A Nice Book.......2007-09-06
This is a quick read on a great subject. You can't help but see yourself in Dandelion at some point in the book, so in that way it's quite moving. It took me a while to buy/read it (and I'm a Mike Dooley fan), but I'm really glad I did.

Book Description
Academy award winning artist Doug Chiang and best-selling sci-fi author Orson Scott Card join forces for an extraordinary publishing adventure: Robota. An original illustrated science fiction novel, Robota follows the fortunes of a strangely powerful amnesiac named Caps as he navigates an ancient, decaying world in which a dwindling human population battles a society of merciless robot warriors. Aided by talking animals and stalked by terrifying hunter robots, Caps slowly rises to fulfill an awesome destiny. Integrating word and image, Card's masterful storytelling is interwoven with 75 pieces of Chiang's wildly imagined, meticulously rendered art. Packaged in a dramatic metallic case, this unusual and powerful collaboration is tailor-made to thrill.
Customer Reviews:
Mixed thoughts about book.......2007-08-14
For years I have followed with great anticipation the creative contributions that Mr. Chiang made to the Star Wars second trilogy. As a conceptual artist, he is one of the best out there. As a book illustrator he has a ways to go. I tend to agree with some of the other reviews in that the illustrations in this book look too much like Star Wars characters, especially the robots (and this book is all about robots!). I was hoping to see some fresh ideas, some new worlds, new characters, but unfortunately the illustrations for this book lack the imagination that Mr Chiang displayed while working for George Lucas. While the imagery is well executed, some of illustrations themselves seemed out of place with the story and some seem unfinished--As if Mr Chiang simply ran out of time or motivation....
As far as the writing of the book is concerned, I am not familiar with Mr. Card's other writings, but I found his writing style to be often abrupt, almost as if trying to rush to tell the story. Some key aspects of the story were not given enough time to develop, sometimes spending little more than a paragraph to transition important parts of the story. Lastly, the end of the story is, well, very disappointing in my opinion (I forced myself to read the whole book).
If you are a fan of conceptual art in general or of Mr. Chiang's artwork, you might find some of the imagery appealing, but beyond that the book is not worth the list price of $35. If you are curious about the book, buy a used copy.
A new Great SciFi.......2006-02-23
I cannot over state how good this book is. The art and story weave a great tale, in the class of Asimov, Anderson and so many other both past and present. The characters are real, the place not so far away. Highly recomended!!!!
This is a great book!.......2005-09-22
I want to create a work of literary art just like this. I truly enjoyed reading the story and having it intertwined with the original artwork.
Somewhat of a let down............2005-06-02
As far as the story goes it is somewhat simplistic and short. As for the artwork, well.... it is good but nothing that hasn't been seen before. Over all I think it's a good, albeit brief story, that is a good addition to any sci-fan's collection. I think I had just had a little higher expectation for this book.
I expected more..........2005-01-20
Dough Chiang is a great artist and conceptual illustrator, however the artwork in this book looks like concept designs intended for a movie pitch. All the characters resemble more or less those in the Star Wars movies, with very little original design. True that this maybe because Dough was also the one who gave the look to many robots and characters in the Star Wars
movies, but wouldn't it had been logical to create a whole different world for his Robota story? something that would seem fresh, new, never before seen, to spice up our interest in it? Concept art differs from book illustration art in that the first has to be dramatic, loud, sharp, and bright to quickly convey the idea, the design, or the concept. Illustration art -in a book like this one- should complement the story's mood, character emotions, and overall feel, like the soundtrack in an epic movie, which transports us , like a vessel, through the various emotional currents, from start to finish, leaving us feeling we were part of the story, after it has ended. Think Gladiator, The English Patient, Star Wars. This book looks like a compilation of unrelated concept art, with too many too bright colors, and compositions that seem too calculated, never a shadow or a blur, everything sharp, no place for the eye to rest a little, as if the artist wanted us to see everything he drew (concept art) in the same style, over and over.
Maybe having several artist contributing their styles would have made the book more interesting visually.
And the writing is sort of competing for space with the art. Maybe having more pages of continuous text between every page of art would have made it a better book.
It's not the kind of book I'd thought it would be.
Goes to show that you could be very good at one thing, like Dough is at concept art, and not in another, like creating an illustrated novel.

Product Description
"Since violent acts are a series of movements our bodies have learned to use to represent our inability to control emotions like anger; it follows that learning different movements to express or react to anger can prevent violence."--Disarming the Playground
Anger and violence in school and at home destroys trust and relationships. Disarming the Playground provides a movement-based curriculum of activities that promote non-violence and anger management in hopes of removing this unnecessary detriment to child development and welfare.
Based on the idea that physical action can healthily expresses emotion without harming others, the author encourages body-awareness and a deeper understanding of internal physical sensations, as well as social skills for coping with and diffusing violent situations. The activities included easily adapt to differing ages and developmental stages appropriate for pre-school through middle school. Lesson plans, step-by-step directions, discussion topics, and suggested props avail the curriculum to use by teachers and parents alike.

The sequel to N-SpacePlaygrounds of the Mind captures the startling range and variety of Larry Niven's spectacular career, from bestselling novels such as Lucifer's Hammer and The Ringworld Engineers, from his classic short stories of science fiction and fantasy, from his thought-provoking essays and non-fiction, from his innovative and seldom-seen work in comics (on such projects as The Green Lantern Bible), to an advance look at Larry Niven's upcoming projects.Like N-Space, Playgrounds of the Mind is a feast for Niven's millions of fans-and an impressive tribute to the man Arthur C. Clarke called his "favorite writer."
Customer Reviews:
Hard to believe Niven is now one of the Old-Timers . . ........2006-12-20
Niven is one of the best known and most successful hand-science sf authors of the 1970s and `80s, especially in his several collaborations with Jerry Pournelle. This is the second selected collection (sequel to _N-Space_) of his short works, essays, and excerpts from novels, and it's a useful introduction to the whole body of his work, from the "Known Space" series and the Draco Tavern tales to the semi-funny time travel stories featuring the reluctant Svetz and the mysteries of Gil "the ARM" Hamilton. I've read all of these before, though some not for many years, and most are enjoyable. I could have done without the novel excerpts, though; if you haven't already read the whole book, you'll have no idea what's going on.
A worthwhile collection of new and old material........2005-07-21
As with any collection of material both new and previously released the reader's satisfaction with this book will vary depending on their experience with the writer. For those not experienced with Niven this book in addition to N-Space will put you into the right frame of mind to explore the rest of Niven's Known Space.
In addition to Known Space, stories set in other Niven arenas such as the worlds of the Draco Tavern and The Magic Goes Away are included. I find these are some of Niven's best pieces of writing and they continue in good stead here. I did not realize until recently that Niven and Pournelle's The Burning City (and sequels) is set in the world of The Magic Goes Away.
I also enjoy Niven's anecdotes and tidbits about conventioning and collaborating with Pournelle and Barnes. I'm not a big drinker so his Irish coffee recipe doesn't do anything for me, but my wife will enjoy having something new to try out when we entertain.
Outside the norm, Niven's Green Lantern bible is an interesting read for a fan of the comic and another good reason to pick this up.
Though I skipped over a fair amount of the material in Playgrounds, having read it already in other books, I still find this a worthwhile addition to my Niven collection.
Good overview of Niven's work.......2003-12-23
This collection of Larry Niven's work is a good sampler and shows both what makes Niven good and what keeps him from being great.
Niven is a hard science fiction writer, interested in the possibilities of advanced technologies. Although he doesn't always adhere to the laws of physics (his Known Space works rely on hyperspatial travel), he does adhere to as much science as possible. His primary focus is on human-alien interactions and "interesting" worlds, with probably none more well-known than his Ringworld. Even in the featured fantasy stories, there is something of a scientific underpinning to his works.
Niven's ideas are often clever and he is a generally proficient writer, which makes his works overall good. On the other hand, he is not a "great" writer. I can't point to many specific examples, but there is something that is stylistically missing that prevents his work from getting to that higher level. Actually, my main gripe with his style seems to be his descriptive abilities; the concepts he tries to convey are sometimes described unclearly, leaving the reader with only a vague picture of what Niven is trying to show. In a hard science fiction writer - who relies on these scientific concepts as his bread-and-butter - this is a significant flaw. Fortunately, it doesn't happen enough to truly mar his overall work.
So even if Niven (and this collection) has its imperfections, it is generally good and a fun read. For Niven fans, or just those who want to see what type of writer he is, this is a recommended read.
Playing with Science Fiction.......2003-10-12
Major asteroid impacts, the horrors of a computer virus,
Dyson spheres around a solar system, Ringworlds -
was all classic science fiction before it
was science and before it entered mainstream culture.
And in this book we get a peek into the mind of one
of science fictions best.
Thats all great, but don't look for new Niven
worlds in this book. Nevertheless, it is an ok
read and a must for Niven fans.

The second half of "N-Space", from an SF master.......2003-02-15
There is not much to say here that I have not already said in my review of the paperback edition of "N-Space". Especially since "N-Space" and "Playgrounds Of The Mind" really are the first and second part of one, huge collection, I highly recommend that you pick up "N-Space" first, or better yet, buy both books, but be sure to read "N-Space" first.

Customer Reviews:
Totally Illuminating!.......2006-02-23
This is by far the best and most complete source on Atlantis in print. Steiner explains all, down to the obscurist details.
If anyone is interested in the mystery of Atlantis, Steiner is the best person to go to. It's like you're already there when reading!
I would forget about all the hokey, new age spiritualistic books out there on Atlantis and go straight to the man from headquarters!
