    Book Description

This exciting volume joins such volumes as Theissen's The Shadow of the Gaililean in combining first-rate biblical scholarship with a fictionalized first-person account of a biblical character. Presented as a "recently discovered" cache of documents from the ninth century BCE, The Jezebel Letters draws the reader into an assassination conspiracy supported by the era's most notorious biblical character, Queen Jezebel. Her letters and memoirs, interwoven with the sometimes conflicting contemporary accounts of the Bible and ancient Near Eastern documents, re-create the century's religious, political, military, and economic developments in the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. But these public aspects, which have traditionally been described in terms of their male actors, are told here from the perspective of a royal woman. Generously illustrated with line drawings, The Jezebel Letters is solidly based on historical research, archaeological excavation, and familiarity with the region's geography and material culture.

5 out of 5 stars It Gets Better Every Time I Read It.......2005-10-18

It's such a shame that this book is out of print. The premise is deceptively simple, at least at first glance. It is narrated by Kate, who is growing up in 1970's North Carolina. She and the other characters are so well-rendered, so realistic in speech and action, that nothing about this book seems contrived or forced. It gives the reader a look at change and at second chances that come in unexpected and sometimes unwanted ways. It's also about realizing that people and things are not always what they appear. It's about growing up. This is a slower, character-driven novel, both humorous and sad. I think teenagers and adults would enjoy it.

    5 out of 5 stars Ferris Beach.......2001-11-16

Ferris Beach is a great realistic book of a young girl who learns many things through tragic events. She dreams that Ferris Beach is the perfect place to live but learns that's not exactly true. This is a good book for anybody that too have realized life isn't perfect but there are good parts. Also that you can't judge a book by it's cover but you have to look on the inside.

    5 out of 5 stars A book worth reading.......2000-07-11

Reviewer- Ashley from Franklin, TN nited States This book focuses on the life of a girl in Southern North Carolina. Her mother, a well-cultured woman from Boston, tries to make the girl Kate have the kind of lifestyle that she had. Her father, a layed-back easy-going man, lets Kate choose whichever lifestyle she wishes to have. This book is full of pain and sadness; heartache and happiness. I recommend this book to teenagers, as a teenager, I feel I can relate to it and hope that others who read this book will also like it and relate to it.

Book Review of Ferris Beach by Jill McCorkle

Ferris Beach is a book that is filled with many details of the characteristics of a small-town. It gives an intimate portrait of each character and their personality. The novel takes place in the south in the 1970's during a time of change. The young girl in the book reveals several details about her family and friends whom she is very close to. The reader can easily become attached to the characters by using a vivid imagination, which allows them to relate personally from their own experiences. The author, Jill McCorkle, touched on every subject that could possibly affect any person who reads it. Kate, whom some would call the heroine of the novel, was at an age where everything in her life could have a lasting effect. She was very impressionable. Her immediate family and her distant relatives could be considered opposites, but Kate loved them all. She was cought in a tug-of-war between what her gut feelings compelled her to do, and doing what she knew would be the right thing. That is something very hard to deal with. There are also friends and neighbor's who contribute the uneasy atmosphere of the community. There are a few twists and turns in the story which capture the reader even more intensely. This story can make the reader sad, or be cheery at the same time. Jill McCorkle has a way with words which allows the reader to feel those emotions. Many have said that she is the finest writer, not just in the south, but anywhere. She is real and authentic with her writing. She expresses real situations, real emotions, and real human nature. The characterizations in Ferris Beach are very well developed and may sometimes resemble someone we know. All of these aspects summarize why this is a great book to read and recommend to others.

Duck's day at the beach comes in the form of a padded cloth book with a sturdy zipper, a handle, and a flap. When closed tight, the book is transformed into a small carrying case. When toddlers lift the flap, they see the sun shining down on the duck as he plays in the sand. Unzip the case, open the pages, and kids will discover Duck's summer cottage, a tiny detachable beach bag, and a cloth trunk holding beach playthings. Outside on the beach they'll find a souvenir stand—and every scene includes padded cloth beach items attached to pages with Velcro tabs, or moved from one page to the next as Duck enjoys his day at the beach.

Theodore Bryan, poor and ragged, sits on the curbstone dejectedly. Homeless and lonely, it seems nobody cared about him. At that lonely moment, a voice above him questions, "Well, my boy, aren't you coming into church?" It is the voice of the bishop, who from that day forth influences Theo deeply. To him the boy's heart goes out in reverential love. To be like "the bishop" is not easy, but Theo changes his life in remarkable ways. Once a rough street boy who stole and lied, now his desire is to be "The Bishop's Shadow". No one can read this book unmoved. Theo's generosity in carrying bread, soup, or bright flowers into the poor tenement houses is quite challenging. His purpose and perserverance in searching for Jack Finney is surprising. Above all, his resolve to follow in the bishop's footsteps, and his great longing to behold once more that noble face is truly heart-breaking. This true story of the 1800s apepals to all ages. You will enjoy reading it again and again.

Too often, fantasy fiction is reduced to the good guy vs. the bad guy. But what happens when the two of them grew up together, and were the best of friends? It seems as if Tithian and Agis should try to destroy each other immediately, but memories of their past together are too powerful for that. Therein lies the strength of this book. Denning shows us the shattered friendship from both men's perspective, and takes the edge off absolutes of "good" and "evil.&quot

                            ** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
The tangled web of vengeance, love, and loss woven by Spider-Man comics and films is explored in this collection of insightful essays by acclaimed writers of comics and science fiction. A variety of topics—from the superhero’s sarcasm to the science behind radioactive spiders—are discussed in essays on "Turning Rage into Responsibility: A Psychology of Loss," "Love Is Selfish: Can a Hero Afford Personal Attachments?," and "Self Identity and Costume Design." The popular rival Green Goblin, the bumbling-yet-influential media, and the part New York City itself plays in stories are skillfully explored, as is the overall philosophy of mild-mannered Peter Parker and Spidey’s relationship with the rest of the characters in the Marvel universe.

This book operates very well on its premise: A bunch of essays about Spider-Man. It has a myriad of opinions on the Marvel Universe, and, what I liked particularly, it incorporated the events of Marvel's Civil War up to the point where the webhead unmasks himself. It was refreshing to know that these geeks (how else can you describe authors that psychoanalyze Spider-Man?) aren't stuck in their thoughts that they formulated when they were teenagers.

That being said, I did disagree with a few of the attacks/observations, and there were some superfluous interjections by the authors (science being the only thing to save mankind, for instance) that lessened the impact. Still, one of the best essays included quotes from the Bible, John Stuart Mills, Kierkegaard, and William Shakespeare, all of which harmonized with the point the author made of the wallcrawler. Not too shabby.

I'm going to err on the side of enthusiasm for the subject matter in giving it a five star rating; it probably deserves a four and a half. I enjoyed it, even if it was too short a read (you could easily knock this sucker out on a nice Saturday afternoon) and stuttered through the occasional typo.

In sum: great read for the thinking Spidey-phile.

The Complete Idiot's Guide series that has taught us how to do everything from making beer, playing bridge, and fishing to gambling, and living with a cat now ventures into the arena of prayer. Although this may seem like a crass and commercial undertaking, it is certainly true that many people feel unworthy or inadequate when trying to give voice to a prayer. As a primer on Christian prayer, this could be the boost that helps a beginner or a doubter take the leap of faith and start a dialogue with God.

Typical of the Complete Idiot's Guide style, the format uses plenty of cartoon-like illustrations, loads of informative tidbits, and most importantly a warm, reassuring voice that takes a complicated issue and breaks it down into manageable bites. Chapter 1 explores "What Prayer Isn't (and Is)." For example, it is not "Self-Help," a "Cosmic Shrink," "Wishin' and Hopin'," or "Hyperspiritualizing." According to authors Galli and Bell, prayer is a conversation with God. "Prayer is less like making a speech and more like talking to a friend." This kind of relaxed yet highly respectful approach toward prayer characterizes much of the book's wisdom. Readers who aren't interested in exploring prayer through a Christian lens probably won't find this guidebook useful. Others, even aficionados, will probably appreciate the down-to-earth discussions on "Suffering," "Praying the Gospels," and "Dealing with Doubts: No Answers." --Gail Hudson

This book is a keeper. Easy to read and full of insight. I just recently returned to my Christain roots and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Prayer helped answer a question that many of us are afraid to ask; "How do you pray?" I've seen it done hundreds of times but it's all so mysterious. This book explains a variety of options to mix it so that prayer doesn't become a chore. As with all Complete Idiot's Guides, this book contains all the information that most of us want without the dull details.

It had to happen sooner or later, I suppose. Just about every topic is getting its Complete Idiot's Guide. I have one on Angels, another on Internet. My niece has one on cooking. And now they've (the publisher) sent me one - on prayer - The Complete Idiot's Guide to Prayer, by Mark Galli and James S. Bell, Jr. (Alpha Books / Macmillan USA, Inc., 1999, softcover) In 33 chapters spread over six parts, the book takes the reader through ideas about prayer as talking with God and into prayers like the Our Father and the Jesus Prayer and using the Psalms and the Gospels for prayer. With a very readable style and format, the book provides those little blurbs common to the "Idiot's Guide" - in this case - Prayer Pearls from the Good Book, When You Haven't Got a Prayer, Meanings and Gleanings, and Prayer Hotline. Drawing content mostly from Jewish / Christian traditions and sources, the book's authors also delve into mystical prayer, liturgical prayer, singing prayer, and praying with others. These authors give suggestions for distractions, doubts, even "dark night of the soul" in prayer. Two appendixes offer formulated prayers for many situations. Meant as a primer, the book can assist anyone at any prayer level toward meaningful meditation and a prayer-integrated life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and old-timers.......2000-03-26

Have reviewed a number of books on prayer and they usually get too complicated and bogged down. This Idiot's Guide to Prayer is a refreshing look at a very old subject. I loved the simplicity without compromising integrity to the authority of Scripture.

Starting with a few basics, Galli and Bell then go on to look at The Lord's Prayer as a model but also an instruction on what prayer is really all about. The book includes several prayers for different occasions, takes a look at the Episcopal "Book of Common Prayer," and using the Psalms as part of our prayers.

I've chosen this book for an Adult Bible School Class on prayer, hoping to attract a number of people who think of themselves as novices or "idiots" on the subject of prayer. I'll also invite some people known for their prayer lives to participate in the class to help with the discussion and to possibly mentor people who are really struggling with prayer.

The central point I have so greatly appreciated is the authors' firm view that prayer is really only a part of our relationship with God.

I purchased this book online, sight unseen. I was expecting something like a manual or guide helping me develop my own prayer life. However, this book was a compilation of beautiful prayers written by other people. It is probably a worthwhile book if you are looking for a prayer resource book.
