Book Description

From bestselling author Rosalyn McMillan comes the dramatic story of one African-American family's struggle for survival as the civil rights movement rages around them.

This Side of Eternity

When Anne Russell's father is killed in a work-related accident in the late 1960s, she and her five siblings battle poverty and racial strife in their hometown of Memphis. Just sixteen years old, Anne lands a job at the local newspaper and copes as best she can with her siblings' problems: everything from epilepsy to abortions to bad attitudes.

In the years to come, Anne's romance with the newspaper's owner leads to pregnancy and marriage, and Anne herself begins to embody the proud, indefatigable spirit of those who would succeed in changing the world. Still, many challenges lie ahead for Anne and the Russell family...and for a nation striving toward equality.

4 out of 5 stars Promising Historical Fiction.......2004-08-14

THIS SIDE OF ETERNITY is a fictionalized account of the civil rights era and beyond, and centers on the lives of two African-American women--an aunt and her niece. The novel covers the period from the 1960's to the present, and the setting is located basically in Memphis, Tennessee.

Although Rosalyn McMillan generally tells a good story (I liked her other four novels as well), her inadequate knowledge and sometimes awkward use of grammar and sentence structure can be annoying. Ironically, this weakness has not improved over time because her earlier novels were not quite as flawed. If readers can overlook this minor distraction, however, they will enjoy THIS SIDE OF ETERNITY for its fine characterization, interesting plot, and unique perspective on a turbulent period in America's history.

4 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING.......2003-11-19

This side of Eternity was my favorite book by Rosalyn Mcmillan since Knowing. Other than the historical part of the book, which I felt was unecessary, I thought it was a very interesting story with a lot of meaning. Anne who was my favorite character in the book was an example of the choices that we make sometime. I think her decision to mary that brute was due to a lack of proper guidance, lack of unity in her family, and vulnerability which got her mistaking lust for love.

Anne's involvement with Scott Hamilton, was like putting a curse on herself and her family. Prior to meeting Scott, I think Anne had a very promissing future. I think she would've been far more successeful at an earlier age without Scott.

This story was very touching dealing with real life issues and very spiritual. I'm sure a lot of us have heard stories similar to Annes or perhaps even lived it.

It's been a while Rosalyn. I hope you're working on your next book.

3 out of 5 stars Pages Readers Group Reviews "This Side Of Eternity".......2003-11-07

October 2003...Pages Readers group chose as their selection, This Side of Eternity, by Rosalyn McMillan. Readers are presented retrospective views of life in Memphis, Tennessee during the civil rights movement intertwined with one family's history of survival. While some members felt the story line was frequently overshadowed by the news accounts of that era, the mystic behind each character's actions kept you turning the pages.

The overall epic is that of race, city, character and a family surviving the hardship of being poor and Negro during an age of tumultuous change. The Russell family's struggle begins early on with Anne, the youngest of her siblings, vowing to get through this, realizing they have to do more than survive the injustice - each one has to change it.

As the reader, you share in their pain the loss of loved ones because of racial injustices, ignorance and poverty. You cheer the successes, no matter how small as each person is irrevocably changed because they "finally" looked inward at themselves and changed. This all happens against the backdrop of a great city also surviving what it needed to face ... change, progress.

In conclusion, Martin Luther King once said, "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by God, Creator, with certain inalienable rights; that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. This is a dream. It's a great dream." And, for Anne and the Russell family ... their great dreams do come true.

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2003-06-03

If you're looking for an easy read, pass this one by. Though this book had some page-turning moments...those few moments were drowned out by her overuse of her "moments in history." This book was a toss-up between a novel and history book. Towards the end, I found myself skipping over the majority of the pages to get to the actual story which was somewhat like a soap opera. Not one of the books that will make my all-time favorites list but I would recommend to someone to read.

4 out of 5 stars Rosalyn does it once again!!!.......2003-03-29

This was a very good read. I had purchased this book well over a year ago and just recently decided to read it. It becomes apparent that Rosalyn is challenging her sibling (Terry).

    Product Description

From Library Journal McMillan (yes, sister of Terry and author of such novels as The Flip Side of Sin) hits the market with another steamy portrayal of African American family life. Beginning with the grisly death of Walter Russell in a garbage truck crusher, the story follows the lives of his orphaned children over nearly half a decade. Left on their own, the five Russell children eke out an impoverished existence and manage with hard work to launch themselves into adulthood despite Nikkie's developmental disability and epilepsy, Mae's 13 abortions and abusive behavior, Kirk's bullheaded negativism, Wesley's disappearance, and Anne's poor choice of lovers. Despite annual newsy updates interjected by the author describing civil rights events (the novel is set in the late 1960s), which don't really seem related, the story never captures a sense of reality. One hopes that the alarming number of grammatical errors ("Always a good cook, they never left the kitchen table hungry") in the galley proof will be corrected. Finally, the author's use of disparaging racial remarks ("Even Vietnamese people were buying businesses") does little to further the cause of equality, one of the book's strong themes. Fans of McMillan's previous chatty novels will be disappointed. Not recommended. Jennifer Baker, Seattle P.L. 5 out of 5 stars Classic Joker.......2004-03-30

The Joker is, and has always been, my favorite fictional character of all time. If you are a fan of the Killing Joke, and are a fan of the dark, psychotic portrayal of the Joker, then this book will definitely please you. I first read the book when I was in fourth grade. The story "On a Beautiful Summers day, he was" disturbed me then and still does now. It was the one story from this book that has stuck with me for all the years since I first read it (about 11 years ago). Check this book out; it's a real treat for Batman fans.

4 out of 5 stars A bit uneven, but definitely worth the read.......2003-04-26

I find The Joker to be a fascinating fictional character, and this collection of short stories definitely manages (at least for the most part) to get at what I feel is the true character of The Clown Prince of Crime. This little overlooked book is probably the best portrayal of The Joker this side of Alan Moore's The Killing Joke.

The quality of the stories is uneven, ranging from brilliant to forgettable. Unfortunately, the very best stories are all weighted toward the first part of the book and sets you up thinking that ALL of the stories will be that good. My favorites are "The Man Who Laughs" and "On a Beautiful Summer's Day, He Was." The latter, while being the least "Joker"-y of the lot, is also the most disturbing. "On the Wire" is also excellent, and although "Jangletown" falls into the average group, it's memorable for its description of the Joker (which brought shadows of Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum) and the hints at pederasty. Most of the others are average but still entertaining and full of dark, disturbing moments (Bruce Wayne's punchline in "Dying is Easy, Comedy is Hard," the opening of "Bone," and the patricide in "Best of All"). The only story I flat out didn't like was "The Joker's Christmas."

I thought it was an excellent decision to use horror writers for the most part to bring The Joker to life...I can't imagine a genre he more belongs at home in.

Do yourself a favor a grab a copy of this book. It's truly unsettling.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Joker stories.......2001-11-27

This book consists of several short stories, each written by a different author, and all of them about the Joker. The stories are too short for me to tell you much about them, and besides, part of what makes this book great is the different angles taken on the Joker. Each story focus on the Joker, but each shows a different part of the whole Joker.
I would recomend this to any Batman fan, any comic fan, or anyone looking for good short stories.

          5 out of 5 stars A Damn Good Book.......2001-03-21

To me, this book defines The Joker; A mean-spirited, incredibly intelligent, completely psychotic mass murderer with a way beyond warped sense of humor. I first read this book in High School. Once I picked it up, it was so amazing/disturbing I couldn't put it down until I'd read the whole thing. I wrote a paper on it that got me into AP English. Now 10+ years later, it was so good I'm searching for it again. This book is a KEEPER. Be careful who you loan it to, they might think so too.

          5 out of 5 stars Terrifying........1999-06-14

"Bone" by Will Murray is worth the price of the book alone. "Oh, I'm collecting kitties and puttin' 'em in bags," sings our emerald-topped antagonist. What he does with them is, well, horrific. Throw in F. Paul Wilson's "Definitive Therapy," a chilling look at The Joker through a psychiatrist's eyes, and Robert Sheckley's "Joker's War," with The Joker somehow caught up in the second World War, and you've got a must-read for fans of this mythos. The rest of the stories are hit and miss, but you won't care. This collection of stories will keep you up late.

5 out of 5 stars An anthology of ponderings on questions uttered by Jesus in the New Testament.......2005-08-13

Written by a Trappist monk from Saint Joseph's Abbey, Who Do You Say I Am? Meditations on Jesus' Questions in the Gospels is an anthology of ponderings on questions uttered by Jesus in the New Testament. Written in plain-terms and accessible to lay readers and theologians alike, Who Do You Say I Am? draws upon biblical scholarship, history, simple morality, and the unceasing quest for answers and understanding. Who Do You Say I Am? is not a compendium of strict answers, but rather a stimulating tool encouraging the reader to think about his or her own spirituality, and rationally contemplate the meaning in Jesus' message. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Pick a Question, Any Question.......2005-02-15

Pennington's basic theme is that living with a question, even a question like What if I win the lottery? "letting it cast its light on our daily routine," makes a difference. The key to spiritual deepening, he suggests, is asking the "right" questions, the questions Jesus asks throughout scripture. From that premise, Pennington presents chapters on 15 separate questions of Jesus ranging from "What do you want me to do for you?" to "How many loaves do you have?" Each chapter begins with the appropriate passage from scripture and contains cultural and theological background to both the question and the answer Jesus received.

Lessons we can learn and apply today are woven into the material along with Pennington's personal reflections. For example, he says God did not just create the world to spin on its own, but continues to bring it forth in a manner shaped, in part, by what we ask God to do; and "Sin is never an obstacle to our being healed by the Lord. In fact, it is an admission ticket if we come for healing...."

The work is rounded out by a 14-page list of more questions with citations from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This book promises myriad opportunities for an individual or faith-sharing group to begin living with the right questions.

                          Product Description

It seems that every epoch of Christian church history has a question from the lips of our Lord. The days of the 21st century are days of unbelievable challenge and opportunity. But Christ has a quetion for His church today. It is the issue Southern Baptists and all true evangelicals must face for the next generation.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Witnessing in the Midst of Religious Pluralism.......2001-03-20

In the midsts of religous pluralism today, how should one speaks about what one believes? Can we show tolerance with others while keeping what we believe? Calvin Shenk integrates love, respect and understanding of other religions in the way Christians should witness among them. This book is in my list of the best book for witnessing. It's faith affirming and love encouraging.

                                Book Description

Bishop John A. Marshall looks at the Gospels from a unique persepctive by examining every question that is asked--by Jesus, by his disciples, by his friends and his enemies. The result is a lively, practical and profound book which gives the reader a vivid sense of the issues and conflicts that Jesus faced.

The foreword is by James Cardinal Hickey of Washington, DC.

After Bishop Marshall's death in 1994, several manuscripts were found among his effects. This is the first of his manuscripts to be to be published.
