Book Description
If you spend a lot of time thinking about “what might have been,” you’re not alone. In If Only, Neal Roese, Ph.D., one of the world’s top scientists studying regret, shows us that thoughts about what might have been are practically unavoidable. In fact, they are produced spontaneously by the brain with a very practical goal—to guide us toward improvement. But the same thoughts can bring the pain of regret. Is it worth the pain to get the improvement? Or should you live life with no regrets?
Luckily, it’s not a package deal. The surprising message of If Only is that we can manage our regret style to maximize the gain and minimize the pain. In an entertaining and upbeat book that weds lively science writing to practical self-help, Dr. Roese mines the research and shares simple strategies for managing your life to make the most of regret. You’ll learn:
•
Don’t Over-react. You may react to a regrettable situation by taking many fewer chances. Don’t. This only ensures that you will miss out on new opportunities.
•
Think Downward. Consider the downward alternatives. How could a bad situation have gone even worse? This makes you feel appreciative of what you have.
•
Do It. If you decide to do something and it turns out badly, research shows that it probably won’t haunt you down the road. (You’ll reframe the failure and move on.) But you will regret the things left undone.
•
Regrets are Opportunities Knocking. Our brains produce the most “if only” thoughts about things in our lives that we can still change. So consider regret as a signal flashing: It’s not too late!
If Only also shows that “if only” thinking plays a huge role across our lives, from how best to buy, to why we enjoy movies, how juries decide, and the way we choose someone to love. If Only opens a new window into the way our minds work and offers clear lessons for living more happily with the past.
“Fifteen years of research have been combined into a list of the top four biggest regrets of the average American:
• not getting more education
• career regrets
• regrets in love
• not spending enough time with kids
The list is essentially a summary of the biggest traps, pitfalls, and mistakes into which people like you might blunder. Look over the list and try to identify areas of your life that represent the greatest vulnerability to future regret. And act now to avoid regret later.”
—from If Only

I Did not Regret Reading This Book.......2006-07-13
This is a great read that explains how our minds work to protect us from ourselves, in a sense. If only(regrets)turn out to be helpful, in almost all instances, to help us either take constructive action or to reframe what we can not change. This is something that our minds does automatically after an action or inaction, and is the way that it immunizes us against always feeling bad about our sins of ommission or commission (though the feeling lasts a lot longer for the former). It's encouraging that we not only do this automatically, but that awareness of the process allows us to be alert to some opportunities in specific types of situations and to make better decisions. My only criticism is that an illustration or table may have been helpful in reinforcing the difference and the impact of a downward counterfactual vs. an upward counterfactual.
If Only It Could be..........2006-01-02
Shorter? 100 pages fewer? A bit more humorous? Less repetitious? I love the idea of this book, and large portions of it were interesting, but found it to be a "much of a muchness." I think cutting the book by 100 page by quoting fewer research studies would have made this a more agreeable and popular. As it is, I'm not sure if this book is meant to be psychology? Philosophy? Research?
That said, the concept is fascinating and this book is worth a read.
Embrace This Message.......2005-03-23
At first I was not clear of the message author Neal Roese was sending - until I really dug into the text of this excellent book. He uses the metaphor of a simple coin flip and the "two potentials morphing into one" - to explain the "factual" taking form in a simple turn of events.
I was afraid this would be a book that pointed at the "what is wrong" with life.
Instead, Roese teaches the reader how to move from "woe is me" into (in the words of Thoreau which are in the book) "making the most of your regrets, never smother sorrow, but tend and cherish it until it comes to have a separate and integral interest. To regret deeply is to live afresh."
A-ha, I said, as I read along nodding.
I also appreciated the balance of half of the book being explanations and examples and half the book being "putting counterfactuals to work for you."
Sometimes books like this explain it all and then do very little with application.
This book really assists and empowers the reader to apply what they have learned.
My favorite quote in the book is "Neglecting the messages of your own emotions can mean persisting in counterproductive behaviors and missing unique opportunities for growth and renewel."
YES! No more denial of emotions, instead - we learn how to use them positively through what Roese calls, harnessing regret to create new action rather than suppressing regret.
Yes, I am convinced - more of us need to read and embrace this message.
Puts every day thought into context!.......2005-02-19
Since I was rear ended last year, and during my struggles to recover, I've often thought: "If only I had taken the other route I could have avoided all this." In reading this book, Dr Neal Roese undercovers that that type of thinking is not only normal, it is healthy. Indeed I could have been in one of his study sample groups as wondering "if only" has helped me to positively move forward at many points in my life. Congratulations Dr Roese on presenting the science of counterfactuals in such a reader-friendly way. Anyone who strives for better in career, love, relationships or family should read this.
A Successful Fusion of Science with Self-Help.......2005-01-27
Professor Roese's new book has been a surprise and a delight. His ability to explain, with wide-ranging and pertinent examples we can all relate to, the scientific concepts and research results that have guided his academic career, is both impressive and long overdue in such "populist" books. This is one of the few books we will see in the personal development or self help shelves which is in fact underpinned with credible, mainstream, and up to date science. Neal Roese comes across as a wise, informative, and very accessible conversationalist, yet he does not do what is all too common in other books of this ilk...become shrill, preachy, or "therapeutic". The message of his book, which speaks to those of us who in fact DO have regrets and conflicts, and who cannot simply push them aside or "get real" as per other authors, is upbeat without the typical rah-rah naivity seen so commonly elsewhere. I would recommend this book without hesitation.

Very Slow.......2006-06-25
Where to begin? First of all, we don't even get a murder until page 84 - and things go downhill from there. Did Ms. Geary REALLY get advice from a police department on proceedures? I doubt it.
First of all, we have a mortuary technician smoking a cigarette (NO!) at a crime scene, then tossing it on the ground, snubbing it with his foot and LEAVING IT THERE! I don't think so. The CSI would bag is as potential evidence. I almost tossed the book at that point but had to see what else Geary screwed up.
Sure enough, on page 98, the corpse has plastic bags on her hands! EEEKKKK! NO, NEVER - NOT DONE! The moisture destroys evidence. Aparently grimlins were at work in Geary's computer because low and behold on page 100, the M.E. took PAPER BAGS off the body's hands! HELLO?? Can you say edit???? Oy, I can barely go on - the photographer took digital photos - they can be altered so easily that most techs are going back to good old film or at least taking two sets of photos, one film, one digial. What else? There is a handy dandy tape recorder on the tray with all the instruments! Why doesn't this poor M.E. have an overhead mike with a foot pedal - like every other big city morgue? I won't even begin to say how confused I got between Aiden and Arch, and I'd LOVE to know why most of the women have weird names, like Morgan and Reilly and ... who knows? Who cares? I'm not even sure who the main protagonist of the book is suppost to be! I THOUGHT it was Lucy, then she disappeared for several chapters and we bounced around (so much that, once again, I got confused). Then she's back! Well, at this point, I simply do not care who did it. I gave up and went on to the next book in my pile. There are too many good, technically correct mysteries out there to read. Thank goodness I got this dog from the library. I would have REALLY been upset if I'd paid for it!
Fun mystery, great characters.......2005-01-27
I am a fan of Ms. Geary's from her other books, and I was thrilled to see this new mystery with new characters. I had it figured out, but it was still fun to read and I enjoyed the characters so much, I look forward to seeing them again.
Regrets that it's finished.......2004-09-18
This is a reveiw of all 3 of Nancy Geary's books, MISFORTUNE,REDEMPTION & REGRETS ONLY. Well written stories, sure to keep you interested and guessing until the very end. If you like a good mystery, keep this author in mind as she is excellent.
one of this year's best police procedurals.......2004-07-28
The Wilder Center is going to be the most advanced mental health facility in the country with the most up to date therapy, medical practices, and cutting-edge technology. Dr. David Ellery is the leading contender to run the center, something he wants beyond measure but when his sixteen-year-old patient, Foster Merritt commits suicide, the position is offered to his co-worker Dr. Morgan Reese instead.
Nobody except Morgan knows that Foster was one of the twins she gave away at birth. She wants to meet Foster's sister Avery and the adult son she walked out on, Archer when she divorced his father Rodman. She contacts the twins' biological father so he can be there when Avery meets her but he does not want anything to ruin his society marriage. Morgan's body is found on the eighth hole at Fairmount Links; the victim of a blow to the head and a gunshot wound. Various suspects hated Morgan, but who would detest her enough to kill her? Philadelphia homicide detective, Lucy O' Malley, the girlfriend of Archer, is going to do her best to find out.
Nancy Geary has written one of this year's best police procedurals. Readers can actually visualize the investigation and wonder which one of the various suspects was pushed to the breaking point. Ironically, readers will have more sympathy for the killer than the victim because Morgan tries to undo actions by hurting people who got in her way. REGRETS ONLY is a memorable work that will long be remembered after the last page is turned.

Sex in the City!.......2001-06-25
A compelling novel of two passionate and talented women and the man they both loved. Great sex!
Rubbish.......2000-06-07
This is a weak entry into the moist thighs genre by Sally Quinn, wife of former Washington Post Editor-in-Chief Ben Bradlee. She knows much about what she writes from personal experience (power, money, D.C. society), particularly about affairs with married men in positions of power (when she was a young reporter for the Post she used to leave flirtatious, bawdy notes in Bradlee's office, as an opening in a gambit to seduce him. He was a married man with a son).
After she was given a wide berth in the Post's fledgling Style section and achieved some notice, she attempted to transition to TV and CBS, falling flat on her face. Beating a hasty retreat, she raced back to the safe confines of the Post, marrying the now divorced Bradley in the late 70's.
She became a chronicler of the D.C. party-'n-power set, noted for a rather catty, petty, rapier style. Among other highlights (lowlights?) she claimed that President Carter's National Security advisor Zbignew Brazensky(SP?) had pulled down his fly in front of reporter, as a vulgar come-on, and that pictures existed of the incident (this was a COMPLETE LIE). The paper issued a mealy-mouthed apology, and Quinn kept her job (nice to have the editor as a husband).
She continued to write a lot of society pap and begin writing books such as this one, a rather forgettable effort. In 1998, she caused a stir in official Washington by writing an article claiming that many of the people in her social set, the kind of permanent government of folks in institutions like the press and think tanks and people like David Gergen who go between more than one of these worlds, and a set that doesn't change with elections, felt particularly disgusted about President Clinton (a particularly hilarious trick of projection considering her use of sex for career advancement, and her lying in print about things such as Zbignew's pants). The article was a classic piece of arrogant reporting, were she made copious mention of "our Washington" (it went without saying that this was a small slice of White Ward 3 West of Rock Creek Park) and what this interloper Clinton, who happened to be elected twice by the American people and enjoyed 60% approval ratings, had done to it.
In an appearence on C-SPAN'S Washington Journal shortly after the bunk came out she was rightfully pummeled with viewers phoning in from coast to coast calling her on her smug arrogance (call up C-SPAN viewer services and try to order it, it really is a choice piece of televsion). As the coup-de-grace, the entire country flipped her kind and their way of thinking the bird when the Democrats actually gained seats in Congress.
I guess this review isn't much about the book, as it is about Ms. Quinn, but her personage kind of rivals the book in it's unpleasantness.
If you like Jackie Collins You'll Love Sally!.......2000-03-14
Sally uses the Washington Glamour and Intrigue the way Jackie uses California and Vegas to lure in the reader. Her descriptive writings put you there, and her style keeps you reading.
Inside the Beltway, then inside the belt........1998-01-02
Novelistically and in almost every other way, Regrets Only is a near-irredeemable piece of crap. The book remains, for whatever work went into it, Danielle Steel with a chipped enamel of Big Names and Big Issues. That said, this book may be of interest to someone who lives in Washington or has a passing interest in how the city works, or f---s. Quinn obviously travels in the District's social stratosphere, and her true-to-life details are the only reason to read this book, and the only reason that I will buy it in paperback. (Originally I bought it, guffawed, and mailed it to journalist friends living abroad.) Do I sound envious of Sally Quinn's success? Well, sure. I've lived in Washington for quite awhile but lack any interest, except vicarious, in the social ramble. As Satchel Paige used to say, "The social ramble ain't restful." And in the ham hands of Sally Quinn, it ain't restful either. Just as steamy and prurient as an unairconditioned summer night in Georgetown.

Book Description
PI Paul Craine is new on the job, just fired from his Washington counterspying job. He assumed that being a detective would be close to his former work. On his first case, he is asked to prove a lobbyist's infidelity. The alleged mistress, Pamela Johnson, cannot be found. She broke bail in Florida and has not been seen at her Arlington house. The woman who stands to lose her bail bond, Anna Sperry, is also tracking Pamela. Sperry and Craine reluctantly team up. But Pamela is abducted under their eyes. Enter a CIA agent who claims that the lobbyist is suspected of commercial espionage for an Airbus supplier. All the actors find themselves on Nantucket Island where the lobbyist has a vacation home. Of course nothing is what it seems. The story is told by Paul Craine, a Frenchman, who sees everything, from American ways to American girlfriends, with Gallic cynicism. The front and back covers are original paintings by the author. At the end of the book there is an excerpt from his western novel "Arizona '70".

Another French Connection.......2007-07-17
This is a spy novel of a different kind, with twists and turns and accelerating pace. The French connections are there too - the author is French, and the story has a French footing. It is a book worth reading and savoring. - Trebla
Great novel!.......2007-02-28
An excellent spy novel with suspense, romance, and unpredictable twists. The reader can quickly identify with Paul Craine- he seems like a real man with his share of unique habits and idiosyncracies; he is not a perfect, robot-like super spy. His personality and quick wit come right through as Frenchman living in Washington. It is easy to root for him as he navigates through his first case in the US. Regrets Only is a truly enjoyable reading experience that leaves you wanting to read about detective Craine's next assignment.

Bearing the Staff of Earth and the Harp of Winds, the Lady Aurian secretly returns to the holy city of Nexis--ten years in the future. Now its marbled towers are desolate, its river port ravaged, its magefolk a mere legend. Customer Reviews:
Well if you read this far may as well wrap it up........2005-11-25
This book, aside from not really providing closure, just wasn't very good. Aurian (1st in the series) was great...so was Harp of the winds for that matter. Sword of flame was so-so and so was this novel. This series started out with a bang but dwindled to sparks and smoke. I was surprised to see others say that this installment was too grim....I'd say it wasn't grim enough at all. Too many charachters brought back to life over and over again. I stopped caring if anyone died as either
A. They will cheat death (literally), ignore the call come back to life.
B. Eliseth will use the grail and restore them to life as her puppet.
C. They won't really be dead...that spark of life will remain and Aurian will heal them.
D. This is just another red herring and they only appear to be dead/dying.
I think my disapointment stems from the strong start this series had. Aurian was a great lead and several other lovable characters developed in the course of the story. I think perhaps Fury tried too hard to hold on to some of the characters and I think she intoduced to many irrelevant elements to the book (time travel, switching bodies). I actually found those plot devices to be distracting from the story.
Also the ending was ANTI-CLIMATIC! This was an adventure that spanned roughly 20 years and was hard won. However our two main advesaries are killed off rather easily. Makes one wonder how they lasted that long!
Anyway the first two books really are good, the real strenth in the series is characterization....you'll love the cast, it's fairly light fantasy and has some good romance. My advice: Read Aurian...if you love it then continue. It's never that good again but on the other hand it's never really terrible and you do get to spend some time with the cast!
dhiammara.......2005-01-07
I think, the story is good enough in detail and story lines that I really didn't believe that it would be the last in the series (even though the back cover clearly states In this fourth and final volume....). the conflict in the story in lady aurian when she lost her child and the lady who serectly return to the town knew where the child was . I like the book because it was touching. It taught me to listen to people who are in a higher ranking that you are.
What's next?.......2004-05-16
Overall, I enjoyed the series, but as other reviewers have stated, the last book also left me waiting for more. Unlike her other series based on the Shadowleague, in which she ties up loose ends, this one seems incomplete. The death of the mage Eliseth was anti-climatic, and what happened to Sara? Did I miss her demise? I feel that she left too many loose ends, especially regarding the children of all the main characters, the Phaerie, the great cats, and Nexis, endng the book as if the finale is still to come. Is there any chance that we will meet the characters again in a new series? After looking forward to the completion of the series, I was disappointed.
What next?.......2004-01-09
I loved this book, just like I loved the others but I totally agree with the other reviews. There were a lot of loose ends left at the end, like what happens in Nexis with D'arvan, Maya and the Phaerie, what became of the cats on Steelclaw, and what about Shia and Khanu? I really think Maggie should give us another book or two to wrap everything up. And a movie would be great!
A tad disappointing........2002-11-21
This is the fourth and final book in The Artefacts of Power tetralogy (following Aurian, Harp of Winds and The Sword of Flame).
After failing to make the terrible sacrifice that would have allowed her to claim the Sword of Flame, Aurian and some of her friends find themselves trapped in a time breach. They reappear some eight years later, only to discover nothing but chaos and destruction.
Indeed, not only did her failure release the evil-minded Phaerie who, wasting no time, immediately started ransacking Nexis and raping its inhabitants, sowing terror upon the city, but in the meantime Eliseth has also stolen the Cauldron of Rebirth from Miathan and is about to take the last steps that will finally allow her to quench her thirst for absolute power. Aurian has to stop her at any cost if she wants to save the world and the people she loves. Mustering her troops, she embarks on yet another journey to the Southern Kingdoms, towards the final confrontation.
Even though I was glad to read more about loveable characters such as Grince the young thief, Chiamh the Xandim Windeye or Shia the great cat, I was quite disappointed by Anvar's almost complete absence from this volume, for he was my favourite. The idea of time travel was quite unexpected too, and even though it was interesting to find out what Hargorn and Hebba, or Zanna, Dulsina and the Nightrunners had become in the eight years that had passed, this device didn't serve any other useful purpose and might have been more thouroughly explored, used to more enriching ends.
Although I can say I liked Dhiammara as a whole, I also found this volume somewhat messy and rather grim. Too many things happen and it seems that too many subplots have to be solved. And a fairly high number of people die in bloodshed too. Most of all, I found it was a tad insipid and lacked the suspenseful action of Harp of Winds or The Sword of Flame, and finally the end wasn't very spectacular either. Shame, it looked so promising...

Blind Traveler Down a Dark River.......2007-02-12
I totally enjoyed this book by Robert Bennett. This is the kind of story that keeps you wanting more. Mr. Bennett takes his reader to the future with its problems while giving insight into new technology that is fascinating. The author's main character, Douglas, was a man on a mission and, although he was blind, he did not allow this disability to get in the way of his decision to solve a crime. The book's character development was well definded. You were able to feel and understand Douglas Abledan's frustation and courage. I hope Mr. Bennett continues his writings and takes us on some more journeys with Douglas Abledan. Thanks for a great book.
Blind Man's Bluff.......2007-01-30
"Blind Traveler Down a Dark River" isn't your average game of Blind
Man1's Bluff. It's a detective thriller/mystery which pits a blind man turned detective into finding out who killed the CEO of Plaststeel Corporation. Although the police doubt that a blind man can witness a car accident, Douglas proves them wrong with hearing (navigational cane that works similar to sonar), deductive reasoning, and creative problem solving. Doulgas knows that his cane pitched to him the wrong sounds coming from a street and block of buildings that only exist in his mind. By using his fine tuned other sense, Douglas hunts down the person and/or organization that plots and calls the shots for questioned witnesses to be snuffed out. Douglas is on that list. Twist by twist, step by step, join Douglas as he struggles to understand the complexities of a murder mystery that only he can solve.
Watch out Ellery Queen! Step aside McMIllan and wife. Douglas is on
his game, and he won't quit until he forces the killer(s) to reveal
themselves and their heinous actions to the world! Four thumbs up.

Blindness in the Year 2021.......2006-10-05
What would it be like to be blinded as an adult?
If it happens in 2021, the technology for blind people will afford them a nearly normal life, at least that's how author Robert Bennett envisions the future. A social worker with a background in criminal justice, he has written a gripping murder mystery starring a blind man, who, with the help of his GPS navigation system, is able to investigate and track down a killer.
I thoroughly enjoyed this page-turner and wouldn't be a bit surprised if the technology described in the book comes to pass.

BLIND TRAVELLER DOWN A DARK RIVER
BY ROBERT P. BENNETT
This superb novel by Mr. Bennett is an interesting and exciting techno-thriller. Throw in mystery, intrigue and murder and the story will keep you pressing forward to the next page. You don't want to miss a single word. The plot will grab your mind from the very first chapter. The scene is the year 2021 in New York City. Douglas Abledan is a most unusual leading character. Although he is blind he more than makes up for the handicap by his expert knowledge of computers and a gift for being a good judge of human nature.
An advanced personal electronic device utilizing Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, assists Douglas in "Navigating" through his world of darkness. By coincidence the reclusive computer specialist becomes involved in the murder of a local corporate CEO. The folks at NYPD Blue presume that it was random drive-by shooting, but Douglas isn't so sure. He had lost his eyesight at the hands of such a shooter two years earlier. He feels a sense of empathy and even a responsibility to make sure that justice is done. Even though it may be putting his own life in danger, he presses into a personal investigation, which leads him through a maze of perilous situations. As he makes his own case (to the chagrin of the local police) he soon encounters a world of Industrial Espionage, Secret Government contracts, Hired Assassins and Environmental Extremists. It seems that a number of people may have had a motive to kill the head of Unimat Corp. As the investigation progresses, will the blind self proclaimed detective get in over his head, and thus become the next target?
The author has not only penned a great mystery, his ability to project it from the viewpoint of a blind person is most fascinating. The reader is literally taken inside the head of Douglas Abledan and your own head and heart will be pounding at the conclusion. It is a great read and not filled with crude vulgarity in the process!

I really enjoyed this book. .......2005-11-11
I really enjoyed this book. I often find that science fiction novels have characters that aren't very well developed: they fall short of "real" and I'm not moved to really care about them. This book really delivers. The best way I can describe it is that it is a unique blend of a great science fiction story and an old-fashioned detective novel. The added bonus is the characters are not one-dimensional: they are believable, interesting and diverse. I wonder what is next for Douglas Abledan?
