A gem for music lovers and advanced pianists.......2004-03-22
As always with Dover, a well made book that will last a very long time. This edition contains an enormous section of the Brahms piano repertoire. I would not recommend almost any of the pieces for the beginner/intermediate pianist, except for reading along with recordings. Less advanced pianists will fare better with the equally valuable Brahms Complete Shorter Works (It has a similar cover, only green).
This edition comes complete with reference notes and alternative notation wherever the record is questionable(rarely). The editor obviously did a very thorough and complete job with this gem. I was very happy with this book and recommend it to anyone looking for some of the longer and more difficult solo piano works of Brahms.

A FASCINATING GLIMPSE AT THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF MOZART . . ........2004-02-28

This is a very well done audio book, written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann who has done similar work on the lives of other famous composers. The book includes character readers who all do an excellent job of audio-acting Mozart and the people who played an important part in his life. Intermingled with the narrative are some fine examples of music from different stages of Mozart's life.
While listening, I did note a strange contradiction. Siepmann makes an observation at the beginning of CD 2 that Mozart's character has been 'mistakenly' maligned as that of an eternal child, someone likened to a buffoon of low moral continence - giddy and somewhat mindless. He then seemingly attempts to quash this notion, which he says has been promoted in stories handed down since Mozart's time and amplified more recently in depictions of the composer in various plays and movies. After methodically debunking these 'rumors' he then proceeds to give one account after another, including excerpts from Mozart's letters, that would seem, if anything, to support the view that Mozart did indeed go through episodes of extremely childish nonsensical behavior throughout his adult years. In retrospect, I think I see what Siepmann was trying to say, though it didn't come off quite right. He was pointing out that although these behaviors were present in Mozart's life, they shouldn't be taken to mean that the man was mentally lacking somehow in regards other than music and that it should never be considered that his music is not 'deeply thought out.' I would think all this could go without saying.
Siepmann also mentions early in the book, looking ahead to Mozart's marriage, that his wife was not considered as having been sympathetic toward his needs. When we do finally get to that point in the book, nothing more is mentioned of it - creating a deadend of sorts.
(These are actually very minor issues - I've given them more attention than necessary, but I wanted to give you some of my personal thoughts while reading. I found the book as a whole very informative and quite entertaining.)
The booklet provided with this audio book is among the very best I've ever seen. It's a small treasure trove of information including: 1) a CD table of contents; 2) a cast of its readers; 3) an in-depth historical background of the 18th century; 4) Mozart in his time; 5) His major works and their significance (including Kochel numbers); 6) a graded listening plan for his music; 7) recommended reading; 8) short biographies from major personalities in Mozart's life; 9) A Mozartian chronology - showing the year, Mozart's age, events in arts and culture, historical events and specific events from Mozart's life; and 10) a glossary. Need I say more?
Mozart was the greatest composer and musical talent of all time, a near universally held opinion. He truly was, as his father Leopold said, "The miracle that God sent to Salzburg." Indeed, not just Salzburg - but the entire world. I highly recommend this audio book and rate it 5 stars.

Bottom of the Barrel.......2007-09-26
Apart from the somewhat ammusing story where Oliver Queen's son join for a night on the town (a story in which Winick does showcase his gift for non-action stories involving social interaction between two male characters), this whole thing is rather mindless with Winick ripping off both Kevin Smith (the dome over the city created by a demon-summoning rich man = the dome over the Drover Brownstone created by a demon-summoning rich man) and himself (the demons here = the monsters in Straight Shooter). Go reread Quiver instead.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The first part is amusing, with Conner and Roy going out drinking, or not drinking, as the case may be, to the sort of places you would expect.
The major part details a large mystical problem must face, brought about by one of the city's own residents. Green Arrow and all the soldiers he can muster, whether cops, crooks or others must fight a battle to try and win back control versus a large number of otherworldly monsters.
Is Mia ready for such a confrontation? She thinks she is.
A Broken Arrow.......2006-07-29
Definitely not the best Green Arrow trade out there. Winick is a competent writer, but he has yet to hit it out of the ballpark. Of course, if you don't read a lot, you'll think he's the bee's knees, but he doesn't do much that's new.
This story has a villain that isn't exactly GA's standard rogue (he's Batman's guy), which makes the story interesting, but he's barely used. Talk about a wasted opportunity.
Pick up Kevin Smith's stuff or "The Longbow Hunters," as this is for completists only.
The lost of innocence.......2006-02-19
In this book we saw what when man's dream became the night mare for the rest of Star City and a babtism of fire for spoiler. It was very well done but left you with the feeling you wanted to pick up the next trade as soon as you were done reading this one.
City Walls.......2005-05-29
This collects Green Arrow issues 34-39 and picks up where Straight Shooter left off. It starts with a fun stand alone story about Conner & Roy having a guys night out. The 6 part City Walls storyline is some of Judd Winick's best superhero work. It features a nice take on the Riddler, a bit of social commentary, and an exciting full scale battle reminiscent of the Lord of The Rings films.

Nice book, action galore, terrible ending............2006-02-06
While I enjoyed this book along with the other five, especially the other five, it turned out to be pretty upsetting.
Dan went through a lot, I mean A LOT to attempt to get his family back and then most of the time, turns his back on literally anything, from kids in trouble to simple things he could have helped avoid. This in turns tells me that he is really selfish character after all. I in turn would at least help some people as I go in search of my family, as long as I could get it done quick, which he could have done.
Anyhow, the ending was not up to the hype the other five books were building it up to be. Some disturbing scenes that will leave a horrible taste in your mouth and with the ending so abrupt, like Robert wanted to just be done writing it, it will leave you scratching your head and feeling dumbfounded.
This made for a lousey feeling, like wasting my time with the other books. I would definitly recommend this book just because you have to see it through, but don't get your hopes up when it comes to the ending.

I must concur with the majority of reviewers. The book has an interesting premise, but enormous logical flaws, and often characters behaving in ways that seem "out of character".
Not very good science fiction.......2002-02-24
This seemed to have great promise; the face, pyramids, exploration but it all fell apart shortly into the story and turned into the typical government intervention and conspiracy book, with Mars as the minor story line...disappointing.

As a TREMENDOUS fan of Steele's "Space" series (Clarke County, Space; Lunar Descent; Orbital Decay), I had hoped for another wonderful, charmingly human yet extremely hard-science near-future sf read. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in all respects by this one. The aliens are remote and uninteresting, the characters are hollow (and this in a STEELE book?!), and the plot is insipid. If I had to make a comparison, this was a lot more reminiscent of Michael Crichton's truly bad efforts ("Sphere," for instance) than any of Steele's prior work

It worked for me.......2005-11-23
I've been in a weight loss program sponsored by my church for 13 months, and having great success during the sessions. But during the months between sessions, I was having less success until I found this book.
The book is organized as easy daily readings over a 12 week period, covering everything from the basics of nutrition and exercise to the emotional reasons so often behind overeating. It is useful both for losing weight at a sensible sustainable pace, and for keeping excess weight off permanently.
I've now read the book three times, and find newly-useful info each time I do. I recommend this book highly, either for individual or couple study, or for use as a small group discussion tool.
As of today I am 46 pounds down, and still losing at a very heathy and sustainable rate of about a pound a week. Part of the credit for that goes to this book.
