Book Description
A Master on the Periphery of Capitalism is a translation (from the original Portuguese) of Roberto Schwarz’s renowned study of the work of Brazilian novelist Machado de Assis (1839–1908). A leading Brazilian theorist and author of the highly influential notion of âmisplaced ideas,â Schwarz focuses his literary and cultural analysis on Machado’s The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas, which was published in 1880. Writing in the Marxist tradition, Schwarz investigates in particular how social structure gets internalized as literary form, arguing that Machado’s style replicates and reveals the deeply embedded class divisions of nineteenth-century Brazil.
Widely acknowledged as the most important novelist to have written in Latin America before 1940, Machado had a surprisingly modern style. Schwarz notes that the unprecedented wit, sarcasm, structural inventiveness, and mercurial changes of tone and subject matter found in The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas marked a crucial moment in the history of Latin American literature. He argues that Machado’s vanguard narrative reflects the Brazilian owner class and its peculiar status in both national and international contexts, and shows why this novel’s success was no accident. The author was able to confront some of the most prestigious ideologies of the nineteenth century with some uncomfortable truths, not the least of which was that slavery remained the basis of the Brazilian economy.
A Master on the Periphery of Capitalism will appeal to those with interests in Latin American literature, nineteenth century history, and Marxist literary theory.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Essay.......2003-10-28
This is Roberto Schwarz's greatest work. Mr. Schwarz provides an in-depth Marxist-oriented analysis of Machado's masterpiece, the novel "The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas". The novel is brilliantly analysed both in its stylistic features and in its historical and sociological aspects. An important work for those who want to understand the contradictory nature of Brazilian soul and Latin American identity alike.
Book Description
One of the greatest novels of Brazilian Literature, Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas is narrated by a dead man who recounts the amorous misadventures of his unheroic life and explains his half-hearted political ambitions. While it is considered the first novel of Brazilian realism, its quirks seem refreshingly modern and make it unforgettably unlike anything written before or after it.

Book Description
HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES
Yaya’s high school friends haven’t been very nice. They call her “Yaya the cry-ya! Yaya the misfi-ya!” But no matter how badly they act, Yaya is just too naïve and trusting to believe the worst of her friends. Hard-rocking, butt-kicking Nana is just the girl to grab hold of Yaya’s timid demeanor and turn it upside down. Nana exposes Yaya’s “friends” as slime bags, doles out punishment, and does it all with style. Can there be anything that terminally shy Yaya and hyper-confident Nana have in common? Well, for one thing, they’re the same person. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Yaya or is she Nana? .......2005-12-07
This story begins with the sad life of Yaya. She lost her mother, she's bullied by her "best friends", and she's competely shy and timid. Just when things are getting worse for Yaya, Nana, her alter ego appears and saves the day! Now Nana is righting wrongs and doing so in a kick butt style! Things are looking better for Yaya with Nana and Moriyama (Yaya's boy classmate)!!
This book is great! You really connect with Yaya at the beginning and the author just keeps on grabbing your attention! It's a great hook which will leave you wanting more! The drawing style of the author is in my oppinion good, you can really follow the story. The author also adds helpful notes that keep you informed on things you might not get! So I give this book two thumbs up!!
YOU DON'T REALLY KNOW ME.......2005-08-05
YaYa Higuchi, a timid and shy 16 year old high schooler doesn't really have any friends. The only people that would sort of qualify are Seri and Moe. But they treat her like dirt, mocking her behind her back and in front of her face. Her clothes aren't trendy enough, she's not pretty enough, fix us lunches, give us your concert tickets: these are examples of how the two sadistic girls treat her. Any normal person would cut ties with them, but YaYa doesn't want to be alone and I guess she thinks bad company is better than no company. And there's also Moriyama, a guy she sorta likes, but he makes fun of her too, or is it that he wants her to respect herself more? Things begin to change when YaYa receives a "post capsule", which is like a time capsule, where you write yourself a message and the post office delivers it to you years after. In this letter the 7-year-old YaYa said her dream was to be a rockstar! There's also a compact from the "Magical Girl Run-Run" show about a magical girl. Later on when a gang of boys try to take advantage of YaYa, Moe, and Seri at a Karaoke Box, the other side of YaYa's personality asserts itself in the form of NaNa, the outgoing fighter who doesn't take anything from anyone.
Othello is a comedy with very dramatic underpinnings. The fact that someone can surpress their true self so much that your personality has to split in order for you to be complete is pretty sad. It would be nice if everyone had the power to be their own person, but that doesn't always happen, especially in high school. NaNa's bits were very funny as she tries to foil the plans of the deceptive haters Moe and Seri and there is the makings of a love story between YaYa and Moriyama that seems interesting. Othello is a comedy that also examines loneliness, failed dreams, and peer pressure. But there's a nice dose of hope, love, and sympathy dashed in there too.
Go NANA!!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-16
This comic is tragic, yes. I've never read Shakespeare's Othello, but it is one of the great Shakespearean tragedies, n'est-ce pas? The cover artwork of this book is what attracted my eye. It's a lot like "Peach Girl" by Miwa Ueda (check it out, it's also great!) The beginning just makes me want to stomp Seri and Moe into the dirt. It just gets worse as the story wears on and you'll grow to hate Seri and Moe even more. Yaya is the underdog with a twist! Nana is there to rescue her! I would absolutely marry Nana or Moriyama (yes, he likes Zeppelin!) and they'd make such a great pair! You'll find yourself rooting for Yaya and praying she'll somehow get her life in order and embrace Nana permanently! The one thing I don't get though is how Yaya can cosplay, yet she is still Yaya. THAT is her balance. THAT is who she truly is. I can't wait to get the second volume! DEEP themes of the yin and yang, the moderate, the extreme. And since when did Del Rey or whatever-the-heck it is start publishing manga! I really like the introduction and explanation of Japanese cultural references. I would love for Viz or Tokyopop to start setting up their manga like this! A must-read for any fan of the saint-sinner idea, yet I've never read anything like it!
Unique art with a cute frame.......2005-03-31
Probably my favourite part about this series is the art. There is a certain theme of drawing that can be found throughout a lot of manga ("Fruits Basket", anyone?), but the characters in this novel are like I've never seen before. The costumes Ikezawa draws for the Cosplay kids are beautiful by themselves.
The story is adorable as well - if you've ever been kicked around or felt insecure about yourself, this is definately something for you. When I was in middle school, I felt much like Yaya. Seeing the butt-kicking Nana take revenge was a bit cathartic for me, I'll admit ^_^
Shy girls rejoice!
This manga was great.......2004-12-03
I loved the story line for this manga and the art is beautiful. I can not wait to get the next volume. The story is about a girl named Yaya who hangs out with her so called friends. Her friends use her and make fun of her and she does not like it but she does not want to be alone either. She soon starts crushing on a guy, and certain situations seem to bring out another side of Yaya. She starts telling her so called friends off yet Yaya is unaware of this alter ego and her friends don't believe it is really Yaya. She is a really nice girl but when her alter ego shows up she is a whole new person ready to take on the world. The story is really fun. I suggest it to anyone who likes manga.

A must read for those who read Zero Stone........2000-07-28
I found this to be a most enjoyable book to read after I finished reading The Zero Stone. It continues the search of Eet and Murodc for the source of the Zero Stone. It reveals more of the stone's power. And, after rescueing the Zacathan from raiders, how they are able to trace the stone to it's source and the final outcome of Murdoc and Eet is surprising. I do hope that they continue with the tale of Murdoc and Eet.

Sequel to "The Zero Stone".......2006-03-17
Okay Norton fans, we're on a strange planet but in otherwise familiar territory: a young outcast pitted against the mighty Patrol and the mysterious, unsavory Thieves Guild. Our hero, Murdoc Jern, an apprentice gem dealer, companions a telepathic pseudo-cat named Eet. In their first adventure, "The Zero Stone," the two discovered that their mysterious Forerunner artifact is an endless source of energy (a sort of space opera perpetual motion machine). Now they are trying to trace the Zero Stone to its source.
Murdoc is also trying to rectify the master-slave relationship with Eet that developed in the previous novel. He purchases a battered old space yacht with his reward from previous adventures and tries his hand at purchasing gems on one planet and selling them for a higher price on another. He decides to purchase Zorans on Lorgal, sell them on Rakipur to the priests of Mankspher, in order to buy the pearls of lonnex crabs. Et cetera. Of course his first venture is almost a complete disaster when another trader shows up and beats him to the market. Murdoc, his drug-addicted pilot, and Eet must chart a new course.
Through a series of hair-raising adventures, including the rescue of a gravely injured Zacathan archeologist, Murdoc and Eet end up on Waystar, the mysterious stronghold of the Thieves' Guild. They are taken prisoner while on the hunt for the source of the Zero Stone, and also for the archeologist's stolen artifacts.
Where better to hunt for treasure than in the great galactic storehouse of loot, and property stolen from current and long-vanished stellar Empires? Of course, Murdoc and Eet must somehow stay alive in this flamboyant and dangerous den of thieves in order to achieve their objectives.
"Uncharted Stars" takes place in the fantastically populated universe of Norton's Free Traders and Forerunners. Wandering the fabulous storerooms of Waystar with this author makes up for any traces of antiquity in her science or tough-guy jargon. Eet serves as a sort of deus ex machina whenever Murdoc gets himself into really serious trouble, and there is a satisfying surprise ending for those readers who have followed the intrepid gemologist and his mutant cat through "The Zero Stone" and its sequel.
