Customer Reviews:
The best audio book I have heard!.......2007-10-07
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is my all time favorite novel. It the my "go to" book that I typically do read at least once a year during an unexpected wait in an ER etc. I purchased this audio book because I drive in my work and I wanted to see if I liked it compared to the last one I tried several years ago where the narrator was so southern I could not understand her. All I can say about Sissy Spacek is that she hits this one out of the park. I was captivated from beginning to end. I give this audio book a A +++.
Spacek is Special.......2007-09-02
Sissy Spacek draws from her Texas roots and does a subtly superb performance of Harper Lee's masterpiece of coming of age in an age of intolerance - Alabama during the Great Depression. Harper-Collins did a superior job of producing and packaging this all-round classic, must have addition to your library.
For more information about Nelle Harper Lee and how "To Kill a Mockingbird" came to be, I also recommend Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer
To Kill a Mockingbird.......2007-08-12
As a reader, it's difficult for me to listen to someone else's interpretation of words. This is an exceptional effort by Sissy Spacek. The flavor & nuance of Harper Lee's intention (I believe) are captured and enhanced. My thanks to both women!
Sissy Spacek is Impeccable.......2007-06-27
After reading To Kill a Mockingbird in high school and college, and starting Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee, I decided I needed a refresher, so I checked out this audio book from my local library. Sissy Spacek's reading is absolutely wonderful. Her Southern accent is spot-on, soothing, and not at all over-the-top. Her tone is soothing and lovely and the story and characters shine through. If you have a long commute or just enjoy audio books, this is a definite must!
Great for classroom or personal pleasure!.......2007-05-21
Sissy Spacek does a wonderful job reading Harper Lee's classic. She has a light Southern accent that makes you believe you are listening to Scout. If the performance weren't enough, the price and the packaging make it all worth the while. The tracks are evenly spaced, and they are well catalogued on the CD jackets. Definitely a pleasure all around!

Perfect for the busy English Teacher.......2002-07-31
The collection of literature units created by Ms. Collins are extremely well done. The lessons and activities are consistant and thorough for a complete unit study. Several different test options are provided as well as activities with varying levels of difficulty. This is the first set of literture units I've found that do not need to be adapted for classroom use. Just print and take to work. Many titles are available. Well worth the money!!!!

"When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.... When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out."
Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird follows three years in the life of 8-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus--three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman. Though her story explores big themes, Harper Lee chooses to tell it through the eyes of a child. The result is a tough and tender novel of race, class, justice, and the pain of growing up.
Like the slow-moving occupants of her fictional town, Lee takes her time getting to the heart of her tale; we first meet the Finches the summer before Scout's first year at school. She, her brother, and Dill Harris, a boy who spends the summers with his aunt in Maycomb, while away the hours reenacting scenes from Dracula and plotting ways to get a peek at the town bogeyman, Boo Radley. At first the circumstances surrounding the alleged rape of Mayella Ewell, the daughter of a drunk and violent white farmer, barely penetrate the children's consciousness. Then Atticus is called on to defend the accused, Tom Robinson, and soon Scout and Jem find themselves caught up in events beyond their understanding. During the trial, the town exhibits its ugly side, but Lee offers plenty of counterbalance as well--in the struggle of an elderly woman to overcome her morphine habit before she dies; in the heroism of Atticus Finch, standing up for what he knows is right; and finally in Scout's hard-won understanding that most people are essentially kind "when you really see them." By turns funny, wise, and heartbreaking, To Kill a Mockingbird is one classic that continues to speak to new generations, and deserves to be reread often. --Alix Wilber
Book Description
When To Kill a Mockingbird first appeared in 1960, it became an instant bestseller. It is still considered a masterpiece of American literature, with over 15 million copies in print in ten languages. Harper Lee's semiautobiographical tale is told from the point of view of six-year-old Jean Louise "Scout" Finch. Scout, her brother Jem, and their friend Dill share routine childhood adventures in a small Alabama town in the 1930s where Scout's father, Atticus, is an attorney. But when a brutal rape shakes the town, serious life lessons begin. The children learn about racial prejudice as they watch Atticus courageously defend an innocent black man. They learn tolerance and empathy as they observe his championing of the crotchety Mrs. Dubose. And they see the power of kindness in his protection of the reclusive Boo Radley.

To Kill A Mockingbird.......2007-10-08
I read this book in my English class before I saw the movie, and I must say I was amazed enough to actually continually read this novel as opposed to going to the cliff notes. It is rather engaging, and Gregory Peck, although giving one of the greatest performances of all time, did not give Atticus Finch the justice he well deserved.
Highly recommended.
Significant and Memorable.......2007-09-30
This ever-popular, Pulitzer prize-winning novel is written from the first-person perspective of "Scout," a young girl growing up in a small, segregated Alabama town during the Great Depression. I did not read any descriptions of the book before I began it, so it was fascinating as I began to realize what it was about. Its gentle, childlike, Tom Sawyer, heart-of-America cadence drew me in, but provided a counterpoint to the hypocrisy, racism, and bigotry that was revealed in the town little by little.
The writing itself, of course, is excellent, telling the story subtly but powerfully - or perhaps the power is in its very subtlety. In my opinion, this is not the most compelling book I've ever read on this issue, but it is significant and memorable.
bought to kill a mockingbird.......2007-09-27
i bought the book to kill a mockingbird. it was in excellent condition. the price was also very low.
Loved Loved Loved!.......2007-09-23
Anyone who gives this book a chance will absolutely love it! It starts out with childhood memories of Scout Finch that seem to be completely unrelated, but Harper Lee cleverly weaves them together to make a great novel. The novel's point of view is unique and is probably what makes this book a classic. The story is seen through the innocent eyes of a six year old, but is being retold by an older, more mature woman. This allows the novel to have more mature language and ideas, but everything is seen through an innocent child's eyes. It's the best of both worlds, and I promise you, you'll be in tears by the end. It's a heart wrenching novel, and though it may sound repetitive, you'll love this book if you read it!
Perfect-pitch storytelling.......2007-09-12
The recollections of a young girl in a small southern town during the depression. Harper Lee adopts a near pitch-perfect voice of 'Scout' Finch as a narrator thinking back over the events and able to summon the 8-year old Scout to help tell them.
Thought often subtle, Lee keeps her eye on the subject of bigotry - bigotry of race, sex, class, education, family - and, through Scout's eyes, shines a spotlight on its cruelty and shows how the seeds are being planted for tidal changes that are on the way.
It's hard to imagine a better storyteller.

Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-27
Although a Wonder Woman story, there are parts to play for others in the JLA, Flash, Green Lantern, Superman, et. al. WW finds an island of reverse Amazons, so to speak, and other oddities in the course of this adventure.
If the Bermuda Triangle is in a story, it is also pretty much a given that there will be some sort of mystery.
Wonder Woman vs. brainwashed men.......2005-12-31
In this installment of the Justice League of America novels, the focus is on Wonder Woman, or Princess of the Amazon Diana, who is investigates the disapperence of a diver near her island home of Themyscira (an island populated by women who worship the Olympian Gods). She finally finds Henry, but also finds a lost island that is a male mirror of Themscira, where thousands of men worship Ares, the Greek god of war. She figures out that an orb from space is actually behind a plot to enslave the world, especially the women.
This seems like a novel only a woman can write. I know I sound misogynic, but look at the theme here. The idea of the whole book is that this malevolent orb can more easily change men into violent chauvinist, though stupid and completly void of self motivation. Even the powerful god Ares was not immune. And women (especially Wonder Woamn and Ana, Henry's wife) are the only ones who can counter act the effects with talking of love and compassion, with a lot of hippy 'flower power' talk. The idea is kind of valid, but to make men so easily suspetable to the evil is kind of insulting.
The other problem I had with this book is the lack of charactorization of Wonder Woman. I found her to be cold and distant, even if she was always huging and kissing the other team members. I really wanted to know what made her tick, but never really got to know.
The saving grace of the book was it's action. Toward the end there wer exiting nonstop fights and chases. Also the inclusion of Batman's Oracle was a nice touch.
Good, but not as well rounded as I had hoped.
Bad fan fiction.......2005-12-22
There's a term that I can't remember because I don't really follow it for a subset of bad Star Trek fan-fiction where the author adds a character we've never seen before who is obviously a thinly veiled, idealized version of the author herself who ends up saving the Enterprise, the galaxy and reality and winning the hearts of Kirk and Spock.
Do I need to explain more? (If so, I'll give you a hint. The woman in this book who saves the lives of those helpless weaklings Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and the Flash is a diver who lives in LA with her husband and the author's bio says she lives in LA with her husband and dive buddy.)
As others have pointed out, the previously existing JLA members are wildly out of character and incompetent. The "villain" of the piece, a red orb that makes people fight, (speaking of Star Trek...) is a bland cliche and the dialogue, especially the "funny" lines delivered by the author's wish fulfillment analogue and her "All You Need is Love" sections are embarassing and wince-inducing.
Comic book fans are completists so they'll need to buy this but don't add insult to injury by reading this godawful tripe.
Good use of characters.......2005-06-17
3.5 stars
Though still not a stellar work, this follow up to the poor Batman:The Stone King manages to be a fairly adept piece of escapist reading with the tension handled well to keep the reader's interest.
Primarily focusing on Wonder Woman, we do get to see more of the rest of the JLA than in the Stone King. When they are out of the action to allow Wonder Woman to take center stage it is handled relatively well and isn't too unbelievable. The other JLA members are able to contribute without overwhelming Wonder Woman's importance
One of the strengths of the book is the use of the normal woman. Secondary characters can make or break these books. As there really isn't going to be any earth shaking revelations about the JLA or massive character growth the handling of secondary characters is where the author gets a chance to portray such events. In this case, the minor character is handled very well to drive the plot forward, provoke interest and caring from the reader and provide some good humor.
There are some weak and/or slow moments, particularly the time Wonder Woman spends on her home island. Once we reach one third of the way in though, the pace picks up and drives forward without being relentless.
The flaws do not overshadow the strengths, nor do they prevent it from being an enjoyable read. Not a great read, but a fun read, and quite superior to The Stone King.
Great Read.......2005-06-14
This is the first book that I have read of the series and of the author. I have to say it was a great read. Nothing overally exciting, but it was smooth, took a little over a day to take in. The writing style was very nice, and the idealisms of the characters converted very nicely into book print. Although I was a little disapointed by some of the characteristics of the heros, I did respect someone else's take on them. I would recommend this book for anyone with a love of Wonder Woman or a love for JLA in general.

This book is absolute gold! I can honestly say that the tips provided in this book have helped me and will continue to help me throughout my life. Martin Shenkman is a genius.
Great advice for doctors and others........2006-05-16
As an attorney, I enjoyed reading this practical easy to read guide to asset protection. I have recommended this book to a number of my clients.
The book addresses practical and creative steps to protect assets using trusts and limited liability companies.
The book also discusses protecting assets from divorce which is a topic few books discuss.
The book explains concepts that will assist the reader in establishing a better working relationship with the reader's attorney.
Shallow and Disappointing.......2004-09-13
I had high expectations for this book, to which it didn't live up. I presumed, incorrectly, that Mr. Shenkman had specific experience as an attorney practicing in this area. My impression is that his writings on asset protection appear to be just a summarization of the writings of others, with little or no original thought. About halfway through this book, puzzled by its consistent shallowness, I finally did some research on Mr. Shenkman and found out that he seemingly just quickly cranks out a new book every time some topic heats up, such as his "How to Buy a House with No (or Little) Money Down".
Customer Reviews:
Rennie at his best!.......2007-02-16
Execution Hour is a must have book for any BFG player. The book is written just as if Rennie was watching a huge BFG Tournament game being played out and he was the play by play man for some gallactic radio station! The details he puts into the book are so descriptive, yet easy to read, that you actually "feel" the storyline. Fantastic descriptions of an Imperial Cruiser or a Chaos capital ship. The scenes on the bridge where Captain Semper commands his ship are so well layed out, it was just as if Rennie used an Imperial set of blueprints. BFG players will love the battle details, and the book is full of them!
Battlefleet Gothic at its finest.......2006-03-01
Wow!, well written and thoroughly absorbing. The struggle and futility were conveyed well, as was the desperation and dedication by all characters. The details were as accurate with the 40K universe as they can be. A well recommended book for those who like me, love all things sci-fi and the Universe of Warhammer 40k.
Very Interresting.......2003-04-30
This is a tale about the ongoing war in the Gothic sector( a area in the Warhammer 40,000 that is rife with war and conflict). But, there is a dark threat on the horizon. Abaddons evil warfleet is on its way with a new weapon called, "The Planet killer". The Imperial warship, THE MACHARIUS, lead by Captain Semper. Is in a struggle against the agents of chaos. This book has it all. A finely written book that is easy to follow( if you know & understand the warhammer 40,000 world ). It has epic battles in space and more personal battles on the planet of belatis; A planet marked for complete destruction. It also tell the story from several different angles;from Capt. Semper to a lowly crew hand...There is also a new book out called "Shadow Point" that is the second part to this book.
Execution Hour, once more for Black Library.......2003-04-03
Execution hour is one of the best novel out there, Sadly, you have to understand a lot about the WarHamer 40K universe, so for new fans, or outsider, they should start with simpler book (See Space Wolf (Ragnar's books), Xenos (Eisenhorn trilogy) and even the Eye of Terror novels). But for the fan's it's a rarely seen aspect of the WH40K universe, the space battles, and gothic ships, fighters etc... It's a great book, good and strong story line, a few twists to keep it interesting, the action, and space battle are vividly and richly detailed, and thus, completely enjoyable, the only negative part was the end, a little abrupt, but they're will obviously be a sequel in the future, recommended to all knowledgeable fans.
Execution Hour Review.......2002-11-04
Emperor be praised! What a great novel! Players of Battlefleet Gothic or Warhammer 40k or just fans of Sci-Fi will like this action packed book! Alot of outer space fleet action, small craft fighter action even grounder pounder action! And the characters are involving and interesting. It's also an excellent tie in to the Abaddon Black Crusade saga. Get it, NOW!

But what about Google?.......2007-07-12
I have not read this book, but I listened to an interview on Wall Street Journal This Week (podcast). It is sad that corporate and Wall Street has driven the "front line force/employees" to the ground and view employees as a commodity. However, this corporate greed, arrogance and uncaring attitude has promoted one thing - entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, entrepreneurship takes a good amount of capital, something that many employees do not have. Therefore we are stuck with the mercy of our corporate employers, while we pursue the American Dream - the welfare of our family. But that American Dream could also be that you part of, for example, the Google team.
Top-down Management Fails Again!!.......2000-08-06
The author of this book, Dr. Alan Downs, performed corporate downsizings for years and now explains they seldom attain the goals a company wanted.
Dr. Downs explains that, contrary to what we read, life in the workplace is deteriorating for nearly everyone. He explains that greed is the driving force behind company lay-offs and it must be checked. He advocates a new "social contract" between companies and employees.
America's businesses must begin to understand that they are often responsible for the tension in our society that invites the rampant drug use. Top-down, authoritarian, do-it-my way management defies research into human development that has been with us since 1927 when the "halo effect" was discovered. More harmony and less friction is needed between labor and management and this is what Dr. Downs writes about. He states that businesses need "rejuvination, not dismemberment. He is right!!
Many books have been written and studies have been made that show management is not as good as it is cracked up to be and it is time for change. Worker friendly institutions will only be brought about in the 21st Century by managers who know how to inspire workers. Companies who heed this advice, based on sound research will benefit across the board as will communities and the people who work in them.
Dr. Downs book reveals a hidden truth about corporate America that government officials should pay attention to, but they may not as special interest groups are at the very top of these companies that promote this "ugly truth" with large pay checks in the form of political contributions.
If you are a CEO, in high level management, a politician or a union leader, read this book and go to work on correcting this ugly corporate structure sure to play havoc within America sometime in the 21st Century.
Norman Jones, Ed.D author of Performance Management in the 21st Century
Top-down management is rebuffed by Dr, Downs!!.......1999-06-09
In Corporate Executions, Dr. Downs shows how the government and top executives foster top-down management practices that are helping to create unwanted and unneeded tesnion in our country. Years ago it seems that companies had the best interest of communities and employees in mind, but this book dispells that long lost attitude. To his credit, Dr. Down rebukes the downsizing, the re-engineering of companies because he participated in these tragedies and makes recommendations to increase the performance of companies without affecting the morale of people. His book should be read by every politician and every CEO and taken to heart as a measure that would make us a safer, calmer nation. The recommendations of Dr. Downs are even more important than he writes about as I believe he touches upon the attitude of big business that creates tension in our country and delivers a message to young people that the future is going to be a lot rougher on them than the past has been on people in the world of work. Dr. Down's ideas should be put into practice soon, but I fear he is going to be one of many authors who will only be able to set back and say, "See I told you so."
Alan Downs demystifies downsizing.......1997-09-13
Alan Downs knows whereof he speaks when he details the rationale, strategies, and methodology of corporate downsizing in the 90's. His spellbinding expose is written from the standpoint of a converted "corporate reconstructionist," and he pulls no punches. He takes you behind the scenes, into boardrooms, managerial conferences, and strategy meetings, in which employees are little more than pieces of play on a game board, manipulated by corporate henchmen in an attempt to drain every last drop of profit from an undervalued workforce.
Mr. Downs' insightful, caring treatment of the workers' modern day employment dillemma both comforts and informs. If nothing else, the reader leaves with a greater understanding of why he or she has been buffeted about in the economic storm that has characterized the greedy 90's. Such understanding allows the victim of a layoff to salvage an othewrwise devistated sense of self worth, knowing that they are not alone -- that the fruits of "profits before people" ideology are widespread.
Corporate Executions is also recommended to the thoughtful exec who realizes that short-term profits derived from a decimated workforce are over-shadowed by negative factors engendered by trimming the sinew with the fat. Low worker morale, lost job knowledge, confusion as to job responsibilities, a general lowering of work accuracy, etc. plague workers to the detriment of the stated corporate mission and precious bottom line. Alan Downs' suggestions on how to structure a kinder, gentler, and, yes, more profitable company are well worth the read

This is a Bible of the 20th Century. Lucinda Vardey has compiled what I believe is the most comprehensive spiritual and religious writings of the most enlightened Men and Women of the past 100 years. I believe that our age has produced the most educated, wise, and experienced religous people in a millenium. The table of contents is a who's who of every religion's most respected scholars, poets, priests, monks, rabbis, ministers, sufis, and leaders and philosophers of this century. From Anglicanism to Zen, no religion is ignored with the most repected writers from each included with simple sentences, to a paragraph, and some are a half dozen pages. Arranged in chapters of spiritual processes and religous passages of Faith, one can open the book and begin anywhere and never stop reading it.

Lucinda Vardey's anthology of contemporary spiritual writing has been a gift to me since I received it in 1996, the year my son died of AIDS. I found so much healing in the words contained in this book and have used as a meditative tool and confort since my son's death. I espceially liked her chapters on death and on awe.
Brilliant! So much God in one book!.......2002-04-04
A very large and absolutely fantastic collection of contemporary spiritual writing put together by Lucinda Vardey. If you are interested in modern interpretations of God from EVERY religious and spiritual point of view, this is a great, BIG, introduction to a huge number of authors. Apart from anything else, you could save yourself a huge amount of time and money by buying this book!
Lucinda Vardey has divided the writings into 6 sections: The Quest, Revelation, Trials, Surrender, Death And The Etrernal Life, Awe, and sub-divided each of these sections into another 3 or 4 sections. I was already familiar with a handful of the huge number of masterful contributors, such as the "non-guru" Krishnamurti, physicist and Eastern mystic Fritjof Capra, rebel priest Matthew Fox, Zen writer Alan Watts, Christian and Narnia legend C. S. Lewis. But after intitial introductions through reading pieces in God In All Worlds, I went on to purchase or borrow books by holocaust survivor Viktor E. Frankl, Gary Zukav and Ken Wilber.
Several years after being bought this book, I am still occasionally dipping into it and discovering some new perspective on who or what God may be. Thank you Lucinda.
If you are a sceptic, please, read this book !.......2000-09-09
I considered myself an agnostic sometimes atheist, but was not happy with that choice, so I went on a "trip" to find out who or what God is. "God in all worlds" totally blew my mind with its insightfulness. Some of the essays are quite difficult to grasp but this is a book you have to read over and over again anyway, so its spiritual content can really sink in. I could only read this book with lots of breaks in between, it's so profound. The editor made an excellent choice in compiling the different chapters, and using authors from ALL religions makes reading about God especially valuable. I agree with the previous reader: if the house burns down, I'll grab this book first. And I no longer consider myself an agnostic or atheist, but rather a believer.
If the house is burning, I won't leave without this book !.......1997-11-21
Dare I say that a collection of spiritual writing has been created which rivals if not surpasses the life long value of the Bible (don't strike me down). The depth and richness of the content of this book rivals any other book I've read thus far. I won't lend it out for fear of missing it. Buy the hardcover... you'll be glad you spent the extra money for increased durability.
