Book Description
". . . an extremely important novel . . . quite startling in its revelations of money and gender as key social mechanisms in nineteenth-century Brazilian life."
Daphne Patai, professor of Spanish and Portuguese and of women's studies, University of Massachusetts at Amherst
"It is a truth universally acknowledged . . ." that a single woman in possession of a good character but no fortune must be in want of a wealthy husbandthat is, if she is the heroine of a nineteenth-century novel.
Senhora, by contrast, turns the tables on this familiar plot. Its strong-willed, independent heroine Aurélia uses newly inherited wealth to "buy back" and exact revenge on the fiancé who had left her for a woman with a more enticing dowry.
This exciting Brazilian novel, originally published in 1875 and here translated into English for the first time, raises many questions about traditional gender relationships, the commercial nature of marriage, and the institution of the dowry. While conventional marital roles triumph in the end, the novel still offers realistic insights into the social and economic structure of Rio de Janeiro in the mid-1800s. With its unexpected plot, it also opens important new perspectives on the nineteenth-century Romantic novel.

Love or Money.......2003-09-30
This book talk about a romence, Aurelia got maried to Seixas after she got rich. She wants to see if he loves her or not, because she was poor in the past and he didn`t get married to her when she was poor. I do not recommend it because this book is a little slow.
Not For Everyone.......2002-10-24
Alencar was Brazil's first great novelist, at a time when the country was still developing its own identity. "Senhora", published in 1875, is one of his best. Alencar was nothing if not prolific, he wrote dozens of novels, plays, and poetry, and worked as a journalist and politician. "Senhora" is interesting because it came out during a period when so little serious fiction featured strong women as protagonists. Aurelia, the title character, is a beautiful young woman who comes into a huge inheritance in 19th-century Rio de Janeiro and overturns social conventions by buying the husband of her choice. So the story's real depth and primary point of discussion revolves around Brazil's upper class norms, women's social roles, and the power of wealth. It is interesting in this regard. Alencar's Romanticism is rooted in a sort of pre-revolutionary distaste (if not disgust) for established social conventions. He was a wealthy intellectual criticizing his own milieu.
Perhaps his descriptions of wealth --pages dedicated to the delicate inlays in a single piece of furniture or the passion of a waltz-- are overwrought, and may strike some readers as being born of Alencar's lust for upper class pursuits, rather than of any detached criticism of them. Readers must be prepared for these careful descriptions of wealthy follies, for by modern standards very little happens in the story. Alencar was a Romanticist, meaning that he cultivated in his writing elements of anti-classicism, of free-form emotion, and of descriptions of settings rather than tracing the chronology of a plot. This is a story driven on one level by its complicated prose and on another by its social criticism and the depth of its characters. Modern readers looking for plot and action may not have the patience for this book, and may also find the ending (called a "surprising twist" by some critics) to be a bit of a cop-out. It's as though Alencar didn't want to write any longer or didn't want to disappoint what he imagined to be a primarily female audience thirsting for romantic closure.
A brazilian romantic classic.......2000-01-16
A read this book a long time ago, in high school, and enjoyed it very much. For those of you who know nothing about brazilian literature, here goes a little profile about the author: "JOSÉ MARTINIANO DE ALENCAR was born in Mecejana, Ceará, on 1 May, 1829, and died in Rio de Janeiro on 12 December, 1877. He studied law in São Paulo and Olinda, and then threw himself into the journalistic world of Rio de Janeiro. He later entered politics becoming a deputy and eventually Minister of Justice. The refusal of the Emperor, however, to accept his nominatiou as senator caused him to retire from public life. One of the most prolific of Brazilian writers, José de Alencar was at the same time journalist, novelist, dramatist and poet. He was widely read in French literature, and romantic writers such as Dumas, Chateaubriand and Hugo had a profound influence on him. To the romantic mood of the day he added a fervent patriotism, which found its ideal subject in the history of his conntry, and especially in the life and legends of the Brazilian Indian, whose champion he became (c. f. Gonçalves Dias in poetry). His interest ranged the whole length and breadth of Brazil, and there are few regions of that vast country which did not provide subjectmatter for his pen. He practically created the Brazilian historical novel, and achieved wide popularity with the publication of such works as O Guarani (Rio, 1857); As Minas de Prata (Rio, 1862); and Iracema (Rio, 1865). The exuberance of his frankly avowed romanticism and a pompous, declamatory style are now very foreign to our modem taste, but his gifts as a story-teller and his patriotic spirit will always ensure him a place among Brazil's most popular writers. Other major works: O Gaúcho (Rio, 1870); O Tronco do Ipê (Rio, 1871); Ubirajara (Rio, 1874); Senhora (Rio, 1875)."
give your heart a good work-out! ejercicio para el corazón!.......1999-11-05
This book is amazing! Very romantic in a unique, intense, vivid, ironic, and poetic way. The author geniously has created a most remarkable woman whom, through money, will buy her ex into marriage with hope that he will be torn enough between love and their game of ironic humiliation to break out his profound feelings of love for her and see how hers painfully never faded. an excellent novel, one of the best i have ever read!

(how's that translation? ¿qué tal la traducción?)

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
For centuries, interstellar prospectors had searched for the fabled worlds of the Three Kings, the lost El Dorado of the galaxy. But if any found it, they were never heard from again. The mad cyborg Prophet, Ishmael Hand, discovered the mysterious system, with artifacts indicating a superhuman technology, and he had refused to reveal its location before vanishing forever into history. Two more recent expeditions have found the Three Kings. A starfaring evangelist-Doctor Karl Woodward, preacher and leader of the starship The Mountain-followed a clue and found it, but never returned. Then a spacegoing salvage team followed Woodward's trail, and also vanished. Now a chance encounter between what's left of the once-mighty human military with an inexplicable alien force has brought an armed expedition to the third planet of the Three Kings, Kaspar. They will join forces with the survivors of the first two expeditions, who have been marooned both by alien powers and by human treachery, as they at last encounter the alien minds behind the mysterious triple planetary system-and they will face a decision that may determine the fate of the entire human race!

Answers are Revealed.......2006-04-30
We have seen what has happened to two earlier expeditions to the Three Kings. Now we encounter a mystery on the Human worlds. A mystery that begins with an old space captain transporting three pregnant girls. When the surviving space navy picks him up for tax evasion, they are first exposed to the mystery. Suddenly the navy's purpose is clear. There is something for them to do other than collect taxes. There are still fights to be fought.
The trail leads to an agricultural and zoological world. There they discover a conclave of power up to no good. Clues point to an involvement with the Three Kings. Finally the navy decides that they must mount a force to travel to the Kings. There they find more mysteries and survivors form earlier expeditions. Soon they realize where the answers must lie if they exist at all.
Very interesting. It leaves a feeling that there might be another book or series. But most of the original questions have been answered. Forces at work in the universe are explained as is the lure of the Kings. Although not Chalker's best work, it does manage to showcase his scale of wonder present is most of his work. A good read and a must for Chalker fans.
"Where's the rest of me".......2006-02-19
I used to like Jack Chalker's work and on the strength of his earlier books picked up this trilogy at my local library. The first two books were OK and he did generate some interest and tension in them but this last book was a big disappointment. This book should have been where he went for it and released all the tension he tried to generate in books one and two. Instead, he ran out of steam, lost interest in this project, copped out, take your pick. The big finish just dissolved into largely incomprehensible and unsatisfying mush and was about as interesting as three week old celery in the crisper drawer.
Best book of trilogy but weak ending.......2004-12-11
I agree with the other reviewers who have wondered where the ending is in this book. I give it 4 stars because I found it the best read of the three (Balshazzar and Melchoir were both tough hauls setting up the characters in their first halves) it really does feel like there's chapters, even a whole other book, missing at the end. I expected a 'To Be Continued' though I wouldn't really another book in this series.
I'm a huge Chalker fan from early on in his writing but this one could have been a large single rather than a trilogy, even though the Three Kings obviously lend themselves to the trilogy format.
Much as I admire Jack Chalker this trilogy is a weaker effort and probably only for fans.
Where's the ending ?.......2004-09-17
I am a big Jack Chalker fan, but this series hung me out to dry. The first two books are innocuous enough "brain candy", but Kaspar's box seems like Jack grew tired of writing this series. A very long lead up to an entirely too quick "ending"... though it's tough to call it an ending. Skip the series. One good thing... he got through an entire series without one of the characters ending up in a form/shape not their own. Might be a first for him.
Wish it were about 100 pages longer.......2004-08-23
This is the third in a trilogy which should be read in order. As always, Chalker develops the characters well. He also enlists a couple from the previous two books. I just got the feeling that about 3/4 of the way through, he decided to abridge the remainder of the novel that could have been. Arrival at the three kings is rushed, and all of the answers are spoon fed in the last chapter. It would have been better for me if it was drawn out, but then, now I have to wait for him to write his next book, as I have read all of Chalker's books. He is still my favorite Sci-Fi author.
