First, a bit of history: The seventh Earl of Lucan disappeared on November 7, 1974, leaving behind the battered body of his children's nanny and a beaten wife. Widely covered in the press, his sensational story has had a surprisingly long half-life, and the speculation about his whereabouts has never quite died out. In this book, Muriel Spark toys with several provocative issues arising out of the case: identity, class, blood ("it is not purifying, it is sticky"), and the dynamics of psychiatry ("most of the money wasted on psychoanalysis goes on time spent unraveling the lies of the patient").
Aiding and Abetting opens sometime late in the 20th century, when an Englishman in his 60s walks into the Paris practice of famed Bavarian psychiatrist Dr Hildegard Wolf and announces that he is the missing Lord Lucan. Yet Hildegrad is already treating one self-confessed Lord Lucan. And what's more, both patients seem to have dirt on her--for isn't she really Beate Pappenheim, a notorious fraud who used her menstrual blood to fake her stigmata? Fearing for her safety, Hildegard flees to London, where her path inevitably crosses that of two British Lucan hunters.
Aiding and Abetting contains more than its share of broad farce and bitter irony. But it remains a strange, slight affair, its unspoken tenet being that the Lucan case still preys on the communal mind of the British public, its details (like the perpetrator's penchant for smoked salmon and lamb chops) indelibly printed there. For anyone under 30, that's a difficult argument to swallow. As one wise character puts it: "Few people today would take Lucan and his pretensions seriously, as they rather tended to do in the 70s." Times have changed indeed--and perhaps that's Spark's point after all, that the "psychological paralysis" of the not-quite-swinging '70s is long gone. --Alan Stewart
Book Description
In
Aiding and Abetting, the doyenne of literary satire has written a wickedly amusing and subversive novel around the true-crime case of one of England’s most notorious uppercrust scoundrels and the “aiders and abetters” who kept him on the loose.
When Lord Lucan walks into psychiatrist Hildegard Wolf’s Paris office, there is one problem: she already has a patient who says he’s Lucan, the fugitive murderer who bludgeoned his children’s nanny in a botched attempt to kill his wife. As Dr. Wolf sets about deciding which of her patients, if either, is the real Lucan, she finds herself in a fierce battle of wills and an exciting chase across Europe. For someone is deceiving someone, and it may be the good doctor, who, despite her unorthodox therapeutic method (she talks mainly about her own life), has a sinister past, too.
Exhibiting Muriel Spark’s boundless imagination and biting wit,
Aiding and Abetting is a brisk, clever, and deliciously entertaining tale by one of Britain’s greatest living novelists.

A social comedy.......2005-12-02
Summary: Not a thriller, but a social comedy that skewers the English class system while examining the face of evil.
On the evening of November 7, 1974, the seventh Earl of Lucan beat his children's young nanny to death in the darkened basement of his London townhouse. He attacked and severely injured his estranged wife. Lucan then walked out into the night and disappeared. A warrant was issued for his arrest, but he was never found. In 1999 Lucan was officially declared dead by the British government.
For almost 30 years, the press has speculated that the thuggish aristocrat was aided and abetted in his flight from justice by many of his upper class, old-school cronies. These people apparently couldn't abide the thought of one of their own - familiarly known as "Lucky" Lucan - standing trial for the death of a mere servant.
The Lucan case has inspired a number of true-crime books. Now, in her latest novel, Aiding and Abetting, literary veteran Muriel Spark has taken the facts of the case and "spun" them into a bizarre social comedy of hidden identities, dark agendas and darker souls.
The year is 1999. The location Paris. Dr. Hildegarde Wolfe, renowned psychiatrist to the rich and neurotic, has a dilemma. Not one, but two of her patients claim to be the missing Lord Lucan. She believes they are working together, that one of them is the genuine fugitive and the other is a double hired to throw pursuers off the trail.
One - or perhaps both - of the Lucans is blackmailing the doctor, for she herself is an imposter and fugitive. Twenty years earlier, Dr. Wolfe was known as Beate Pappenheim, a false stigmatic and faith healer who embezzled money from her adherents. (Much to her surprise, she'd also managed to miraculously heal a number of them.)
Meanwhile, back in London, a couple with past connections to the Lucan case decide to play amateur detective in order to find the missing earl - not to bring him to justice, as in an Agatha Christie mystery, but to interview him for a book they want to write. Lucan is, after all, a celebrity in the O.J. Simpson mold.
Although not a thriller, this slender book has enough plot twists, eccentric characters and dry wit to mollify the more sophisticated readers of that genre. The characters are put through the Hitchcockian paces of plot and counter-plot, chase and pursuit - with the plotters, chasers and pursued all changing places throughout the book. Finally, in an off-stage climax worthy of Evelyn Waugh, poetically just desserts are served to the worst offenders.
Beneath all this black humor, Spark explores with a deft hand the various faces of evil, as she weaves themes of sin and purification, blood and guilt, flight and punishment into the story.
A side note: This reviewer has a personal interest in the Lucan case. On November 7, 1974, I was staying in a bed-and-breakfast just around the block from the scene of the crime. I remember in the following days walking past the earl's townhouse, where a single bobby outside the front door kept an eye on the hordes of photographers and reporters loitering on the sidewalks.
None of those representatives of either the police or the press ever cracked "The Case of the Missing Murderous Earl," but Ms. Spark offers perhaps the most satisfying solution to the mystery.
For people who know how to deal.......2004-08-20
A remarkably entertaining read from the author of "A Far Cry from Kensington", which incidentally, is the first Muriel Spark novel in my collection.
Not only for true crime afficionados, the story serves to fill in the blanks in the life of the 7th Earl of Lucan, who disappeared in November 1974, after mistakenly murdering the nanny, and attempting to murder his estranged wife.
With a little help from his friends, he has managed to elude capture, and stay one step ahead of the law. He is declared officially dead in 1999.
Enter Dr. Hildegard Wolf, roving German "psychiatrist", who charges huge fees to talk mainly about herself. She soon has two patients claiming to be Lord Lucan, and she suspects that the pair are in fact partners, and up to no good.
Sure enough, her chequered and spotted past comes to light, and unable to report her patients to the authorities, she deals with the situation in her own way, as she is not without friends herself.
Enter Lacey, daughter of one of Lucan's friends, and Dr. Joseph Murray, another Lucan acquaintance, who set off on a search mission, which ends up as a quest of mutual self discovery.
With more people studying the habits of the original Lord, the game begins afresh, and the world becomes a little smaller for the two "Lucans", as their aristocratic shield begins to thin and fade.
Muriel Spark throws together a group of unlikeable characters, and concocts a gripping story with a most fitting if slightly abrupt ending.
Amanda Richards, August 20, 2004
Light, brisk satire mocking yesteryear's British aristocracy.......2004-08-01
The high-brow farce of "Aiding and Abetting" revolves around two drawn-from-real-life criminals who both have "blood on their hands." The first, Lord "Lucky" Lucan, who intended to murder his wife but mistakenly killed his children's nanny, disappeared in 1974 and hasn't been seen since. The second is Beate Pappenheim/Hildegard Wolf, a fraudulent stigmatic and faith healer who bamboozled her followers before escaping with a fortune.
But, to complicate matters even further, Spark adds a third impostor: a former butler who looks so much like Lucan ("They were not indistinquishable, but they might have been brothers.") that the two work in league to thwart either's capture. The comedy results when Spark brings together her three characters: a fraud who reenters the "real" world by assuming a new identity, a murderer who flees to the underworld by assuming a fake identity, and a butler who straddles both worlds by assuming the identity of a killer pretending not to be a killer. Each of the three becomes dependent on the other two for survival, and an uneasy detente results because the exposure of any of them would likely result in the exposure of all three.
Since authorities suspected that Lucan's escape was enabled by his aristocratic peers, the author adds further irony depicting an upper class who protects a murderer because it's the "proper" thing to do: "They seemed to have been faithful in the class-conscious sense." No doubt it's hard for modern (especially young) readers to imagine that, only thirty years ago, upper-class snobbishness extended even to assisting a homicidal maniac. British aristocrats "are not the same people as [they] were a quarter of a century ago . . . Since Lucan's day, snobs have been greatly emarginated." Spark is ridiculing both British aristocracy and their hankering for the "good old days"; it is this theme in particular that recalls the early satires of Evelyn Waugh.
The novel's hasty ending likewise reminds the reader of Waugh's "A Handful of Dust"; it is somewhat unsatisfying, not the least because the perspective shifts unexpectedly during the final pages. Still, although a slim, brisk read (barely a novella, in fact), "Aiding and Abetting" hits many of its upper-crust targets while simultaneously mocking the meaning of identity.
repetitive and boring.......2003-12-05
this comes from someone who knew nothing of the legend of lord lucan.. but still from the opening of the story i was intrigued by it.. however the book is constantly repeating the few details that it shares with us on the crime and lord lucan's disapperance over and over again. I felt the book to be very incomplete.. and the key word here really is repeatitive.. It's just a bore! Pass it! (the last two sentences being the only two in need of capitalization)
Intriguing Novella.......2003-02-11
Muriel Spark's novels have always been fabulous and Aiding and Abetting is certainly no exception. It is a fictional account of an actual murder suspect from Great Britain in the early 70s. Lord Lucan was accused of murdering his children's nanny and the attempted murder of his wife, but escaped capture. Although there are those that suspect he then killed himself, there are others who believe he has been living in some form of exile, with the help of many of his wealthy friends, the aiders and abettors the novel's title refers to. In this novel, we meet two "Lord Lucans", both seeking treatment in the present day from Dr. Hildegard Wolf, a psychiatrist practicing in France. She too is escaping some deceptions of her past (although they are no where near as heinous as murder). She initally believes they are both frauds, but things begin to change her mind. The novel also follows the paths of two people who believe they are closing in on Lord Lucan. But are they? This is an intriguing novella that tells an interesting story. Spark's writing is fabulous, as usual. Enjoy.

Wry satire of the true-crime genre and of the aristocracy........2005-09-30
This is a real treat to read, with a wonderfully appropriate grand finale which depends on surprise! A unique and suspenseful twist on the traditional murder mystery, this novel is based on the real-life character of Lord Lucan, who in 1974 killed his children's nanny by mistake instead of killing his wife. Though he vanished and has never been found, many have suspected that he has been housed and hidden over the years by a series of aristocratic friends.
In this satiric approach to the true-crime genre, Spark gives us wacky, off-the-wall characters--including two men who claim to be the "real" Lord Lucan. Adding to the dramatic mix are variety of aristocratic "aiders and abettors" who have protected and financially supported Lucan for twenty-five years, a psychiatrist who was once a phony stigmatic but who is now treating both "Lord Lucans," and several former acquaintances who now want Lucan caught, not because they believe that murder is wrong, but because times have changed--"Lucky Lucan failed to show up [for questioning], which was really lowering our standards....he was a very great bore."
Satiric and mordantly critical of aristocratic pretension, this is vintage Spark. Her plotting is tight, with no loose ends and no digressions, and her selection of details is exquisitely careful and controlled. Her themes and motifs, especially those of blood as it relates to both crime and breeding, are so intricately connected to all the characters and the plot, that it is difficult to discuss them without giving away the clever plot twists. And Spark does all this in less than two hundred pages. It is impossible not to read this at a gallop to find out what happens--while smiling the whole time at Spark's wry wit. Mary Whipple

From the supplier: Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with a per capita gross domestic product of $218. Haiti received about $477 million in international aid between 1973 and 1981, with 80% of the aid coming from the US, the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. Unfortunately, the aid has failed to improve the economy of Haiti because the export-driven economic policy of the US is incongruent with the agricultural orientation of the Haitian economy.

Hysterically Funny. .......2007-06-26
Don't take this any more seriously than you would a Terry Pratchett novel or a Zena episode. If you like campy, punny, word-based humor, it will push the limits of what you think is too much camp, puns, and downright silliness.
Very Monty-Python, very very silly. The plot romps along, happy, saucy, and raunchy to a pleasant and yet realistic enough conclusion for a book that includes tales of crying cheeses and lots of engaging descriptions of bad smells. Not to be missed.
Not worth the money.......2005-08-20
I had high hope for this book. I've heard good things about lawrence Watt-Evans and I'm a fan of Friesner. Unfortunately, this book does nether of them justice. The story idea is interesting enough (enough for me to shell out the money for it). A conquered queen gives birth to triplets and has to send two away or be killed, but the old retainer takes the two boys, and leaves the girl. But the actual writing makes me think its aimed for 10 year old maturity level, with a genius vocabulary level. The writing style is not captivating, and I pushed through several chapters after losing interest on the hope that it would get better... It didnt. This is the first time I've not been able to FINISH reading a book I started.
A funny, light read.......2002-11-12
This book is a hoot! It sends up most of the major conventions of the fantasy genre and has a great time doing it (what else would you expect from these authors?) Read this book a little at a time so you can savor all the zingers. But DON'T read it before bedtime--laughter is not conducive to sleep!
Rather amusing.......2000-11-22
This is a nicely done comic fantasy book. The characters are fairly shallow, the cliches are rampant and yet the book is an well done poke in the ribs at traditional "serious" fantasy. At times it comes off like a cross between a Monty Python script and the "Who's on first" conversation.
My only complaint is that it takes a little bit (50 pages or so) to ramp up to the truly funny scenarios, and thus initially gives the mistaken initial impression of not being all that entertaining. Once it's warmed up though it's a good fun read.
Funnier than the Tough Guide.......2000-03-26
This great rip on fantasy cliches predates Dianna Wynne Jones' satire by almost a decade, and it's considerably funnier. I love rereading it every couple of years; it's a keeper.

Cute but lightweight.......2001-12-15
Kieran Thane, alias the Knight, is in the business or sorting things out. On Mars, he has plenty of opportunities. A research company has discovered a way of transporting living organisms--a method that involves creating an exact duplicate at the receiving end. What happens to the original is somewhat arbitrary. Complications ensue--complications that only the Knight can deal with. Resolving this problem, however, only leads to escalating issues. The syndicate is anxious to get their money back, and the Knight heads off with a group that is exploring Martian archeology--and discovering ancient structures that could have only been built by the earthly pyramid builders.
MARTIAN KNIGHTLIFE combines tongue-in-cheek adventure with mystical mysteries. Veteran science fiction author James P. Hogan keeps up a steady stream of adventure while hinting at a fascinating new society developing in Mars. Kieran Thane is something of a science fiction version of John D. McDonald's Travis McGee, the thinking man's Robin Hood. Although Hogan doesn't dwell on the gritty philosophy of life the way McDonald does, it is certainly there in this novel with its combination of future dystopia and hope.
A plot which is lively and fun.......2001-11-11
Blend a detective story with a science fiction plot set in the future and you have Martian Knightlife, a fine mix which pairs strong characterization, mystery, and hard science. A gallant 'knight' is called upon to save relics and a man's credit alike. Add a touch of humor and a dose of romance and you have a plot which is lively and fun.

This is a wonderful book, from a wonderful woman. As my great aunt, our family enjoyed visiting her. Her book is a testament to her life, a I am amazed that she was able to live for so long. Even a few years before she died, she was blind, but was still able to play the piano beautifully. This book will amaze and surprise you. Enjoy reading it!

Book Description
George Campbell Hay (Deòrsa Mac Iain Dheòrsa) has been hailed as an important voice in Scottish literature and as a crucial figure in the renaissance of Gaelic poetry in the twentieth century. Yet with his collections long out of print, only a small proportion of his work has been available to the public. These two volumes gather together for the first time These two volumes present George Campbell Hay's complete original poems, in Gaelic, Scots, English, French, Italian, and Norwegian. Volume I presents all of the poems chronologically, with accompanying English translations. Volume II provides annotations to each poem, including a full list of sources; a detailed biography, heavily reliant on Hay's own correspondence, which sheds new light on the social, political and literary context of his work; an outline of Hay's main poetic concerns, in theme and in form; and some of Hay's own musical settings. The publication of this long-awaited scholarly edition is a landmark in Scottish and Gaelic publishing. The volumes represent a notable addition to the canon of twentieth-century Scottish literature and should permit a full evaluation of Hay's significance. Published as a two-volume set in a deluxe edition in association with the Lorimer Memorial Trust.

The Horse's Mouth.......1999-12-29
An excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about the beliefs and values of Highlanders. The book is a collection of songs in Gaelic with good translations and some tunes. There are historical notes and a short biography for each poet. The songs, all contempory, deal with the Rebellion of 1745; the songs of Alexander MacDonald in particular show the progress of rebellion; his early poems were meant to stir up support for the rising and the later ones to keep up the courage of those involved. There are songs in praise of the tartan plaid, of the Highland clans and 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. A great book for the serious academic as well as the romance novelist or Celtic musician.
The best and only work of its type!.......1998-01-20
a Charadean (Friends); For those with the Gaelic, native speakers or learners, or those merely interested in Gaelic music and history, this book serves as a wealth of information. Not only did the late, great Dr. Campbell put forth a magnificent volume of poetry, but an extremely important and generally overlooked primary source for those interested in the Jacobite period in general and the '45 in particular. For only here can be found the ideas and beliefs of the most important people in the Jacobite struggle - the Gaelic people themselves. Regardless of one's political viewpoint, it must be recognized that it is what the contemporary Gaels themselves thought and felt that is central to an understanding of why these people rose not once, but four times in sixty years, in an effort to restore the dynasty they viewed as the only rightful heirs to the throne. In these days of "debunking" historical revisionism, much of it generated by Whig (and latterly) Marxist/Leveller agendas, it is both interesting and important to see what the Loyal Clans of the Great Glen felt about the Cause.

Book Description
The Hebrides and Gaelic Highlands are one of the world's great treasure-houses of song. While many have plundered that legacy, from Marjory Kennedy Fraser onwards, most editions are either full of dubious emendation and alteration or are so scholarly as to be inaccessible except to specialists. This is the first collection of Gaelic song to address fully the needs of the singer and the needs of authenticity while remaining accessible to all. This collection combines the following features:
-- a general introduction to the Gaelic musical and poetic tradition -- reliable versions of the text and music for each song plus enough verses to make a viable performance -- full notes on the historical backgrounds of each song plus full references to other sources -- full notes on the technical aspects of the music and the song tradition -- full discography
Some of the songs in this collection date back to at least the fifteenth century but many of their elements reflect a culture far older still - a non-literate but far from ignorant society in which the arts were held in the highest reverence. It was through the highly trained memories of the bardic orders that knowledge was passed from one generation to another. To anyone interested in social history these songs paint a vivid picture of life among the Gaelic-speaking peoples, filling many of the gaps left by official histories and documents. These songs are a window into the lives of the people who composed and sang them - their hopes and fears, their jokes and preoccupations, what it was that made them angry or afraid. In their beauty and humanity they are amongst the jewels of western civilization.

A great value: a book to cherish for a lifetime and more!.......2007-07-29
There is quite literally a lifetime of enjoyment in this book for lovers of Scotland, poetry, history and Gaelic song.
Those of us who love the Gaelic in these far shores of America and other places certainly are exiles to some degree but also custodians of what we consider a sacred relic and an essential part of our splendid ancient heritage such as the MIST-COVERED MOUNTAINS (played at JFK's funeral)
So here are some songs of YOUNG HEROES ( òglach):
Tha mi'n dùil, tha mi'n dùil I expect, I expect
Tha mi'n dùil-sa bhith tilleadh I expect to return
Dh'ionnsaigh Dùthaich MhicLèoid To the land of Macleod
Far an òg robh mi mire Where I played when I was young
Fhuair sinn litrichean o'n rìgh We got the letters from the king
Gus sinn fhìn dhèanamh ullamh So that we could prepare
Los a dhol a-null do'n Fhraing To go over to France
A chur braing 'san fhear-mhillidh To upset the destroyer (Boney; Napoleon though in another context it could be Hitler as well)
Nuair a chuir iad sinn air tìr When they put us ashore
A-measg shìobain is murain Among the waves and the sea-bent
Thug sinn batal air an tràigh We fought a battle on the beach
'S gun d'rinn pàirt againn fuireach And some of us remained
Fhir a dh'imicheas do'n Iar You who travel to the West
Ged robh bliadhna mun ruig thu Though it were a year before you arrive
Thoir an t-soiridh seo do m'ghràdh Bring this greeting to my loved one
"Ma is slàn mi gun tig mi" "If I am alive, I will come"
Tha mi'n dùil, tha mi'n dùil I expect, I expect
Tha mi'n dùil-sa bhith tilleadh I expect to return
Dh'ionnsaigh Dùthaich MhicLèoid To the land of Macleod
Far an òg robh mi mire Where I played when I was young
It is interesting to compare the tone of the old Highland song to this more modern Scots variation by Roddy MacMillan which is quite powerful.
I Will Go
Chorus
I will go, I will go
When the fighting is over
Tae the land o' MacLeod
That I left to be a soldier
I will go, I will go
When the King's son came along
And called us all together
Sayin', Brave Highland men
Will you fight for my father?
I will go, I will go
Chorus
I will go, I will go
When the fighting is over
Tae the land o' MacLeod
That I left to be a soldier
I will go, I will go
I've a buckle on my belt
A sword in my scabbard
A red coat on my back
And a shillin' in my pocket
I will go, I will go
Chorus
I will go, I will go
When the fighting is over
Tae the land o' MacLeod
That I left to be a soldier
I will go, I will go
When they brought us all on board
The lasses were singin'
But the tears came to their eyes
When the bells started ringin'
I will go, I will go
Chorus
I will go, I will go
When the fighting is over
Tae the land o' MacLeod
That I left to be a soldier
I will go, I will go
When we landed on the shore
And saw the foreign heather
We knew that some would fall
And would lie there forever
I will go, I will go
Chorus
I will go, I will go
When the fighting is over
Tae the land o' MacLeod
That I left to be a soldier
I will go, I will go
When we came back to the glen
The winter was coming
Our goods lay in the snow
And our houses were burnin'
I will go... I will go
Chorus
I will go, I will go
When the fighting is over
Tae the land o' MacLeod
That I left to be a soldier
I will go, I will go
