Book Description
Between the ninth and the thirteenth centuries, the Chola dynasty was the dominant cultural, artistic, religious, and political force in southern India. Though relatively unknown in the West, Chola bronzes are widely considered to be not only among the very finest works of Indian sculptural art, but the finest examples of bronze casting ever created. Among the exquisite examples here are the Hindu gods Shiva, Vishnu, and Ganesh, and a portrayal of Krishna dancing on the serpent Kaliyaone of only two in existence. This sumptuous book includes essays exploring how and why these objects came to be made, and the role they played within Hinduism and Chola culture.

Chola.......2005-11-20
A captivating novel where everyday life, drama and tragedy blend in a masterful narrative. Angelia, the protagonist, typifies a chola, a name designated for a young resident of the Mexican-American quarters, el barrio. She is trapped in a cultural triangle of old world Mexican customs, barrio street codes, and the rules and regulations of mainstream America. Impelled by perverse circumstances where rape is rampant, and a love/hate relationship with her mother Angelica is forced to make serious decisions no 18-year-girl should face. She tells her harrowing story from a jail cell where she is waiting to stand trial for the murder of her mother's ex-boyfriend. -- from book's back cover
I loved this book.......2005-09-30
This book gave me a lot of insight about a culture that I had little knowledge of. CHOLA took me on an exciting emotional journey. I hope Ms. Rios writes a sequel. If she does I'll be one of the first to buy it.
wonderful book.......2005-09-29
A riveting portrayal of life in the barrio. Once I began to read it I couldn't put it down.

Book Description
Winner of the 2003 Senior Book Prize from the American Ethnological Society.
Cholas and Pishtacos are two provocative characters from South American popular culture—a sensual mixed-race woman and a horrifying white killerwho show up in everything from horror stories and dirty jokes to romantic novels and travel posters. In this elegantly written book, these two figures become vehicles for an exploration of race, sex, and violence that pulls the reader into the vivid landscapes and lively cities of the Andes. Weismantel's theory of race and sex begins not with individual identity but with three forms of social and economic interaction: estrangement, exchange, and accumulation. She maps the barriers that separate white and Indian, male and female-barriers that exist not in order to prevent exchange, but rather to exacerbate its inequality.
Weismantel weaves together sources ranging from her own fieldwork and the words of potato sellers, hotel maids, and tourists to classic works by photographer Martin Chambi and novelist José María Arguedas. Cholas and Pishtacos is also an enjoyable and informative introduction to a relatively unknown region of the Americas.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful ethnography.......2002-04-25
The book as a whole is a wonderful ethnographic work. The author vividly paints the Latin American landscape so that the audience is right there with her. It shows a different side of the traditional ideas about Latin American women. It discusses the ideals of racism in Latin America as well as delves into the explaination of it.

Book Description
The Sensuous and the Sacred focuses on the exquisite temple bronzes produced during the Chola period, a time of unparalleled creativity in the history of the Indian subcontinent. By the beginning of the tenth century, Hindu devotees began to visualize their deities as having public personas not unlike those of human monarchs. Worshipped as living entities, the deities participated in a variety of daily, weekly, monthly, and annual rituals and festivities; to fulfill these functions, portable images were required. Thus were created the spectacular temple bronzes of south India.
For more than four hundred years, from the ninth to the thirteenth century, the Chola dynasty was the dominant cultural, artistic, religious, and political force in south India. During the golden age of Chola rule, music and dance, poetry and drama, philosophy and religious thought, and the arts of sculpture, bronze-casting, jewelry-making, painting, and architecture reached new heights. The temple was the center of all activity, and the Cholas built and decorated some of the most impressive temples in south India. These were primarily Hindu, though Buddhist and Jain shrines were also supported by Chola royalty.

When we first met Kelson (in Kurtz's debut novel, Deryni Rising), he was fourteen and about to ascend to the throne of Gwynedd, the medieval realm that never was, where a small minority of the populace, the Deryni, have magical abilities.
Many novels later, King Kelson--in whom the Deryni blood flows strong--has come fully into his power and it is time to marry and begin the serious business of begetting heirs. Aficionados of The Deryni Chronicles will know that marriage and Kelson don't mix: his first betrothed was murdered on their wedding day and his second was tricked into marrying another. Now the young heir of Torenth, a rival kingdom, is about to be crowned, and securing Kelson's succession has become a matter of urgency--and intrigue. Kelson's mother, his friends, his ex-fiancée, the mysterious Camberian Council, rival powers, and friendly allies all have their own candidates and agendas. With the future of Gwynedd at stake, Kelson has to learn to trust his enemies, use all his magic and might, and find a middle path between his duty as king and his feelings as a man. The king, like the author, succeeds admirably. --Luc Duplessis

Customer Reviews:
Was SO looking forward to this one, but...........2007-03-29
It's been a few years since I eagerly bought this book and read it, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I've been a devoted Kurtz fan since the early 80's when an Army buddy gave me a copy of Deryni Rising and told me to read it, I read the book in one night!
This book left much to be desired, not enough Morgan for my taste and seemsed so wishy washy.....not up to her usually high work standard!
I so wish she would go back and re-write this book, it just seemed so rushed and lacking the magic....FORGIVE ME KATHERINE!!!!
Trite.......2006-02-15
Trite, pretty much sums up my feelings for this book. Kelson's saga deserves better... I got the distinct impression the author is tired of her character and wanted to tie up loose ends and be done with him. Kelson is my favorite character in the Deryni universe and I will continue to revisit the earlier novels, but not "King Kelson's Bride".
Not a worthy sequel.......2004-06-30
Katherine Kurtz doesn't seem to have had her heart in the Deryni books for many years. This book, which was written and then "left hanging" (sans sequel), seems to prove it. Compared to the subtle plot twists, action, and adventure of earlier books, the plot is fascile and the pace is slow.
Fans of the Deryni books will probably read this volume anyway, eager for anything new on the topic. They will then endure a recap of events they vaguely remember from books read over a decade ago. Following this, all the characters talk and talk about who King Kelson will marry. Then they talk about talking about it. After the inevitable "surprise Deryni ancestry" revelations, the usual pack of fanatics and evil Deryni will try and thwart the wedding and will be defeated. Then King Kelson will marry the woman who was discussed and discussed.
I was so excited that I decided not to wait another long span of years for another volume and gave up on KK after 30 years!
Eager to see where this takes us..........2003-10-02
I've been a big fan of Ms. Kurtz' work since I was 13, when I picked up a copy of 'Deryni Archives', the short stories that go along with the whole Deryni Universe. I then had to go back and read the actual books that the 'Archives' stories fit between, and it was a joy and pleasure. I reread 'The Quest for St. Camber' at least once a year; it's my most favorite!
Like the rest of her fans, I've suffered through the loss of many a good man or woman in the series, and hung on the edge of my seat when danger was afoot in the land of Gwynnedd. I was very happy to pick up this book after so long! However, if I could give it two sets of ratings--one for being yet another wonderful glimpse into this universe that's dear to my heart, and another for not quite being the satisfying read the others were--then I would.
I count Ms. Kurtz among the people who inspire me most (I'm an aspiring author myself), and it was lovely to finally have Kelson get something he wanted, rather than watch it slip out of his grasp yet again (how many times can we torture the poor guy?), but the dynastic twists of the Haldane family and the equally befuddling House of Torenth bogged it way down for me. I liked seeing Liam come into his own (like a certain young Haldane at his age!), but I'm really looking forward to learning more about Queen Araxie. Maybe Rothana will finally find some peace, too.
I understand that Kelson may not fall deeply in love with his Queen--kings and queens do not necessarily marry for love, you know--so I wasn't surprised that he is merely content with his bride, and is willing to learn to love her. Although, with the exception of Nigel and Meraude and Alaric and Richenda, bad things seem to happen to the couples who love deeply (witness Maryse and Duncan, Kevin and Bronwyn, Rhys and Evaine, Rhys Michael and Michaela, etc.)
It's true; I was waiting for the moment I threw down the book and mourned for a favorite character, but it never came. It all seemed very nervous, however--that's the tone of this book, nervous. Nervous at the Torenthi situation, nervousness at the selecting and wooing of Kelson's bride.
I know we all wished for Kelson to find happiness. Just goes to show you: be careful what you wish for--you just might get it!
Did David Eddings write this for her?.......2003-09-25
Always good to have another Deryni book, however, after just having read the Heirs of Saint Camber Series, I can't help but wonder if Katherine Kurtz is getting soft in her slightly older age. In all the other series, it seems as though Mrs. Kurtz goes out of her way to make sure that freakishly bad things happen quite haphazardly, and often, to our heroes any time things are going well (just look at the last thirty pages of Camber the Heretic). But now she seems to have fallen in love with Kelson and decided that he deserved a break or two; she allows him to sail through all challenges with Eddingesqe ease. The only real danger in the book is easily thwarted, although this allows for the most satisfying part of the book (see below).
Funnily, there isn't much bride in King Kelson's Bride, and the only wedding is not Kelson's. Morgan and crew are mostly absent from the book, and three years later, Kelson hasn't investigated the Camberian artifacts. However, tantalizingly, we begin to see some hint of the "True" Camberian Council that is described at the end of the Camber series and that not perhaps less was lost than is commonly thought, and all is forgiven. I hope that we see more of that developed in the coming books. I've certainly been waiting long enough.

An outstanding series.......2007-08-23
Bleeding in the Eye of a Brainstorm is the thirteenth installment in George Chesbro's genre bending mystery series featuring Mongo, the dwarf detective. On Thanksgiving Day, Mongo finds a woman sitting on his doorstep. She identifies herself as Margaret Dutton, but he does not recognize the polite, neatly dressed woman. Suddenly, Mongo realizes who she is--Mama Spit, a deranged baglady famous in his neighborhood for spitting at anyone who came near the steam grate she called home. Mongo, stunned by the radical change in her personality, soon discovers her turnaround is attributable to the yellow and black capsules Margaret takes daily. She claims the capsules were given to her by a mysterious stranger shortly before she saw him murdered. The capsules tamed her madness, and heightened her sense of taste and smell.
Mongo's investigation into Margaret's situation eventually leads him to focus on Rivercliff, a mental institution where the CIA conducted unlawful pharmacological experiments on human subjects. One victim of these experiments, a killer named Raymond Rogers, escaped after killing several doctors and setting the institution ablaze. The turmoil Rogers created also enabled twelve other inmates to escape. All are addicted to the drug Margaret takes, which is in very limited supply. Withdrawal is not an option--if they fail to take a dose every twenty four hours they will perish. Mongo fences with the NYPD, battles assassins, and races against time to save the lives of the former mental patients.
Bleeding in the Eye of a Brainstorm is downright sedate compared to other entries in the series, but still showcases the attributes which make Chesbro's work so outstanding: adventure, intrigue, suspense, great characters and writing. Chesbro fuses many genres in his Mongo stories--elements of mystery, science fiction, fantasy, horror, suspense, political intrigue and espionage abound. Mongo has encountered ESPers, serial killers, ninjas, and mad scientists trying to take over the world. Anything can happen in a Mongo novel, and it usually does. The Beasts of Valhalla is probably the best book in the series, but all are enjoyable. Read one and you'll want to read them all.
Mongo novel #13: how many shopping days till Christmas?.......2005-06-13
Mongo, alone in New York from Thanksgiving to New Year's while his immediate family members are on various extended trips outside the US, encounters two anomalies on Thanksgiving eve: a chess hustler from the park haunting the halls of the Manhattan Chess Club with a new apprentice, and a schizophrenic woman living near his office who calls on him for help - an "offer" he can hardly refuse, with an ice-pick killer roaming the city.
All three - the budding chess master Michael Stout, the suddenly coherent Margaret Dutton, and the terrifying "Dr Death" - are more than they appear to be. Mongo soon discovers that somebody in upstate New York has been running illegal experiments with anti-schizophrenic medication on human subjects at an institution called Rivercliff, and all three of his new responsibilities are former inmates. The nameless new drug all three patients - and nearly a dozen other escapees hiding in New York City - has severe side effects: the patients are physically dependent on the drug, can't quit cold turkey without risk of dying, and have at most enough supplies to survive until Christmas.
To make matters interesting (as if "Dr Death" on the loose weren't enough), not only is there a certain risk of male patients on the drug suddenly becoming violently psychotic, but those formerly running the experiment have sent assassins after the only people who could possibly testify against them.
Nice little race against time here: trace or otherwise supply substantial amounts of an experimental drug without the name of the manufacturer, where the manufacturer is motivated to lie about it, where there's a risk of some of the patients turning into serial killers on the medication but a certainty that they'll all die without it.
Lippitt, Chant, and Insolers don't appear, although at least one of them really should, and it's never explained why Mongo doesn't think of contacting Insolers and asking for help. Veil has a minor supporting role. Garth, Harper, and Mary Tree are out of the country and the story for most of the book.
Drive in totals:
- Lots of dead bodies.
- Some sexual content (serial killer with urges).
- Torture (electricity).
- Nice touch: patients who don't become violent always seem to develop some wild talent, such as Stout's ability to play chess, although the talent may not be identified unless circumstances are favourable (such as access to a chess set).
- Conspiracy theories.
- Evil corporate bad guys.
- Mad scientist fu.

Though I am a Christian, not Muslim, I read the Qur'an also to see for myself what it teaches rather than hear secondhand. This Qur'an was given me by someone from the local mosque and from what I read in numerous Islamic websites/books, it is a respected translation among Muslims. Though A. Yusuf Ali does have a Qur'an that also includes a commentary, this one does not, but instead has 3 main features: English text, Arabic text (in Arabic writing), and the transliteration (i.e., spelling out the sound of the Arabic by using English, 'Roman,' letters). (Tip for the nonMuslim who's trying to understand the order/organization of the Qur'an: the suras are organized by length, longest to shortest.)
