Book Description

In a dazzling act of literary license, the novelist and poet Jill Dawson has transformed the sensational true story of Britain's infamous condemned adulteress into a dramatic novel of passion, murder, and scandal, as seductive as it is shocking. One night in London in 1922, a clerk named Percy Thompson is stabbed to death as he walks home from the theater. The spectacular case that follows captures the imagination of an entire nation, as Percy's wife, Edith, and her young lover, Frederick Bywaters, are imprisoned, summarily tried, and hanged for murder, even as a petition to spare their lives receives more than one million signatures. Stylish, tantalizing, "with descriptions of the sex act from a woman's viewpoint [that] are both lyrical and sublime" (Daily Mail), FRED & EDIE is a hauntingly authentic portrait of a woman whose passio ultimately leads to her destruction. Reminiscent of both Lady Chatterley and Emma Bovary, Jill Dawson's Edie falls into the category of the unforgettable.

5 out of 5 stars A great true, historical novelý.......2003-10-04

I really enjoyed reading this true crime novel by Jill Dawson. I'm not normally into true crime, but this one was written so much like a novel that you almost forget that it isn't fiction. Plus the historical London setting always puts a nice, atmospheric spin on everything. I highly recommend this book.

Fred & Edie tells the true story of a man, Percy Thompson, who is killed after walking home from the theatre with his wife, Edie. Shortly thereafter, Edie and her lover, Fred Bywaters, are arrested for his murder. Most of the novel is made up of letters from Edie to Fred, written from her jail cell during the trial. However, the flashbacks of how Edie met Fred, as well as her tumultuous marriage to Percy, are what make this novel more than just a newspaper headline.

For fans of historical fiction, true crime, stories about scandalous affairs, and lovers of all things British - this novel is for you! It took a bit to get used to the letters/newsclipping writing style, but once it got rolling, I didn't want to put it down. I can't wait for what's next from a new favorite author, Jill Dawson.

3 out of 5 stars When loving is a crime........2001-12-26

This book is rather slow in the beginning, but worth it when one finally gets into it.

As a reader of modern times one cannot help but to compare today's standards to those of 80 years ago. Edie's husband is quite cruel to her. Whereas today there are so many ways for a woman to get out of a marriage like that, in those days, she was trapped. Even her family seems to turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to her husband's shortcomings, seeing only that she is a married woman, and therefore 'secure.'

The reader sees Edie become mature and insightful as the book moves along. In my opinion, however, there is not enough said about Fred, the reader never feels as though they 'know' him.

This story is haunting in the fact that it is true. One almost feels Edie's helplessness and hopelessness as she writes letters to Fred from prison, letters she knows he will never see. In todays American courts the appeals would have gone on for years and years.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2001-12-25

An artfully-written novel of what a British reviewer called a modern Madame Bovary, "Fred & Edie" is a compelling look at a crime that captivated England in the 1920s. As much a portrait of a changing era as a crime story, it is less about love than about dreams of love versus the harsh reality of a cruel, boorish husband. While at first Edith Thompson seems the "vain, silly" woman others thought her, the author beautifully develops and shows us her depth and longing until we are both transported and moved by her plight. Many images will linger long after the reader is finished.

4 out of 5 stars Victim or sinner?.......2001-11-10

Fred and Edie is based on the real life murder case of Frederick Bywaters and Edith Thompson who were hanged for the murder of Edie's husband Percy in 1920's England. Jill Dawson deftly blends factual material such as newspaper articles with fictional material in order to not only tell the tale of the lovers themselves, but to give the reader an insight into the lives of women during that era. How many women, like Edie, we wonder, married for stability and social conventions in order to find themselves trapped in loveless, violent marriages? Escape, appears to come for Edie in the shape of her sister's young boyfriend, Fred, with whom she has a passionate love affair. However, Percy refuses to grant her a divorce,a refusal that ultimately leads to the tragic deaths of all three of them.

Branded "silly and vain" at the start of the novel, we see Edie achieving emotional maturity and insight through a series of letters she writes to Fred from her prison cell. Issues of her culpability, sexuality and the role of women in this pre-feminist society are gradually revealed to us, leaving us wondering if she was a cold calculating killer or the victim of a society that denied her justice.

Merlinus has fostered the future king of Britain with Kyner, a Celtic chieftain, protected by obscurity from the jealous hatred of the sorceress Morgeu. As Arthor [sic] grows to manhood, though, he becomes a twisted creature, loving violence and hating himself. What kind of king will he be? A chance journey leading to woodland encounters shapes his character and settles his destiny.

Arthor's story is a single thread in a vast, complex web of gods, demons, angels, a sorceress, a unicorn, a carpenter with a wish, a dragon, Saxons, an impoverished Aquitanian lady with a secret weapon, battle-hardened Celtic chieftains and treacherous Roman nobles, knights, warring religions, and fairies. A. A. Attanasio's metaphysics, marvels, and magic will keep your interest and suspense high.

    Book Description

    Merlin's Beacon

Attanasio's The Dragon and the Unicorn began with the Dawn of Time. This equally ambitious and magical epic begins with the Dawn of History.

The demon Lailoken, Merlin to humankind, has groomed Pendragon's son, the eagle of Thor, to lead the doomed Celts against the Saxon, Pict, and Angle conquerors. In defeat will Arthor find his victory, and Camelot its triumph. Their light will shine across the ages, a beacon to humankind.

But Merlin is shocked to discover that his Eagle is a vicious, callow youth whose only joy is killing. With his Roman sword "Short-Life," Arthor will bathe Tintagel in blood, unless another sword offers itself to his gore-slick hand. A sword that must be pulled from the star-stone at Creation's radiant heart...

4 out of 5 stars The demon Lailoken.......2000-07-13

The eagle and the sword proved to be a very entertaining continuation of Mr. Attanasio's very literate version of the Arthurian legend; however, I must say that it did not fully live up to it's predecessor, the dragon and the unicorn. The book has less of the beautiful mysticism and focuses more on the life of Arthur (I suppose it is Arthurian legend after all). To me, the best ingredient in this book is the character of The Demon Lailoken, aka Myrddin, aka Merlinus, aka Merlin. The characters of Arthur, Morgeu the Fey, and The Furor are well thought out and vivid, but Merlin and Prince Bright Night(a prince of the Daoine Sid) steal the show. For me, the most fabulous section of the story was when Hannes (an unlikely apprentice of Merlin) enters the shadowy twilight world of the "hollow hills" to bring back Excalibur. The preternatural, eerie scene almost wails it's otherworldly ululation right off the page. Overall, the book is a very interesting read. I reccomend it (and the series) for anyone interested in Arthurian Legend that is tired of the same old, worn out stories endlessly circulating through the halls of bookstores everywhere. This is a fresh, creative and ingenious new take on the once and future King. Finally, I must say that the archaic and oft difficult to comprehend language of The Dragon and the Unicorn is not carried over to the Eagle and the Sword. This book is a bit easier to read, but just as entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars A Review of The Eagle and the Sword.......2000-03-25

Lailoken, a.k.a. Merlin, Aquila Regalis Thor, a.k.a. Arthor, and Morgue the Fey are the three main characters in the book. In this book, a demon-turn wizard in a human guise, creates the glorious kingdom of Camelot, while looking for a true king, despite complications by the powerful sorceress Morgue who seeks to avenge her father who had accidentally been killed by Merlin. However, as Arthor takes his title as king, Merlin discovers that Arthor is but a callow youth whose only joy is killing and destroying; can he be stopped? I was greatly entertained by this fantasy novel with all of its action and suspense. The way the author displayed the legendary events in Arthor's time was very detailed and vivid; it allowed the book to come to life. I could see and feel Merlin's long battles with Morgue. It felt like I had a front row seat as a spectator when Arthor pulled the sword Excaliber out from the giant stone! I also enjoyed how the author created distinct, unique, and bold personalities for each of the main characters in the story. What the characters wore was interesting because their attire had come to symbolize each of them: Merlin with his glamorous and magical robes, Arthor with his sharp and heavy suit of armor, and Morgue with her light and seemingly swift sheets, appearing and disappearing with the wind. I thought the characters were magnificently done. So, I would like to conclude my review of The Eagle and the Sword by congratulating the author, A.A. Attanasio, on doing a great job of compiling all of the widely known, as well as some not-so-well known, characters and events into one fabulous book. I highly recommened reading this book to anyone at or above the age of 12! I assure you that you will enjoy this book as much as I did!

1 out of 5 stars 'Eagle and the Sword' drags on and on and on.......1999-09-03

'The Eagle and the Sword' is an incredibly heavy-handed dull book. Attanasio uses a running narrative for the entire 340 pages, so that instead of feeling like a part of the action, the reader is treated to a history lesson. (Example: This happened, then this happened..and then this happened..That's the basic gist of it)

At several points I found myself wondering whether English is Attanasio's original language, or whether this book had been translated from another tongue. It's hard to believe that this is the same author responsible for the stunning Adam Lee 'Dominions of Irth' trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars The most entertaining book I have read in a long time.......1999-05-26

This book is a thousand times better than the mojority of others in the same genre. It was masterfully written, blending pure fantasy with the traditional Authorian legend. It painted vivid pictures and presented complex personalities. The most entertaining book I have read in a long time and the best Authorian based novel I've read since "The Once and Future King".

      Book Description

This is the story of two Infantry Divisions during the first weeks of the Normandy campaign. With battle cries of '29 - Let's Go!' and '3rd Division - Drive On!' the American 29th and British 3rd fought their way into OMAHA and SWORD beaches on D-day and then inland towards their respective objectives - the major communication centers of St. Lo and Caen.

After describing the agonies suffered by the Americans on 'Bloody OMAHA' and the difficulties experienced by the British in overcoming the concrete strong points sited in depth behind the SWORD beach, the author follows both Divisions as they tried to break through the German defenses. Their initial moves were quickly countered by a well trained and astute enemy - in the case of the Americans by infantry and paratroopers in the dense 'hedgerow country' covering the approaches to St. Lo, and in the British by the Panzers and Panzer-Grenadiers defending Caen in the open country to its north.

It was to take the GIs nearly six weeks to reach their objective, whilst the Tommies were forced into a concurrent holding operation that in many respects resembled the trench warfare hell of World War One. The main part of Caen was eventually captured by the British and Canadians on 9 July and St. Lo by the Americans nine days later. By then two Allied Divisions had suffered more than 10,000 casualties, several thousand French civilians had been killed and the previously beautiful cities turned to rubble in a series of devastating air attacks.

Throughout this vivid account of infantry combat, readers will be able to compare and contrast the leadership qualities of the various commanders and the tactics employed by the Americans, British and Germans; and they will surely marvel at the sheer courage of a generation that is rapidly passing away.

The 21st century was drawing to a close, and metapsychic humankind was poised at last to achieve Unity -- to be admitted into the group mind of the already unified alien races of the Galactic Milieu. But a growing corps of rebels was plotting to keep the people of Earth forever separate in the name of human individuality. And the rebels had a secret supporter: Fury, the insane metapsychic creatrue that would stop at nothing to claim humanity for itself. Fury's greatest enemy was the mutant genius Jack the Bodiless, whose power it craved. But Jack would never be a tool for Fury . . .
And so it turned to Dorothea Macdonald, a young woman who had spent a lifetime hiding her towering mindpowers from the best mind readers of the Milieu. But she could not hide them from Fury -- or from Jack. Time and again she rejected their advances, unwilling to be drawn into the maelstrom of galactic politics or megalomaniacal dreams. And in the end, no one -- not Jack, not Fury, not even the Galactic Milieu -- would be a match for the awesome powers of the girl who would come to be called Diamond Mask . . .

                  5 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-30

The being known as Fury is still at work, and an obvious target is Dorothea MacDonald, perhaps the most powerful operant human alive. She lives quietly on the Scots planet Caledonia. When whe tells Fury to get lost, the Milieu discover her as well, and when she enters the Metapsychi Institute, she meets Jack Remillard. They realise they are meant to be together, as Jack is the only other human with her power level.

A rebellion is brewing, and Caladonia is part of it. The rebels need more power, and Marc Remillard is someone they are interested in. It seems that the two brothers will be on opposite political sides.

                  3 out of 5 stars A typical middle volume.......2006-02-04

"Diamond Mask" follows the adventures of the alternatingly lucky and luckless Remiellards and their friends (human and otherwise), starting when Jack is a teenager and continuing to almost the start of the Metaphysic Rebellion. The main event in this volume is the introduction of Dorothea McDonald, who we first see as a child when her mother is murdered my Hydra. I will posit that the characterization in "Diamond Mask" is magnificent, as it is in any Julian May novel. Everybody is entirely real, rounded, and has motivations that make sense.

This is good, of course. However, once you have created a cast of worthy characters, the question becomes: what are you going to do with them? Truthfully, the answer here is: almost nothing. The first half of the book contains only one plot event. The second half is only a minor improvement. Everything moves at an achingly slow pace. Passages covering Dorothea's background and upbringing are particularly irritating, because often times they're not even focused on the character. We get pages and pages of mechanical details on how to harvest air plants on Caledonia. Exucse me, could we get back to the story, please?

Another issue is the forshadowing, of which there is far too much. For instance, the narrator informs us early on that Hydra does successfully carry out the murders in the Hebrides. Then seventy pages are spent building up to the grand murder scene ... but we already now what's going to happen! Perhaps the publishers demanded a trilogy when May only had enough material for a duology. But consider, "Jack the Bodiless" already gave us substantial information about two storylines: the Metaphysic Rebellion, and the struggle against Fury and Hydra. At the end of "Diamond Mask", the rebellion hasn't yet started and Fury is not yet defeated. In short, we've run through 434 pages and not gotten any closer to the goal line. The problem is not that the writing is bad (it's good) or that the individual scenes are decently engaging (they are), but rather that we're flying in a holding pattern while the real story doesn't advance at all.

5 out of 5 stars A focused and interesting continuation to a grand series........2004-02-26

Diamond Mask continues the Galactic Milieu trilogy which starts in Jack The Bodiless. If you have not read that book and the preceding series (The Saga Of The Pliocene Exile and Intervention) then you should not read this book. It is a well thought out and interesting book on its own, but it holds far more value when viewed in context with it's predecessors.

Diamond Mask is once again told as the recollections of Rogi Remillard, though for the most part this device dissolves into standard storytelling except when Rogi is directly involved. The book primarily focuses on Dorothea MacDonald (aka Diamond Mask). Her childhood, early life and her connection to the Remillard family through the entities Fury and Hydra (and later through Jack) are explored in this book. The development of her mental abilities and her major role in the Galactic Milieu takes center stage for most of the book. Fury and Hydra also become more of the focus of the book as Diamond Mask is heavily influenced by them in her childhood and in her later adult life.

Another focus of the book is Marc Remillard and his continuing development and increasing influence on the Galactic Milieu. This along with the growing rebellion against the Milieu is one of the main subplots to the book that get explored further in Magnificat, the third book in the series.

The characters are once again well thought out and though many years are skipped at times to move the story along it keeps us focused on important events instead of boring details. The pacing of the book is quick and the events revealed are momentous and it leaves you itching to get to the next book in the series.

This is everything a second book in a series should be. It is holds up well on its own, but it also neatly links up the preceding and following books in the series.

4 out of 5 stars A Diamond Whose Size Is Its Only Flaw.......2002-02-08

It was Julian May's novels of the Pliocene Exile that first introduced me to her concepts of metapsychic powers and the Galactic Milieu. I enjoyed them very much--but hesitated for some time before checking out any of the prequels of the Galactic Milieu Trilogy; I doubted they could be nearly as good as the others, lacking the hilarious antics of Aiken Drum. And now I must confess to being a convert! Aiken or no Aiken, _Diamond Mask_ and its predecessor won me over thoroughly.

Imagine it: in the not-too-distant future, humankind has learned that there really *is* life out there; moreover, that life down *here* is richer than was once thought. Psychic gifts have finally been recognized, and are being trained to their highest potential. New technology has made nearly everything we have today obsolete, and death has almost been conquered thanks to such miracles as genetic medicine and rejuvenation tanks. However, some things never change... and the tendency of mankind to get into messes is one of them. These ideas appeared in _Jack the Bodiless_, and continue to be brought to life by May's grand talent in this sequel.

_Diamond Mask_ doesn't only have an intriguing premise and fabulous writing; it is also possessed of a plotline that's deliciously chilling without being frightening enough to give one nightmares. The metapsychic monsters Fury and Hydra introduced in _Jack the Bodiless_ are still on the loose and as horrifying in their power--and their mystery--as ever, tangling now with entirely new characters. Enter Dorothea Macdonald, a lady as interesting in her own right as any Remillard... and another legend introduced the Saga of the Pliocene Exile. While I can't say the Blessed Illusio was quite as I imagined her, it was certainly a pleasure to learn her story. I look forward to its continuation in _Magnificat_.

If the book has a flaw, it's that it's too short: more information about Dorothea's early life would have been welcome; likewise, I wouldn't have minded a bit more insight into Jack and Marc's working relationship... or the lives of the various Remillards... or--well, all right, so it would have been nice to get more detail on any number of things. Still, _Diamond Mask_ is a delightful page-turner that I'd thoroughly recommend to series fans and those new to May's Milieu (though the latter may wish to read _Jack the Bodiless_ first) alike.

                  5 out of 5 stars Diamond Mask.......2001-02-28

This is a magnificent and intriguing publication. It is written with a magnificent sense of prose, and I literally devoured it in a few sittings. The journey of Dorathea Macdonald as develops into a paramount operent is filled with tragedies, loves, and denial. To be concise, its a great book!

4 out of 5 stars The Divine Sovereign Design of Suffering.......2007-07-18

Contrary to common views that suffering and injustice is a result of sins, which is not necessarily false, or the free will of man goes rampant beyond God's control, whose jargon is called opentheism, Prof. Sproul affirms the biblical view of the absolute sovereignty of God who has purposes; good, pleasing, holy purposes for his children in his design, not men's design, of every event that happens in their lives including suffering. Death for believers is a noble call to a glorious everlasting joy to be with God forever, something not to be dreaded for, but to look forward to with the certainty of faith, not in a suicidal sense, however, which is a selfish reason to end one's life, that Sproul also discusses in this book. Suffering and death seem to be the life theme, not only for the Apostles, as we read the Scripture texts, particularly in the book of Acts, or 2 Cor 1, for examples; but also for most Christians in the past, as we read texts like "Fox's Book of Martyrs", "Tortured of Christ" by Richard Wurmbrand; as well as for the present day saints, as we read the testimony of courageous brothers and sisters in Christ in hostile nations, available in the free monthly newsletters from the Voice of the Martyrs, for example. What is lacking in this book, in my view, is an elaborate treatment of Christian suffering for the sake of faith, missions and the defense of the biblical truth. Nevertheless, I still recommend this book for its God-centered view on the subject of suffering.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me tremendously.......2007-05-17

After someone whom I loved was stricken with terminal cancer, I was devasted. I am a Christian, yet the pain was so intense, prolonged, unrelenting that it eventually turned into clinical depression. I questioned God, His love, my faith..everything. I read several books to try and deal with everything, including many by renowned authors (both secular and Christian). This was THE ONE that made an impact and helped tremendously. I don't remember the details of the book as I became pretty incapaciatated. However, I do know this book helped so much that I am now giving it as a gift to a friend whose husband just passed away today.
If anyone is suffering so deeply that he is questioning his faith, this book will help. Sorry I can't provide more details.

This is a wonderful book! In a time when many destructive teachings abound regarding the suffering of Christians and life after death. Dr. Sproul addresses the same topics from a carefully biblical standpoint. I would highly recommend this book and any others by this author.
