Book Description
Coping with Aging is the final project of the late Richard S. Lazarus, the man whose landmark book Emotion and Adaptation put the study of emotion in play in the field of psychology. In this volume, Lazarus examines the experience of aging from the standpoint of the individual, rather than as merely a collection of statistics and charts. This technique is in line with his long-standing belief that experiences should be looked at in their specific contexts, rather than squeezed into an overly general statistical viewpoint that loses the subjects' motivations. Drawing on his five decades of pioneering research, Lazarus looks at aging, emotion, and coping, and stability and change in both environment and personality. Because Lazarus mixes academic rigor with everyday examples, this volume will be both useful to scholars and accessible to the lay audience that has so much gain from a systematic understanding of aging and emotion.

In a small hospital room little Frankie Heywood lies in a coma so deep, no one -- not even those who love her the most -- can reach her. It is a parent's worst nightmare. For months the Heywoods have kept an uneasy vigil at their daughter's bedside, waiting in vain for the least sign of hope. Now the experts are telling them that prolonging Frankie's existence may be damaging to their son Ben, who is slipping deeper and deeper into a dangerous emotional isolation. Their marriage already strained to the breaking point, the Heywoods are desperate. For months the Heywoods have kept an uneasy vigil at their daughter's bedside, waiting in vain for the least sign of hope. There they watch helplessly as doctors come and go, unable to do anything for Frankie but keep her body functioning.
Now the experts are telling them that prolonging Frankie's existence may be damaging to their son Ben, who is slipping deeper and deeper into a dangerous emotional isolation. Their marriage already strained to the breaking point, the Heywoods are desperate as only a family can be. Customer Reviews:
intriguing.......2007-04-20
This story was a thrilling medical drama, filled with intriguing details of ethical issues and the limitless power of the human mind. Very different than my usual reading material, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Doesn't Live Up to Its Potential.......2002-08-06
This book had the potential to be a great emotional powerhouse. Here we have the Haywood family in total disarray: young Frankie is hit by a bus, Ben is wracked with guilt and denial, the father Jack has been kicked out of the house for having an affair and his airline business is tanking, and of course the mother Alison is caught up in the middle.
This potential drama is spoiled by Mawson's subpar writing. Of particular note is Mawson's uncanny ability to skip over the most intense moments. Instead, Mawson skips ahead, then backtracks through dialogue or a couple skimpy paragraphs. The ultimate example is at the end where at the end of Chapter 17, the kid is coming out of the coma, then the story skips ahead to weeks or months later. The whole story was building towards Frankie coming out of the coma (and I'm not spoiling anything for you, fair reader, since the book is titled the LAZARUS Child), and then Mawson glosses over the climax.
You can call it inexperience of a guy writing only his second novel, or if you're less generous, you would say it's purely lousy storytelling. Either way, Mawson's poor writing takes a potential 3 or 4 star book and drags it down to 2 stars.
The plot itself is pretty average and predictable, but the characters are fairly well developed. I did find Mawson's hypothesis of a neural network being able to bring people out of comas to be interesting. However, like everything else, it was poorly executed.
I would not recommend this book, but it certainly was not awful either. I can't say how much I paid for it, but it was low enough where I have absolutely no guilt about paying to read it. My advice is to check the bargain bin of your local book store (like I did) for this and if you got cash to throw away, go ahead.
I loved it.......2002-04-26
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen.
A Touching Family Novel.......2001-12-05
I read The Lazarus Child by Robert Mawson. It is a fiction novel about the strength and love of a family. I had mixed feelings about the book, but I enjoyed it for the most part.
I liked the overall story and the plot. I enjoyed the ending. I would say more about why, but that would give it away. All of the characters were well developed and I think the author wrote them all well.
There were only two things that I didn't like about this book. One of them was that the author goes overboard with the descriptions. He went into such detail in some places that I skipped ahead to the next paragraph. The other thing that I didn't like about the book was that it jumped around. Within a chapter the plot would move from Frankie's hospital room to Dr. Elizabeth Chase's childhood, and then to Jack's office. It was hard for me to keep up with the plot and what had happened in the previous chapter. It was especially hard if I put the book down for more than a day. It would have been a lot easier to keep up if I had the time and the patience to sit down and read the book in one sitting.
Despite the two low points of the book I would have to say that the overall story and the concept of the book outweighed the low points. I would also have to say that I would recommend this book to anyone who is in need of a good book to read, but to be prepared and have your thinking cap on.
It was ok until the end........2000-07-26
I was on the edge of my seat through the whole book, waiting to see how it ended. I waded my way through the dream chapters to see what happend at the end. The end was terrible, you are built up for a big climax that never comes and leaves you with so many unanswered questions. How far does Frankie come back? What happend to Ben, Lizzie, Janet......

For David Mack fans, not superhero fanboys.......2006-11-25
If you'd like to see Daredevil swinging through New York City beating up bad guys, this is not the comic for you. Although this is technically Volume 8 of the recent Daredevil run, it isn't exactly part of the regular continuity. The five issues that make up this volume were going to be a separate miniseries, but when Bendis and Maleev needed a break from Daredevil (after the Issue 50 battle with the Kingpin), the Echo mini was published under the Daredevil title instead.
This has led to an unfairly bad reputation for this beautifully painted, dream-like exploration of identity and willingness to fight for a cause. Daredevil subscribers expected more of the plot and action that had filled the series to that point, and this meditative break was frustrating, particularly considering the point that Bendis had halted the main plot.
If you are a fan of Alias (the comic) or Kabuki, this is for you. If you would like to gaze in awe at the poetic writing, beautiful painting and stunning mixed-media art of one of the most creative men in comics, buy this comic. You won't regret it.
Just to counter-balance the idiocy of "John Q. Public".......2005-10-15
This story was beautifully illustated by David Mack, as usual. The characters were all interesting and had depth. Bendis' writting, while occasionally wordy, is full of character. Definately worthy of a spot on your bookshelf.
!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-08
I am a faiithful reader of the new Volume 2 of Daredevil. This Series is mostly written and drawn by Bendis&Maleev. They are one of the greatest team up in recent comics. This book is a sadistic deviation from thier storyline and is writen and draw by David Mack. This is a (...) crap fest about a very minor character and her hippie like journey to discover her past. Her journey or vision quest given to her by an Indian shawman (yes she is a latino seeking out indian shawmen....yeah.....that makes alot of sense...) has her making encounters with Matt Murdock and big bad Wolverine. I must take time to not that Mack has the writing skills of a ten yearold that saw Xmen and Xmen2 and based Weopon X's background and life off aof a compacted role in 2 movies. Yes Mack uses the Logan from the movies not the comics. He then further expreses his impotency in the field by using chicken scatch drawings and paintings to move the story along with hardly ANY dialog. THis book is an artsy load of crap that should not be affiliated with Daredevil or Marvel. Go spend your money on Daredeivl 7:Hardcore. Its longer and has a real plot.
Disappointing.......2004-11-01
First I would like to state that my opinion may be biased. When this came out monthly, Bendis's run had temporarily ended on a cliffhanger; Daredevil had publicly beat up and defeated his nemisis the Kingpin, unmasked himself and declared himself the *new* Kingpin.
Then we got this.
David Mack, who is one of Bendis's best friends in the industry, did a guest stint with a character from his previous DD arc 'Parts of a Hole', Maya Lopez (AKA Echo) a deaf latino women who fell in love with Murdock after Karen Paige got killed.
I think if this had come out as a graphic novel, or as a seperate mini, I may have enjoyed it more. But imagine being engrossed in an intelligent, gritty fast-paced work and then being forcefed an elaborate, artsy character study on a relatively minor character.
The story has Maya Lopez returning to Hell's Kitchen after a lengthy absence to attempt to reconcile with Murdock, only to find the world turned upside down and Matt with a new girl, the blind Milla Donovan. So Maya goes off on a 'Vision Quest' to find a name for herself.
One thing that bugged me is Mack disrupting the 'finality' of Hardcore by bringing back Kingpin. Bendis's run ended with a shot of Kingpin unconscious, bloody and bruised with DD standing over him. This should have been his last scene for a long time. Yet he comes back in this arc. Which would be fine, as Kingpin was a fairly integral character in Parts of Hole and to Maya's character, but Mack establishes nothing. Kingpin goes "I still love you" and Maya leaves. Thats it. Her relationship with Fisk is a LOT more interesting than Maya giving monologues on herself. Maya started the chain which led Kingpin to his downfall, surely Fisk has something to say about that?
As stated before, the rest of the arc is pretty much Maya finding a place for herself. Mack's art is beautiful, if not abstract, but it gets boring when the story has nothing to say. Obviously elitists will go "Superhero fanboys can't handle true art" and that those who didn't like this just wanted to see DD punching people. Please. For the first half of Bendis's run DD rarely appeared in costume and it was only until 'Hardcore' that he fought anyone important. But it was still a gripping, intelligent read that was relevant to the character.
As I said before, this should have been a seperate mini or graphic novel. Instead we get the equivalent of a documentary on Van Gogh between Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2. Echo's a great character, and David Mack is a great writer, but this is not the place to look if you're a fan of them both.
David Mack's long awaited return to the Man Without Fear.......2004-05-19
Award winning painter David Mack made his long awaited return to Daredevil with Echo: Vision Quest; marking the return of the deaf Maya Lopez AKA Echo, who is attempting to reassemble what's left of her life as she goes on a Native American vision quest. Mack's story revolves around Echo, with DD playing a supporting role and Wolverine makes a surprising appearance to help Echo on her quest. Mack's storytelling is solid, but his superb paints are what the main attraction is here and help the story progress. The only problem with Vision Quest is Mack's superb art. As contradictory as that may sound, his art is and has always been an acquired taste; and that alone will either turn you off or sell you the book. All in all, if your a fan of Daredevil or David Mack, this is worth picking up.
Customer Reviews:
He completely changed the plotline . . . .......2007-07-01
It seems that I'm the only one on the planet who hated Ash Ock and Paratwa. Liege Killer is definately a groundbreaking novel. The problem occurs in that he completely changes the backstory (which was excellent) to a half-arsed alien novel, instead of a scientific breakthrough. This discontinuity is similar to the storyline changes between the movies Highlander and Highlander II.
I cannot recommend either Paratwa or Ash Ock, as they are very poor sequels to a fantastic novel.
Conclusion To Story Started in Ash Ock.......2005-02-09
Most of the reviews have explained some of the plot, so I won't rehash that. What I will try to do is explain why you should or shouldn't buy this, whether you'll like this or not.
First, if you're reading this review, you've probably read Liege-Killer (the first book) and continued on to Ash Ock (the second book). Even though Liege-Killer was a book that can stand on its own, and the story has a satisfying ending, the Ash Ock book is the 1st part of a 2 part story that ends in Paratwa. Ash Ock ends abruptly in the middle of a story and Paratwa continues right where Ash Ock ends and ends the 2 part story in a nice conclusion. So get both, or you'll be kicking yourself after you finish Ash Ock and you'll be wondering what happens in the next hour in the story.
Now the question is, are Ash Ock and Paratwa worth reading if you like Liege-Killer? The answer is a resounding yes. There's more of what made Liege-Killer a great read, with major events and conspiracies, whose resolution will change the fate of all the major characters and the fate of the human colonies. Almost all the major questions and secrets that were hinted at in Liege-Killer and Ash Ock are revealed, all the plot twists are untied and almost everything is explained in Paratwa. The major conflicts do come to their satisfying conclusion.
Unlike a lot of trilogies, this one doesn't disapoint, and doesn't leave you hanging. It's definitely worth reading to the end. Don't get off the roller coaster early, because the best part of the ride is near the end.
Enjoy the ride.
Absolutely Wonderful.......2002-07-12
This book is a great conclusion to the saga. The only problem is how rare it is. Even the paperback version is hard to find for a decent price. The saga is my favorite sci-fi saga, and The Paratwa really sums up everything. Liege-Killer was like a small puzzle within a larger one. Ash Ock and Paratwa allow the other pieces to slowly fall into place. When you're done reading the saga, you understand everything..yet at the same time, your head is still spinning from everything.
Where's the Ending.......2001-06-04
The book itself was a decent finally to the trilogy. The entire series is one of my favorites(so much in fact that I have read all three several times) However... I really would either have liked closure to the Gillian thing, or a continuation in perhaps another book
Crazy Ending.......2000-04-13
The series overall is one of the best I have read. This series has made a home in my permanent collection! This book stuggled a bit to wrap it all up but I do like how we finally got to see the "real" enemy.
Customer Reviews:
A Real Page Turner.......2005-02-09
I will not bore you with details of the plot since other reviewers have already have done an excellent job at that. The big questions are: Is this a good book? Will I like it? What's it's like? Let me try to answer those.
This book is definitely in the genre of a science fiction thriller in the best sense. The action and the plot flows very quickly, very significant events happen that will determine the fate of human colonies, and conspiracies within conspiracies are plotted, revealed, thwarted, and rehatched. The pages do turn very quickly and the plot never stalls.
The only downside is that the characterization is somewhat minimal. The book is plot driven and the characters are interested but they're mostly there as standins for concepts rather than people you might be passionate about. If that doesn't bother you and if you like action oriented, plot driven stories, this is truly a great read.
On another note, there are two sequels to this book, Ash Ock and Paratwa. The two sequels combined to make one story, so if you're going to buy Ash Ock, you should definitely get Paratwa also. Ash Ock ends right in the middle of the action and Paratwa continues right where Ash Ock left off. Will you like the sequels? If you liked Liege-Killer, you'll definitely like Ash Ock and Paratwa. There's more of what makes Liege-Killer a thrilling read - more conspiracies, more revelations, more events that may decide the fate of the human colonies.
I haven't had this much fun reading science fiction for a long while. I highly recommend the entire series.
A very good read.......2003-08-24
STORY: As one editorial review so nicely summariezed: "Two hundred years after Earth is devastated by nuclear war and genetically engineered Paratwa assassins, the humans of orbiting Earth colonies are at peace, until a series of murders reveal the reemergence of the Paratwa."
MY FEEDBACK:
1) SETTING - Prior to the destruction of all life on Earth, humans left for the stars. One group took off into spaceships headed for another solar system. The other group onto the colony capsule that orbits Earth. The later is where the story takes place. The colony capsule is 76 miles long, which is big enough to sustain different regions and groups. I had just come across a real-life group called the Lifeboat Foundation. Thus the setting seemed very plausible and real. It worked well for this story.
2) CHARACTERS - Our group of protagonists are likeable and plausible. Nick is my favorite character, but there is something to admire in each of them. The antagonists as gathered from the story description are a group of genetically created assassins. The Paratwa are very cool and deadly. The characters work well together in this story.
3) STORY - The only reason I gave this story a 4 star (very good read) vs. a 5 star (great read) is because of some of what I felt were long sections of exposition needed in order to explain man's history and how he go to this point in the future. Other than that, the story had plenty of intrigue, action and suspense. The author does give things away by page 122-125 out of 460+ page book. This worked for the most part because as characters came on stage there were two you kept looking for hints at to see which one was the "real" bad guy.
OVERALL: Fun read within a great sci-fi setting. It is not necessary to read the next book as this story resolved 95% of all plotlines. I've read that it the next two books are a bit of a let down anyhow. Nevertheless, get your hands on this book.
One of my favorite sci-fi novels!.......2002-09-24
My friend bought this book for me as a joke because I found the cover art to be amusing. I had read the synopsis on the back of the book, but never seriously thought about reading it until my friend bought it for me. Boy am I glad she did! The book was an genuine page-turner with twists and surprises around every bend. It follows a paratwa - an assassin that is composed of two bodies but one mind - and the paratawa's hunters and victims. In a relatively peaceful existence where everything (including the weather) is controlled by technology, the citizens are literally sheep for the taking as the paratwa reaks havoc. Two paratwa hunters are unfrozen from stasis and sent on the hunt... with technolgoy enabling anybody to alter their identity and the Ash Ock able to fill any position of power, everybody becomes a suspect!
Not only is the book a fascinating and well-crafted story, it brings the eery question to mind of how much technology is too much? And when, not if, will humanity become its own worse enemy?
Good start but the rest of the series dissappoints.......2002-04-19
This opening novel of a space opera sets up an interesting world and is based on an interesting idea. In this world earth is destroyed in a biological and nuculear war and humanity has moved to colonies in orbit. A deadly killer has been released by earths old enemies. Killers that are superhumans enties that have two bodies controled by the same mind.
This book introduces several interesting characters. More importanly the book gets the mood and setting right. The characters move around in style and the story flows well. This book is really a modern dime novel, with the privet eye replaced by a special ops expert.
Unfortuneatly as a trilogy this story fails rather badly. The second and third books do not work nearly as well as the first two. Only the main two characters are kept through all three books and they simply don't stand up the rigor of another seven hundred pages. It is never truly awful the more of this you read the less interesting it is. I can recomend this first novel as a good quick read, but don't feel bad if you don't get around to the sequals.
BEST SCI-FI EVER WRITTEN.......2001-09-16
This is easily my favorite book. The reader is introduced to a new kind of deadly assasain, one who can be in two places at once and kill with ten times the ferocity. My only wish is that a hollywood director reads this book and makes the film. Read this book. Excellent story line. Excellent plot. A joy to read.

More of What You Liked in Liege-Killer.......2005-02-09
Most of the reviews have explained some of the plot, so I won't rehash that. What I will try to do is explain why you should or shouldn't buy this, whether you'll like this or not.
First, you probably shouldn't buy or read this until you have read the first book in the series, Liege-Killer. The series is definitely in the genre of science fiction thrillers, where the action flows through quick and strong, the events really have major consequences, and major conspiracies are revealed. It's a great read.
If you like Liege-Killer, then will you like Ash Ock. It gives you more of what makes Liege-Killer a great read. If you thought the Paratwa and the Irryan Council had conspiracies up their sleave, there are more hidden agendas and conspiracies that are revealed and more struggles to fight, with even bigger stakes for the characters involved. If you didn't like Liege-Killer, then you'll probably not like Ash Ock either, since it's more of what's in Liege-Killer.
One word of warning. If you're going to buy and read Ash Ock, you'd better buy the third book in the series, Paratwa.

This is all plot, little action, simple intrigue, and introduces new characters. It then just stops, like the author ran out of paper or ink. This book is just a teaser for the next in the series. If I had known this, I would have waited for the next in the series and skipped this episode.

I'm not a big fan of inspirational books of quotes or sayings, so this is not a book I would have purchased on my own. I actually received this book from my church, and it does make for a nice gift. God's Little Instruction Book for Men is unusual in that it combines inspirational quotes with scriptural references. Thus you get the advice of individuals and the Biblical advice of God in one neat package. You won't find very many of the clichéd sayings you hear all the time; almost all of these were unfamiliar to me. They do offer sage advice for men on living a happy and truly successful life of virtue, integrity, and faith. In some cases, the personal quotation offers helpful insight into a Bible verse you may have heard many times in the past, and quite often the scriptural quote offers additional meaning to the inspirational saying accompanying it.
At 155 pages, this book can be read quickly, yet you can also pick it up any time you have a quiet moment or have a few minutes to kill. Even if you pick it up and only glance at it, you may well come across a quote or reference that will catch your attention and maybe even offer you a bit of advice you may not have known you even needed at the time. The only complaint I have of this little book is the fact that the sources of the personal quotations are not listed alongside the quotes. There is a list at the back of the book identifying the source of most of the quotes, but these are only referenced by page number. As for the Biblical quotes, they are taken from a number of different translations but are clearly identified.
