5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2004-08-28

On a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters last summer, I remember reaching the end of a mile+ long portage, flipping down the canoe from my shoulders, and, bearly breaking stride, plunging into Basswood Lake. My guide told me then of Paddle Whispers and of Douglas Wood's similar aprreciation for a well earned swim.

This summer, as I trained to be a guide, I finally got a hold of Paddle Whispers. Some nights I would read it aloud in the tent, pausing to listent to the cry of the loon or howl of the wolf. Wood's discriptions of everything I have felt on a canoe trip are so clear, even a non-canoeist could feel as if they were there. Reading Paddle Whispers is a great comfort to me when I get "Minnesota Sick".

For anyone who's tried to explain to others the "why?" of wilderness travel, especially canoe trips, this may be the answer! Must read it!!!!

PS- I don't like reading too much but I love this book, I think that says something!

5 out of 5 stars A superb book.......2000-03-15

This is not a how-to book about the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). (For that look to Patricia Bell's superb "Roughing it Elegantly.") Instead, Paddle Whispers explains why we go into the BWCAW, with its often attendant miseries, at all. The BWCAW is a wonderful, magical place and Douglas Wood captures its essence in all its glory in this masterful work. It's a quick read as well, and so is a wonderful introduction for the person wondering why so many find the BWCAW irresitible.

This book will transport the BWCAW veteran back into the midst of his/her favorite memories of past trips, and will provide inspiration for those considering their first adventure in the wilderness. For those who never intend to experience the wilderness first-hand, Paddle Whispers is a wonderful, spiritual, inspiring work in its own right.

A must-read for everyone, I purchased many copies as gifts for friends.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the essence of the BWCAW........1998-10-24

Not since Sigurd F. Olson has a writer captured the true essence of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Wood describes the spirituality and adventure of this magical place. A very quick read, full of great sayings, and stories. Perfect to read chapter by chapter (of course in front of a roaring campfire). A must read for any BWCAW veterans. It will transport you back any time you pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars My Child thought this book was great!!.......2005-10-26

As many parents probably know getting your child to read is not always the easiest thing to do. My very close friend suggested that I buy my son this book as something for him to do over a car 10 hour long car ride we were taking. To my surprise he absolutely loved this novel. I was so impressed that I tried to find other books written by this author, unfortunately I could not. What I did find out was that the writer of "X-tinction" Raylea Barrows was in fact a child her self. I can't express how impressed I was by this. This book would be a great stocking stuffer, giving kids something to do when they are snowed in. We can't wait for the next one to come out. Good job, Miss. Barrow.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read........2006-12-20

I have always been a big Star Trek fan, but this is the first of the books I have read. If the rest are this good I'll be thrilled. You don't have to know everything about Star Trek to enjoy this book. Whether a fan or not it's still a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Time and time again.......2006-09-10

The Enterprise was conducting a very demanding and dangerous scientific study, or rather Spock was conducting a very demanding and dangerous scientific study, the rest of the Enterprise was waiting for him to finish so they could leave, hopefully before the object being studied demolished the Enterprise. It was rather a relief then when they received a priority call to a nearby system. The relief was shortlived and soon the crew found itself dealing with time travel and paradoxes that threatened their lives and perhaps the space/time continum itself.

This is one of the earlier numbers of the classic Star Trek tie-in novelizations, originally issued in 1981, and is one of the best of the series. McIntyre has done an excellent job of portraying the characters and has delivered an exciting plot as well but has managed to avoid violating the cannon set down in the original series and ensuing movies.

This is an excellent novel that would be enjoyable to even the most casual fan of the classic series.

4 out of 5 stars Firmly in the top 10% of all Star Trek novels .......2007-08-21

[Review written Nov 2004]

This is one of the earliest Star Trek novels, and still ranks among the best in the genre. It's a fast no-frills read, weighing in at only around 225 pages, and the story involves murder, intrigue, theoretical physics and a classic time travel & save-the-universe type plot ... a theme that has since been mined nearly to death by a host of imitators over the past 20+ years.

By today's standards, it's a bit short, and I wished the authoress had spent more time exploring some of the interesting new characters she introduces, and not rushed the plot along quite so quickly ... but it's still an enjoyable read.

It's one of the few books in my Star Trek collection that's on my periodic rereading rotation.

5 out of 5 stars my first .......2004-12-25

This was the first ST book I read, have had it for years, but just recently re-read it. It's a good book, a bit sad, but a good one. It delves a lot into Kirk/Spock/McCoy's relationships. I also like how Sulu gets some special treatment in this story, which unfortunatly, we wont see again for quite a while. definitly check it out

4 out of 5 stars Mystery and Suspense mixed with the Star Trek theme!.......2003-07-18

This story reminded me a little of the ST:TNG episode, "Yesterday's Enterprise" -in regards to the ripple effects of time travel and how it is portayed in the story telling.

In my opinion, even though Star Trek usually goes overboard in their time travel stories, this one is written very well and is not to corny. Vonda McIntyre mixes mystery and suspense along with the original Star Trek theme. I found myself not wanting to put the book down -as to see the conclusion of the suspense and mystery. Vonda McIntyre stayed in on the Star Trek theme and focused on character development.

In this story the story focused mainly on Spock and Sulu. There is the usual romance for Kirk. It's not really a romance. He runs into an old flame that gets him thinking about marriage, life, etc. But here Sulu has the more passionate and tender romance and Spock meets up with an old science mentor who is the hero/villian of the story.

This book is a great read and hard to put down! Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Entropy Effects.......2003-01-04

The first all-new novel published by Pocket in the Star Trek franchise was written by an accomplished science fiction novelist, with a background in her own fiction, and a winner of a Hugo and a Nebula. One of the dangers of this type of author is a tendency to view the characters independently, rather than to use them as established in series continuity. Every author will play favorites with the characters, writing up the ones they like and assigning secondary roles, or completely ignoring, those they do not like. This is evident in McIntyre's first outing with the Star Trek characters.

The Enterprise is dispatched to observe a singularity, and discover the reason for its appearence. None like it, with no apparent explanation for its existence, has been observed previously. Spock is the closest qualified observer, and so he conducts the measurements, as the Enterprise spends six weeks in close proximity to the dangerous gravity well and radiation output. As Spock is working on the confirming observations, the Enterprise receives a top-priority call to a nearby starbase. The starbase personnel are confused, but they do have one duty that must be carried out: the ferrying of a dangerous prisoner to a maximum-security facility. The prisoner turns out to be a former physics teacher of Spock's, and the Vulcan cannot understand the danger posed. All records of the trial have been sealed and/or expunged.

Soon after the prisoner is taken on board, he breaks onto the bridge and shoots Captain Kirk with a spiderweb bullet, a terrorist device which causes prolonged death with great pain. The crew is horrified. The new security chief, Commander Flynn, is also killed in the assault. Spock finds that the dangerous nature of the prisoner, and his crime, is related to the professor's discovery of a simple method for time travel. This has also caused the singularity to appear, so the method is increasing the entropy of the universe, and will cause its end in less than 100 years. Spock must travel back in time himself to repair the damage to the time continuum, and save his captain and the universe. McIntyre writes well, and the book has a good plot, so the problem here is mostly with characterization.

So many of the regulars are out of character that it is often hard to take the book seriously. The author obviously likes Sulu, and to an extent Spock, while disliking Scotty and Kirk. Scott only gets "grumpy old man" stuff to do, and shows no other side of his character, aside from a measure of loyalty to Kirk. The captain is killed off halfway through the book, and might have remained that way had this book been made only of McIntyre's characters (which would have made a better book). The author also is enamored with her own characters, Commander Flynn and her security crew, and Captain Hunter, an old lover of Kirk's and the captain of a border patrol ship. There is a strongly feminist bent here, despite the small amount of time given to Uhura. The spiderweb bullet is a good invention, a projectile with tendrils that grow and crush the nervous system, reaching to the brain. The problem is, at one point McIntyre writes about visible tendrils that Spock avoids on a near-miss shot. Tendrils small enough to infiltrate the nervous system would likely be invisible to the naked eye. And another thing: when Spock endeavors to go back through time, he tells only McCoy, and ostensibly leaves the Doctor in charge of the ship. At no time was McCoy ever shown to be a command officer, and it would have been procedure (which Spock would have followed) to inform Scotty, who both was the next ranking officer, and thus should have been designated the conn, as well as being able to help to engineer the necessary parts for time travel.

It's a good story. It just doesn't work, as written, as a Star Trek story.

5 out of 5 stars Who Killed Capt. Kirk???.......2002-07-19

As Spock is preparing to complete some critical experiments, the Enterprise is ordered to transport a rogue scientist to a rehabilitation colony. En route, the prisoner escapes from the brig and fatally shoots Kirk! Now Spock must go back in time to prevent Kirk's death---or die trying.

The audio version of this book is an hour and a half long, and performed by George Takei (Sulu) with Leonard Nimoy as Spock. I must mention that Nimoy's performance is one of the best I have ever heard in the Simon & Schuster Audio Star Trek series. His depiction of Spock's intellectual and emotional struggle with having been a witness to Kirk's murder, figuring out that it never should have happened at all, and finally secretly building the Time Changer, with McCoy's help, are all incredibly believable, even painfully so. I could actually call this one of the spookiest Trek audio novels I've ever heard, since it soon become very difficult to figure out what's real and what's not.

Takei also shines on this tape, using French accents for Dr. Mordreax (the scientist), and Ian Brathwaite, the Aleph Prime district attorney.

My favorite lines: "Captain, you don't understand the problem! We're isolated! Official ships are rare! I haven't got the facilities to detain anyone so ruthless and charismatic.....and...intelligent. If he escapes, he could drop out of sight! He could begin again elsewhere! He's dangerous! Georges Mordreax makes people believe he can fulfill their dreams!"

Hearing Takei-as-Brathwaite say that never ceases to send chills up my spine.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad time travel story even if it is a bit "played out".......2003-04-19

Different versions of the "evil scientist" antagonist are traveling through time doing both evil and good, trying to both harm and to protect. It is up to Kirk & Co. (mostly Spock) to set things right. Although there are some problems with the story - most notably a bad characterization of Mr. Scott (I doubt he would be so quick to take sides against Kirk & Co.) - it does have its moments. In particular, the interplay between Spock and McCoy, the subplot involving Mr. Sulu, the characterizations of the security personnel and the Captain Hunter character.

3 out of 5 stars The Trouble with Time Travel.......2003-04-16

Stories revolving around time travel are difficult to review. The Entropy Effect is an exciting novel to read, and it captures the feel of Star Trek, but in the end, the story is rendered meaningless because it takes place in a timeline that has to be corrected. I suppose you could compare this work to the Deep Space Nine: Millennium Saga, though I preferred that series immensely. Still, The Entropy Effect is a fast-paced story that keeps your attention, and if you enjoy stories about time travel and alternate timelines, it's probably worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent Classic Star Trek time-paradox story.......1997-10-26

This story is a classic time paradox in the true spirit of Classic Star Trek. Strange events occur on the starship USS Enterprise which result in a crazed Professor killing Captain James T. Kirk! First Officer Spock investigates this tragedy & uncovers an experiment that threatens to unravel the very fabric of the universe. He must, therefore, put his own life at stake to save the universe, & his friend, Captain Kirk, by travelling through time using the same experiment, attempting to repair, & prevent, the damage from occuring!

Are you unsure about the whole topic of spritual warfare and want a book with a balanced Biblical perspective? Want to save your marriage? Do you want to be able to successfully battle pride, unbelief and lust? This book has it all. Check out page 198. The practice of remedy 1 saved my thoughtlife towards my husband. Page 36 remedy 4 brought me to tears and solidified my resolution to fight more fiercly against the sin that taints my heart, mind, body and spirit. It's the most relevant old book to our modern troubles I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Insight and understanding..........2002-08-13

In considering this work I am reminded of the song, "Killing Me Softly with His Song" in which the singer states that the singer has sung about her justas if he'd read her letters. He KNEW her, yet had never met her. This book could bring this to your mind too. The reader will find statements of Satan's "devices" - the strategies he used, lies he tells, etc. and one can recognize how these things have been a part of one's life at different times. The rememdies are unabashedly from God's written Word and are effective "treatment" for the issue at hand. Similar to C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" in exposing some schemes which tend to work against God's people, this is book can be used as a devotional, a discipleship reading, and a tool for counseling.

Next to most people's Bibles is a copy of John Bunyan's classic THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS. However, Brooks' amazingly convicting PRECIOUS REMEDIES should be on the other side. This is possibly the most valuable of all the puritan writings, and a must read for every Christian, especially those struggling and/or tampering with sin. Satan hates this work as it exposes his devices....and offers biblical methods to avoid and overcome them. Seek this one out at all costs. Banner of Truth ministries still carries this title.

                                Product Description
