Book Description

On the reservation, danger looms everywhere, rising out of fear and anger, deprivation and poverty. Fiery-haired Louise White Elk dreams of both belonging and escape, and of discovering love and freedom on her own terms. But she is a beautiful temptation for three men-each more dangerous than the next-who will do anything to possess her...

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars amazing writing, decent story.......2006-04-22

Before the last 50 pages of this book, I was very disappointed. While all of it is beautifully written, a large portion of the story drags. This is something I would have understood and even appreciated if I felt I were learning about the characters' culture in the meantime, but I didn't. I began to resent the main character as if she were an autobiographer wasting my time with a narrative that wouldn't interest anyone as much as it did herself.
That being said, the story becomes much more alive, as far as action as well as geniune, important emotion near the end, and my impression of Louise grew favorably with it. But that didn't erase the effort I'd had to put forth to get though the majoity of the book.
Overall, I wish that either the storyline had been faster paced or that the downtime had been used more effectively, helping me relate to the characters and their heritage.

5 out of 5 stars She's as fabulous as her book!.......2006-03-30

I was one of Debra's students at UM in Missoula and can say that she is as amazing as her book. Anyone who gets the opportunity to see her read in person will not be disappointed. Because I knew her during the period she was writing the book, it has a special place in my heart. I gave a friend an autographed copy and she carried it around for weeks after she read it.

5 out of 5 stars This is her first novel? Amazing!.......2006-02-21

I read through a few of the reviews and was a bit surprised with the comment that Louise's relationship with Harvey was contrived among other things. I was completely absorbed in this novel and felt that it was an artfully told story, I would give it a 6 if possible. I grew up in that area, going to high school in Missoula. My parents live on the Flathead Reservation and my sister went to high school in St. Ignatius. When other high schoolers were taking French and Spanish, she was learning Salish. I am a very white skinned, blue eyed, freckled decendant of Northern Europeans. My father is a true, genuine cowboy and cattle rancher. This book pulled me in not only because of the amazing way Earling captured the sights and smells of my home, but because of the undercurrent of feeling between the peoples living on the reservation, whites, Indians and those who didn't belong to either group because they belonged to both. At first when I put the book down I felt unsatisfied. I wanted to know what happened to Hemaucus Three Dresses. I think Earling's point in leaving that a loose end was that she was just an Indian and therefore disposable and that probably no one would ever invest the time and energy into finding out what happened to her. If it was a white man who killed her, well, she was just a dirty Indian. If it was an Indian, well, just chalk it up to internal Indian justice. I wanted Louise to make better choices. I believe her choices were rooted in hunger, survival and a self-loathing fostered by the nuns of Mission. It is completely plausible that she ends up spending so much time with Harvey the white land developer because in him there is a little hope of change. There is no love on either side of this "romance" and I think that is why a reviewer felt it contrived. He was using her for his pleasure. She was using him for an occasional hot meal, a chance to briefly feel special and the tiniest sliver of a possibility that he might take her away from the reservation. Mostly she was resigned to the fact that nothing would improve for her. The two Indian men in the story, Charlie Kicking Woman and Baptiste Yellow Knife are struggling with the same demons in profoundly different ways. In the end they come to the same resolution I think. Charlie is a policeman, second class citizen among the other officers, someone trying to behave like a white man and be better than the other Indians. It is a lonely, hated place to be. Baptiste chooses to return to the old Indian ways, starting with refusing to speak English at school, resulting in being locked in a store-room by the nuns and mysteriously escaping. He drinks because he is told he can't. He becomes mean and scary, even to other Indians. Louise is a bit of a surprise and unpredictable. She seems resigned to a hard life but when it counts she's a fighter, and she fights HARD.

As far as the metaphores, I was constantly amazed at her ability to take incongruous words and put them together to create a picture that was completely understandable. She had me tasting colors and smelling songs. Amazing. She often used the opposite of what she was describing to illustrate the point. For example: Baptiste's mother's house becomes lighter and lighter the way a tarp gets darker as it gets wet. Completely opposite but what a visual that really expresses a gradual lightening.

I absolutely loved the book. I highly recomend it. (By the way, the magazine reviewer was wrong, there are 4 men interested in Louise. Two are Indian, two are white: Baptiste, Charlie, Harvey and Jules the cowboy). They each see something in her that draws them.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful, poetic, disturbing.......2005-11-13

Any contemporary American Indian author worth her salt is bound to push the Anglo reader out of their comfort zone. Accurate portrayal of the lifestyle and circumstances of 21st century Indians necessarily involves portions of poverty, chemical dependence, and the torturous constant dissonance of incompatible cultures. Earling gives us all of that and much more in her maiden literary accomplishment. Make no mistake about it - this book is designed to damage your comfortable illusions. If the cultural icon Baptiste seems at times unbelievable, it is because, as a representation of the death throes of a once proud culture, he must be larger than life - at the same time as he is pathetic in his helpless struggle with the imported vices of the European invasion. Our protagonist, Louise, epitomizes the modern Indian (perhaps women generally) - alternately abused and protected by the white world and unsure just where she belongs or how she should act. You will better understand your complicity in the undoing of a valuable and noble culture if you have the heart to read this novel cover to cover, but if that's too heavy for you, just sit back and enjoy the powerful poetic telling of tales that is a hallmark of this genre. Earling will just get better and soon I hope. I'm ready for the next one.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent novel devoid of warm and fuzzies. .......2005-05-05

"Perma Red" is not a romance novel, but it is a love story. Not the kind of love that makes one feel warm and optimistic, but love that consumes the characters in the novel; the kind of love that breaks up a marriage and is seldom present without violence. At the center is the young, fiery, untamable Louise White Elk, who cannot be controlled by the three men in her life: violent, dangerous Baptiste Yellow Knife; pathetic, lovesick Charlie Kicking Woman; or wealthy, arrogant Harvey Stoner. Each longs to possess Louise, failing to realize that such a thing is impossible.

The characters in "Perma Red" are superbly written; they are dark, animal, flawed, real, and completely compelling. There's no clear hero. Where there is violence and death in the novel, it is senseless and thought-provoking. You will never doubt the authenticity. The stark portrait of reservation life is neither flattering nor hopeful, but it is tragically genuine.

In an interview the author, a professor at the University of Montana, tells that "Perma Red" was 10+ years in the making and scaled down from a manuscript of over 1,000 pages; in short, a real labor of love. I cannot imagine that the book was more powerful in its original form, since this version is so strong. I recommend it highly and hope the author publishes more soon.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars Weak.......2007-01-16

This book features a rogue (surprised?) from Oeble, Border Kingdoms, botching a "job", and getting three of his friends killed in the process. He pulls out from his original "contract" and tries to get as much gold for the item he obtained in the process. Of course, the item is not what it seems, so there is an agent of an evil cult involved, and blah blah blah...

First the things I liked. Byers does a good job of describing the lawless hell-hole that is Oeble, and the mentality of people that live there. The plot is OK, I guess, but it is a bit too predictable for my money. The reading flows nicely and there is no confusion whatsoever. The battle scenes are good, not Salvatore good, but still good. The beginning is fast and you get into action and plot in the first page of the book. The ending is OK, even leaving a back-door for a possible sequel (if anybody wants one). O yeah, and the names are probably the best bunch of character names I have ever seen in a fantasy book. I know it is probably unimportant, but I had to mention it.

Now, the characters. I have never seen more generic characters in my life. They (main and supporting alike) don't have a single characteristic that would make them stand out, and stick in memory more than ten minutes after you finish reading the book. They have no past and no future. At least they have cool names. Apart from the ranger, that is. The book is also a bit too battle-heavy in my opinion, but the battles are good, so that is no major complaint.

If the characters had even a bit of personality, this could have been a decent, three or four star book. If you like the Realms as much as I do, you will read it anyway. If you don't, you will be able to live on without reading this one.

      4 out of 5 stars Good story.......2006-03-16

I liked this one better than the first. It had better action and good character interplay. Anyone who likes the genre will enjoy it.

If you like books like this one, might I suggest another I've recently come across. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Continuing witht he Rogue series.......2005-08-15

This is the second stand alone novel in the Rogue series set in the Forgotten Realms. Richard Byers holds up his end of the bargin writing a fast paced enjoyable book.

There is nothing too complex about this book. Yet, there are a series of minor twists set within that make you start to think that the story may be more than what you first thought.

The characters are well described as is the setting where the story takes place.

I think the most enjoyable thing about this Rogue series thus far is that the main characters are flawed and as such the reader can relate more to them than the all powerful character that seems to be in most book lately.

      A very good read.

      4 out of 5 stars Adventurous misdeeds.......2005-03-10

Holy cow! There are a ton of unexpected twists and turns in the fast and easy read. Even if you find fault with the characters the pace is fast enough to keep this enjoyable.

I did find a few small editing issues (He instead of The and the like) but nothing that distracted from this adventurous caper.

This book was given to me and I finished it on a around the world plane flight. I have since found the other in the series and will read them.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great........2004-11-22

I'm not a great Richard lee Byers. I've found some of his other books difficult to read. But this one flowed better. And I enjoyed reading it.
The villans are excellent characters as is Miri. The lead character Aeron and the book in general, seemed to lack a little something.
And i'd like to see more stories about the villians or Miri. But not Aeron. Which possibly explains why I don't think the book is worth five stars.
If your a forgotten realms fan. You should enjoy this book. Although don't let the rouges title, lead you into thinking the books about thieves . There was little stealing , just alot of sneaking, fighting and double dealing.

Someone wants to rid the world of FDR and Stalin. Top TEC agent Jack Logan must find the culprit--and discover why he himself has been erased from history. . . .

In A.D. 2008, time travel is still the world's most closely guarded secret, and for the Time Enforcement Commission cops who protect it, there is sometimes a terrible price to pay. Jack Logan pays it when he comes back from a mission and finds no one recognizes him. He has lost his past, his present, and maybe even his future.

But that's only one of the ominous mysteries plaguing the agency. For not only are criminal time jumpers seeking to neutralize Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin, there's a lost chest of gold from the American Revolution, a beautiful TEC agent trapped in another time, and a madman with his own twisted ideas of what should have happened in the twentieth century. When all these events fatefully collide on a single day in 1930s Manhattan, Logan is the only one who can solve the puzzle linking the temporal anomalies to his own more personal dilemma . . .

              4 out of 5 stars It's a well-written, exciting, and suspenseful book........1999-07-09

Parkinson writes a delightful addition to the TimeCop series in Blood Ties. The characters are believable, and the plot action-packed. There is one slight contradiction at the end of the book, which would make timecops unneeded. But overall, a great book. I'm looking forward to the next one.

3 out of 5 stars Hopefully the third Timecop won't be the last..........1999-06-23

It helps to read the first two books in this series, but it is not necessary. Dan Parkinson is great at writing books that link together, but can still be enjoyed individually. I hope that this series continues in a fourth book. This book (and series) is fun reading that is perfect for fans of time travel. Imagine jumping back in time on a mission, only to return to a different history- where you don't exist. Yikes!

3 out of 5 stars Series stumbles at the final hurdle.......1999-05-25

I like Timecop. I like the movie, the aborted series, and the comics. I tried really hard to like this book too. Dan Parkinson is a competant and experienced author, who knows how to tell a tale and tell it well. The book is solid (if un-inspiring) entertainment from beginning to end, and I'm extremely happy that we got to read all three books after the TV series died such an ignoble death. Parkinson has done a great job of fleshing out the onscreen Time Enforcement Comission, adding his own characters to the mix. His take on the time travel technology is fun and thought provoking, as is his view of the clandestine world of temporal security in 2008. However, this book has a fatal flaw, in that in an entirely un-necessary section towards the end of the book, Parkinson introduces a concept that - when considered carefully - utterly invalidates the need for the timecops! The concept is also contradicted earlier in the book. That sort of sloppy logic has plagued time travel books, and I'm sorry to see it continued here. Still, if you enjoy time-travelling high adventure, pick up this book and the previous two in the series.

Bible Teacher, Derek Prince, in plain down-to-earth, easily understood language explains the Bible teaching on the act and attitude of Judging people and things. It shows how to "Judge righteous Judgement". Good Teaching!

5 out of 5 stars Judging according to the word.......2006-08-01

This book really laid out how, when and why we are to judge. I must admit that I had a lot of repenting to do. This book allowed me to see areas I was in error and bring correction to my life. Since I have read it I must say my words are being carefully spoken about others. There are many examples given to open your understanding. Derek Prince is a great teacher and as usual his works have humor as well as deliverance to the reader. It was very good.
