Narrow Gauge.......2003-03-17
I gave this book a fairly low rating, but you will learn some history as you plod thru the story. there are a few of these small rails still being used today. however, instead of hauling precious metal they carry tourists. the story will be entertaining and misterious.
This train doesn't know where it is!.......2002-02-05
After having read all the previous Nathan Stone/Wes Stone books, this one fell flat in the end. Perhaps Compton died while writing this one, as it whimpered to an end. For one thing, even though the Durango-Silverton Railroad figures into the story, the writer didn't know his geography or railroad well enough to get the route correct. In reality, the railroad dead ends at Silverton, so it was not possible to get from Silverton directly to Denver or vice-versa. Also, the book's back cover would have you believe that there was some mysterious armored train under the control of the bad guys. Never appeared, never happened. It does not match the story line at all. Perhaps it got mixed up with a different story? Another point is that the geography and travel times mentioned do not make any sense. Yuma, Arizona is only a few minutes horseback ride from the Gulf of California? Some of the story elements got a little unbelievable. A mine chamber with a secret swinging stone door created by only two men? How is it that the three heroes are able to return to Dodge all the way from Yuma, Arizona practically overnight? It was an interesting story until near the end but sadly fell apart on the inconsistencies and story errors related to the railroad and geography. All too often, I recognized sentences and statements lifted from earlier books in the series as if the writer couldn't think of a new way to say it.
Border Empire Saga.......2000-07-06
For those who are die hard westerns fan's this book is sure to keep you turning the page's yet for the newcomer it has all the action you would expect from a Ralph Compton novel, sure to make a western fan for life. The books use of real event's and legend's of the old west is great tool in educating new reader's to " The old west". I am sure that after reading this novel you will add many more of Ralph Compton's masterpieces to your personal library.

Book Description
Founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1880, the Durango & Silverton Railroad was used originally to haul silver and gold from the San Juan Mountains. Through the years, this railroad has established a unique history. During WW II its equipment was used to process uranium for use in the war, and in the 1960's it was used as a sight for several Hollywood movies, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In TRAINS, Kuklin captures the life of these old steam engines with extraordinary photographs and engaging text. She offers informative descriptions about the history of the

Great book for preschoolers!.......2007-02-07
My 3 1/2 year-old son loves this book. It has actual photos of a steam engine and the text is very brief and simple. Great for kids with short attention spans. For about a month now my son has asked us to read this every night before bed along with "Dinosaur Train." Highly recommend for preschool boys who love trains!
Breath taking picutres.......2006-08-29
A wonderful picture book of this steam locomotive line, in the beautiful setting of the Rocky's. Our 3 year old loves to look at the pictures and point out things in the various scenes.
A lovely 'you are there' train ride.......2005-12-14
Young train fans who enjoy vivid, bright picturebook stories will find All Aboard! A True Train Story captures perfectly the sights, sounds, and travels of some of America's oldest steam engines. Kuklin's color photos provide plenty of close-up and action shots, while dialogue covers both train operations and scenic passages. A lovely 'you are there' train ride.
Can't you hear the whistle blowing?.......2005-03-21
Kids constantly and without cease, amaze. For example, you enter into the profession of Children's Librarianship with a set of preconceived notions. At least, I did. I assumed that kids, little kids, would be interested in the following topics: Fairy tales, dinosaurs, trucks, firemen, and various animals of a pet-like nature. What didn't I count on? The lure of trains. Children adore trains. They like to learn about what makes a train run. They like to see where it goes and what kinds of sounds it makes. Why on earth is this? I would've thought that in this topsy-turvy world of high tech electronics and sleek modes of transportation the world of trains would have been abandoned and forgotten. Not so much. And as a result, various picture books have capitalized on this locomotive goldmine. Some of these are delicious inventive affairs, like Margaret Wise Brown's, "Two Little Trains" (be sure you get the version illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon). And then there are others like "All Aboard!". A perfectly harmless book that shows photographs of trains with some vague sound effects and, as a result, captures the hearts of youngsters everywhere. It's a fine book. Just not as great as some of the other train tales out there.
Photographing one of the five Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge steam engines still in working condition today, the book views the train as it navigates its way along the Colorado Rocky Mountains in the summertime. The book begins with, "All aboard! Turn the page and step back to a time when narrow gauge steam engines clickety-clacked along the historic San Juan wilderness". And clickety-clack they do. This isn't really a book that supposes that what you see in the pictures could have taken place decades ago, of course. The passenger holding the digital camera says as much. But with a loud whoo-whoo the machine is off and chugging. We get a lot of two word descriptive sentences after that point. Things like "Lights blinking" and "More steam". The text is fine and all, but it never gets a momentum going. You find yourself wishing that it would slowly increase like a train, hit its peak, then slow down at the end. It never does. Instead, it just comes to a normal close without much hooplah.
But what the book lacks in inventiveness it almost makes up for in its afterword. At the end of the tale the reader is given factual information about the classic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge locomotives. There's a section on the tracks, and another on the whistles. There's even a webpage for the trains themselves (which, frankly, were a bit more enticing than the book). These facts at the end of the story may be a little old for some kids, but for others they'll be the perfect way to learn more about their favorite forms of transportation.
Now don't get me wrong. This is a fine n' dandy book and certainly will make its way onto the bookshelves of many an enthusiast for years and years to come. But there are better books about trains out there. Choose this one if you absolutely must have a book that includes real photographs of trains. Choose "Two Little Trains" if you want something particularly well-written as well. A nice book.

Book Description
Detective Inspector Chen is the Singapore Three police department's snake agent - the detective in charge of supernatural and mystical investigations. Chen has several problems: in addition to colleagues who don't trust him and his mystical ways, a patron goddess whom he has offended and a demonic wife who's tired of staying home alone, he's been paired with one of Hell's own vice officers, Seneschal Zhu Irzh, to investigate the illegal trade in souls. Political pressures both Earthly and otherworldly seek to block their investigations at every turn. As a plot involving both Singapore Three's industrial elite and Hell's own Ministry of Epidemics is revealed, it becomes apparent that the stakes are higher than anyone had previously suspected.

Blurb: first in a series of near-future occult thrillers that feature an audascious mix of magic and futuristic technology in a compelling Far Eastern setting.
Wonderful read, went out and got the 2nd straight away!
Great discriptions of characters, setting and Chinese magic. I was inthralled by the discriptions of the Celestrial & Hellish realms, good storyline.

Great fun to read.......2007-04-03
This was the first book of Liz Williams that I read based on a good review from Locus and I am looking forward to reading the next ones of this series. The characters are fun and quite believable. The action is fast. I finished reading this book in just a couple of days so the only reproach is that it went by a little too fast that's why it gets only 4 out of 5 stars.
Genre-rama.......2006-11-02
In "Snake Agent," the ever-clever Liz Williams concocts a tongue in cheek brew combining the police procedural, the horror tale, fantasy, and science fiction. Set in an alternate Earth that seems to be a few years beyond our present, it features Singapore 3's (don't ask what happened to Singapore 1 and 2) Detective Inspector Chen, the police inspector involved with the supernatural--the snake agent of the title. (This is the first of a series, but it's complete in itself.)
His current case leads him to hell, where he teams up with Hell's Seneschal Zhu Irzh in order to thwart a vast conspiracy involving one of Hell's many bureaus. Ms. Williams has serious issues with bureaus and the 'crats who run them (she's shown this before in an earlier novel, "Empire of Bones"), a fact that figures prominently in this novel's clever plot.
Wittily written (the characters often speak in phrases that evoke Jack Vance's--hardly a bad thing), cleverly plotted, the book's a total delight.
welcome new series.......2006-09-23
Take a healthy dose of mythology and eastern religion, mix in the humor of Big Trouble in Little China and the buddy-cop banter of Lethal Weapon and adorn with a fantastic Jon Foster cover and what do you get? Well, you get the beginnings of an entertaining new mystery series by author Liz Williams.
The Snake Agent is a difficult book to categorize. A blurb from the publisher's website reads:
John Constantine meets Chow Yun-Fat in this near-future occult thriller. Detective Inspector Chen is the Singapore Three police department's snake agent, in charge of supernatural and mystical investigations.
Chen has several problems: In addition to colleagues who don't trust him and his mystical ways, a patron goddess whom he has offended, and a demonic wife who's tired of staying home alone, he's been paired with one of Hell's own vice officers, Seneschal Zhu Irzh, to investigate the illegal trade in souls.
Political pressures both earthly and otherworldly seem to block their investigation at every turn. As a plot involving Singapore Three's industrial elite and Hell's own Ministry of Epidemics is revealed, it becomes apparent that the stakes are higher than anyone had previously suspected.
"Constantine meets Chow Yun-Fat" is a tremendously accurate description of Liz Williams' protagonist, Detective Inspector Wei Chen. I recently re-watched The Replacement Killers and I could not help picturing Chow Yun-Fat as Wei Chen's adventures unfolded before me. If ever filmed he would be the perfect choice.
I said that William's novel is hard to classify and it is. The story abounds with magic as does a typical fantasy novel. It is a mystery, set in a near future science fiction universe replete with technology that would be at home in a story by Phillip K. Dick. It is also a primer for eastern mysticism and a view of earth, heaven, and hell steeped in ancient mythology. In addition there are elements of horror reminiscient of the aforementioned John Constantine and a wry humor similar to that in the very best cult classic comedies.
Having so many varied influences in the wrong hands could result in a mess of a story. Fortunately Liz Williams crafts her tale with deft hands making The Snake Agent a fun introduction to this series of detective novels. It is easy to see why she has been twice nominated for Phillip K. Dick awards. The Snake Agent unfolds at just the right pace to keep one engaged in the story without ever overwhelming the reader. There is a lot going on with the genre-mixing plot but the reader never feels lost.
At its core The Snake Agent is just pure fun. The best thing about the novel is the characters and their relationships. Wei Chen is a mortal man married to Inari, an denizen of the Underworld whom he rescued from an unwanted marriage. Inari has a protective animal companion that masquerades as a tea pot in earthly realms. On earth Chen has a law enforcement partner who is a perfect combination of Reginald VelJohnson's character in Die Hard and Danny Glover's in Lethal Weapon. Of course the nether realms have their own enforcement agencies and so Chen's counterpart, Seneschal Zhu Irzh, figures prominently in the tale as well. There is nothing better than a science fiction/fantasy tale flavored with chivalrous romance and solid friendships.
If you are a fan of any of the above mentioned films I would venture to say that you will enjoy Liz William's debut novel in the Detective Inspector Chen series. As of this writing the second novel in the series, The Demon and the City, is nearing release and I really look forward to rejoining Wei Chen in his investigative adventures. Funny, adventurous, scary and magical, The Snake Agent is a great opportunity to try something a little different in your reading. I tip my hat to you Ms. Williams. Well done.
How can you possibly go wrong with a sci-fi/wuxia buddy cop mystery/adventure?.......2006-09-13
Part "buddy cop" thriller, part near-future science fiction adventure, part occult odyssey complete with a trip into frightening realms of Chinese Hell, Liz Williams' SNAKE AGENT is easily one of the most entertaining and fantastic novels (along with its sequel, THE DEMON AND THE CITY) I've read this year. The paring of demonic vice cop Seneschal Zhu Irzh with the virtuous "Snake Agent" (and licensed feng shui practitioner) Detective Inspector Chen is inspired madness, as is the cinematic, jaw-dropping, roller-coaster of a plot. If you can, imagine a fusion of RUSH HOUR and BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, throw in a dash of DOCTOR STRANGE, and you'll be well on your way to the sort of fun that awaits you in SNAKE AGENT. A must-read!

Slow Pirates!.......2002-05-30
THE SLOW EMPIRE is a mostly enjoyable romp consisting of a collection of more or less standalone set pieces that only tie together at the very end. The plot connecting them is paper thin, and isn't all that enthralling, but what is recommended about this book is its great central concept and the irrelevant asides that take up most of its pages.
The basic concept behind the book is that the TARDIS has landed in a strange portion of space where traveling faster than the speed of light is impossible. In an Empire spanning multiple worlds and various star systems, this means that journeys between planets will literally take hundreds of years. It's an interesting twist to have the characters suddenly finding themselves stuck in an Einstein-ruled universe. All of Dave Stone's descriptions of this Empire at the beginning of the book are wonderful. Stone cleverly portrayed this section of space in the epic manner that it deserved, reminding me somewhat of the galaxy-spanning society that Isaac Asimov created in his Foundation series. Unfortunately, while the accounts at the start of the story paint a vast, sprawling and fairly out-of-touch galactic empire, they fade a bit as the protagonists start venturing out into the universe. The book is too short to give each planet a distinctive feeling, and the result is to end up with a handful of mostly faceless worlds that appear as though they're reusing the same sets with a slightly different colour of paint slapped on them. Still, the set up was very nice and depicted quite vividly.
I'm not quite sure what was going on with the Doctor in this one. The author goes out of his way to state that the Doctor is regressing into the lives of his previous selves, but I couldn't figure out what story reason this served. At first, I assumed that it was an excuse for poor characterization (although the Doctor is portrayed fairly well for most of the book). Upon reflection I wondered if there wasn't a comparison going on between the Seventh and Eighth Doctors. Certainly at the end of the book, the Doctor turns out to have been fairly manipulative throughout much of the story, but almost nothing is made of it. In fact, the ending of the story seems to mirror similar events at the climax of the previous story, THE YEAR OF INTELLIGENT TIGERS, but is done here with so much less subtlety that the point lacks focus.
Where the book succeeds are the points in which the plot is turned off and the story veers wildly from one setting to another. Some might say that all this stuff is merely padding and that it doesn't affect the plot one jot (Anji would be one of those people, as she even remarks upon it during the course of the adventure). These people would be absolutely correct. But far from being a criticism of the book, this actually provides us with the more entertaining sections. Bad padding may be a terrible and boring thing to read, but the padding on display here is of a far higher quality than that. It's enjoyable and amusing.
Of course, not every aside and irrelevancy ends up as a positive aspect. There are several cases where Stone's excesses cause inward groaning. The awful similes and metaphors of previous books are back and at times they are quite distracting. Some of the prose tiptoes into the wrong side of pretentiousness causing much annoyance and rolling of eyes. As mentioned earlier, the plot really isn't all that interesting when said and done; the voyage itself is what is appealing, not the details behind it.
All over, this is an enjoyable tale that skimps a bit on the plot, but is still a lot of fun. The digressions and tangents work more often than they don't, resulting in a pleasant read. It's only a pity that at the end the plot comes back into play, as that section is far less interesting than the diversions that came before. The book isn't the deepest or most taxing thing that you'll ever encounter, but it's certainly amusing and a fun way to spend several hours.

Customer Reviews:
"A great first Kabbalah book".......2007-09-28
This was the first Kabbalah book that I read, definetely the right one, the subject being so new to me, since I am not Jewish, but Michael Berg writes so beautifully and it such simple words that I understood easily and so did my soul. It gave me a very good intro to Kabbalah, has beautiful stories about the Baalshemtov (a Tzadik, mystic, sage), it has the beautiful story about the white Angels, the black Angels and the grey Angels, after this story, I see dificulties in my life from a totally diferent perspective. This book talks about redemption, and God's mercy, and many more subjects that can only enrich your life!!! After this book I continue to read The Essential Zohar, the 72 names of God, which I meditate on frequently, and so on, the journey continues!!!
The Way to Eternal Life.......2007-01-19
This book helps to develop personal relationship with God and find the way to Eternal Life. The person who gains Eternal Life has accomplished the goal of life. This book helps the humanity to accomplished the goal of life.
A wonderful book!!!.......2006-08-05
This is a very interesting book. I fully recommend it to anyone looking for spiritual answers. You may not agree with everything -- and that's OK. But take whatever you get from this book and simply make it yours. You don't have to become a follower of Kabbalah to put some of the ideas into practice. Try it. You may like it.

...............2006-02-20
"The Way" -- with a title like that you'd think you were purchasing your very own spiritual epiphany. In less than one hundred pages if I remember correctly.
I actually picked this up when I was walking through the mall. I'd already been sort of curious about the subject, I've been studying Wicca and Buddhism for years and I'm always open to new ideas.
So as you might be able to imagine, I with my new found interest, curled up in a chair and began reading about "The Way". Oooh.
A mere 30 minutes later it was done. Nothing had been said in that thing that a teenager can't sit and think about on their own. For being a ten dollar book, this thing can seriously just as well serve as an intro to a much more thorough book. But then again that wouldn't make as much money. Had this been written out of passion it wouldn't have been so vague and brief.
Don't waste your time on this, or on anything written by the Bergs.
Kabbalah has a lot of great ideas and I still haven't given up hope, I'm still reading and looking for good writing. Someone give me something thought provoking and detail oriented.
USE THE WISDOM OF THE WAY.......2005-12-29
Michael Berg wrote a wonderful introduction to Kabbalah. Anyone, from the beginner to the advanced will find this book useful.
Michael Berg introduces the reader to Kabbalah, and quickly teaches-not preaches-the beautiful path that is Kabbalah.
This is something that shouldn't be missed!
I urge you to read this book.
