Book Description

See what it was really like at the golden age of gay liberation—back to the 70s in San Francisco!

The Harrington Park Press is proud to bring this classic of gay literature to a new generation of readers! Some Dance To Remember: A Memoir-Novel of San Francisco 1970-1982, out of print for over a decade, has been referred to as "the gay Gone with the Wind." But such words do not do justice to this story. Some Dance To Remember uses the quintessential gay love story between a writer and a bodybuilder to capture the tone, setting, style, events, and essence of the Gay Liberation Generation of the 1970s. It is a lyrical romance, a comedy, a tragedy—all this and more—wrapped up in the historical context of the life and times of San Franciscans during the decade that changed the world. You'll never forget this story of life, love, and loss, and the extraordinary San Francisco storyteller who lived it.

This historical epic seethes with sex, love, and passionate characters with unique motivations. Lives are built, lives are destroyed. This sweeping memoir-novel tells the story of the golden mythic time after Stonewall. It was the time of the rise of the Castro and of Folsom Street. It was the time of the assassinations of Harvey Milk and Robert Opel and his Fey Way Gallery. It was the time of the White Night riot. It was the time of the burning of the Barracks South of Market. It was the time when the mysterious "gay cancer" first sent the city of San Francisco into hysteria.

This moving story brims with ideas and meticulous details. Entertaining, sharp-witted, and totally enthralling, this story chronicles an extraordinary time in an extraordinary place that shall never be forgotten.

"San Francisco's where you go to lose a lover."

Ryan O'Hara takes the lead in this wild story of love, sex, fear, and abandon. He is a writer, coming to San Francisco during this golden age to seek a voice not only for himself but also for the burgeoning gay liberation movement galvanizing the country. Enter Kick Sorensen, Ryan's "perfect man," the drop-dead blond bodybuilder who may or may not be all he seems. From bodybuilding to muscle sex to the bathhouses to gay porn to the hustlers, the story unfolds. Their romance leads them to careen movie-like in and out of the lives of very unique and very human people—gay and straight—and thus show this golden decade for the important time it was—and has remained.

An excerpt:

Men, accustomed to meeting at bars and baths, gathered at the massive bronze door in small groups unsure exactly what to do. Death was new to them. This was the first grand gay funeral. "At least he doesn't have to grow old," they whispered. The majority of the mourners wore full leather gear. They were Folsom Street men, good-looking and gruff, a decade or two older than the boys on Castro. Leather for them was an attractive saving grace. Leather transformed aging bodies. Leather was tighter and smoother than skin. Leather cinched and corseted and disguised bodies which rarely, if ever, darkened the iron-pumping, designer-muscle gyms on Castro. Leather was a fetish that extended a mature man's sex appeal for another dozen years.

"Can you believe it?" Ryan whispered to me during the service. "We're witnessing a whole new gay phenomenon." He pointed to a row of bearded men in full black leather wiping the dark circles under their eyes with red bandanas. Their grief was real. Ryan was not so cynical as to be blind to that. Death was bad enough, but premature Death at the hands of a murderer was almost more than he could bear.

5 out of 5 stars Memoir, Manifesto, Mythology....and Classic.......2006-04-09

"The hardest thing to be in America today is a man."

I recall seeing the movie "The Boys In The Band" in college and being so put out by the loathsome men depicted in it that I was easily confined to the closet for another five years. Back in my high-school seventies, when the bulk of the activity in this book took place, I was just a kid with a confused identity. Even in college, I read about Moscone/Milk with a mix of confusion and anger, wondering why good men could get gunned down for little more than being who they were, while all the time I was denying to myself who I really was. It took me another decade or so to come to grips with it all, and to discover what one of the basic premises of "Some Dance To Remember" sets forth. It makes me wish I'd come across this book in the seventies and not viewed "The Boys In The Band."

From "Some Dance To Remember;" "Every gay man is a homosexual, but not every homosexual is gay."

Jack Fritscher has created a world in "Some Dance To Remember" that goes from romanticized to mythologized to the aftermath of when paradise crumbled under the corrosional erosion of AIDS, drugs and too many Peter Pans. Ryan O'Hara is the hero of the story. He publishes MANUEVERS magazine in pursuit of the romanticized masculine man, engaging in rough and tumble leathersex and disdaining the hordes of men who come to San Francisco only to give up any male traits and begin acting like Junior Judy Garlands. He publishes a book titled "The Masculinist Manifesto" and sets the feminests and the SF Queenly majority into a convulsions. (Any similarity to MANUEVERS and Mr. Fritscher's residency at the legendary DRUMMER magazine are purely coincidental.) A cast a characters surrounds Ryan and form his support net; his sister who is a high profile cabaret star, his best friend and porn-king Solly Blue and his hustler's paradise, pop culture critic Magnus Bishop, and finally his ideal man, the southern-bred Kick Sorenson.

Throughout the novel, real life men and women drop by, such luminaries as Moscone and Milk, Dianne Feinstein, Tony Travorossi and Armistead Maupin all get name checked during the decade that "Some Dance To Remember" winds through. But where this book really shines is in its portrayal of the whole San Francisco gay liberation scene of the seventies. The first two acts of the book made me long for a time machine, for the chance to enter a golden age of freedom and possibility, before AIDS, before Iran-Contra, before Bush and Dobson and Falwell and Phelps. The descriptions of both the fictional and the true legendary places sinks in deeply, and even the side characters are all exquisitely detailed. "Some Dance To Remember" is almost a mirror reflection of Maupin's "Tales Of The City" (before the endless sequel books splattered into absurdity), with the characters more exclusively masculine and a lot tougher. Both books capture the very essence of the heady times of San Francisco's madcap dance through the get up and boogie years.

Alas, and much like the cautionary ending song/tale the album from which "Some Dance To Remember" takes its name, O'Hara discovers "to call someplace paradise is to kiss it good-bye." His friend Solly Blue has told him repeatedly how all hustlers are the same, just with different packaging, and as Ryan discovers the world he tried to design is undoing, the story reaches its conclusion in the fog of AIDS, steroids, and the real world that invaded The Castro as the Age Of Reagan ascended.

Probably more identifiable for me than those endless tales of coming out and the subversion of masculinity that most gay books churn away; "Some Dance To Remember" relishes its maleness and shys not from looking into the darker areas of the male psyche. Rich in depth and lovingly detailed, spellbinding in its vocabulary (Jack Fritscher is a master of catchy phrases), "Some Dance To Remember" deserves a place on the pantheon of great American gay novels.

5 out of 5 stars 1st book on gay steroid use, San Francisco, b4 BALCO & Bonds.......2004-06-27

Queer culture is always the leading edge. Long before today's professional athlete "doping scandal" with headlines about BALCO and Barry Bonds, gay men as far back as 1977 were using oral and injectible steroids according to this book which is, as far as I could find, the first book to deal with steroids and gay men.
In my medical web research about clinical steroids, I came across this book that frankly reveals how steroids in the 1970s were the most abused drug out of all the drugs used by gay men as party favors. In fact, the main character in this tale about the "size of masculinity" shoots so many steroids he becomes a gay Frankenstein monster whose normal soul cannot fill up his abnormally huge body. It's very interesting.
If lessons are ever learned by anybody, anyone thinking about taking steroids should take this book as a serious cautionary tale of what steroids do to a person and a personality. Real violence arises to abuse queer love.

5 out of 5 stars Take a tour of 18th & Castro, Folsom south of Market.......2004-02-07

I provide gay tours of San Francisco and I came across this novel which was written before I moved to the City. This memoir is chock full of gay history details when Castro was in bloom with Harvey Milk and the Cockettes and clones and leather in the 1970s. I think that tourists to San Francisco, especially gay tourists coming to Mecca, might better enjoy their visits to 18th and Castro and to Folsom Street with a copy of this memoir in their backpack. This is an emotional, historical guide to SOMA and 18th and Castro back in the day. Back in the day when the 1970s was the golden age. The writing is very good. The characters seem real. Even Dianne Feinstein is in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Gay Studies, Gay history, gay entertainment.......2003-08-28

The movies "Boogie Nights" and "Wonderland" led me to search engines that turned up this book that does not flinch in revealing the real life of gay sex aborigines in the experimental decade of the 1970s which was not the bad trip some people make it out to be. I brought in a copy to my gay studies professor who said the book was too long to be assigned at 562 pages. So I said, What about Russian lit? She said, if you have the time, read it, write your paper, and convince me it's worthy gay literature. I got an A.

DAW is proud to present Sorcery Rising-a book which we believe will prove to be one of the most exciting fantasy debuts of our time.

Its author, Jude Fisher, is a major U.K. publisher who oversees the British publication of all of J.R.R. Tolkien's work-which led to her writing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings Visual Companion.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-08-18

The book arrived quickly & i really enjoyed reading it, can't wait for the next installment

4 out of 5 stars First of three engrossing reads.......2006-10-23

I am a Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan, and I really enjoyed reading this trilogy. There are a lot of characters to follow in the trilogy, which can be difficult to follow at times, especially in this first book. I think this is a worth-while read, though, because the story is interesting and the author ties everything together well. There are many instances of violence with graphic, sometimes gory detail throughout the book. If that type of thing bothers you, then I wouldn't read the book.
Overall, this book was hard to put down, and I went straight out and bought the other 2 books of the trilogy to read.

4 out of 5 stars A great book-really keeps you reading.......2006-05-07

I have to say I'm surprised by all the so-so and bad reviews this book is getting. I don't feel like I read the same book as the other reviewers at all. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the next book. The multitude of characters added depth and interest to the story. The slow unfolding of the mysteries of the magic and the Rosa Eldi(still not explained completely at the end of book one) drew me on into the story and left me wanting more. It wasn't perfect in every way, as no book ever is, but all in all I thought it was a great introduction to a complex new fantasy world.

3 out of 5 stars Annoying, but catchy enough I read the whole thing.......2005-11-05

I'm going to echo a lot of what other people have said.

The author mimics existing or ancient cultures here in the real world, with just minimal changes so she's not actually using real gods names, and culture combinations like Arabs meet the French. (Sur instead of Thor, Fallah instead of Allah ... admittedly Fallah's female, but still, it's a religion that dresses women in head to toe covers like burqas. :P) It gets annoying after a while.

The characters are very flat. They've got one or two driving forces apiece. Most of the men and women follow preset templates - misogynyst and shallow, respectively.

The author kept bringing up "throbbing manhood" and similar phrases, which was one reason I picked up the book in the first place. I thought there might be interesting scenes in it. ;-) But, sadly, it basically never goes past that, at least not where we can see it. So, lots of men getting blue balled and thinking about sex and having sex off screen, but nothing I'd call riveting.

All that said I still read the darn thing and am going to go find a copy of 2 and 3 at the library (sorry Amazon, there's no way you'll get me to buy them). I like the magic elements. And the book ends on multiple cliffhangers, so I feel compelled to find out what happens next.

3 out of 5 stars Neither very bad, nor very good. .......2005-06-01

I had high hopes for Sorcery Rising when I saw that it came with a recommendation from Robin Hobb. One of the things that I like so much about Hobb as a writer is that she works within epic fantasy tropes to create something really unique. Unfortunately, Fisher is pretty heavy on the stock fantasy elements and fairly light on the unique. This said, she is clearly a good craftsman and the writing flows smoothly all the same.

The main "real" story seems to be centered in the competing God myths that the different cultures have-- Falla and Sur. There is something in it about magic coming back to the world and the consequences of getting what you pray for that has the potential to be really interesting. I wish that the book had focused itself a little bit more here and a little bit less on the competing romantic and sexual issues of the various characters.

Katla is one of a long tradition of strong tomboy fantasy characters and she does not disappoint as being part of that tradition. Her relationship with her brothers adds a new and interesting complexity to the character type as does her weapon-making ability. I would have preferred it if Fisher had taken a page from Modesitt and focused on Katla's love of the craft. It would have made the subsequent actions of her father that much more compelling.

I was not bothered by Fisher mining the Viking tradition. She does it well, and it is nice to see nordic races treated as more than blond barbarian counterparts to complicated English/Irish/French-based nobility types. However, I was annoyed to have the typical gypsies and the now nearly-standard middle eastern characters in the book. They did feel like retreads in a way that the Eryans did not.

In short, it was a decent use of a few hours and I liked it enough that I will probably pick up the next book in the series. The book should appeal to fans of swords & sorcery fantasy epics. It has a number of sexual plot elements and is not suitable for younger readers.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Most Compelling Trilogy.......2007-03-28

Fool's Gold is not the most compellling trilogy I've ever read. But I did like the first book enough to buy the others. There are three major groups of people -- Scandinavian-like, Mid-east-like and Gypsy-like, who interact, fight and are mistreated. There is an awful lot of violence, as wars are fought for foolish reasons and unlikely quests are made from greed. The characters are varied and some are quite likeable. There are a couple of real meanies who seem to be completely evil. Sexual language and situations are rampant, but more amusing than anything else. The southern cities seem to be much the same in description. There is a lot of killing, but the resurrection rate is high.

      5 out of 5 stars Woah!!.......2006-07-04

This book sums up the trilogy perfectly. Captivating from the beginning to the end, I have to blame this book for 2 - 3 late projects, but at the same time thank it for one of the most captivating reads i have had yet. The story was well paced and delivered with immaculate style. The constant swapping between caricatures was a stroke of genius, I was never left waiting and wondering what was happening with the many other caricatures.
11/10, one of the best reads i have had for a long time

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-07-01

I have never posted a review before, but then I'd never written to an author before to say how much I loved a book either - until I read the final part of the Fool's Gold trilogy, Rose of the World. I might still not have written a review had I not noticed the number of negative postings while I was searching for more by Jude Fisher - okay, we all have different tastes, but I was still amazed; after all, Jude Fisher had just joined my list of favourite authors, alongside Tad Williams, George RR Martin, Tolkien and Robert Jordan!

I'm not a literary critic and I struggle to explain why I was so enthralled by this story. I love remote Scottish islands and Norwegian fiords and perhaps I felt an empathy with the people and landscapes of Katla Arensen's world. But a novel needs characters who make that world come to life - and that's what happens here. I liked having characters who made mistakes; who sometimes survived more through luck than judgment, but who are infinitely more real than the chisel-jawed Robert Langdons of popular literature. Surely having less-than-perfect characters only adds to the unpredictability of the story? I suppose I'm saying that Jude Fisher's characters (both human and divine) have depth and, therefore, believability.

I also found it a refreshing change for an author to treat me like a grown-up. This is not a trilogy for children; if it was, the often graphic sexual references and the horrors of death and sadism would have been toned down into euphemism and goodies killing baddies who deserved to get their comeuppance!

So please, do not be put off by some of the other reviews. If you enjoy fantasy by the authors I've mentioned, and especially if you like Mary Gentle's `Ash' and `1610', then I'm certain you'll love this. Rose of the World is a brilliant book which concludes a brilliant trilogy. I, for one, want to read more about the adventures of Saro, Tam and Katla. A definite 5 stars!

      5 out of 5 stars A brilliant series.......2006-06-27

I never post reviews normally, but I was so flabbergasted by the negative reviews posted for this excellent book, the end to what I think is one of the finest epic series I've ever read, that I couldn't just sit back and do nothing. I've passed The Fool's Gold trilogy on to my mom, my aunt, my cousins and lots of friends and they've all loved it, so I really don't understand where all this negativity is coming from. I like the way the story goes from character to character - it gives a sense of how huge this fantasy world is, and the balance Jude Fisher strikes between the cosmic and magical and the real human stories is quite breathtaking. There are flaws, sure: but there's no such thing as a perfect book, right? And I think the flaws (the end is just a bit too neatly done for my liking - I think maybe it should have been 4 books, not 3) suggest that when this interesting writer produces another book, she will be even better. If you like George RR Martin's Ice and Fire books, or Robin Hobb's Assassin series, you'll love this trilogy, I promise you. Don't take any notice of the reviews: get hold of a copy and make your own mind up. For me 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars It's not all bad, but it does have issues.......2006-04-16

Three ? stars. This is a very large and awkward book, but I'm not sure that it deserves the flack that the other readers are delivering. Admittedly, there are flaws. However, it wasn't that bad. I just skipped most of the stuff about Aran Aranson, like I did in the last book (Not Interested in the greedy idiot!). I do think that Jude Fisher either tried to tie things up to neatly within the trilogy or just tried to fit to many characters into a trilogy. The flaw might be a combination of both of these comments. I didn't find it that confusing of difficult, just to reliant upon convenience (oh, we just tripped over a god, lets go finish this?!?) to bring the characters together for the "final showdown." The conclusion is a far cry from my hopes when the series started. If you liked Sorcery Rising, please try Jennifer Fallon's Second Son's Trilogy or Transformation, Revelation, and Restoration by Carol Berg (avoid most of the D'Arnath stuff).

Few people can write about faith, parenting, and relationships as can the talented, irreverent Anne Lamott. With characteristic black humor, ("Everyone has been having a hard time with life this year; not with all of it, just the waking hours") she updates us on the ongoing mayhem of her life since Traveling Mercies, and continues to unfold her spiritual journey.

Plan B finds Lamott wrestling with mid-life hormones and weight gain while parenting Sam, now a teenager with his own set of raging hormones. Her observations cover everything from starting a Sunday school to grief over the death of her beloved dog, Sadie; lamenting the war to bitterness over her relationship with her now-departed mother.

As she tugs and pokes out the knots in a slender gold chain necklace, it becomes a metaphor for letting go and learning to forgive. "…any willingness to let go inevitably comes from pain; and the desire to change changes you, and jiggles the spirit, gets to it somehow, to the deepest, hardest, most ruined parts." It's her willingness to show us the knotted-up, "ruined parts" of her life that make this collection of sometimes uneven essays so compelling.

"Everything feels crazy," writes Lamott, adding, "But on small patches of earth all over, I can see just as much messy mercy and grace as ever…." Lamott's essays will serve as reminders to readers of the patches of messy mercy and grace in a chaotic world.--Cindy Crosby

With the trademark wisdom, humor, and honesty that made Anne Lamott's book on faith, Traveling Mercies, a runaway bestseller, Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith is a spiritual antidote to anxiety and despair in increasingly fraught times. The world is a more dangerous place than it was when Lamott's Traveling Mercies was published five years ago. Terrorism and war have become the new normal; environmental devastation looms even closer. And there are personal demands on Lamott's faith as well: turning fifty; her mother's Alzheimer's; her son's adolescence; and the passing of friends and time. Fortunately for those of us who are anxious and scared about the state of the world, whose parents are also aging and dying, whose children are growing harder to recognize as they become teenagers, Plan B offers hope in the midst of despair. It shares with us Lamott's ability to comfort, and to make us laugh despite the grim realities. Anne Lamott is one of our most beloved writers, and Plan B is a book more necessary now than ever. It will prove to be further evidence that, as The Christian Science Monitor has written, ""Everybody loves Anne Lamott.""

3 out of 5 stars I love (LOVE) Annie but..........2007-10-10

I adore this woman for her faith, her wit and her unbelievable ability to keep on "keepin on" but the politics in this book just about drove me over the edge. I know, I know... to love Annie is to expect her political rantings. I kept reading and I did gleam little nuggets here or there of the Annie I know & love. It was worth the read, if only I could fast forward some of the politic heavy chapters.

4 out of 5 stars Anne is back.......2007-09-15

Anne Lamott is back in all of her glorious humor, angst, and wisdom. If you haven't discovered Anne yet, she is shock therapy for those of us who learned how to be religious before we learned how to be human.

In Traveling Mercies, Anne shared her crooked journey through alcoholism, bulimia, and broken relationships to a connection with St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and Jesus. Now, in Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith, Anne shares the new challenges to her faith: The Bush Administration, her aging mother, menopause, the losing friends to illness, teaching Sunday School, and raising her teen-aged son, Sam. While many of her crises in Plan B are stock milestones of middle age they are no less poignant when rendered by Anne's pen.

Anne's power comes from her unflinching authenticity, a scarce quality in the self-serving industry of memoir writing. Anne describes her life has it happens, without bothering to airbrush away her neurotic impulses and imperfections. Her self-depreciating humor and honesty creates a picture of spirituality reminiscent of Dostoevsky; we are all simultaneously noble and depraved. As I read Plan B, I laughed with Anne at her foibles and became more honest about my own.

Anne Lamott, along with Fredrick Buechner, might be the best living Christian Author that you can't find at a Christian book store. Anne elevates cursing to a literary art form. More significantly, Anne is openly pro-choice and pro-gay rights. She addresses God as a feminine being. Some readers might balk at her left-wing politics. However, I'd challenge any reader to see Anne as more than the sum of her politics and ideas. Reading anything by Anne Lamott creates the opportunity to remember that God wills and works through your bad attitudes, flawed character, and humanity. Wading through Anne's positions is worth any personal risk you might feel. Encountering her writing style is a joyous experience and you'll bump into God's grace as often as you will step in piles of human frailty.

          Anne is back and triumphant.

1 out of 5 stars Could not get past the venom.......2007-08-10

Traveling Mercies ranks as one of my favorites. Though my political viewpoint is quite different from the authors, her insights that illustrate how you could work around your own bias and experience the holy in your own human failings was totally up my alley.

I was sorely disappointed by the venom that whacks you upside the head shortly after opening the book. I guess loving your neighbor as yourself only applies to those folks whose politics are not too far off from your own.

I had to get it returned before it tainted my love of her other books. If it were not for those other writings I would have rated this book NO stars! I pray that her next offering will be more about faith than hate.

5 out of 5 stars Anne Lamott is tops!.......2007-08-03

Refreshing, honest, and a lyric writer, Anne Lamott is a wonderful discovery. These three books, "Traveling Mercies," "Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith", and "Grace (Eventually) Thoughts On Faith" are the best books I've read all year! I don't think it matters if you are Christian or not, because her books are about her journey from alcoholism and drug addiction, to a discovery of a God of unconditional Love that speaks to everyone.

          Wonderful, exhilarating stories and writing!

5 out of 5 stars Like it was written in my soul..........2007-07-19

          Lamott does it again!

Deeply spiritual, deeply honest, and incredibly funny, Anne Lamott once again presents a collection of 'thoughts on faith' that is so much more. What Lamott calls thoughts are really heart-deep reflections and ponderings from everything from the mundane to the most sacred, from the stuff of parenting and pet-rearing and travel, to the realms of politics, church life, spiritual disciplines, and the ongoing journey into maturity. Whether she's learning to love her mother, her president, or her own thighs, Lamott never takes herself too seriously, and never lets her audience escape from the honesty of her lens. Whether this book challenges you or resonates in your spirit, it is not one that can be easily dismissed.
