5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking features in Showing Our Colors.......2005-10-04

The publication of Showing Our Colors: Afro-German Women Speak Out was groundbreaking not only because it examined the Afro-German experience, one that had been highly ignored or denied, but also because it provided a forum for Afro-German women to discuss issues that affected them. This was difficult before the publication of this book because of the way that German historians had examined what they called "the problem" of the "occupation babies," and because Afro-Germans had generally been raised isolated from other Afro-Germans. This book discusses the concept of German identity and why Afro-Germans have been a marginalized group because of the concept of Germany as a homogenous white nation.

This book confronts the ignorance concerning Afro-Germans in Germany and exposes the reader to instance after instance of subtle racism including and ways in which different expressions concerning race, color, and mixedness are used derogatorily and what connotations they have. It explains why racism is often an accepted part of the social structure and exposes the fallacies that are used to justify ignorance and violent behavior. The personal experiences give an intimate perspective to a history that can otherwise be viewed objectively. By attempting to educate the public with this book, the contributors create a context for themselves in German history and modern German culture. The existence of Afro-Germans is no longer a mystery, nor denied; instead it is claimed by them.

When a society is ignorant of its own history it can not begin to remedy the problems within. Because it provides a community for people formerly isolated, because it examines a history not previously discussed, because it educates a public in the hopes that some change will come about: for those reasons is Showing Our Colors a groundbreaking book.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2002-10-11

This novel will take your breath away. It is horrendous that not enough information has been written about others that sufferd through the scourge of Nazism. And there's scant amount written about Blacks in Nazi Germany. The Rhineland Bastards (children of mixed race in pre-war Germany) were the first victims of the Nazi murder machine. But little is known or has been written about them. Their skin color placed them in a most precarious position: impossible to hide and no amount of bleaching the hair would change that. But Mr. Masaquoi's book is enthralling and exquisitely rendered. One particular passage made me cringe with excitement: being a child and wanting to be like his peers, this young boy of mixed race wanted to join the Nazi Youth like his other friends were doing, knowing little of the atrocious policies of the Third Reich. Well, his mother, fearing she couldn't just tell him NO decided that a better lesson would be to take him to the local Nazi Youth headquarters and attempt to sign him up for the organization....well, you'll have to buy this book to find out what happened. In all, this is a tremendous work and one that has not received, unfortunately, as much attention as many other books on personal accounts of the Holocaust.

Book Description

Tiffany works in Peeps Castle, keeping her coked-up boyfriend in drugs, her crazy mother off the streets, and her vulnerable friends together as best she can in this unblinkingly powerful debut by Timothy Reed. From the depths of abuse and neglect to the ironic stability of her lucrative job performing in a glassed-in booth on 42nd Street, Tiffany, still haunted by the voices of her “swine chorus,” is at the center of Showing Out, the story of a young woman and several of her co-workers. From her close friend, the birdlike Melanie who’s been in the flesh trade since she was thirteen years old, to the obnoxious transvestite Meeca, Showing Out paints indelible portraits of a handful of courageous fellow performers as they try to deal with their own love lives, drugs, AIDS, and the work. Punctuated by Tiffany’s memories of a childhood that included sexual abuse, an alcoholic mother, and an absent father, Showing Out tracks Tiffany’s struggle to move beyond her current life at the old Times Square—and Peeps Castle with it—juggernauts to its own end. Written by the daughter of renowned novelist Ishmael Reed, Showing Out is raw, real, and by turns hilarious and harrowing.

5 out of 5 stars Timothy Reed An Astonishing New Voice.......2007-05-08

Make no mistake, neophyte novelist Timothy Reed can write. Her command of language and plot is enthralling in this breakneck paced tale of a young woman, recovering from a long bout with alcohol and drugs, working in a peep show in Times Square and supporting an abusive boyfriend. The story has an undeniable ring of truth, and Reed keeps you rushing from chapter to chapter to find out what will happen next in the lives of her indefatigable heroine, Tiffany, and her friends, family and co-workers as she emerges from years of abuse and wrong thinking and learns to show out in more ways than one. The peep show milieu is fascinating and presented without judgment, quite a feat, and my jaw dropped at the end of the final chapter. Timothy Reed is an astonishing new voice and I cannot wait to read what she has in store for us next.

5 out of 5 stars good read.......2006-11-11

i enjoyed reading this book because its unlike many books that are out now. The story is a bout a young girl living in New York City who's in an unhealthy realtionship and works nights as a stripper. Through her at times deeply painful lifestyle, there is a gentle melancholy beauty to the way she tell hers story and lives of the people around her. A fascinating read.

5 out of 5 stars The Fast Life.......2004-01-27

Tiffany lives life in the fast lane..She's got more $ than she knows what to do with.. A beautiful lady suffering with schizophrenia, troubled by horrible visions and voices of a woman who abused her as a child. The abuse doesn't stop there...Tiffany goes thru the daily motions, makin that money at Peeps, just to keep her drug addicted, abusive man off the streets..No matter that he is no good for her, at least she doesn't have to hear the "voices" in her head as long as he's around.Tiffany's mom isn't much better, she's an alcoholic and always has her hand deep in Tiffany's pocket. Tiffany's friend Melanie, who also works at Peeps, has HIV and a myriad of problems of her own..Throw in a few fellow dancers, who at times will show themselves to be both friend and foe,one whom is a transvestite who shares a shocking secret with Tiffany, and you've got the makings of a hell of a ride!

Showing out never stops moving..It's a page turner to say the least..Timothy Reed did an outstanding job in her debut..Keep an eye on her.Diagnosed as a schizophrenic herself in 1988, this lady is ontop of her game..She's definately got a story to tell....

I couldn't put this book down, I read it in two days (a girl has got to sleep you know)..The descriptions of the characters weren't over the top..She gave you just the right mix of words to get you to picture everything as it was, in your head..It wasn't overly vulgar like some books can be..But it still got it's point across..Just don't let your 13 year old read it..

It was funny at times, sad at times, tragic at times, but it was true to life.If anyone has ever wondered what life is like on the schizo side of things, this book will give you a peek....

I don't know about you, but I'd like to see a sequel to this!

4 out of 5 stars Brief overveiw.......2005-09-17

It is an interesting veiw on Mage the Acension. It lacks a few detials on system but is other invaulble in an eastern themed game. It is also even if you are not as interested in the eastern subsets. They have some interesting rotes and wonders. They also have a few interesing sub-traditions.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-10-16

Personally, I think this was a big mistake on WW's part. While I like the Akashic Brotherhood and many other things, to make such a big difference between (for example) the Western Technocracy and the Asian Zaibatsu is unnecessary. A great story could have been told with the Asian Technocracy trying to gain a foothold in the established land of tradition that is China and Japan, but instead that was all thrown away in light of "Everything in Asia is cooler." For the other games, it made sense, but for this one, it was baffling.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Something worthwhile on the East.......2001-02-22

I was expecting to enjoy Dragons of the East as soon as I picked it up; in my opinion, the only thing the Mage line had done with the far east, to that point, was lousy (The Akashic Brotherhood Tradition book). Anyhow! I was thrilled with this book! I wanted in-depth material on cultures, magickal styles, and factions, and it DELIVERS. The far east now consists of more than a couple of Shaolin temples. THANK YOU!

4 out of 5 stars A very interesting book, but not excellent........2000-10-05

I bought this book thinking that it would be great, I have the book "Kindred of the East" and I love it, my friends and I really love this game and when I saw the title of this book I thoght "Great, Mage in the East, not only the Akashic Brotherhood exists in this game, so I bought it. I have to say that it is really interesting, but some parts are really boring and it could be a bit more complete.

Book Description

Aglirta is known as the Kingless Land. Once a prosperous and peaceful river valley, it has fallen into lawlessness, and its feuding baronies are engaged in a constant state of war. But the land is kingless no more, for the Sleeping King of legend, King Kelgrael, has been reawakened by the efforts of the valiant Band of Four: Hawkril, a bold and brave warrior gifted with great strength and fortitude Craer, the crafty and clever thief Sarasper, the learned and wise healer and last but not least Lady Embra Silvertree, the mystical Lady of Jewels, a powerful sorceressYet peace has not returned. In The Kingless Land, high magic and wizard kings stood in the way, while in The Vacant Throne, civil wars and backstabbing barons resisted the restoration of order. Now, a powerful warlord comes to the front to take control through military might, while the diabolic minions of the Serpent move into position for a climactic battle that will scar the Band of Four forever.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Adventure!.......2004-05-09

Overall, I give this book four out of five stars. A Dragon's Ascension is a great fantasy that will keep you reading until the very end. However, if you are the type of person who doesn't like action and battles, then this book is not for you. There is more fighting in this book than there are events that lead towards a resolution of a plot. One more important fact that needs to be addressed is that this book belongs to a series called "The Band of Four Novels." Like all series, each book relies on information or events that occur in the previous book. I strongly suggest reading the series in order to get the full grasp of the characters and the understanding of the epic journey of the Band of Four.
As you may have guessed the book begins with a group called the Band Of Four roaming the forests of Aglirta. They consist of Embra the sorceress, Hawkril the warrior, Craer the thief, and Sarasper the healer. They are the watchers of the land each contributing their own unique skills for one main purpose, which is keeping the kingdom of Aglirta together.
In this book of the series, the kingdom does not have a king and the significance of the empty throne creates rivalry amongst the barons and warlords to posses the power that can be found in the throne's magic. Possessing the power means a chance rule Aglirta. The Band of Four has been destined to keep order and keep the throne safe from unwanted rulers.
Embra the sorceress is the smartest and most cunning of the Band of Four. She has the ability to use magic against foes and gives the Band of Four an incredible advantage in their battles. In one battle when archers surprised them, she slows down time and gives the rest of the band time to retaliate in a timelier manner. Hawkril the warrior is my favorite character. He lives up to the profile of a warrior. He is noble, he excels in sword fighting, and he never gives up no matter how bleak the situation. Craer the thief is the comic relief of the four. He is full one liners during battles that are memorable. He collects and uses knives skillfully from a far range. Last is Sarasper the healer. He is a healer because he uses magic to fix wounds and cure ailments. He is also a unique warrior who transforms his body shape into a giant wolf spider and only then engages himself into the battles.
As with any epic adventure series, there are the memorable evil characters that disrupt the order of world. The Dragon's Ascension has many really unforgettable antagonists. Starting with Jhavarr Bowdragon, a vengeful wizard who kills first before asking questions, to the hungry land baron Bloodbane who successfully manages to convince others to follow him. Add in serpents, warriors, sorcerers and a lot of deception and you will be entertained with the battles and adventures that are nonstop in this book.
One more thing...this book has nothing to do with dragons.

1 out of 5 stars Dragon!! What dragon?!?.......2003-08-26

I just got done reading this book. The only reason I got this far is because of Ed Greenwoods previous books being fairly well written. I will never do that again. This on just follows the same lines as all the rest. It started out with promise but the further you get in the series the more it seems to insult your intelligence. The main characters mainly go through every one just fighting an endless host of people with swords and magic. Through pure luck they continually win and if they get beat someone comes along and saves them at the last minute.

There is really no plot development and it gets way too mind numbing. I made the mistake of reading the next two out of boredom and kept hoping that something would happen. IT NEVER DID!!! Even if you love Ed Greenwood please avoid this series. I made the mistake of giving him three books to make it better and it never went anywhere. And one last thing to note. It's called A Dragon's Ascension. The only dragon even in there is there for one or two chapters and then promptly dies. How can you title the book from just that tenth of the entire thing?

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Band of 4.......2002-04-17

The king of Aglirta has returned to his century-old slumber, but the country is torn by civil war. Magicians, barons, and mercenaries vie for the thrown in complete disregard for their vows to the true king, his regent, Baron Blackgult, or for the four over-Dukes he had set to retain the peace. With the continuing efforts of the snake priests and a few mad mages thrown into the stew, things look rough indeed for the Band of Four and for the future of Aglirta.

All of Author Ed Greenwood's Band of Four novels are filled with nonstop action and A DRAGON'S ASCENSION is no exception. When Embra loses her magical stone, even Hawkril's massive sword and Craer's quick daggers seem like weak hope for the future of the nation. And unfortunately for the kingdom, the many plotters seem unwilling to kill each other off. Instead, the Four and the Regent must face each in turn, with fewer and fewer resources at every turn.

Greenwood seems to have turned up the emotional complexity of his writing a notch, allowing the reader to feel more involved in the story and less like he is watching someone else's fantasy roll-playing game. The story stakes are also higher. The emergence of the Serpent represents a disaster for the entire world.

A DRAGON'S ASCENSION is fast and compelling reading with murder and battle on almost every page. It may not be a literary masterpiece but it's a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars The Band of Four are back!.......2002-03-13

Through all of his books and in all of his worlds, Ed Greenwood has brought us many fine characters. The Band of Four are no different. His Forgotten Realms work is what made his name in the fantasy genre, but he has certainly not rested on his laurels.

A DRAGON'S ASCENSION is the third book in his Band of Four series. Hawrdil, Craer, Sarasper and Embra (the warrior, the thief, the healer and the sorceress, respectively) have returned to stop the barons of Aglirta from destroying them.

As always, Greenwood's plot is fast-moving and his characters are well-conceived (if a little archetypical). Fans of high energy fantasy will be well served by A DRAGON'S ASCENSION.

5 out of 5 stars Great Martial Arts Game Book!.......2002-06-27

The game was pretty good and we enjoyed it... but the BEST part by far about this book was the information inside! Most games just kind of lay out a system and a few characters. But this one really goes into great depth about the medieval orient and the history of the martial arts. The martial arts info alone makes this a great buy! I HIGHLY recommend it to martial artists and game enthusiasts alike!

Home to a half dozen different sentient races, this singular world is a low-gravity playpen of mammoth spires, endless fractal staircases, gemstone arcs, and dazzling prisms, oil carefully nurtured by the planet's many inhabitants -- until now.

Lieutenant Melora Pozlor, who previously served on Deep Space Nine™, is currently stationed aboard the Starship Enterprise™ where an urgent telepathic summons alerts her to the danger threatening her homeworld.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but padded........2006-03-24

Both of the books are interesting reads, but its clear that they're both padded to make it a two book 'set'. Not cool bilking the readers out of an extra six-fifty.

              5 out of 5 stars STNG #58 Gemworld Book 1 - An interesting tale!.......2003-05-10

One thing is for certain every time you pick up a Star Trek novel written by John Vornholt, he generally comes up with extremely well detailed descriptions for aliens and their worlds as he has done once again here with Gemworld. Capitalizing on the Star Trek Deep Space Nine second season episode of "Melora," John Vornholt has come up with a believable back story for her and her home world. There are two theories about Gemworld, one is that it is artificial and the more believable of the two is that it is an ancient world that has gone through many phases and for a millennia its inhabitants have done everything they can to keep it intact. Here is where John Vornholt's talents shine, besides the odd nature of the planet there are also six indigenous, sentient species on Gemworld, to include the Elaysians in which Melora is a member of. What makes this one even more interesting and unusual is that Lieutenant Reginald Barclay is pretty much in the spotlight. It is sometimes refreshing where the main characters aren't always the lead in a novel.

              The premise:

Lieutenant Melora Pazlar is on board the Enterprise temporarily as a mission specialist and the Enterprise is on its way to Primus IV which is a low gravity planet. As the Enterprise speeds its way towards Primus IV, Melora has a very real dream which she believes to have been induced by the Lipuls which are one of the six sentient species on her home world of Gemworld. After a chance meeting between her and Lieutenant Reginald Barclay and a "Lipul" dream being forced on Counselor Troi, Captain Picard is forced to change course for Gemworld to determine what the crisis may be and hopefully help. What follows is but the first of a two book series where this, the first one is another of John Vornholt's excellent Star Trek tales.

              I highly recommend this and book two of this mini trek series as I'm greatly looking forward to reading the second one myself! {ssintrepid}

              5 out of 5 stars ST-TNG: Gemworld Book #1.......2003-05-01

Star Trek-The Next Generation: Gemworld Book #1 written by John Vornholt is an action-adventure mystery with the main character being none other than Reginald Barclay helping a world experinecing a natural disaster.

Mostly, Lieutenants Reginald Barclay and Elaysian, Melora Pazlar help solve the problem of world destruction. Gemworld is a sparkling world to behold and is one of the wonders within the Federation: an artifical world comprized entirely of crystaline formations. While to atmosphere is held in place by a sophisticate network of force fields because of the low or no gravity within the three-dimestional snowflake, with mammoth spires of crystal, gemstone arcs and dazzling prisms, called Gemworld.

What I liked about this book is the portrayl of the Barclay/Pazlar characters. A real fleshing out is found when reading about the problems facing Gemworld. Six entirely different sentient races inhabit Gemworld making for a dazzling display as the writer explains each with the Alpusta and Frills being some of the most beautifully portrayed within the book.

Barclay is the brilliant/socially inept character that we know and love and is spot on in this story. While the description of Gemworld is vivid and very colorful. This story takes place after Star Trek: Insurrection and that makes Riker/Troi still Imzadi. The descriptions made within this book puts the reader right in the the middle of the story as endless fractal staircases float by as the characters move about in low or no gravity by floating.

Lieutenant Melora Pazlar who was introduced in the series DS-9 is telepathic and while on the Starship Enterprise alerts the crew of the impending danger that exists on her home planet Gemworld. Captain Jean-Luc Picard plans a rescue mission and when the Enterprise and her crew arrive at Gemworld they find the planet in chaos and the Starship is also in danger.

The action-adventure with mystery and intrigue is nicely paced and has its suspenseful moments and you'll have to read both books the get the whole story as Book #1 sets-up Book #2.

All in all, you'll love the very descriptive writing which makes reading them both that much easier.

              4 out of 5 stars Dr. Crasher.......2003-02-05

I have read both, "Gemworld Book #1 and #2", so while I will keep specific comments on the two installments separate, the overall impression comes from having read the entire two part tale. Spelling of the names of a primary character that appears not just in virtually every book, but every movie and virtually all of the television programming is a good indicator of how carelessly these two books were reviewed prior to publishing. Dr. Beverly Crusher becomes Dr. Crasher and then back to Crusher, and then Crasher again in the space of a few pages. The person responsible for verifying the most basic of facts of these books were accurate skipped the spelling portion of their job.

The planet of Gemworld is a unique place, the question of whether it is a naturally occurring organic planet or a construct is discussed throughout this first book, as are the variety of widely varying forms of life that have lived there for billions of years. You would expect that after all this time those that inhabit the planet would have evolved with some commonality yet they remain wildly different species while all being sentient and highly intelligent to varying degrees.

The most interesting part of book one is not the usual planet in distress storyline, but the appearance of Reginald Barclay the famous, hyper-nervous, always a bit of a bumbler that was the focus of many great episodes of the later seasons of The Next Generation. Mr. Barclay this time out not only develops an intense crush on the book's main character and inhabitant of the distressed planet; he also becomes one of the keys to resolving the planet's destruction that even baffles Data. As he has in the past Mr. Barclay finds himself the center of attention, and in this case authority, by being in what he would consider the wrong place at the wrong time.

This first book is the better of the two, and while not a 4 star read it exceeds a 3 star rating.

                  Book Description

To this day Legends of the Jews remains a most remarkable and comprehensive compilation of stories connected to the Hebrew Bible. It is an indispensable reference on that body of literature known as Midrash, the imaginative retelling and elaboration on Bible stories in which mythological tales about demons and magic coexist with moralistic stories about the piety of the patriarchs. Legends is the first book to which one turns to learn about the postbiblical understanding of the biblical episode, or to discover the source for biblical legends that cannot be traced directly to the Bible. It is also the place to find answers to such questions as the date of Abraham's birth; what was Moses physical appearance; and what was the name of Potiphar's wife.
