Book Description
In this remarkable debut novel set in 1940s Mexico, Marc Bojanowski has crafted a work of startling originality -- a poetic, mesmerizing tale of loyalty, violence, love, and redemption.
Written in the searing voice of its unnamed narrator, this is the story of a young man drifting through the badlands of California and Mexico after the death of his mother. He eventually settles in Canci#243;n, a sleepy Baja city on the verge of transformation. Lured by money and fame, he enters into an underground world where men fight against trained dogs before a raucous crowd of the town's elite businessmen and those who work for them. With an uncommon display of strength, skill, and sheer fearlessness, he becomes an overnight success.
Before long he catches the eye of a powerful businessman, whose grand vision is to turn Canci#243;n into a lucrative resort destination. But when the dog fighter finds friendship with a revolutionary old poet and is drawn toward a mysterious young woman, he becomes ensnared in an intricate web of promise and deceit. Caught between the ways of his past and the dreams of his future, he is forced to make a devastating choice that ignites a mixture of jealousy, greed, lust, and betrayal, culminating in a fight both for his life and the fate of the city.
Haunting, lyrical, imaginative, and immensely powerful, The Dog Fighter is a stunning novel of beauty and brutality that announces the arrival of an extraordinary new talent in American fiction.

Brilliant Debut Novel ..........2007-01-21
A truly impressive first novel from Marc Bojanowski ... lyrical bordering on poetic. Mr. Bojanowski tells a violent tale of a severely damaged young man's journey toward becoming a whole human being. The violence is handled artfully ... never gratuitous ... harsh and ugly, but always a logical part of the meticulously devised plot. A unique and highly original debut novel from Marc Bojanowski.
Wow.......2005-01-24
What an amazing writer this Marc Bojanowski.!!!!
I cannot wait for his next masterpiece.
Thank you for daring to write such a different book in such a GREAT style.
Good story, too much affectation.......2005-01-21
The energy in Marc Bojanowski's writing is exciting. Though the first scene of the book (and countless scenes thereafter) are gruesome--and though this would normally turn me off--I kept reading because of Mr. Bojanowski's strong voice. The initial energy, however, fizzled as I read. What seemed like genuine innovation at the outset became self-conscious affectation midway through. It's not that Bojanowski leaves out punctuation (commas, apostrophes, etc.) that bothers me. It's that he uses a period INSTEAD of a comma. My complaint? If you're going to put a mark of punctuation there, use the right one. IF you're going to innovate and delete common punctuation, then DELETE it. Let the rhythm of your language carry the voice. Exchanging one mark of punctuation for another is artifice, not art. Likewise with his deletion of apostrophes. Apostrophes have nothing to do with voice. They only have to do with clarity. Deleting them comes off as a trick, rather than something necessary to the story.
I can only attribute this self-consciousness to Mr. Bojanowski's youth. However, I am also impressed by the very same thing. To write a novel this strong at this age shows so much promise for the future. It's staggering. (More staggering, say, than any other "Heartbreaking work of Genius" out there.) I can't wait to see what Bojanowski writes next--and I hope some of the self-consciousness of The Dog Fighter wanes and his great sense of language and image and story prevail.
A Writing Style Reminiscent of Hemingway.......2005-01-05
Marc Bojanowski's debut novel is a story that finds power and beauty of life in the masculine brutality of Mexican dog fighting. If there is one word to describe this book, it is passion.
Three major themes intertwine through The Dog Fighter. First is the theme of dog fighting, of the contrived struggle between man and beast that reflects the very soul of the protagonist. Second is the theme of unrequited love, as seen through the protagonist's unquenchable desire for a woman he can never have. The third theme is that of war, of the constant revolution that engulfs the town of Canciòn.
It is during his first fight with a dog that the protagonist lays eyes on his love. This instant awareness of his love distracts him from the fight, minimizing the danger of the dog and emphasizing the danger of his heart. This is because the woman he falls in love with is the mistress of the Cantana, the brutal and corrupt businessman turning Canciòn from a quiet fishing village into a tourist resort for Americans.
It is against these businessmen that the people of Canciòn revolt. These people want their fishing village to remain the way it always has been. They sabotage equipment and delay construction of the hotel which symbolizes the radical changes that this fishing village faces. The protagonist is drawn into this struggle. In the end, he must choose which side of the revolution he will support.
There are no easy paths for the Dog Fighter.
From the first whisperings of the Dog Fighter's grandfather to the final song sung by the Dog Fighter's love, this tale is absolutely engrossing.
True..........2004-12-24
I am surprised after reading the previous reviews...two mentioned Hemingway. I just finished the book and that was my very thought. Although I would temper that by saying it is very Hemingwayesque with overtones of Dostoevsky. By far the most insightful, best written books I read all year. Note...I am a huge Hemingway fan, therefore my bias. As to the lack of punctuation...I barely noticed. I think it only matters if you can't stomach the book's content...not to say that it's terribly graphic. Simply, some folk won't sit well with scenes depicting the dog fights. While this is the title, scenes involving the actual dog fighting actually take up very little of the book. One thing I don't get, and this isn't the author's fault, why is there a white kid on the cover pointing what looks like a toy gun?

Not AM, but good.......2005-05-03
While no one is (or could be) Alan Moore, and he is certainly the definitive Swamp Thing writer, Veitch does a really good job. Moore concentrates on ST as horror, Veitch centers his story on sci-fi aspects.
These issues make up only a small part of Veitch's (almost) 2 year run (with the abrupt ending caused by the infamous Jesus issue cancellation). Altogether, it is rare that a writer can pick up and produce quality stuff after the great master has left.
Veitch isn't Moore, but who is ?.......2005-02-15
Following one of comicdoms high-points can't be easy. One of two things usually happens: the writer moves in a new direction leaving the past continuity completely behind (think Geoff Johns on the Flash after Mark Waid) or the writer tries to keep the book what it was but fails (think Doom Patrol after Grant Morrison left - Rachel Pollock was miserable). But in taking the reins on Swamp Thing after Alan Moore finished up his multi-year run, Rick Veitch does a real interesting job. His first few issues are in this collection. It's definately worth reading and I hope DC keeps 'em coming. But if you haven't already read the six collections that make up Mooore's run on the title...well, you should do that first. Then come read this.
Good start for Veitch BUT..........2005-01-15
Rich Veitch certainly gets off to a good start with this collection. This collection picks up after the reunion of Swamp Thing and Abby, his wife. Veitch begins a compelling storyline in which the Parliament of Trees has accidentally planted the "seed" for the NEW Swamp Thing, thinking Alec Holland had died during his time wandering the universe. Swamp Thing goes head to head against his elders, and a new monster, the "Wild Thing," is introduced. Veitch even works some magic in making Abby a stronger character, and bringing back John Constantine.
The "BUT" in my review comes from the relatively scant amount of material included in this book. While it is not as expensive as the others in the Saga series, it collects only SIX issues. And the final issue feels like a cliffhanger. If DC/Vertigo has no plans to release AT LEAST the rest of Veitch's run, I will be very disappointed. A great deal of new information is presented in this collection, without much payoff by the book's conclusion.

Book Description
In the beginning was God and it was He that created the angels. Like humankind, whom He created later, God gave the angels a self-will and those that chose to rebel against God became known as the "fallen angels" or demons. Earth ReGenesis is a multilevel story of the alien offspring of the fallen angels, the Genesis giants. The sex-craved, hedonistic and lustful giants return to earth a billion years after the "end times". Humankind has since re-evolved and the eternal battle between God and His angels and the Prince of Darkness and his demons continues.

Fun adventures of the animal sort.......2000-06-27
I picked this book up at an outlet (remainderer, is the correct term, I believe) and enjoyed it quite a bit. It's a collection of several short stories which follow a single character through various adventures. The first suffered from a fairly obvious logic flaw (IMO) but was still exciting. I would actually like to see more stories about the same character/universe; I feel they are unfinished, that a few more stories are needed to explain a few things and bring closure to some of the events. Anyway, if you come across a copy, it's worth checking out.
An amazing adventure for readers of all ages........1998-06-22
Julia Ecklar does an excellent job capturing the reader's attention, and keeping it. This book is one that you won't want to put down, whether you're an animal lover or not. The adventure, mystery, and suspence in the stories are interwoven perfectly to make for a fantastic journey that you'll never forget.

Excellent book........1999-08-21
This is the only stickpin book I am aware of, and I don't believe there needs to be another one. Great for stickpin collectors, jewelry enthusiasts, etc. Highly recommended!
Interesting and Informative for the Collector!.......1998-12-28
As a collector of all stickpins, I gained much knowledge from this book. It covers many catagories and types of stickpins and scarfpins from all eras prior to the 1940s. It was also fun to just see the quality pictures of this lady's collection. To a collector or dealer, this book will be well worth the price. I refer to it again and again.

World War I had ended. Plunged into political and economic ruin, the streets of post-war Germany were filled with chaos and violence. Embittered by these circumstances, many people sought relief in the growing number of political groups promising a new and more auspicious future. For many the National Sozialistsche Partei contained the answers they were seeking.
Within these pages are the answers you are seeking. Using color images, contemporoary photogarphs, and period data, N.S.D.A.P. Enamel traces the development of the Party pin from its addling beginnings to its, and the Third Reich's, ultimate demise!
At last, a full color reference book dedicated to the N.S.D.A.P enamel membership badge. N.S.D.A.P. Enamel is a soft cover, 85 page book tracing the Party Pin from its beginnings in the 1920s through the end of the Third Reich. Over 150 closeup images provide the viewer with the opportunity to study the various configurations of enamel, attachment pins, logos, lettering, and manufacturers marks.

Book Description
The story is a lagniappe. It's intended for readers of the Dread Empire's Fall series, and takes place between a couple of the chapters in my forthcoming novel, Conventions of War. For readers of the novel I hope it will enrich their appreciation of a couple of the characters. For new readers, I hope it will be an introduction to the sort of surprises that will be found in the books.

Nice Punch.......2006-03-26
Although I am familiar with some of Walter Jon's work, I am unfamiliar with his DREAD EMPIRE SERIES, which made "The Stickpin" all the better for me. The story drew me right into Walter Jon's world, a good science-fiction mystery with a nice punch at the end. A highly recommended read.
Good Story.......2005-10-25
An enjoyable story, fitting nicely somewhere in the middle of his new book, Conventions of War. Definitely worth the 49 cents.

Rastafari is about more than just smoking pot..........2005-11-01
Synopsis (From the back cover)
During the 1920s, Marcus Garvey's "back to Africa" philosophy affected much of the thinking of the African diaspora of the Western Hemisphere. Nowhere was he more influential than in Jamaica, his island homeland, for here was a greatly exploited people, most of whom were directly descended from slaves. In one of his speeches, Garvey, already revered as a prophet in Jamaica, said: "Look to Africa, when a Black King shall be crowned, for the day of deliverance is near."
1930 witnessed the splendorous coronation of Ras Tafari, an Ethiopian baron, as the Emperor Haile Selassie, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Selassie was a direct descendant of David in a line of Ethiopian kings stretching in unbroken succession from the time of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. This event sent many religious Jamaicans to their Bibles, where they found support for this in Revelations, Ezekiel, Isaiah, and other books. Before long, religious leaders on the island were saying that Garvey's prophecy had been fulfilled and preached to the people to consider Haile Selassie the Living God and call themselves "Ras Tafaris" in his honor.
Theses are the rough beginnings of the Rastafarians. In the years since then, they have become a very important subculture in Jamaica. Recognized by their long, entwined "dreadlocks" and beards; their religious use of ganga (marijuana), which they feel has healing spiritual powers; their "mutant" English and their profound influence over Jamaica's internationally admired reggae music; yet little is known of their history, lifestyle and beliefs.
This book takes the reader, in both fascinating text and stunning photography, deep into Jamaica, the birthplace of Rasatafarianism, on a trip through the intricate webbing of these African roots and their outposts in the Western Hemisphere.
jah rastafari.......2000-08-31
Hey, if your looking for a good discriptive book on the Rastafarian religon this is for you! The only thing I dint like about the book was that it was kind of one sideded to the religon. Now I know that religon is a touchy subject for most people but, the other books on rastafari have been more welcoming of all types of people. However I would recomend this book to anyone exploring their inner self!
