Book Description
This is a unique and remarkable collection: the Beatitudes have never been staged for the camera before. Rousseau transforms them into photographic paintings or painted photos. Stunning. An unforgettable journey of discovery.

unexpectedly love it.......2007-03-30
Compared to A.F.'s books, this guide to men's clothing is not very useful unless you have a lot of money. However, the photos and anecdotal information are great, and it is a fun book to browse. If you enjoy men's clothing, you won't regret owning it.
Excellent........2006-05-30
This is a lifestyle guide, which is sophisticated. Not at all like the Machiavelli Suit book where complicated writing styles and dodgy advice overtakes the look.
The author helps you nurture a look.
One of the Classic Essentials that Every Man Should Have.......2006-04-25
This book is widely regarded as something of a classic - and for good reason. It has been translated into no less than 17 languages. Of all books on the subject it is the most encyclopaedic in thoroughly covering everything from shaving, to suits, to sportswear, knitwear, dressing gowns and much more. The whole book is crammed with succinctly presented information from start to finish that it becomes a perfect reference book to keep on the shelf.
For many people the question will be whether to choose this or Allan Flusser's 'Dressing the Man'. The answer is really that they serve different purposes. If you quickly want to know how to look your best for a job interview in a suit then go for Flusser, as his book best explains suits in greater detail, and better still, tells you how to coordinate it with the shirt and tie. Roetzel tends to be more segmented and tells you less about how to coordinate the different items.
However, Roetzel great strength is that he has countless little tips jam-packed into his book that Flusser never touches on. One point at which Roetzel thoroughly surpasses Flusser is in his section on shoes, which is by far and away superior. The plethora of full colour photographs of different shoe types and on what occassion they should be worn has superior clarity to the brief and poorly illustrated overview dealt the topic by Flusser. Other places that Roetzel surpasses Flusser is his discussion on items such as sport coats, overcoats, socks, as well as with extremely useful tips such as how to fold a suit jacket when travelling, and even the best way to iron a shirt.
One point worth mentioning is that the book is orientated towards an English ideal of what a 'gentleman' is. However, the book was originally written in German and also gives a good continental perspective on how the French, German and Italians have adopted English fashion. Of course the likes of Ralph Lauren and Alan Flusser still strive to recreate the classical English look to the point that these Americans strive for an ideal more English than the English themselves. What you will read here is therefore perfectly adaptable to New England in the United States and unless you are a Southerner in your seersucker or linen suit there will be precious little that fails to translate into an American setting. Also Ivy League looks do get a bit of mention even if it presents an idealized and nostalic Ivy League look of yesteryear more American than Americans.
Gentleman: A timeless fashion.......2004-08-30
This is by far the best book I ever read about male fashion. It is true that it dwells almost exclusively on British tailors and shoemakers, but the truth of the matter is that they are simply the best. If you can afford a shirt from Pink or turnbull and asser, or pair of shoes from Church's or alfred sargent, you will be catapulted to the circle of the exclusive. I strongly recommend this book to every gentleman seriosuly interested in improving his wardrobe and image, with no hesitation.
One of Two Definitive Books on Menýs Style.......2004-06-16
As a web developer, I have recently had a run of men's custom tailoring customers. I found myself looking for an encyclopedic source of styling details and fashion fundamentals.
This book by Bernhard Roetzel's provided many of the answers. It is a trove of the tried and trusted classics of men's clothing. In one volume one can find advice on combining familiar patterns, materials, fabrics and colors. Unlike the other book I consulted - Dressing the Man by Alan Flusser - breaks down the details and elements of Italian, English and American styling.
To be sure, there are topics I could have done without - underwear, jewelry, umbrellas, walking canes, tobacco and pajamas, to name a few. However, if you are looking for detailed information about men's style, this is one of two books to consult.

After reviewing another book with a similar title and cover, I noticed that this one is different, and Amazon says I should review this one. I don't have it, but just, when you are ordering, look at both books.

Very Good Guide.......2006-04-22
There is a great deal of information packed into this volume. There are sections on both grooming and clothing, and the history and evolution of gentlemen's wardrobe and grooming are quite interesting.
There are only two drawbacks: 1. A directory of the best stores and services to accompany the product recommendations would have been bery helpful. 2. The author seems to write primarily for English gentlemen (not a bad thing, but Americans might find some of the customs and suggestions are not appropriate for them).
All in all, though, a good book that is worth the read.
This is the book I've been looking for..........2005-10-23
The selection of quality men's fasion books generally leaves something to be desired. I looked for quite some time, and picked up a couple books at the local library. I came across this book one day by chance at a Barnes and Noble, in the bargain section no less! This was exactly the book I was trying to find. Classic men's fasion, grooming, lifestyle tidbits, it's all there.
An excellent primer for men's fashion.......2004-07-11
Mr. Roetzel's book is an excellent place to start for those who want to learn the basics of men's fashion - and to move beyond. To roughly paraphrase its author: before one can "push the envelope" in terms of style, one must first understand what the social conventions are. This book can provide one with the foundational understanding of conventional modes of dress. Once armed with this basic understanding, one can adjust the norms to suit one's personal tastes or move beyond even this lofty goal to set the trend among friends and acquaintances.
This book covers the major aspects of choosing clothing by identifying well-known (quality) brands and famous clothiers. Although the author's tastes are markedly Anglo-centric, there's nothing wrong with this. After all, if you're reading this review, you have the means to order many of the manufactured items he recommends. Additionally, the author explains how to identify quality in case you are adventurous (and tasteful) enough to explore new brands. The true gentleman recognizes the utility of brand identification in selecting goods known for their quality, but his devotion is never slavish. This book will help you understand what makes a brand memorable.
Aside from fashion, the book covers many aspects of lifestyle, including the appreciation of smoking, spirits and shaving.
If not for the difficulty in finding it, I might recommend this book to every young man as a coming of age gift, as well as for those who manifest an interest in taste rather later in life. For those who have already developed a sensible style, the book may be consulted either to check one's instincts or to find something new along similar lines. This book expressed ideas very similar to my own (tobacco being the exception) and was thus useful - because I approve of the author's taste, I have no doubt that his authority can be a trusted aid in exploring new brands and styles.
This book can be difficult to find, but if its available, buy it.

Some consider this comic book novel obtuse; others find it deeply intellectual. Whatever the reaction, it's hard to refute its daring originality and smooth artwork. Described as "a terrifying journey into madness," the story revolves around Clay Loudermilk as he stumbles upon the mysteries behind a snuff film. Soon he's involved with increasingly bizarre characters who hang in the air like stale cigarette smoke. Fans of movie director David Lynch who aren't already tipped to Daniel Clowes's popular work should take note.
Book Description
Daniel Clowes's first book remains a modern classic 15 years after its debut in Eightball #1, the comic book title that made Clowes a household name in comics circles. This surreal graphic novel is couched within a noir-ish detective structure and rich with recurring psychosexual motifs and imagery. The story follows a deadpan Candide named Clay Loudermilk, on a search for a former lover through a landscape that several critics have favorably compared to the works of David Lynch, Fellini, and Luis Buñuel, with elements of Dragnet and Russ Meyer films added for good measure. Clowes rigorously employs a dream logic as Clay spirals down a spare, unsettling wasteland, meeting three-eyed prostitutes, mutant waitresses, angry men with hair plugs, and orifice-less dogs with secret messages tattooed on their skin. As Clay attempts to untangle the vast conspiracy he finds himself a part of, Velvet Glove becomes a vivid and fantastic examination of futility, self-loathing and paranoia, and a masterpiece of postmodern fairy-telling,
Like A Velvet Glove returns in 2005 as Clowes and film director Terry Zwigoff put the finishing touches on Art School Confidential, the follow-up to their 2001 Academy Award-nominated film, Ghost World (based on the bestselling comic book of the same name). To be released in the late summer of 2005, Art School Confidential is sure to introduce an entirely new audience to Clowes's work, just as the Ghost World film did (pushing sales of the Ghost World graphic novel over 150,000 to date).

Lost in dream.......2007-10-01
I am a fairly recent Clowes fan (I've been reading for a couple years...started with Ice Haven). And as with most work I love, I tend to pleasure-delay other works by the artist. That said, I read David Boring at the beginning of the year, and just picked up and went through Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron.
Where David Boring and Ice Haven definitely seemed to cohere with some, albeit demented, climax at points, this book is a veritable pandora's box of narrative. The thing is all over the place, and there are plenty of characters that show up and then disappear forever, before you even get a chance to figure out their purpose.
In that way, it definitely holds the stuff of dreams, and meanders in completely unexpected ways. It's a total mind trip with a strangely comforting ending... comforting in that it finally seems to decode some of what Clowes set up throughout the book... it's hard to explain, just check it out.
Dark, weird, and great........2007-09-21
I may be biased, being a big Clowes fan, but I thought this book was great. If you read David Boring or a strip Clowes did called "The Gold Mommy" (I think), and you liked that sense of pervasive nightmarish unease that Clowes is so good at creating, then you will like this book. If you are not into creepy, dark, or bizarre themes, you may want to move along.
disturbing.......2005-11-13
Okay, this book was really hard for me to track down. I ordered it on amazon last year and it was out of stock and never shipped for months, so eventually I cancelled it. I finally got it not long ago from a comic shop.
I read the other reviews and I see what people mean. At first, I was confused. Then when I realized it was supposed to be bizarre and not make sense, I got into it. I liked it. The biggest complaint people seem to have is that it's not like "David Boring." I love his other books, and this one was good, but it is very different. It's very surreal and disturbing.
Seriously. I was extremely disturbed by some of the characters. My boyfriend asked me how it was and all I could say was "unsettling" and "bothersome" because it just makes you feel uncomfortable.
So yeah...be warned.
Frustrating........2005-09-01
I was a fan of Ghost World and David Boring. Daniel Clowes has a knack for putting real people in a world where everything is a bit askew. This book is older than the others and reviews lead me to believe it would be a bit more insane than the other books, but I had no idea...
We follow our rather dry hero, Clay, on a bizarre odyssey as he searches for his long lost lover after recognizing her in an obscene film. Typical Clowes' formula, but Clay's path is littered with feminist warmongers, dogs with no orifices, an admirer that strongly resembles a giant potato-fish hybrid, and some of the freakiest character designs you will ever see.
The problem is the mystery, the tension, the weirdness just builds and builds and builds and there seems to be so little relief from it. The payoff just isn't satisfying. The book gave me a headache. If you enjoy Clowes' art style, there's plenty to look at here, but story-wise, it was quite disappointing. If you're new to Daniel Clowes, I suggest trying his more accessible works first.
A failed attempt.......2005-04-22
A first glance I found this work to be engrossing, but the farther I got into the book the less sense it made. It reminded me of Charles Burns in its oddness, but then became too random and seemed more like Dada then surealism. I felt there could have been more of a tying together of the plotlines presented instead of the montage ending that left me a little more then unsatisfied. It gave a feel of "I'm tired of writting this" .
The charactors were flat compared to most of Clowes work, in truth I could not get a feel for anyone in the story. Nor did I see the big picture(if there was even one) that was presented because too little information was provided. And the any provided came across as nonsensical. It seemed like just another collection of pulp alternative work from that time. Shock value pulp at that.
I had hoped for better from one of the masters of modern comics.

I wish I could of seen these cards before I purchased them. They are all themed towards your significant other and there are four different designs and several of each design...I only have one person to give these to, so I will be passing the others on to someone else. I had expected that maybe they would of put more general ones like Love is a great pair of shoes or something like that. These are nicely printed and come in a sturdy box.
