Book Description

For over fifty years, the magnificent oak tree stood as a solitary landmark in the middle of the valley, witnessing the cool, wet winters and the hot, humid summers. Young pioneers established a new kibbutz nearby, celebrating their collective way of life in the shade of the tree.

Decades later, the kibbutz is not the same. Its members' idealism has changed. Can the community still be considered a kibbutz?

In this debut collection of stories, the author introduces you to kibbutz residents challenged with adapting to new realities. Along the way you'll see how kibbutzniks face up to the violence of the Intifada, cope with the Internet, and struggle to have more control over their lives.

Meet a clown who uses magic to heal the wounds of terror victims, a veteran dairy worker who has difficulties bidding farewell to an albino cow, a farmer who must decide what to do with the prize money of a lottery, and a reporter who is researching comedian Jerry Seinfeld's kibbutz past.

These are the stories of Israel's unique society, of the changes and dilemmas it faces, and of the hopes, challenges and dreams of those who continue to call the kibbutz their home.

"The Virtual Kibbutz Stories from a Changing Society" by Ellis Shuman i Universe Inc. 209 pp.

For many years, the kibbutz was the model institution of Israeli society. It represented the world's most successful example of socialist communal living, a near utopia of democracy and egalitarianism. In Israel itself, hard-working kibbutz members were seen as the 'new Jew,' freed of complexes of the Diaspora. They cultivated the land, were physically strong and independent, and engaged in productive labor. Kibbutz sons took on more than their share of command positions in the Israeli Defense Forces, where their dedication and sacrifice were an example for the society as a whole.

In recent years, however, the kibbutz has, like the socialist and in some cases communist ideology on which much of its principles were based, suffered a great decline. As Israel became a more capitalistic and free-market society, kibbutz ideology seemed outdated and less relevant. The kibbutzim themselves became, in many cases, non-profitable and had to be subsidized by huge government grants. Many of the young people, stultified by their small, closed world, left the kibbutz. A new political leadership arose in the country that no longer saw the importance of the kibbutz; settlement priorities were elsewhere. And the kibbutzim themselves evolved, with many of them adopting capitalism and becoming nothing more than bedroom communities.

As Israel changed, the general conception that developed was that the kibbutzim have had their day, and no longer have a real place or role in Israeli society.

Against this background of kibbutz in crisis and decline, a new light is shed in "The Virtual Kibbutz" (iUniverse, April 2003), by Ellis Shuman, a native of Sioux City, Iowa, who immigrated to Israel in 1972. Shuman, who served in the IDF, was a founding member of Kibbutz Yahel, and is now Editor-in-Chief of the online daily newmagazine Israel Insider has written a remarkable group of stories centering on encounters in the kibbutz. These stories not only give us much insight into the internal struggles and conflicts of the kibbutz, but they also provide a strong sense of hope and faith that the kibbutz and its members still have a great deal to contribute to Israeli society.

In one of the best stories of the collection, "The Clown and the Dancer," Shuman relates the story of two seemingly opposite figures - the graceful, happy, long-legged dancer Reli, and the short, awkward clown Itzik. Reli, who works as a hospital nurse, takes special care of a seven-year-old boy who was orphaned in a terrorist bombing. After inducing Itzik to come and try and break the shell of grief and silence that has enveloped the boy, Reli and Itzik draw closer, becoming a couple and planning to marry. But in the wake of the terrible suicide bombing in Netanya, during the Pesach Seder, Itzik is called to duty with his army unit to search out terrorists.

With quiet, emotional precision, Shuman tells the painful and tragic outcome of the story. In doing so, he also gives a restrained and yet moving account of the difficult life of Israelis in a time of constant terror and daily tragedies. Anyone who wishes to sense not only what life was like in the kibbutz during this time, but in Israel in general, will do well to read this story.

In another outstanding story, "The Fence," we learn of a friendship of many years between kibbutznik Giora, who works his citrus orchard, and his Arab neighbor Ibrahim, who tends his nearby olive grove. The story relates how this unusual friendship is tragically disrupted by the events of the past three years. Shuman again tells the story with a masterful restraint which nonetheless shows great human sympathy.

In other stories like the opening "Searching for Seinfeld" and "A Cow's Tale" (about a kibbutnik who develops strong emotional connection with one particular cow in the kibbutz dairy farm), Shuman shows a light and humorous side. In other stories, he describes kibbutzniks trying to adjust to their changed circumstances - a younger generation looking to adapt with the times and an older disheartened by the betrayal of its socialist ideals.

This central theme is explored in the long story "Requiem for a Dream," but is most powerfully developed in one of the best, and shortest stories of the collection. In "The Receding Shoreline," a kibbutz pioneer writes to his brother the story of his disappointment after fifty- three years on the kibbutz. "My dear brother, I cannot begin to describe the humiliation I feel. Once, when you were here with me, I was accepted as a pioneer, a founder of the kibbutz. Now I am considered nothing more than a burden, someone whose opinions, ideology and feelings no longer account for anything. I stood up against the change that was being forced upon my community and me; I swear I fought with all my might. I stood nearly all alone in the battle watching my dreams collapse around me."

But the mood of disappointment in this story is countered in the closing story, "A Balanced Picture," where a journalist tries to balance the gloomy, one-sided picture of kibbutz decline her television boss wishes to present sensationally to her audience. In meeting with a group called Equality Initiative, the journalist learns of an effort to introduce positive changes in the kibbutz without breaking its socialist framework. "Not every change comes at the expense of breaking the partnership of the cooperative community... Realistically speaking, there will be some kibbutzim that will cross the red line and change into communities that will no longer be defined as kibbutzim. In Israel, there are many types of communal settlements - kibbutz and moshav are but two examples. But while some kibbutzim may evolve into a different type of community, others will institute changes without crossing these lines."

This story leaves the reader with the feeling that the kibbutz will continue to play a positive role in the Israeli landscape.

Aside from the general depiction of the situation of the kibbutz now against its historical background, Shuman furnishes us with vital portraits of idealistic people, of struggling human beings who have a strong element of decency and desire to help their fellow human beings.

"

4 out of 5 stars The Changing Kibbutz.......2003-06-27

This is a provocative exploration of the gains and losses sustained by the kibbutz movement in relation to Israel's tumultuous history and fragmented culture. The author, who has experienced years of communal life as both a kibbutz member and now a moshavnik, has a great deal to say about ideology, continuity, and the fragile dream of the Zionist communal movement. A well-written and exciting collection of stories.

3 out of 5 stars THE HOUSE GETS BIGGER BY ONE.......2005-08-29

As sexual tensions increase between Aoi and Kaoru, their emotional intimacy does likewise. Kaoru finally opens up to her about his mother and the fact that he no longer knows whether his memories of her are reality or idealism. Kaoru's upcoming graduate school entrance exam is raising the anxiety level in the household, and all the girls seem to have their own special formula to give him good luck. Chika, Taeko's spunky cousin, shows up on the doorstep of the mansion and declares that she's moving in!

Ai Yori Aoshi is not a book to look for plot in. As I'm reading Volume 8 I sometimes question whether or not to continue the series. If it had outstanding characters, it would make up for the lack of events. I guess the reason why I keep reading is just the "mood" of the work. A mood which you could probably define as "sweetness and light". It's a love story and so it's more concerned with emotions and the displays of affection than leading the characters to revelations about the universe. But the lack of story progression in the past several volumes has led to a very repetitive manga. One that is still worth reading, at least, until you tire of it.

I would also recommend the manga Aria, another manga more concerned with mood than storytelling.

4 out of 5 stars More and more cuteness..........2005-03-24

There's something about the lovely young ladies of Ai Yori Aoshi that tugs at the heart strings. Each has their own distinctive personality; so much so that they are basically graphic representations of literary archetypes themselves.

The eighth volume of the series is pretty much more of the same that readers have come to expect of Kaoru's possible love interests. Several stories revolve around Chika-chan's innocent infatuation (and her talent at extremely cute, chibi-plushies) and her eventual move to the mansion. There are also a few chapters dealing with Aoi and Kaoru exclusively. It was especially touching to see him subtly introduce Aoi to his Mother in a scene that has been played out just as well in other grand romantic series (Maison Ikkoku comes to mind).

All in all, volume eight pleases in the various aspects it encompasses (cuteness, fanservice, romance, drama, comedy, etc.).

      Book Description

It is 1982. The United States has a permanent Moonbase. Richard M. Nixon is in the fourth term of the "imperial presidency." And an eccentric novelist named Philip K. Dick has just died in California.

Or has he? Psychiatrist Lia Pickford, M.D., is nonplussed when Dick walks into her office in small-town Georgia, with a cab idling outside, to ask for help. And Cal Pickford, a longtime Dick fan stunned by the news of his hero's death, is electrified when his wife tells him of the visit.

So begins a sequence of events involving Cal in the repressive Nixon regime, the affairs of an aging movie queen, a hip but frightened Vietnamese immigrant and an old black man who works as a groom--all leading up to a fateful confrontation between Dick, Cal, and Nixon himself on the moon.

5 out of 5 stars Being dead is just the start when there's no time.......2007-07-30

The original title of this book was "The Secret Ascension" and I'm not really sure which one works better, in all honesty. The current title is probably a little more evocative but a little misleading as well, since the book isn't really about Philip K Dick, not in the strict sense. Sure, he's in it and the book works in a few of his recurring themes, but in the end it comes perilously close to Bishop attempting to emulate a style that he doesn't have the mindset for. The setup for the book is great, taking place in a then-contemporary early eighties America where Richard Nixon is entering his fourth term and has turned the country into a near-fascist police state. We've won Vietnam and are currently engaged in "reorienting" the natives into our wonderful American way of life. Meanwhile dissent is actively crushed and matters are way closer to what everyone imagines Communist Russia was like. And in the midst of this, a faded writer named Philip Dick decides to have a stroke and die. Thus our story begins. Even though his name appears in the title, the author rarely appears in the book itself, after a bit in the beginning where he starts to interact with the characters, he sort of vanishes, maintaining a presence, although not an active one. The story focuses more on Cal Pickford, a Colorado native transplanted into Georgia with his wife. A big fan of PKD, he's trying to make a living in the new oppressive America, and finds himself actively engaged in trying to change it, almost against his will. Bishop's vision of a repressed America is actually quite well done and does feel real, which is something that Philip Dick was good at, circa "Man in the High Castle", for all the splits from known history, it does feel like ordinary people going about their lives. Cal and his wife come across as real characters, although the rest don't quite succeed as much, since they seem to exist more to push the plot along to wherever it needs to go. It seems at points that Bishop is trying to play with Dick's themes of different reality and rewriting our way into a better one. The thing is that Dick was able to convey the sheer weirdness of this in near psychedelic fashion, while letting the story remain somehow grounded. Bishop isn't quite up to that task and so the weirdness starts to feel way out of place, especially as the story reaches its climax and things start to make less sense. Dick was never big on explaining in his novels, preferring to let you make your own judgements, while here enough is laid out for us that we can get the scope of it, and it just doesn't resonate. Still, when he focuses on the ins and outs of this new wrong America, the book works pretty well, showing what happens when you let one person get too much power. More a homage than a recreation, Bishop does a credible job but at the same time only reinforces that the only person who could do Philip K Dick was, well, Philip K Dick. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

1 out of 5 stars If you like PKD, Do Not Read this book.......2006-09-13

Although the author's heart is in the right place, the book is sorely disappointing. Bishop captures none of the depth, anxiety, or mental displacement common to a Dick novel. Even Dick's characters, who aren't often noted for psychological breadth are superior to the ones in this book. I wanted to like this book, I really did, but it's failure really makes clear how unique an author PKD really was.

4 out of 5 stars More coherent than PKD, less weird.......2006-02-28

Dystopian SF novel (and homage to PKD) in which Richard Nixon is in his fourth-term and the US has become a right-wing police state. PKD comes back to earth as an angel of sorts (clad in a "resurrection body" like the one worn by Jesus on Easter) to help a few disparate free thinker/weirdos release the universe from the grasp of "King Richard" (who, it turns out, is possessed by a demon).

Although the ending was fairly hokey, the details of the novel are terrifyingly prescient, in that it describes the mindset and the modus operandi of the Bush administration to a T.

      3 out of 5 stars FAILED SEANCE.......2005-01-30

Alas, Bishop climbed aboard the PKD Express without a destination in mind. His attempt to contact the ghost of PKD only produced some raps on the ceiling. Using bumper sticker brevity, there was too much of this and not enough of that. Alas, too many of his characters had nothing to do but fester in their boring world. Dick, himself, usually gave his quirky characters an alternate world to escape into. This story's tacked on Brave New World ending, the "redemptive shift," a gift from super aliens, didn't quiet work.

Admittedly, it is difficult to develop character for a ghost. But giving him a craving for strong coffee doesn't quite do it. And it was hard for the other characters to react to the command, "Don't touch me." There were some interesting characters drawn. Cal Pickford, who idolized PKD much as the author Bishop must have, was very well developed. But most of the others were but wheels to keep the story moving, that alas, kept falling off. Still, not a bad read when you're snowed in for the winter.

4 out of 5 stars Good but still somehow lacking.......2004-03-08

This book is defenately worth reading but I do feel the need to write a slightly more critical review. Having read a lot of Dick's work this by comparison is disturbingly sane. I understand Michael Bishop was not trying to emulate, Dick, but, in that case, I would have liked to have seen something a little more original, something that explored and pushed the boundries of the way we see the world. Dick had a way of writing things that would toy with the reader and provoke them, of building up to something with logical and intelligent insite and then going right off the deep end. I miss that.

4 out of 5 stars It's Michael Bishop Doing PKD.......2002-04-25

Here the author set out to write his own Philip K. Dick novel. The characters resemble Philip Dick characters (my favorite is the guy with the obsession for Frank Miller DAREDEVIL comics): the protagonists are alienated misfits, the antagonists are mostly government authorities and wealthy people. The setting involves an oppressive regime in a slightly alternate world that nonetheless strongly resembles the contemporary United States. Paranoia genuinely bubbles out of the plot, and of course weird, metaphysical stuff happens toward the end of the story.

Philip Dick and his novels are subjects of discussion among the characters. PKD himself appears in the story ("Horsy Stout"), as he does in his own novels RADIO FREE ALBEMUTH and VALIS; although here he's more in the background.

Most of the novel retains the eerie, bleak, surreal edge that you can find in many PKD novels. I didn't like the ending quite as much as the first 90% of the story; but I can say that many of the PKD novels tend to disintegrate toward the end as well (e.g., DO ANDROIDS DREAM and PALMER ELDRITCH). But the ending to this one is harder to take seriously. And the whole thing's a bit too long (340 pages), considering that most of the PKD novels run to about 200 pages and never exceed 300 (not his science fiction).

On the whole, it's an entertaining psuedo-Dick novel. I haven't read anything else by Michael Bishop, but he certainly has done competent work with this story, I think.

3 out of 5 stars For PKD Fans in Search of Closure.......2000-05-26

First, a confession: I became a "Dickhead" last year, and ended up reading every single title ever published by Philip K. Dick. Once I finished the last book (including the Selected Letters), I was looking for some form of closure so I could get on with my life and read other authors. I found that closure in "The Secret Ascension."

Obviously written by a fan of PKD's work and personality, Bishop writes a book that is funny and imaginative, while mimicking, in a form of tribute, the style of PKD.

While the actual delivery of the story lacks the power of PKD's writing, there are many funny moments and tidbits of PKD for fans to enjoy. Bishop employs the multiple narrative technique and the breakdown of commonplace reality that fans of PKD expected with each novel.

The ending is quite satisfying, with a respectful nod to PKD's contribution to our "koinos cosmos." A must-read for any true PKD fan.

5 out of 5 stars Medieval Illuminations at there best.......2000-08-21

Many of the illuminations in this text are also in The Golden Haggadah - refer to the latter for the art history and criticism related to the illuminations.

This volume is a traditional Haggadah in Hebrew and English with illuminations from Medieval texts in the British Library. The result is a splendid, visually appealing book. The illuminations run from vines running down the margins of the page, to elaborate Hebrew letters, folk illustrations, and icon-like depictions of Biblical scenes. Here and there a bit of commentary on the contents of the ritual is included. It is clear that the hope of the authors that the Haggadah be not only a beautiful book on your shelf but also be used as a beautiful book in the celebration of Passover.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most engaging and interesting haggadahs.......1998-04-04

The Haggadah is beautiful and the text is authentic and easy to follow. It is not only an art book, it is a practical and useful haggadah for use during the seder. It brings Pesach to life and connects us to our history.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and usable hagaddah.......1998-03-07

This is a beautifully illustrated hagadah with rare images. The text is very easy to follow and the commentary is very helpful and insightful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Beautiful Haggadot Available.......2003-04-15

There are truly some beautiful artsy haggadot to be had without spending too much money. The Moss Haggadah is one of these. If you only look at the illustration on the cover, Dayenu! David Moss, who has served as an artist-in-residence at Camp Ramah, is a gifted artist who uses his talent to put forth his own interpretation of the midrash that is the haggadah.

My favorite representation is his B'khol Dor Vador (In Every Generation) spread in which he brilliantly includes small mirrors interspersed among depictions of our ancestors so that we may actually see ourselves as having been a part of the exodus from Egypt. It is nice to display some beautiful haggadot like Moss's during your seder and for the entire eight-day holiday for your guests to enjoy, and to help them gain more insight into the festival.

When you see the majesty of the Moss Haggadah, you won't have a problem spending a couple hundred dollars on this must-have haggadah.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Interpretation - Visual and Intellectual.......2000-07-06

Each generation throughout history produces its own interpretaion of the ancient haggadah. David Moss has created what I consider to be the most brilliant interpretation of the 20th century. Beneath his masterful art lies years of studying the traditional texts, revealing both a profound understanding of the words as well as the function of the haggadah. The rabbis who authored and edited these texts asked future generations to experience the exodus from Egypt as if we were there. Using this haggadah truly compels the reader to experience the story of the exodus by creating various levels of meaning through art and word. One sentence for example, asks us to see ourselves as if we went out of Egpyt. David, through a brilliant depiction of the verse, give us a mirrored reflection of our selves - and of people in various generations who also saw themselves as if they had gone out of Egypt. His added commentary is a profound interpretative resource. As a sofer with an appreciation of traditional Hebrew script and as a rabbi who has used and taught the haggadah for years, it is clear that this haggadah is truly a masterpiece of the 20th century. It needs to be used and found on every seder table.
