Riveting mystery.......2007-01-28
I am happy to say that I have found a mystery author that is as good as or better than MHC earlier novels. She Loves Me Not was a riveting read and the ending surprised me. I suspected many different people of being the Secret Admirer but I was wrong. Though I do enjoy putting the pieces together to figure out who-dun-it, I still appreciated the surprise. I have read a couple of Ms. Staub's other mysteries and have found them all to be hard to put down reading. They keep you up late at night trying to finish and prove your theory right (or wrong). Overall a great find!
WOW....Just WOW.......2006-04-12
This review is for all of Wendy Corsi Staub's books. The first book I read by this author was Lullaby and Goodnight, which was maybe a year ago. I loved it so much that I went and bought all of her books and read them all in a month. I just finished her newest one "The Final Victim" and even though it is a long book (474 pages) once I was done with it I was left wanting more. I know she is working on her next novel, but I just wish that she would write faster:) Anyways go, buy and read any of her mystery (except Dearly Beloved). I guarantee you will fall in love with her style and you'll be left wanting more. Just for a reference, I like mystery books where cops and detectives are not involved a lot. My favorite authors are, of course, Wendy Corsi Staub; Mary Higgins Clark, Patricia MacDonald, Carlene Thomson and Sidney Sheldon. Good luck.
ok...........2006-02-20
The plot was good....very orginial. But the tense the story was written in was distracting. It was hard to feel drawn into the story. And the baby talk got very annoying....I figured out on the first page that her son was a small child - having to decipher baby talk through the whole book got old very quickly.
Hardly A Child's Game, Murder and Mayhem........2005-10-08
There was a children's game I remember seemed puzzling, pulling the pedals off a white daisy saying "He loves me, he loves me now." If the pedals are uneven, you have a happy feeling of being loved. If they are even, you feel let down because "he loves me not." No matter how many daises you demean, the result is not always the same. What's puzzling about that quandry? Who is he?! A child is too young to feel romantic or sexual love. Wendy uses this little rhyme to make some sense out of the valentines Rose finds in her mailbox that year.
These are not bought cards, candy in heart-shaped boxes (though a stranger handed me one in Walgreen's one year, one in many he was buying for all the women in his life); the crudely-made "paper hearts with no verse or signature, were not the gift of a 'secret admirer.'" He was a stalker -- watching Rose at her 48 Shorewood Lane address. That Valentine's Day was snowy, and he left footprints outside her windows. I remember one February the snow weas so deep in middle Tennessee (close to Alabama), and the roads icy. It seemed to take forever to walk in a roundabout way in the middle of the pavement to mail Valentine cards to my sons. It took so long to ge to the post office and back home I ended up with a very bad cold. Rose's stalker is a twisted killer with Tourette Syndrome and used violence against the three young women like that monster assassin did to the young professional woman in the movie, 'Red Eye.'
Liza receoved a business proposition: "Dear Ms. Danning: As you may or may not be aware, I am the author of several best-selling spy novels over the past ten years. Since my editor retired last month, I have been searching for a new home for my novels. Would you be interested in meeting me to discuss this possibility? Enclosed is a round-trip train ticket to Westwood, Rhode Island, for the second week of February. You will stay at the Bramble Rose Inn. It is imperative that you keep this metting confidential. Sincerely, David Micahel Yates." Liza wondered, "How on earth did he decide on me of all people?" He is an eccentric recluse whose face is unknown as he will not allow his photo to be on his books. It is rumored that his face is deformed, shot up in Vietnam; or the fact that he may be a woman. She'd read in an article that he was about to depart for Europe to research his newest novel and was seeking a new publisher.
Jennie received a letter also: "Dear Ms. Towne: It is our pleasure to inform you that you have won the grand prize and hereby entitled to an all-expenses-paid weekend in February at the Bramble Rose Inn. Sincerely, Jasper Hammel, Innkeeper." She was to get rount-trip transportation on the Crosswinds Bay ferry. He lures the three women, Rose, Liza, Jennie (posing as Laura) to a magical weekend. This is the culmination of much planning, as he has been watching them for so long now. It is predicted to be a 'stormy' weekend in February.
Wendy Corsi Staub has also written ALL THE WAY HOME, FADE TO BLACK, and DEARLY BELOVED. This is a nice little thriller in the guise of a romance gone bad. Nothing and no one will ever be the same after this Valentine's Day.
You won't be able to put it down!.......2004-10-29
This was a great book. It's the first one I've read by this author, but it won't be the last. I picked it up on a whim because the cover copy made reference to Mary Higgins Clark. I enjoyed this book more than hers. I thought the present tense style would bother me, but it really didn't. I think it made it more suspenseful.

Book Description
Here is a new collection of Lesléa Newman's fiction at its finest. In A Stone's Throw, two butch buddies become more than buddies, though neither of them will admit it. In Mothers of Invention, one woman in a relationship wants a child, but her partner won't learn the true meaning of compromise and commitment. And in Girls Will Be Boys, a straight woman-at least she thinks she's straight-discovers a shocking fact about her "boyfriend." Whether the stories are serious, as in Keeping a Breast when a woman discovers a lump in her breast while making love, or hilarious, as in Flights of Fancy when a femme surprises herself by being attracted to another femme, She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not showcases Newman's talent for portraying the lesbian community in all its glory with compassion, wit, and heart.

wonderful book.......2007-05-18
I couldn't put the book down. The short stories are great. I hated when the book ended.
Exquisite.......2002-06-17
Extremely funny, witty, informed, and highly recommended.
Leslea Newman writes up a storm - not only is she a queen of wit and humour, but she has also given us a look at the some of the more serious issues facing lesbians in today's society.
Newman skilfully infuses each character with their own unique viewpoint in a variety of interesting situations that have the ability to make you laugh and cry, and also stop and think for a moment about what _you_ would do in similar circumstances.
From a chance and sultry liaison on a plane, to falling in love with a stone butch while learning the ropes; from dealing with one's androgynous self to dealing with the loss of a loved one; and from coping with a cancer scare, to coming to realise just how far a butch will go for true love - Newman lets her characters speak with both humour, intelligence, and also a refreshing frankness that both warms and informs one from the very outset.
I always enjoy reading Newman's books, but this time, I really do think she's outdone herself - these are definitely an exquisite collection of stories that you would certainly be very sorry to miss.
-Superb.
Love is alive.......2002-05-21
These short stories are about romance, love, and daily life in the lives of lesbians. From "Keeping a Breast" (about a breast cancer scare) to the gender-bending "Girls Will Be Boys", the stories keep the reader glued to the pages, laughing and crying and getting hot & bothered with the characters. Newman has a wonderful talent for creating masterful stories that warm the readers' hearts. This is a collection not to be missed.
Book Description
Damon's English teacher is so nice.
Really nice. And pretty too.
He'd better not say that to Jessica, though.
She'd accuse him of having a crush.
Like that'd happen.
Customer Reviews:
Our Voices.......2005-05-11
Damon, has a crush on his teacher,Mrs.Searson. He joins up for SVJH Literary Magazine. One of the girls at the meeting said it sounds too snobby,so They picked Our Voices. Lacey has a crush on Richard Griggs, then she and Gel[her boyfriend have a fight and break up] One day,One of Damon's sisters,I think it was Kiai got hurt and fell off the swings, and had to get stiches at Fowler Memorial.
Love Is In the Air.......2005-02-06
Damon has been feeling alone lately. His mom has started dating again, and is really enjoying the company of a man named Ben. Because the two are so close, he is always over...replacing Damon. Most kids would whine about babysitting their two little sisters, but when Ben constantly offers to do things for the two girls, Damon can't help feeling defensive. It's like he's not needed anymore. Then Ms. Serson, Damon's teacher, starts becoming more noticable. She is young, pretty, a good listener, and is relying on Damon to help her with a literary magazine that she is starting. For once, Damon feels like he's needed. But now JESSICA is the one feeling not needed. Every day it seems like Damon is becoming more distant, and Jessica fears that he is getting ready to break up with her.
Meanwhile, Lacey is feeling bored. So Gel has a car, big whoop! There's nothing else interesting about him...but at least he's not Richard Griggs! Richard is a self-absorbed player who seems to be up in her face a lot lately...what a jerk! What a loser! What a...um...cute guy. What an idiot! What a dummy! What a...um...quick-witted...cute guy.
This is a good book! Not the best I've read from this series, but still good. I found Lacey's story especially interesting. I recommend this series to Babysitters' Club, Luna Bay, and Mary-Kate & Ashley book lovers.
Great book.......2004-03-05
Jessica and Damon run into trouble in their relationship when Jessica feels that Damon isnt talking to her about his feelings she hates that his keeping stuff from her and she can't figure out why he'd rather talk to his English Teacher instead of her.
Although Damon dosent want to burden Jessica with his problems coz he thinks that she will think his whigeing than dump him. Damon also gets jealous when Jessica is paired for a project with the most popular boy in school
Lacey breaks up with her highschool boyfriend Gel and she finds herself falling for Richard Griggs. Elizabeth can't figure out why she is jealous either. This was a great book but I think Damons a bit of a worry wart.

The book is such a light mass and easy to carry, also vivid picture on the cover of book adds to the reasons I favor it.
To be honest, at first, I thought the book is again a love story that we usually watch in the film or somewhere else. On the contrary I found it is quite different from other friction stories. The specialty is that the story likes dairy journal, which were written by the characters and in first person. The story sent me a positive impression. It is just the sorts of book I am looking for.
Francine Pascal's writes this book. It focuses on two couples: Domon, Jessica and Lacey, Richard. Let say about the first couple: they are attracted by each other and fall in love. However, Jessica did not felt sweet as she felt Domon kept secret behind her .She was jealous when Demon always staying with Mrs.Serson.In fact, things not like that. Well, Demon is a gay who is not good at expression, along with other reasons causes them nearly to break out. Off course they were getting well consequence .Do want to know more reason, just read the book.
Well, I like the book, especially Demon, I see he made a lot of efforts to change himself and try to share the ideas and thinking with others. Furthermore, he is really a good gay who I found extinct in this real world. He takes care about his sibling and finish homework in the rest time. All in all, the book is worth to read

The best collectionI've seen.......2005-06-05
It's a wonderful collection for a variety of reasons: the beautiful reproduction, the many poses and practices it shows, the many artists and styles, the scholarly but interesting commentary, and attention to a print-lover's details.
The depictions cover the whole range of possible couplings, plus a number of impossible ones. Most of the pictures focus on coupling of one man and one woman, but men together, women singly or together, multiples of each, and even mythical beasts appear in various samples. At least a few pictures show use of toys, genital kisses and caresses, and even cleanup tissues - a little touch that lends familiarity to this unfamiliar culture. Another point appealed to me as well, that all or nearly all scenes show happy, consenting partners.
The historical notes are what such notes should be. They explain the unfamiliar or point out details, without belaboring the obvious. Descriptions of the prints themselves could have been a bit better, especially regarding foxing, fading, and other signs of age. I was glad to see the damaged images, though. It gives viewers a more realistic idea of what to expect when the see prints in galleries or stores, and I'd rather see the image damaged that never see it at all.
In terms of printing and image-making techniques, this book spans a very wide range. The collection is dominated by 17-19th century woodcuts, in the familiar colored style or simple linear images. The authors have also included some of the cartoons that would have been used to guide the artisan cutting the blocks, as well as pencil drawings made for their own sake. There are a few clever fold-outs, including one where, upon lifting the tablecloth on the print, we see lovers playing footsie under the table. Another series (cat. 87) shows a lovely set of prints in a style new to me, one that imitates traditional ink drawings. Others (cat. 84) use "blind impressions" to emboss patterns into the print. Careful photography shows how the indentations enhance the patterns of the fabric, or (in a second print) describe the modeling of the figures and their musculature. In a few cases, the authors show multiple impressions of a given image, to show how instances of the "same" image may differ.
If you have just one book of Edo-era erotica, make it this one. It's beautiful, broad, and informative in many ways. Best of all, it gives a very happy impression of the players and their play.

Book Description
Accompanying the wizard Clothahump to try and mount a defense against the invasion of the monstrous insectoid Plated Folk, Jon-Tom and his otter companion Mudge find themselves faced with ever more serious obstacles-from an underground river that leads to the four waterfalls known as The Earth's Throat, to the spider-silk city of the wary Weavers and their horrifically attractive arachnid queen.
Customer Reviews:
Best of the series.......2005-06-06
This isn't so much the second Spellsinger book as the second half of the first one -- it starts minutes after the first book ends, and presents the second half of the quest.
While Spellsinger was about the experience of ordinary life in the Wizards' World, Hour of the Gate shows us the extraordinary -- having crossed the Warmlands on their quest to prevent the Plated Folk from conquering the world, the heroes now set off through legendary lands in search of allies in the coming war. What they find is by turns awe-inspiring and terrifying, and Foster shows a great talent for minimal descriptions that evoke strong images.
As before, we're primarily seeing Clothahump's mighty deeds through Jon-Tom's eyes, and as such there isn't much actual spellsinging. Nevertheless, this book strongly captures the power and majesty that fantasy worlds can have.
As I noted in my review of Spellsinger, though, this is the last time that Foster takes his world seriously. As the series progresses, it shifts from being dark fantasy with a light touch to, by the end, the level of a knock-knock joke. If you're a completist who must read every book in a series, you may not want to get started on this one -- it's too depressing seeing where it goes.
the power of music [no spoilers].......2004-03-16
"The Hour of the Gate" is the second volume in the Spellsinger adventure about Jon-Tom, summoned to another world to help fight a growing threat to the lives of all sentient animals and possibly his own world.
Back cover of book:
Invasion of the Plated Folk!
The elders of Polastrindu watched in horror as Clothahump, wizard and turtle, spun visions of the coming invasion. Finally the Plated Folk had a magic potent enough to penetrate Zaryt's Teeth and the warmlands, igniting a devastating war between the species. The wizard and his earthly helper, Jonathan Thomas Meriweather, grad student and rock guitarist, must undertake the voyage into enemy territory in search of allies against the evil hordes from beyond.
So Jon-Tom, Clothahump, Mudge the Otter, flame-haired Talea and their motley crew set sail on a suicide mission down the treacherous river that winds through the subterranean lair of Massawrath, Mother of Nightmares, across Helldrink through a tunnel of cold flame to the center of the earth. It is a perilous journey few have attempted, and none have ever survived.
Now the peace-loving student must become a soldier and crusader, fighting with sword and song. For strumming his otherworldly duar, he is the maker of magic, his music conjuring configurations, transforming Jon Meriweather into the
Spellsinger
End back cover of book.
Since the story picks up where the prior volume ended, combining the two would be welcome. The earthly education in an alien landscape fashions a fun fantasy hero of Jon-Tom. The battles and descriptions aren't deep but friendly for younger readers with some of the creatures encountered as rather creative. The characters aren't limited to unaccented English but have a range including Australian and Brooklyn, New York. Understanding a written accent can be more difficult than hearing it and the rare vulgar word (not beyond a modern schoolyard) should be noted.
As a fan of the classical, rock, and heavy metal music genres, I find the magic Jon-Tom creates with his duar exciting since I believe a well-constructed song can affect people with its intensity and power in a primal aspect.
Thank you.
A great sequel and preursor of better things to come........2004-01-27
Having delivered there message of impending doom to the mammals of the world, now Jon-tom and his friends seek out the help of the weavers. along the way Jon-tom begins to learn about his new found talent of spellsinging, making magic through music. He also pygmies with that wnat to sacrifice him, a river thats more than it seems, and an elder god from the edge of the universe. A thoourghly enjoyable read, ending in a climactic battle and Jon-Tom's awakening to great power.
Don't miss this great follow-up to part 1!!!.......2002-07-06
I recently decided to rekindle my LOVE for Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger series and have been blasted back 20 years to when I first read them!! It took me on a wonderful adventure as a teen and has taken me back on that journey again. This is an AWESOME trilogy and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anybody who would enjoy a fun, easy reading series with interesting places that only Foster could paint a picture of in your mind!! You'll find yourself cheering for Jon-Tom and Crying for Talea. I actually called out "Falameezar" when he returned!!! (You'll have to read the book)
If you don't have time for all 6 Spellsingers (sorry, I don't consider books 7-8 part of the trilogy) DON'T miss the chance to at least read the 1st (Spellsinger) to meet the characters and this one to enjoy the war, as only Foster could tell!!
Believe me, once you read the first 2, you'll want to keep going, to see what other adventures Jon-Tom and Mudge embark on! THEY ARE A BLAST!!!
Adventures Abound, The best of the Spellsinger series.......1997-06-26
Beyond doubt the best of Foster's Spellsinger Series. It brings together some of the most memorable characters you could hope to meet in any Science fiction or fantasy novel and mixes them all together in a story that takes your breath away.
Magic and mayhem,fire-breathing marxist dragons and a voyage into the very mouth of hell itself lead you gently (!) toward a finaly that culminates with an almighty war.
Journey along with Jon-Tom, Mudge, Talea and others as they are forced to take a journey from which they may not return!
Despite being part of the Spellsinger series, this novel could quite possibly be a book unto it own. Enough action and adventure to fill any palatte, this is one book you MUST read.

Book Description
By brilliantly demonstrating how important it is for Christians to recover and eschatological sensibility, and by performing the act of recovery in a most remarkable way, James Alison has made a major contribution. --Gil Bailie, author of Violence Unveiled
Customer Reviews:
this book opened my mind and heart.......2005-09-07
I teach eschatology and was attracted by the subtitle of this book, the first by James Alison that I read. It led me to all of his other books. The experience was electrifying and life-changing! To use the language of St. Luke, my heart burned within me (Luke 24:32) and the scales came off my eyes (Acts 9:18). I saw so many troubling passages in the scriptures, especially the New Testament, with new eyes. I have given away at least 20 copies.
Editing Needed.......2003-08-02
I knew I was in trouble when I read the second sentence of Chp. 1. "Theology is perhaps for those of us who can't find an obvious sense in what may be very simple perceptions, ones which are understood intuitively by better Christians than ourselves; theology would be for those of us who are obliged to the hard labor of dragging our obstinate intellects through the spines and thistles of our own self-deciet so as to bring each thought, each remnant of intellectual pride, captive before Christ, ploughing out meaning from arid and sterile soil." This book is filled with tortured syntax and run-on sentences. The author himself tells us that the book is his own translation of lectures he gave at a theological institute in Chile. Too bad, I think he has forgotten how to communicate in English.
All of this is unfortunate, because the author seems to have something important to say. He teaches the meaning of eschatology within the context of resurrection and the life of the 'victim' Jesus. This is an important corrective to the wild eschatologies so popular not only among some in Latin America but also deeply influential to most American Christians, too. We all need to hear Allison's important reminder that God is not out to do violence against us. God loves us. A patient editor could have helped him to make this point more effectively.
re-constructing our view.......2001-02-12
J. Alison offers the view of faith from the side of the victims. He guides us through a tour of our preconceptions an all other ideas we take for granted, without even analizing them to see if they are contradictory. It is critical of violence, not only the one we recognize as such, but also the violence of our high and mighty motality, and of our socially accepted ways of excluding those we fail to understand.
