    Book Description

Winner of the 2005 Drue Heinz Literature Prize
Between Camelots is about the struggle to forge relationships and the spaces that are left when that effort falls short. In the title story, a man at a backyard barbecue waits for a blind date who never shows up. He meets a stranger who advises him to give up the fight; to walk away from intimacy altogether and stop getting hurt. The wisdom—or foolhardiness—of that approach is at the heart of each of these stories. In “I’ll Be Home,” a young man who has converted to Judaism goes home for Christmas in Miami, and finds that his desire to connect to his parents conflicts with his need to move on. “The Movements of the Body” introduces us to a woman who believes that she can control the disintegration of her life through a carefully measured balance of whiskey and mouthwash. These are stories about loss and fear, but also about the courage that drives us all to continue to reach out to the people around us.

3 out of 5 stars Again and again.......2007-07-12

I absolutely loved the first short story, "Misdirections" and purchased the book based on that story. I think it is exquisitely crafted. You can hear the author reading it on the Morning Stories podcast from WGBH.

Unfortunately the other stories that I read (I admit I didn't finish the book) don't live up to that 1st one. The main characters tend to be depressed and alienated, living self-destructive lifestyles or having relationship issues.

The stories might work well individually, but since I tried to read them one after another I found the similarity in tone repetetive and (not surprisingly) depressing. I plan to try to finish the book some day. That first story is so good that there must be some more hidden gems in there.

A good friend who never leads me astray when it comes to good books recommended this book to me, and I'm so glad he did. I love the very short stories in this book. I loved reading them in between the less short stories. They feel very unlabored and they work. I love how the stories tell the funny little things that happen inside peoples' heads while they're connecting or disconnecting with someone or someplace, or the idea of someone or someplace. How physically intimate people can be and yet make no real connection at all. Being deprived of what you are used to, and trying to get used to the way things have or have not become. Many, though not all of the stories deal with life's disappointments, and at the same time they are infused with a reassuring sense of humor that makes them a pleasure to read. I savored every page.

    5 out of 5 stars Between Camelots.......2005-10-08

This first collection is sharply drawn, quietly knowing, and at times, laugh-out-loud funny. David Ebenbach writes from a kind and clear-eyed place. These stories, like many, address love and loss, connection and disconnection, but Ebenbach finds a way to steal into our hearts. Each moment is worth savoring.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-10-03

Like the previous reviewer, I'm more likely to be reading mystery or fantasy than prize-winning 'serious' fiction. But I read through this in one sitting, every story getting me more engaged than the last. The author takes on perspectives that are different from my life, but in every story I see something of myself--a sentence, a feeling that resonates with me. This was a truly engaging read.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful -- Even for non-literary types.......2005-09-23

Although the book is billed as a collection of literary fiction, and I have no doubt it fits that bill, this self-proclaimed lover of trashy mystery novels found it absolutely wonderful. The stories are quick reads but the language is so rich and evocative you feel like you must have read more pages than you did to feel as involved as you do. Fantastic. A perfect gift for all the loved ones in your life. (Not to mention all of the almost-loved ones you have just missed in your life.)

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first.......2004-12-02

With more adventure and mystery, Sea Larks song is a great addition to Mother Ocean, Daughter Sea. There is but one thing i disliked about this book is that a lot of charecterization you were given before is repeated again in this book and even again a third time. I for one do not like to read things i all ready know multiple times. Doing this takes away from the story and prolongs it. Other than that I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who would ask.

3 out of 5 stars Not the greatest, but still pretty good.......2004-06-16

I got both books of this series as a Christmas gift. It's probably not what I would have selected for myself, but I certainly wasn't opposed to reading them.

The Good: Marcellas really excels both at the politics of her kingdom, and presenting them to the reader. I will openly admit that in a lot of books, I'll skim the political stuff because it usually bores me, but in this one, it is the main attraction. The conspiracies are crisp and twisty and intriguing. Marcellas also refuses to paint characters in black and white as the "good guys" or "bad guys" which makes the book a really intriguing read-- in a lesser writer, Melfallen's wife would have be pigonholed as drippy, whiny, or bitchy, but here, she's presented as a troubled woman who just isn't right for her husband; no sin of her own. Characters change sides and change their minds; the book is a thrilling ride for the reader.

The Bad: There's a lot of bad fantasy in the world. A LOT. This is not the worst. But it's not perfect either. The narraction is way too dramatic-- everything is tragic or passionate or breathtaking. Brierley herself is so frequently described as so amazingly perfect and lovely and wonderful as a person that I could barely relate to the character at all. It's almost like Marcellas is a little too excited about her own book.
The second criticism is that there is some really strange moral ground in this book. The main character is supposed to be extremely sympathetic and caring, but in the first book, kills a man and doesn't seem particularly troubled about it, later. (Granted, he was nasty, but still) The characters seem to live in an extremely liberal society that just happens to also have a feudal government. Women are generally accepted in most professions, divorce is perfectly acceptable and a handful of other social practices just seem a little... disjointed.
Also, there are a few plot twists that just don't work, and just come off as stupid; i.e., is there anyone in this stupid place who ISN'T shari'a?

Overall, I feel like Marcellas has a lot of talent as a writer, she just lacks some polish. The shari'a books will drive you crazy sometimes, and at least one "Oh, PLEASE" will probably escape your lips, but they're a fun read, and I, for one, can't wait for the next one.

          5 out of 5 stars excellent tale-telling.......2004-03-09

I didn't realize this was the second in a series when I bought it. No matter, it explains itself well. I really enjoyed it, especially in that the plot is sufficiently complex and only got more so as the book went on, and that all the characterization is sound and attractive. I will definitely be buying the rest of the trilogy and likely anything else the author comes up with. It is a clearly seen World, with no distressing over-similarities to any other fantasy realms I'm familiar with. The magic is neither cheesy nor impossible to understand. I don't see any real flaws in this book, and recommend it to lovers of Morgan Llywelyn, Andre Norton, Robin McKinley and Cecilia Dart-Thornton.

3 out of 5 stars Keep Going ..........2003-11-07

The first book, "Mother Ocean, Daughter Sea," was wonderful in the way is built complex characters in which no one person was completely evil or good. The inner workings of the personalities are beautifully woven into the plot development. However, it irked me how the book just stopped at the end!

Of course, I immediately began to read the second book, "The Sea Lark's Song." I felt you needed a scorecard to keep track of the nobelity past and present. It seemed to introduce too many new characters without much substance. Again, the book just stopped at the end without any real conclusion or how all the new characters fit together with the ever-convoluted plot.

However, interesting the setting and characters are, I feel like I'm being strung along and tend to lose interest in series that seems to continue indefinately. I would recommend you read this book only if you can patiently await the next (hopefully last book) in the series. I, personally, tend to enjoy books that can stand on their own and only need the previous or next book in the series as garnishment.

4 out of 5 stars when's the next one coming??.......2003-11-04

This book was, overall, terrific. The word "lusty" may have been used one too many times... but I digress. Aside from a few overused words, I think this book is right on par with the first in the series. I can't wait for the third to come out!

I read this book when it first came out around 15 or so years ago. The story really truly touched me and I regret the fact that I did not purchase the book at that time. (Read a library edition)
Since then, I moved to a completely different region of the world, and am anxious to get my new used copy sent to me so I can pour into a story that I've been longing to read again, since I've been trying to procure a copy of it for 10 years now!
If you are considering purchasing this book - don't hesitate. It is THAT good.

I also read this book in high school and it stays with me to this day, 12 years later, as the best book I have ever read. Paul's generosity and the relationships he developed were truly touching. What an amazing story.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing and very touching impact on the reader........1998-12-13

I read this book when I was only fifteen years old and, still, ten years later and of all the books I've read since it is the only book that still stands out in my mind. I have searched high and low for it since but have not been able to locate a copy. It's a shame because it is hard to find such writing from the heart these days.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome story of a man helping Vietnamese orphans.......1998-07-17

This story will have you laughing, crying and wishing there was some way that you could have helped care for all the orphans. From the very beginning when Paul meets the nuns and the orphans, you will anxiously continue turning the pages to see what happens next. My favorite part of the book is the growing relationship between Paul and Thom. It is a beautiful book and will leave you wondering what Paul is doing now.

1 out of 5 stars The Cry of Boredom.......2004-06-01

This is not the worst Star Trek novel out there (see Triangle), but it may very well be the most dull, tedious, and downright booorrrring. Kirk and the gang go to a pre-warp planet, one which the Federation has been in touch with for decades (so much for the Prime Directive). Meanwhile, something is going on with Miri and the "Onlies" back on that planet that oh so coincidentally looks exactly like Earth. Just what that something is, I can't say as I didn't make it that far. Trek books are supposed to be mindless entertainment; this one was just mindless.

2 out of 5 stars Decent concept, poorly written........2003-05-01

The plot and the idea behind this book were interesting, interesting enough to hold my attention in spite of the poor writing. And with a few minor quibbles, ("computer consul" instead of "console", for instance) when I say "poor writing", I'm not speaking of sloppy typos, poor grammar or word choice. What I'm talking about is characters that behave in implausible ways (no, I'm being too kind; downright impossible ways). The character interaction just rings blatently untrue. I can suspend disbelief for Warp drives and matter transportation, but I CANNOT suspend disbelief for the young, successful revolutionaries who, after fighting a long and bloody insurrection against arrogant, ruthless, bloody-handed oppressors remain idealistic enough to treat their enemies with a kind and restrained justice, yet are aware enough of the realities of real-politic to be willing to treat with the Romulans and the Klingons if that's what it takes to secure their planet's economic survival. Nor do I believe in a United Federation of Planets that tacitly supported said oppressive previous regime. There are many other examples of similarly dubious interactions in the book; some I cannot detail here without giving away too much of the conclusion of the book. Suffice it to say that the ending was far too pat, and continued to have characters behaving in ways that simply did not fit in with their established characterizations.

Not in the bottom ten of Star Trek novels, but close to it.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best..............1999-03-27

There have been many more interesting Trek Novels than this one, but it DOES give some answers of what happens to the onlies. I think that Judy Klass will be a good author, but she needs a little bit more practice first. And maybe it would help if the plots were a little more interwoven, ya know, so they would tie in together more. Nevertheless a decent book.

4 out of 5 stars Kirk and past meet.......1998-10-12

I thought that this book was truely thought out, and had a good plot to it aswell. It answered many questions of what had happened to the children after Kirk and co. left especially Miri. It's not a page turner, but never the less it is a good book, and a good story to sink yourself into.

The book was written to create change in individual life. To creatively and humorously give an understanding that love still exist and life is larger than us. The balance of life is within our minds and spirits but we must continue to search. In this case, I have created this balance through two fictitious characters, Rip and Minnie. Their unstable and doubtful urges have overwhelmed and taken over their state of being and their state of mind. They have become so comfortable in their past activities and their small perception of life. When change began it put so much pressure on them, they rather push themselves and each other away to involve themselves in their urges. In this case, love becomes their change. Still, they battle their own inhibitions and the iniquities of others wishing to divide and conquer all. Yet, the power of love so strong and so endearing has given them only a little touch and its' craft a wonderful feeling of change within them and all characters in this book. They know they do not need each other but they do want to need each other which creates a truth and a truce in a time where battles are leaders and war will become the ultimate conqueror. Still, somehow, someway love conquers all.

                              Book Description

There are many icons of Mary that show black faces and hands. In France, these are called Vierge Noires—Black Virgins. Elsewhere, may be called Black Madonnas or the "other Mary." Jung called her Isis, while others claim she is the symbolic remains of a prehistoric worship of the Earth Mother. She is generally connected with Cybele, Diana, Isis, and Venus, as well as with Kali, Inanna, and Lilith. Historically she is connected with the Crusades, the Islamic occupation of Spain, the Conquistadors, as well as the Merovingians and Knights Templars, who viewed her as Mary Magdalene.

Why are more than five hundred of the world's Madonna images black or dark? Why is so little known about them? Black Virgins—a resurfacing of the powerful pagan goddesses of sexuality, the underworld, and earth wisdom—they are symbols of power and majesty, the other side of the traditional Madonna's virginity or tender maternity. They personify the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant in a quest for lost feminine wisdom and the search for soul.

Ean Begg's fascinating book investigates the pagan origins of the phenomenon as well as the heretical Gnostic-Christian underground stream that flowed west with the cult of Mary Magdalene and resurfaced in Catharism at the time of the Crusades, especially with the Templars.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating but tough reading.......2005-01-02

If you are fascinated with the goings-on of early Christianity and have been following the growing litany of books - both semi-serious (Holy Blood, Holy Grail) or fanciful (Da Vinci Code) - this book belongs on your reading list.

Make no mistake about this work. It is a serious treatise, with a focus on the historical sources of the cult of the Black Virgin. The author notes that many of the more than 500 images of the Black Virgin found in Western Europe in general and France in particular were created around the time of the Crusades (1100-1300). He draws some interesting parallels between Catharism, the Knights Templar, and the quest for the holy grail. He also discusses the Mergovingian dynasty and even the Abbe Sauniere (who is featured so prominently in current fiction). But the general thrust and importance of this work is to identify the locations and possible origins of the Black Virgin icons. Begg's writing is dense, dispassionate, and frankly tough going in many spots. His gazeteer and maps are of great importance for those interested in this aspect of religious history, whether or not you're a believer.

5 out of 5 stars Europe's Hidden Black Madonna Tradition.......2004-01-16

Christian Europe's ancient artistic interpretations of the Mother of God and the infant Son of God as dark fleshed is vastly too little known. Fortunately, despite the countless loss of such images through the natural ravages of time, church fires, numerous religious wars, revolutions, and also intentional discolorings passed off as "restoration," there are still quite enough of these paintings and statues left to discern that Europe's devotion to a Mary fashioned as a black woman is as ancient as it was widespread. From Spain to Sicily, hundreds of these sacred tools of worship can still be found quietly preserved in churches, shrines, museums and in numerous private collections. In the interest of preserving as much knowledge as possible regarding mankind's most ancient representation of the Deity, Ean Begg has created a priceless volume which dutifully fulfills a most necessary purpose.

3 out of 5 stars More Myth Than Fact.......2000-06-06

I was disappointed that this short book (the text is only about 150 pp) was more about the myths concerning everything from Sumerian goddesses to Marian apparitions than about history and fact concerning the Black Virgin (BV) sites. The author mixes myth and fact so much that is hard to tell what he believes to be true and real. There is nothing wrong with exploring myths, but it makes difficult reading trying to constantly separate them from any kernels of fact that may be there.

I was looking for more on reasons and history of the BV sites in Europe. Maybe their origins are so obscured in history as to make this an impossible task.

The bulk of the book is a gazetteer of the BV sites in Europe. For anyone who plans to travel in Europe -As I plan to soon, this would be valuable to have along.

There is some information concerning the Templars, Mary Magdalene, Bernard de Clairveaux, and others, but there are many better books on these subjects. I would recommend: Holy Blood, Holy Grail; The Woman With the Alabaster Jar, and The Second Messiah for starters.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to know.......1999-12-24

The book is very detailed and most informative when it comes to the black madonna cult. It deals with almost everything, if not all, of the ancient goddesses, and some of the gods - from Egypt to Greece. I also got very eerie when I was reading about some of these Goddesses activities. I liked very much the summary on the relevance and relationship of The Templars, Cathars to the Black Goddesses cult! The author also touches the crux of Gnosticism and shows how it relates to the above three Orders. Its conclusion regarding why the statues of the virgin are black, is not that explicit, but during the whole text the author does inform the reader of all the reasons as to its blackness, and indeed you will draw your conclusions! All in all, a very good book on the subject. Get it!

I have been a student of Dr. Rey's at Florida International University and his knowledge of Haitian religion and social climate is extensive. He is a bonifide expert. Not only has his research come from books, but his understanding is from his first hand experience living in Haiti for a time. This book is rich with history of the Caribbean slave trade, Haitian independence, and the social/political/religious turmoil of the 20th century. All these factors contribute to the way relationship between the Virgin and the Haitian people is percieved and how the Virgin is used by the elite and the underpriviledged. At the same time, there is the undeniable influence of the vibrant and empowering religion of Vodou, which fuses the Virgin with Ezili, "lwa" of sex, love, and beauty. To outsiders who frequently misunderstand or are outright prejudiced against the people poorer countries and/or African religion, this book provides an accurate picture of Haiti and teaches that one of the world's most beautiful, poetic, colorful, and life-affirming religions came from a people who suffered through great atrocities and oppression because all they had was their creativity and spirituality to sustain them.
