If Windhaven weren't a fantasy book, it would be a selection for Oprah's books club, in the best sense. It tells the life story of a girl whose desire is so strong that it literally changes her world.

Maris wants nothing more than to fly. But she is land-bound: she was not born into a family of flyers, those who inherit their wings from their ancestors and convey messages, songs, and stories between the isolated islands of Windhaven. She convinces the flyers to break their ancient dynastic traditions for a selfish reason--to gain a pair of wings. In so doing, however, she opens the skies to all the hopeful land-bound, with serious social and political repercussions for both populations.

Each of the five chapters relates a different incident in Maris's struggle to first become a flyer and to then open the skies, and the flyers' minds, to the rest of the land-bound. They are told in sequential order as Maris ages, but resemble short stories featuring the same character more than chapters in a novel. Although the background in each certainly enhances the understanding of the following one, this knowledge is not at all essential to appreciating each chapter as a discrete entity that can stand alone.

Windhaven is a thought-provoking book, challenging us by depicting the potential consequences when young idealists break ancient traditions. The authors gave us a heroine, a planet, and a story that teach as they entertain. --Diana M. Gitig

          Book Description

George R. R. Martin has thrilled a generation of readers with his epic works of the imagination, most recently the critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling saga told in the novels A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and A Storm of Swords. Lisa Tuttle has won acclaim from fans of science fiction, horror, and fantasy alike— most recently for her haunting novel The Pillow Friend. Now together they gift readers with this classic tale of a brilliantly rendered world of ironbound tradition, where a rebellious soul seeks to prove the power of a dream.

The planet of Windhaven was not originally a home to humans, but it became one following the crash of a colony starship. It is a world of small islands, harsh weather, and monster-infested seas. Communication among the scattered settlements was virtually impossible until the discovery that, thanks to light gravity and a dense atmosphere, humans were able to fly with the aid of metal wings made of bits of the cannibalized spaceship.

Many generations later, among the scattered islands that make up the water world of Windhaven, no one holds more prestige than the silver-winged flyers, who bring news, gossip, songs, and stories. They are romantic figures crossing treacherous oceans, braving shifting winds and sudden storms that could easily dash them from the sky to instant death. They are also members of an increasingly elite caste, for the wings—always in limited quantity—are growing gradually rarer as their bearers perish.

With such elitism comes arrogance and a rigid adherence to hidebound tradition. And for the flyers, allowing just anyone to join their cadre is an idea that borders on heresy. Wings are meant only for the offspring of flyers—now the new nobility of Windhaven. Except that sometimes life is not quite so neat.

Maris of Amberly, a fisherman's daughter, was raised by a flyer and wants nothing more than to soar on the currents high above Windhaven. By tradition, however, the wings must go to her stepbrother, Coll, the flyer's legitimate son. But Coll wants only to be a singer, traveling the world by sea. So Maris challenges tradition, demanding that flyers be chosen on the basis of merit rather than inheritance. And when she wins that bitter battle, she discovers that her troubles are only beginning.

For not all flyers are willing to accept the world's new structure, and as Maris battles to teach those who yearn to fly, she finds herself likewise fighting to preserve the integrity of a society she so longed to join—not to mention the very fabric that holds her culture together.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Nice read.......2007-02-28

These are my unprofessional impressions of the story:

          1) Characters are personable; realistic (flawed). I found myself empathizing with the questionable ones and angered by some of the 'good' ones.
          2) The book is divided into 3 slices of the life of Maris, the main character, and contrasts nicely the differences between tradition and (r)evolution without getting moralistic or preachy. There is no final opinion given as to which way of life was better for Windhaven, so you are left to think and decide for yourself.
          3) The pace of the book is good, until the last part. It feels a bit redundant at times and takes away some of the momentum that was built from the first parts -- but it accomplishes its purpose to bring the story to a close.
          4) The prose is easy to read; the experience is not bogged down with unnecessary verbiage.

You'll never know if you're going to like the story unless you try reading it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes stories set in non-existent worlds and doesn't need constant action or buildup to keep their interest going.

          2 out of 5 stars mechanical exercise.......2006-05-07

This book is more of an intellectual exercise of the consequences of a single action. Maris wants to join the elite flyers of Windhaven and her action drives the plot of the book.

The characters are two-dimensional and the plot unfortunately plods along with all the drama of a funeral march. The book is divided into three sections of Maris' life. We see her grow from child to old woman, however, I never had much empathy for her as a character.

It was refreshing to see that loose ends do not get tied neatly up when it comes to relationships. Sensitivity to the ups-and-downs of love affairs in general was a strength of the book even if it was handled in a dry way.

The book tries to deal with complex politics of the flyers versus the land-bound. This was done with a psuedo-sophistication that I found irritating. The politics of real life are in no way mirrored in the mechanics of the plot. That was the biggest disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars The Bildungsroman for Britney Spears fans.......2006-03-30

the struggles of the unfortunate child/orphan to achieve his/her dreams in a a world dominated by inimical class/gender/race/religious prejudice is as old as the world. It takes masters like Dickens or Kipling to shape the theme into masterpieces. If you liked Anne McCaffrey's Dragonsinger story, you might enjoy this one. If you have already read "song of ice and fire", DON'T read it, it would be a let down. Take Donaldson's "Gap" series instead, or Peter Hamilton.

2 out of 5 stars Fails to soar.......2005-12-05

As a fan of Geaorge Martin's magnum opus, A Song of Ice and Fire, I was excited to read Windhaven. It is a story of one girl's efforts to turn tradition upside down and join an elite group of airborne messengers. There is a lot of whining and hand wringing with the central character able to see all sides of an argument to an almost pathological degree. The settings and the premise are interesting, but the characters never get beyond two dimensions. There are some crazy time shifts too, where decades pass withoiut warning. As an exercise in showing how our actions, no matter how noble, can be the source of pain and anguish, it worked. A ripping yarn it is not.

3 out of 5 stars Too many tears, too little tension.......2005-06-08

I picked up this book because I'm a big fan of George R.R. Martin's epic Song of Ice and Fire series. But this appears to be something completely different. The only similarity being the high quality of writing. The story shows different parts of the life of a woman who loves nothing but flying. She has a big influence on the world around her, changing old traditions that have hurt both individuals and her society as a whole. But the changes she brings about also have a big influence on herself. I found characters and plot to be reasonably interesting, though not very compelling. There are too many tears in this book, and there is too little tension. I felt that the woman's touch (Lisa Tuttle) was far more recognizable than the man's touch (George R.R. Martin). Some readers may like that, I didn't.

5 out of 5 stars A Dynasty of Love, Lust, and Treachery..........2001-11-19

It is 1883, and the fiery trauma of war & reconstruction that torched the Old South has settled deep into the rich soil of the once glorious Windhave Plantation. Amid swarms of carpetbaggers clamoring for the spoils of war, crops fail and markets fall. And Laure Bouchard Kenniston, still beautiful and proud, now reels from a searing, tragic shock - the suicide of her second husband, Leland.

Young Lecien Bouchard, with all the fabled courage of his family name, strikes out to save the struggling plantation his father founded, exalted, and loved. But little Paul, Laure's son, in agony for his mother's tribulation and his own helplessness, runs away to the shadowy world of railroad hobo's and twilight thievery.

Yet even now, the South stirs to rise again, and the great Bouchards of Windhaven batter the doors of destiny, a family dauntless in the face of disaster, rich in pride, endless in love.

5 out of 5 stars Banzai Girl by Jinky Coronado.......2007-08-23

I really enjoyed reading every issue of Banzai Girl that was published. It has everything I look for in a comic book or Manga. It has great stories with plenty of action and the art work is some of the best that I've seen anywhere. Now that it's being published by Arcana as Banzai Girls, I can once again enjoy the all new adventures of Jinky and her friends.

A fresh look at being a school girl, through the eyes of a woman who's been there and. . .well, done SOME of that, at least. The perfect book for that occasional day where you wish to kick back and let your imagination off it's leash. This one stands out among the many books crowding the rack. I have yet to hear a negetive review.

Banzai Girl creator Jinky Coronado's four comic books and initial annual are packaged in a quality compilation that also includes special features on her life, artwork, and guest drawings. For fans of this beautiful and talented lady, this is a rewarding collection of her work. To those who are new to the world of Banzai Girl, she offers a refreshing new concept; a diamond waiting to be discovered by much of the comic book world. The story is based on the creator/artist's life- a young woman whose talents match her grace and appreciation to her growing legion of fans. In the stories, our short-skirted, pigtailed heroine battles mythical legends of the Philippines, including shadow whisperers, a giant snakeman, and even a female vampire that can split its body in two at the waist. As pretty as this little lady is in the comic book, she really knows how to handle herself in a fight.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best books on prayer I have read.......2007-06-08

David Jeremiah is one of my favorite authors. He makes Scripture easy to understand with vivid illustrations. This book will help any serious Christian understand how God wants to use prayer to get us on the same page with Him. This book has transformed my prayer life and I have challenged our church with many of its principles.

I never received this book. Still waiting. Thought it was still on back order.

5 out of 5 stars How can Prayer really be an adventure?.......2005-10-09

Dr. Jeremiah gives practical advise for those who truly want to communicate with God. He interprets the scriptures in simple terms, "Ask don't beg" "too busy not to pray" and also adds the dimension of his own experience dealing with Cancer. He does not talk "down" to the reader, but takes him into his confidence and even inserts personal notes from his journal. He breaks down the "Lord's Prayer" into practical terms, showing us (the reader) how we can apply each area.
This book is one, I feel, that cannot be read at one sitting, but should be taken showly, a chapter at a time, and "digested"
before preceeding to the next phase. It is a book that could be
read by a young person or a person of more mature years. It is a book that I will read again and again and would unhesitantly recommend to any "disciple".

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book on Prayer.......2005-07-26

Dr. David Jeremiah's book PRAYER, THE GREAT ADVENTURE is an excellent book on developing a solid, biblical prayer life. The outlines that Dr. Jeremiah uses are well worth the price of this book. Each chapter examines various aspects of prayer from the basics of prayer to spiritual warfare to praying in the Spirit. The book covers nearly every aspect of prayer and as you would expect from a skilled teacher such as Dr. Jeremiah, he stays true to his text.

I higly recommend this book on prayer. It will add to your prayer life and give you a rich understanding of what the Bible says about prayer.

5 out of 5 stars If You Ask Anything in My Name (John 14:14).......2004-08-24

Dr. Jeremiah's teaching from the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6) and Christ's High Priestly prayer (John 17) flow directly out of the conviction and passion of his heart that we "have not because we ask not."

After providing more-than-adequate arguments for the necessity of prayer, he goes on to plainly, powerfully and purposefully set out a "roadmap for prayer" from the Lord's Prayer. Worship, God's Will, Our Needs, Forgiveness and Protection are the basic building blocks he uses to construct a pattern for personal prayer. This is an excellent resource for any Christian--whether your prayer life languishes or flourishes.

One Caution: if you listen to Dr. Jeremiah's weekly radio program and thought to read this book as a supplement to the sermon series of the same name (Prayer, the Great Adventure), you should know that the text of chapters 4-10 (and parts of 1-3) are verbatim the same as the audio messages.

One Exhortation: if you don't listen to Turning Point (or missed the series Prayer, the Great Adventure), READ THIS BOOK! This represents the best of Dr. Jeremiah's teaching and some of the best teaching on the subject of prayer I've run across.

Please do not take the title to be a critism of the material itself. I love Dr. Fox's work. I now own several books as listed below. What has caused me to ding this 'book' is the fact it was promoted as 'rare'. It is not by any means rare.

Having obtained this 'book' (its merely 17 written pages with over 15 blank pages) I found that all three essays are in Chapter 11, 12, and 13 in Dr Fox's other book, Power Through Constructive Thinking. This 'book' is priced @ $12 dollars whereas Power Through Constructive Thinking can be obtained for $11 and contains over 100 pages of more material. After researching further I find that all these 'books' (you can indentify them as having a bright yellow border with white inset contrasting the title) published by Kessinger Publishing are merely reprints of individal essays which are contained books (published by HarperCollins) in Alter your Life, Power Through Constructive Thinking. Find and User your Inner Power, Diagrams for Living, and Stake your Claim.

I highly recommend Sermon on the Mount, Alter your Life, Power Through Constructive Thinking. Find and User your Inner Power, Diagrams for Living, and Stake your Claim.
