In this sequel to Pronto, Harry Arno has retired from bookmaking but is still closing out some of his outstanding debts. But then his collection agent, an ex-con by the name of Bobby Deo, goes to pick up $1,800 from Chip Ganz and ends up getting hired for a hostage-taking operation (like kidnapping "in a way," Chip tells him, "only different. A lot different.") When Harry's taken by his own man, it's up to United States Marshal Raylan Givens to track him down, in the same methodically relentless fashion he tracked Harry that time he ran off to Italy. Throw in a henchman named Louis Lewis with plans of his own and an attractive young psychic named Reverend Dawn, and you've got yet another crime story that'll keep you on the edge of your seat--occasionally chuckling to yourself--straight through to the finish. (And bonus points to loyal Leonard fans who can spot the crossover elements from Rum Punch and Maximum Bob.) --Ron Hogan

Book Description

Now that his mom's gravy train has derailed, gambling, debt-ridden Palm Beach playboy Warren "Chip" Ganz has decided to take somebody rich hostage—with the help of a Bahamian ex-con, a psycho gardener/enforcer, and the beautiful, if underfed, psychic Reverend Dawn. The trouble is they choose bookmaker Harry Arno as their victim, and Harry can scam with the best. The BIG trouble is ace manhunter U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is sleeping with Harry's ex-exotic dancer ex-girlfriend, and Joyce wants Harry found. And since nearly everyone has guns, locating and springing the captive bookie most probably can't happen without some measure of lethal difficulty.

4 out of 5 stars Not as Funny as "Pronto". Just as Entertaining........2005-06-16

"Riding the Rap" by Elmore Leonard is the sequel to his novel "Pronto" which I think it easily Leonard's funniest novel out of the ones that I have read. "Riding the Rap"
is not as funny as it's predecessor, but it's just as entertaining. We pick up with Harry Arno. Harry is an ex-bookie who has now retired from the business but is going around collecting outstanding debts with help from gardener turned gangster Bobby Deo. When Bobby goes to pick up a debt from a man named Chip Ganz, Chip gives Bobby a proposition (kidnap Harry and steal his three million dollar fortune) Bobby obliges. With the help of one of Chips "henchmen" whose name is Louis Lewis and a beautiful fortune teller named Dawn Navarro, Chip kidnaps Harry and puts him in his attic. They don't think anyone will care that Harry is missing, but they end up being wrong.
Harry's ex-girlfriend Joyce (Joy, when she was a topless dancer) misses him and asks her current boyfriend, cowboy hat wearing US Marshall Raylan Givens.
Raylan doesn't really care that Harry is missing but agrees to Joyce's request and begins to try to track down Harry. Now, Riding the Rap, is equipped with all of Leonard's spectacular dialouge, plot twists, and offbeat characters and it is just as good as "Pronto" but I just think "Pronto" was funnier. Due to the fact that the characters
Tommy Bucks and Nicky Testa (who hilariously critisized each other in "Pronto" are absent for reasons you'll discover after reading "Pronto"). But still a great read...
B+.

5 out of 5 stars leonard's best.......2005-01-02

This is my favorite of the six Elmore Leonard books I have read. The dialogue is pure genius, the best I've ever read in any crime book.

4 out of 5 stars Riding the Rap.......2004-11-19

If any of you have read an Elmore Leonard novel, you know that he has a talent for being able to draw you in, but doesn't use writing formulas. He also uses REALLY realistic dialogue, stuff people would actually say.

Riding the Rap is a crime novel, through and through, about three deadbeats, Chip Ganz, a real sleaze who will go to huggers gatherings, pick up a teenager and call their parents for a ransom, Louis Lewis, an average criminal who is smarter that he lets on, and Bobby Deo, a bounty hunter who carries garden pruners instead of a gun. They kidnap a rich retired bookie, Harry Arno, who just so happens to be the pampered friend/ ex-lover of Joyce, the current love interest of Raylan Givens, a U.S. marshal, who disfavors Harry. When Harry disappears, Joyce convinces Raylan to look around for Harry and try to find him. Raylan's trail leads to Reverend Dawn Navarro, a certified medium and spiritualist (psychic), who has a suspicious role in the kidnapping. As Raylan comes closer and closer to solving the mystery and finding Harry, the three thugs argue and scheme behind each others' backs and generally have trouble doing anything.

The story finds has a thrilling and unexpected climax and a good pace, and has its fair share of twists and turns along the way. I think that most people my age (13) will enjoy it, although it is an adult book, so it does contain some adult content, which may not be appropriate for some. Other than that it's a good quality book, but not classic literature by any means.

4 out of 5 stars Comic Crime Romp.......2004-09-10

Elmore Leonard considered one the premier crime writers of our generation doesnt let up in Riding the Rap.
The usual dynamic relentless pacing is apparent which gives the books no dry spells.
The best part of this book has to be the characterizations and dialogues. Whacky characters include a Peurto Rican gardener gangster, a middle aged pothead gangsta wannabe, and a female psychic looking to make it.
As mentioned before, the pacing makes this book a gauranteed blast, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Riding the Rap.......2004-06-27

This is Elmore Leonard at his best. A Stetson-wearing hero, a soothsaying love interest, three greedy but likable villains, and--like in all Leonard novels--a story told through dialogue and not showy exposition . . . how could you go wrong? And if you really want to be entertained, buy the audio version read by the brilliant Frank Muller.

      Pronto—
For 20 years Harry Arno has operated a sports book in Miami Beach, taking bets on all the pro games. And for 20 years Harry has been skimming off the top of the profits, short-changing his silent partners, the local wiseguys. Harry is ready to retire to a villa on the Italian Riviera with his girlfriend Joyce, when he becomes the fall guy in an FBI assault on organized crime and ends up running for his life.

      Get Shorty—
In a novel filled with his signatures—nerve shattering suspense, crackling dialogue, scathing wit—Elmore Leonard proves once again why he sets the standard against which all other crime novels are measured.

In GET SHORTY , he takes a mobster to Hollywood, where the women are gorgeous, the men are corrupt, and making it big isn't all that different from making your bones: You gotta know who to pitch, who to hit, and how to knock'em dead.

      Riding the Rap—
It seemed like a brilliant idea. Three mismatched bad guys—a Palm Beach pothead, a Bahamian ex-con, and a Puerto Rican gardener turned mob enforcer—get together to carry out the perfect crime: kidnap retired Miami bookie Harry Arno and let him pay the ransom with his ill-gotten wealth. He can't go to the cops later. No one will miss him. It's perfect. Or so they figure.

They figure wrong. Harry's former girlfriend, ex-topless dancer Joyce Patton, misses him a lot. Now she's sending her current boyfriend, Stetson-hatted federal marshal Raylan Givens, looking for Harry. And Raylan always gets his man. And in this case, he also gets his woman—the last person to see Harry, a sexy psychic named Dawn. Dawn may be clairvoyant, or she may be in on the kidnapping. Either way, she gives Raylan a lead, and he's hunting on Florida's 24-karat Gold Coast for three loco hombres…and trying to bring Harry back alive…

Embark upon a quest rife with magic, wonder, and forces as dark as midnight. . . .

Parallel universes and grave danger are nothing new to Nathan Ward. During his last mission, he risked life and limb to retrieve the Grail for safekeeping. But Nathan’s adventures are just beginning. Lately his dreams have been transporting him to a desolate city whose people have fled–save for a sickly king and his daughter, Princess Nell. In their decaying hilltop castle, they live in the shadow of a terrifying curse inflicted by a sword that holds within its gleaming metal an ancient demon conjured by the universe’s most powerful wizard. It is a sword that brings death to anyone who dares to draw it from its sheath.

But the king is dying, and the legend claims that only a stranger can save him . . . and that this stranger alone is destined to awake–and defeat–the dark evil in the sword. But who among mortals and spirits could ever imagine that a boy materializing into alternate worlds still dressed in his pajamas could be the chosen one . . . the one entrusted with the long-lost plan to retrieve the Grail relics and save a dying cosmos?

                    Parents and Children

Bartlemy Goodman was home the night the burglars came. He usually was at home. For a man who had seen so much, and done so much, he now led a very tranquil life, or so it appeared, visiting the village of Eade mainly to see Annie Ward, who was widely thought to be his niece, and rarely venturing beyond Crowford. He was known to own the bookshop where Annie and her son lodged, and believed to be a collector, though no one was quite sure of what. The villagers accepted his unspecified eccentricities, and respected him for no particular reason, except that he appeared worthy of respect. It was a part of his Gift that he could pass almost unremarked in the local community, giving rise to no gossip, awakening no curiosity, though he had lived at Thornyhill, the old house out in the woods, since the original Thorns had sold up and all but died out generations before. Without really thinking about it, people assumed that the house had been bought by Bartlemy's grandfather, or some other elderly relative, and had passed on from Goodman to Goodman until it reached the present incumbent. They never wondered why each successive owner should look the same, or remain apparently the same age, around sixty; indeed, had anyone been asked, they would have sworn to little differences among the Bartlemys, to periods of absence following the death of one when another must have been growing up somewhere abroad. Nor did they ever wonder about the dog.

Every Goodman had had a dog, a large shaggy creature of mixed parentage and universal goodwill, with bright, intelligent eyes under whiskery eyebrows, and a lolling tongue. This one was called Hoover, because he devoured crumbs, and indeed anything else that came his way. The most wonderful cooking smells in the world would forgather in Bartlemy's kitchen, and the generosity of the leftovers made it canine heaven. Hoover had no reputation for savagery, welcoming every visitor, even the postman, with amiable enthusiasm, yet perhaps because of him the house had never been burgled before, except for the strange incident the previous year, and in that case the stolen object--which had belonged to someone else--had eventually been returned by Bartlemy himself, though no one knew how he retrieved it. The house was isolated, unprotected by alarms or security, and with the vague rumors that Bartlemy "collected" it should have been an obvious target, yet until that night in late April the criminal fraternity had left it alone.

The burglars were two youths, as the newspapers would have called them, an Asian boy from Crowford who was only seventeen, and his sixteen-year-old sidekick, who was big and ginger-haired and not very bright. Getting in was easy: they broke a window, which was stupid, because the back door wasn't locked, and were just checking out the sitting room when the dog pounced. He didn't bark: it would've meant wasting time. Bartlemy came downstairs, wrapped in an enormous dark blue dressing gown with stars on it, to find the ginger-haired sidekick shivering in a corner while the other boy lay on his back with Hoover standing over him. He wasn't growling--he never growled--but the boy could see, behind the panting tongue and doggy grin, two rows of large yellow teeth that wouldn't have looked out of place on a wolf. There was a knife lying on the rug a little way away. Bartlemy picked it up by the blade. Afterward, the boy puzzled over how the house owner had known to come down, when neither the intruders nor the dog had made much noise.

"This is--this is assault," the youth stammered, keeping his voice to a whisper. "I can sue."

"I haven't assaulted you," Bartlemy pointed out in his placid way.

                    "The dog--"

"He hasn't assaulted you, either." Yet, said the ensuing pause.

"We didn't mean no harm," offered Ginger, between sullenness and fright.

                    5 out of 5 stars A terrific trilogy..........2007-01-17

I've read the first two books of this trilogy and thought they were wonderful. I can't wait for the third book. Hemingway uses the Arthurian theme of an aged wizard and a young boy living in the present. The boy has a heritage that he slowly discovers throughout the books. These books are on my shelf with other Arthurian themed books. It's extremely well done.

3 out of 5 stars I am dreaming of another dimension..........2006-05-13

...where something less mundane happens. Don't get me wrong... great setup in book one, characters, possible plot, etc., but I found this story a bit boring.

I find it difficult to relate to a 14 year that thinks like an adult; a super-mom who is a bit unbelieveable; and I could care less about a teenage witch using her powers to woo a potential boyfriend (I can get the drivel from the tube).

That said, the back drop is interesting and the underlying plot has potential... worth a read if you have got anything else around... Personally I would go with George Martin, Donaldson, Orson Scott Card, J.V. Jones, Fiest (some), etc.

5 out of 5 stars enchanting fantasy .......2006-03-30

When Anne's husband died, she followed him into a realm beyond ours and when she returned she was pregnant. When Nathan was born, she knew her husband didn't impregnate her but a being from that other dimension did. At the age of fourteen Nathan has the ability when he is dreaming to transport himself into parallel universes and last year he brought the Grail back to his own realm and gave it for safe keeping to his honorary uncle Bartley a wizard who lived for many centuries.

The Grail was forged on the planet Eos along with the Sword and the Crown a millennium by the Grandir. The objects were sent to various worlds so they would be out of harms way and will be used at the proper time to save Eos from destruction. Nathan now dreams of a medieval world where the realm is dying due to the illness of the king and the evacuation of the people who fear the hidden spirit sword. Princess Nell and Nathan meet and both care for each other but he has a job to do to save that world and once it is finished he no longer wants to dream himself to that place because he knows he belongs in his own world.

Although the target audience for THE SWORD OF STRAW is teenagers, adult will find this enchanting fantasy very enjoyable. Nathan and his mother are matter of fact about his ability to transport himself physically to another world just as they accept magic exists. This coming of age tale focuses on many characters, all of whom seem very real and act according to their natures. There is much action in this character drawn tale and readers will be eager to read the first book in this fantastic trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars No Middle Book Let Down.......2006-03-27

Many times the middle book of a trilogy is a letdown. You need it to complete the story, but the denouement and all the concluding action is in book 3.

Not so in "The Sword Of Straw". Nathan has grown in many ways from the child of "The Greenstone Grail", but he still is this kid who ventures into other worlds, other universes, in his pyjamas. The book also is a well done look at the problems of puberty both for Nathan and his pal Hazel. Poor Hazel "falls in love" with a good looking boy at school, and is willing to deal with Lilliat, the witch/elemental from the first book, so that she can get a magic spell to act as a love potion. With expected bad results.

I thoroughly enjoyed Nathan's venturing into the universe where the second of the Grail relics is sequestered. Well written people with consistant understandable motivations interact with our boy hero.

One thing that bothers me, though. I have NO idea why the author, or perhaps her editor felt it necessary to utilize "the f-word" in her story. Yeah, it was just once, but it seems egregious and unnecessary.

Still and all, this was an excellent middle book, and I look forward very much to the conclusion of the trilogy, and anything else Ms. Hemingway might choose to put in front of us.

In an unnamed city, genetically engendered seemingly ageless messenger boys are being killed. At the request of an old bookstore owner, the also nameless protagonist (on the back cover he is called Stavrogin, and later in the book, Stavrogin is revealed to be his mother's maiden name sets off to solve the murders. Along the way, he runs into some of the city's more interesting characters in his quest to stop whoever is killing the messenger boys. That in a nutshell is the plot of The Messenger Boy Murders.
This book is an interesting read. When a book starts with a gigolo dwarf who seemingly has psychic powers and is in love with his pet monkey, then you know your in for a memorable read, or that you have entered a David Lynch movie. The characters in this book lend a great deal to its charm. Most if them don't have names, and are called little quirky names by the protagonist, such as The Irish cap man, who does nothing but drink every time he shows up, in fact there is only once he isn't drinking. There is Wolfscientist; a scientist who became a stockbroker to make ends meet.
The main character is not a very heroic character. He drinks, extremely too much, he doesn't form good first impressions of people, and he's an all around spoiled brat who thinks too highly of himself, but he is kind and truly wants to stop the murders. All in all, The Messenger Boy Murders is a quick and interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive introduction to Girard's work.......2003-02-11

One of the most interesting aspects of this good general introduction to the brilliant work of Rene Girard is the interview with editor James G. Williams, which touches on Girard's biography and his conversion to Catholicism. The other texts included here span the entirety of his long career as literary critic, groundbreaking anthropologist, and Biblical exegete. The texts address all facets of mimetic theory, from triangular desire to scapegoating, sacrifice, Satan, and the paradoxical place of Nietzsche in the history of mimetic anthropology.

In the academic landscape of victimization theories, deconstruction and post-modernism, here arises a singular voice that cuts to an all encompassing generative theory of civilization. It is a theory that explains why we buy Nike, why we go to war, and how we achieve peace. It would be better known in academia except this poor soul has the unfortunate timing of discovering a theory that objectively validates the truth of Catholicism, when Christianity (and even worse Catholicism) is out of vogue.

His theories have been described as "among the most profound intellectual discoveries of our time" and "a comprehensive vision of the psychological, sociological, political, and religious processes of sin and redemption"

If you are a thinker interested in social critique and a theory that has the power to restore Western Civilization - buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Key to All Mythologies.......2001-05-31

This is a remarkably complete introduction to Rene Girard's ideas. His key theory has the clarity and simplicity of a mathematical proof--desire is not an innate drive but a behavior we learn through imitation (mimesis). When we mimic our model's desire for the same object, violence breaks out. Through ritual scapegoating, human communities manage to divert this violence by directing it at a random victim (thus hiding its real source in mimetic rivalry). According to Girard, this mechanism is at work across all times and cultures, and shapes the plot of nearly every major novel. For those with a suspicion of grand unifying theories, his idea raises many questions. Even more controversial is his belief that Christianity brings an end to myth by exposing the scapegoat's innocence. Christ doesn't die as a sacrifice to God for human sin; instead, the crucifixion reveals the fiction at the root of all sacrifice--the victim's culpability. This helps to humanize one of Christianity's more troubling doctrines, but it also asks us to believe that the authors of the New Testament understood the workings of mimetic desire 2000 years before Girard articulated the theory. Read the book and come to your own conclusions. Whatever you decide, after reading Girard you'll look at myth and religion with new eyes.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Strong Introduction to a Visionary Thinker.......2001-01-23

This is one book that takes time to fully digest. I first encountered Girard in 1998, and his work becomes more significant for me with each passing year. The basic ideas are pretty easy to grasp, but they have a nasty habit of reorienting any context you place them in. His scapegoat theory has something urgent to say to many disciplines: literature, religion, philosophy, psychology, and ultimately anthropology--Girard engages them all. His analysis of the Judeo-Christian scriptures is definitely the most illuminating that I have read, and there is evidence that his influence is spreading.

If you are looking for a thoughtful book that takes the Bible seriously without the tired liberal/conservative food-fight, this one won't disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Girard may just be the most profound thinker in 2500 years.......1998-11-23

I don't think there is any doubt that Rene Girard is the most profoud thinker in the past 2500 years. I go back that far to include his transcendence of both Plato and Aristotle. Translate his insight into the human condition into the waning years of the 20th century--the most murderous century in human history--and we may yet survive the 21st century with some measure of humanity. Thank God we have a thinker who empathizes the human condition and has the ability to articulate it. Right now, he is as close to the "second coming"`as we have.As one of Shakespeare's characters put it: "I thank God for you, sir!"

In the book Weekend Vacation, by Ken Girard, the Primave family go on a weekend vacation to Scroon Lake. Their daughter, Ivy gets in a fight with a boy named Hank. That night he was found dead by Peter and Larry Markham. The police get there and start asking questions. Ivy's parents find blood on Ivy blouse and they knew it was time for them to live. This book was Ok, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone and I didn't like the ending.
