide. From a teen-agers perspective Far Above Rubies is the story that brings an appreciation as to just how bad life was for the Jews. Telling your child war is bad simply does not compare to sharing the stories and experiences people went through. Far Above Rubies is much more than a story; it is a vivid education. This is a must read!
The gift of language.......2006-10-26
Not only does Cynthia Polansky tell a compelling story, her language alone is enough to entertain. Her prose is fluid and smooth, with seamless transitions. I came away from the book wanting to be a better writer myself.
Frightening truth.......2006-02-09
Reviewed by Kim Peterson for Reader Views (2/06)
When Sofie Rijnfeld marries her husband Jan, she also becomes mother to his six daughters. They share three wonderful years before German paratroopers invade and the occupation of Holland begins on May 10, 1940. During the first six or seven months only a few things change and Dutch Jews, an integral and accepted part of their country, think rumors of the German actions elsewhere are exaggerated. But as 1940 marches into 1941, hope for the future slips away and fear advances as the rights of Jews are wrested from them. Jewish businesses are closed, telephone use forbidden, and a curfew imposed. Ultimately, they are forced to turn in their valuables which include religious items like the silver candlesticks for Shabbat. Labeled with six-pointed yellow stars, Jews are easily identified and laws enacted against them easily enforced.
Then the steady deportation begins of Jewish young people to Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. In April 1942, the six Rijnfeld girls are summoned for resettlement. Sofie decides to go with them. After tearful farewells with Jan, the seven women join the others filling crowded boxcars. Relocated to Westerbork, the Rijnfelds carry out their work assignments and encounter telltale signs of the deep hatred the Germans feel for the Jews. But life is mostly tolerable and the girls are together.
When the Rijnfeld women are sent on to Auschwitz, Sofie reaches deeper for the resilience to keep her daughters and herself alive in the face of atrocities carried out at the Reich's foremost killing center. Although the book is fiction, Polansky bases it on fact. Sofie did exist and she did accompany her stepdaughters all the way to Auschwitz. Polansky tells Sofie's story of self-sacrifice filling in fictionally how those years may have unfolded. Reading the frightening truth about the Holocaust is never easy, but the triumph of this woman who survives despite great loss is inspiring.
An Amazing story.......2005-11-19
This was the most graphic depiction of the camps that I have ever read and I'm sure that my blood pressure went up many notches as I was reading this novel. I recommend not reading this book if you are - for example, waiting for a child at piano or soccer lessons. It's a very riveting story and one can easily get "caught-up" in the horror of the era. This is not easy reading, but a must for book clubs and for those who truly want to understand the horrors that these innocent people experienced. The first half of the book deals with the horrors of the camps and the second half depicts the resiliency of many of the survivors, such as that of the heroine in this story. Personally, I cannot comprehend how these survivors were able to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives and attempt to continue living in light of the atrocities these people endured. I have the honor of knowing a number of holocaust survivors and I stand in awe of their outlook on life... and such is the message Ms. Polansky so ably conveys in this book.

Book Description
George Macdonald, the author of Phantastes and Lilith, provides a somewhat different tale, here, with the story of Hector Macintosh, a young Scotsman, son of a banker, and a poet consumed by the ideal. But his verse is strictly private: "His mind would dwell much upon love and friendship in the imaginary abstract, but of neither had he had the smallest immediate experience."
That is, until he meets Annie Melville, who takes service as a parlor maid in his household to help support herself and her mother. Annie is beneath his station -- but Hector is oblivious to such concerns.
Under Annie's influence, he blossoms as a writer. But will he blossom into a man with the courage to let her know his feelings for her? And what might occur if he does?

Very Disappointing.......2004-07-08
I just recently started reading the books in the Magic the Gathering realm. What sparked an interest in reading the novels is that I am a long time player of the card game. So naturally being a big fan of the game I wanted to find out if the books offered any exciting background and/or origins of the characters, items and creatures that exist in the game. This novel being titled "The Colors of Magic", in my opinion failed to deliver any sense or explanation of the mystic powers that each color and its terrain represent. Even the stories that are to portray each color are dull and don't capture the true meaning of what each color denotes. Maybe all of this is coming from a player's perspective, but even for a fantasy novel it was a REAL SNOOZE.
Some good - Some bad.... overall not worth reading.......2004-06-30
This anthology, like many anthology books, is filled with various stories that are both good and bad. One big problem I had with the anthology on a whole was there was only one black story - and it was awful. While the other colors had two or three stories to balance out the different styles of play and effect the various colors could incorporate the color black was left with a very poor story. It was absolutely hideous. I can only hope the other books by Vance Moore (the author of the black story) in the magic series are a billion times better.
While my favorites were the red and white stories (white being my favorite overall) and they were worth reading, the others were only mediocre at best, and black being, well you've read the above paragraph.
Decent anthology, but not worth it to read it. I would've much rather have started the ice age cycle instead of delving into these stories that were not worth the time.
This book rocks!.......2002-08-14
This book was amazing! Every story was great! Some were very ironic and full of satire. Others were sad and even others were full of action. This book helps to explain what the colors of magic are all about. Awesome job authors!
Magic: The Gathering --- Colors of Magic.......2000-03-06
This is an awesome book if you enjoy reading Magic: The Gathering. This book is composed of a number of short stories seperated into different color sections. Each section has 1-3 enchanting tales that relate to that M:TG color. All in all, it is a great book for M:TG readers.
Some good, some clunkers. Overall, a very nice anthology........1999-08-12
Well, Magic keeps rolling down the highway of good books with its first "Anthology Anthology" (unlike the pitiful "Rath and Storm"), known as "The Colors of Magic." My perticular favorite story was Jeff Grubb's "Loran's Smile", and Feldon's quest to get Loran back by any means possible. He gives everything, but he gains much more. The clunker was the story of Black Magic, which I read three times and still did not understand. It made me want to rip those pages out of the book, so poor was the short story. Overall: Read Red, White, and Gold. Do not read: Black. Everything else is vanilla.

Excellent!.......2002-09-21
I could hardly stand to put this book down. Time travel books are all starting to look alike, but I found the idea of time tourism to be fascinating. The small community overrun by tourists was a great place to start, and with the wild clash of the vastly different cultures from all different times and places, it was absolutely stewing with adventure. The writing was smooth, with plenty of exciting, tense moments but also plenty of humor. I felt by the end of the book that I really knew the characters.
I never read series out of order, but this was the first book I'd read out of tis series and I never would have known it wasn't the first if I hadn't started looking for more books by the same author -- it is a completely independent book from Time Scout. I highly recommend it for anyone aching for a fast paced adventure.
I love this book.......2002-02-10
Provides a very interesting theory what if time travle was possible?
Preety engaging and very fun now I have to find the first book in the serise someplace.
More of the same.......2002-01-21
This is one of those sequels that only seems to present more of the same. I'm afraid I trudged though about 1/3 of this book and fell asleep. For me it was one of those books that once you put it down, you can't pick it up again. I may have to come back in 10 years or so and try again.
A Fun Book.......2001-03-18
"Wagers of Sin" is the second book about the Time Scouts from La-LA Land (Time Terminal #86). The story flowed well and kept my interest, I have ordered the next book in the series, "Ripping Time".
In this story Skeetor Jackson gets into a wager with Goldie Moran over who can scam the most money in a month. The bet causes a series of problems. One result of the bet is Skeetor and Marcus being sold into slavery while in Ancient Rome. Margo and malcom chase an art thief through the Old West and we finally learn about Skeetor's mysterious past.
The first book in this sereies was "Time Scout", Next came this novel, then "Ripping Time", the fourth book appears to be "The House That Jack Built". The entire series is worth reading.
Nice sequel..........2000-09-27
Rarely do authors bring the same energy and life to sequels, but just as with the Myth tales and Phule's Company, Asprin has written a book almost as good as its predecessor.
The sentences, paragraphs and chapters flow much better in this book than in the first, as if they've been more thoroughly edited. Asprin also keeps interest in the plot because he's exploring a whole set of characters who were only a part of the background in Time Scout. It certainly makes you want to reread the first book, and gives it a whole new dimension when you do. The plot itself is a little limited, but still quite enjoyable.
Two great books so far--May there be more to come.

38 jokes.......2000-09-10
38 jokes, one each chapter, put the reader in a good mood to begin each episode. I expected the jokes to explain something in the reading, but they were unrelated to the text. The novel features a large array of characters, often with names from the Iliad & Odyssey, such as Elaine Troy, Ugo Memnoni, Eddie Paris, a horse named Son of Siren. I was sure we would be treated to a Trojan horse gambit, but it didn't happen. This book is sorely in need of editing. Lasix, a trade name was in lower case, but cafe latte appeared as Cafe Latte (a new trendy restaurant in Soho?). A few typos are common these days, but one was disastrous. Instead of shiksa (Yiddish for a gentile woman) it appeared as shika, Yiddish for a drunk. There are some 30 characters mentioned in addition to the various horses, some with sliding personalities. Elaine starts out as a conniving temptress, ends up as a loyal domestic heroine. Having so many characters doesn't let the author develop them fully, resulting in defining them by quirks such as owning a boa constrictor, being 4'8", tongueless and wearing a helmet, and the like. Still, I had to backtrack to identify some of the people as they appeared later in the book. The theme showed the similarities between gambling at the track and gambling in the stock market, mob fixes, boiler rooms and all. The initial track scheme appeared to depend on skill- an underrated horse, a deft handicapper and reasoned bets, but deteriorates into hidden vet findings, drugged horses and murder. The stock market scheme is never on the up and up -- inflated buys, short sells and insider information permeate from the start.
The good beginning and interesting development don't realize themselves. There is some resolution, but many endings are left dangling and they are not dramatic. Sinners go unpunished, we never actually see the bodies, the heroes are unrewarded. We should be shown, rather than told. This is the main fault of this book. The motivation was inspiring, the development and medial summary were logical, but the bell rang before the lesson concluded.
Nevertheless, I would give this book five stars for the following reasons: 1. The jokes were very funny. 2. There was ample sex. 3. The races were exciting. 4. I couldn't find any errors in grammar, very rare. 5. Some aspects of love were realistic (lovers were forgiven for the unforgiveable). 6. There was a transcendent feeling of joy, probably originating in the author. 7. It motivated me to look up some of the references to Greek mythology and Shakespeare.

Bored? Restless? Then this is the book for you........2006-04-22
I first came across Jess Michaels from an anthology in the "Secrets" series. I decided to try her out, and I was quite disappointed.
The main heroine of this book, Bianca Clairmonte is a year old widow. For the past year, she has taking on a string of lovers and is living to what her father deems as a "debauched" lifestyle. This was due to the fact that she was married young to a man who did not cherish or uphold the "sanctity of marriage" and felt that love making should be shared. They frequented brothels together.
However, her late husbands best friend, and yes you guessed it....the hero of this book, Lucius "Hawk" Hawkins has always secretly loved Bianca. Bianca in the mean time is busy spending her money frivolously, playing and losing at card games to Hawk....
In attempts to keep his wayward daughter in check, Bianca's father threatens to have her declared unfit and take charge of her estate and financies.
Bianca now realizes that she needs to now gain her lost fortune back quickly! So she proposes a very illicit wager to Hawk - spend a month in her bed and if he ends up begging for more, she wins her money back.
But of course, Hawk wants more than a month and he is going to pull all the stops to ensure that he turns the tables around and it is her not he that is begging for more....and hopefully she would not just beg for more but for forevermore.
I mentioned in the opening paragraph that I did not enjoy this book. It is an OK read if one needed to pass the time during a moment of absolute boredom and restlessness.
I felt that it was too simple and predictable. Aloofness belied the passion. There were no tender moments between the hero and heroine in my humble opinion; And like their love story, this book was forgetful.
Character development was non existent and frankly the best part of this book was the ending.
Save your money... I would not bother buying this book unless you have run out of options!

Great book wish it was better made.......2007-09-28
I have enjoyed this book this summer. I have used several of the tips and receipes all to great success. The only problem I have with it is the binding is coming apart. About 30 pages fell out last time I pulled it out. Not real happy with that since it is fairly new but I should be able to fix it somehow. Anyway this is a great book ... regardless of experence level.
good book on grilling.......2007-09-02
Good book. Lots of tips, and good recipes. Beer-can chicken is the ONLY way to do chicken, as far was we are concerned! Many great grilled meals await you.
GRILLING 101 for charcoal or gas.......2007-09-02
.
This is an ideal starting point if you want to get the most out of your grill; be it charcoal or gas.
If you are looking for a good book on grilling, this is a great choice. This book will assuredly help you improve your skill on the grill. It covers everything from Hamburgers to Ribs and veggies.
If you've already got skills, the recipes will not disappoint.
Great Book!.......2007-08-23
Wonderful format and excellent recipes. I've been using it for about 3 weeks and I haven't had a dud yet. You have to absolutely try the Beer Can Chicken. You will never eat chicken any other way again!
Some good recipes, but heavily padded, and with some noteable flaws.......2007-08-21
Despite it's popularity as a best seller, I think this book is rather over-rated.
STRENGTHS:
* This book has lots of comforting full-color photographs for the benefit of culinarily adventerous n00bs.
* This books covers a fairly broad array of grilling recipes ... meat, fish, vegetables, fruit ... there's a little bit of something for almost everyone, which is exactly what they set out to do, in order to maximize sales. Charcoal is preferred, but this book is minimally gas friendly too ... but only if your burners are of the front-to-rear variety. If they're side to side, you're SOL when it comes to most 'indirect heat' techniques.
* Some of the recipes are actually pretty tasty, which partially compensates for some of the serious flaws listed below. One standout for me is the whole butterflied marinated leg of lamb (which I've since improved upon). Nice recipe, but too much scallion.
NITS:
* This books sacrifices depth for breadth - in other words, it covers a LOT of turf, but none of it exhaustively or well.
* This book is heavily and gratuitously padded with needlessly repetative and unnecessary fluff. Case in point - virtually every recipe says to start your grill, and then wastes a FULL PAGE repeating, over and over and over again (with the same color photos) how to start and bank a 2 or 3-tier charcoal fire, for direct or indirect grilling. Cutting out that wasted repitition would have left room for (I kid you not) at least 33% more recipes, for the same page count. Can you say "RIP OFF" ? I knew you could.
* The photographer they hired is a cheater, and a gimick-hound, and nothing irks me faster than photographs (and cookbooks that use them) that lie and deceive. Case in point - if you look any almost any of the close-ups, you will spot right away that most of the grilled items were BAKED (not grilled) off camera, and that the food photographer merely made them APPEAR grilled by branding them with hot wires, and then laying them on a stone-cold-never-before-used grill. There are, however, a few very helpful sequences ... such as the one on how to prep and grill a whole baby lamb (something I'm looking forward to attempting sometime this coming year).
* Some of the recipes are just plain absurd. I mean come on - what [...]-retentive cook is going to butterfly a dozen hot dogs, stuff them with cheese and jalepeno slices, tie them closed, grill them (somehow without making a total mess), and then de-string and serve them before the cheese hardens back up again ? HELLO ?
