Book Description
Hailed as a masterpiece, this poignant mother-daughter novel revolves around the story of a young woman's troubled relationship with her mother. Narrated in the voices of four generations of Jewish women, The Wholeness of a Broken Heart explores the vastly different experiences which divide first generation Jewish Americans from their parents and grand-parents.
"Katie Singer is a gifted and compelling writer who tells a good story and burrows into her characters' psyches."-Phillip Lopate
"Fresh energy, style and perception...Well-defined characters, emotion (but not sentimentality) and compassion (not pseudo-psychology) set this account of the survival tactics of Jewish families apart from similar tales...A novel filled with authentic human feeling, humor and hope."-Publishers Weekly
"Katie Singer...explores the mother-daughter relationship with rare wisdom...[The Wholeness of a Broken Heart] is both a social history of the American Jewish experience and a meditation on the bonds between women."-Self Magazine
"An entire matriarchy is imagined in this novel of multiple voices, a chorus that makes for a moving immigrant story."-Pearl Abraham, author of The Romance Reader
Customer Reviews:
Loved this book.......2007-09-12
This book kept me up late at night several nights in a row. A very compelling story of generations of Jewish women and the relationships between them. As someone writing something similar, this really helped me see how it could be framed in a way that really works. And being from Cambridge, I loved that some of the story took place there. Wonderful book, I have already given copies to several people.
Hauntingly Gorgeous -- Worthy of A Chopin Ballade!!.......2007-07-06
This book was absolutely engrossing & there are parts which were truly heartbreaking. It offers just about everything one could wish for in a family saga/drama. The mother/daughter conflict was portrayed in such a manner that, at times, I wanted to weep for Hannah. Although I guessed Celia's problem, this didn't diminish this new author's [for me] work. The characters remain with me, still. You won't want to leave these pages, & when you do, they will stay with you. Singer's book reminded me, once again, of my very special relationship with my maternal grandmother, as well as my daughter's super relationship with my mother. These are such important & essential relationships since, I feel, they [help] shape who & what we are or who and/or what we may become. Additionally, I am a Group Facilitator, & I used Katie Singer's assignment [Hannah's photo assignment] in one particular class. It was non-threatening, & assisted people in "opening up." Thank you Ms. Singer & BRAVA!! In my hunger/desire for more fiction from you, I ask for MORE PLEASE!!
This book is a gift to the heart..........2006-06-12
There are writers who weave a good story. There are writers who inspire. Katie Singer does both. The Wholeness of a Broken Heart reminds us of the special bond that exists between mothers, daughters and grandmothers. It is a bond that transcends time and space -- and cannot be broken even during the darker days of our lives. Katie Singer shines a welcome light on the importance of remembering the past, cherishing the present, and looking forward to the future knowing we carry with us the strength and love of the beloved mothers and grandmothers whose spirits are always with us.
Every Mother and every daughter will love this book........2005-11-02
I don't have the words that Singer can conjur to make you feel so much. I am still waiting for more from this amazing author.
AN OUTSTANDING DEBUT.......2005-05-05
An accomplished storyteller and practiced observer, Katie Singer delivers The Wholeness Of A Broken Heart, her debut novel, with the surety and panache of a seasoned pro. No small task for this probing tale of the Jewish/American experience as synthesized in the lives of four generations is related in alternating voices, some speaking from beyond the grave.
As each woman speaks a mother/daughter relation is revealed, illuminating one family's legacies of love and pain.
The title, we are told, comes from a Yiddish proverb: "There's nothing more whole than a broken heart." An apt title as 29-year-old Hannah, the story's primary narrator, is in pain. Her mother, Celia, has summarily rejected her only child, leaving the young woman confounded and stricken. Attempting to understand Celia's unexpected distancing, Hannah explores not only her own life but the lives of her antecedents. Especially moving among the voices heard is that of Vitl, a stillborn child, whose powerful description of the oncoming Holocaust stings and disturbs.
All Hannah knows of her father is that he is a social worker whom Celia divorced when Hannah was three. Her childhood is spent with her stepfather and Celia who, despite somewhat erratic behavior, seems to dote on the girl. Their Sundays are spent at the home of Hannah's maternal grandparents, Ida and Moe.
When Ida's voice is heard we learn that shortly after high school graduation in 1920 she found work at a plumbing firm owned by Moe. When he proposes marriage, Ida describes her father's reaction: "`A rich businessman wants you for his wife,' he says, like God has picked me to be queen of the human race." Seeing no alternative, Ida agrees to this loveless match. "Then my lips come together and tighten against my teeth," she says. "Just like a wrench around a pipe."
Moe is more than a regimented manager who "tick-tick-ticks to run his shop," he is an abuser who climbs into bed with their daughter, Celia. Aware of this, Ida is powerless to help. She has "a mind that can't figure out how to feed two girls and house them without a man's help. Other than praying, I can't think of what to do."
Great-grandmother Channa, for whom Hannah is named, was born around 1880 and lived in a tiny shtetl near Kiev. She witnesses the heartless pillaging of the Cossacks until her family migrates to America, "the golden land," where her father labors in a shirt factory, and she meets and falls in love with Meyer.
In retelling these family histories, Hannah also relates her own from the day when Celia abruptly tells her she is no longer welcome at home, through her years at the University of Michigan, to a teaching job in Boston, and meeting Jonathan, a Boston globe photographer with whom she falls in love.
However, as compelling as these narratives are one may weary of Hannah's introspection, continued dwelling on her own happiness. One is tempted to remind her that not everyone has a Brady Bunch mother, and say, "C'mon girl, you're 29 - time to get on with your life!"
That reservation aside, The Wholeness Of A Broken Heart is a promising debut. Ms. Singer has displayed singular narrative gifts as well as a willingness to tackle substantive issues. We look forward to her next work.

Long, long ago in Deverry, Lillorigga, daughter of the Boar clan and cousin to the child-king, becomes enmeshed in the increasingly sinister politics at the palace of Dun Deverry. Not least among the plotters is Lilli's own mother, the enchantress Merodda. Lilli has inherited Merodda's powers, but not her taste for power. When Merodda orders the death of Lilli's foster mother, Bevyan, Lilli leaves Deverry swearing revenge. Her actions will have consequences not only in her time, but also in generations to come, as those who die are reincarnated.
Book Description
Katharine Kerr's richly imagined cycle of novels set in Deverry and the Westlands has earned a devoted following--and a reputation as the finest Celtic fantasy being written today. Now she returns to Deverry's war-ravaged past....
In a kingdom torn by civil war, young Lillorigga seeks to shield her dawning powers from her cruel mother Merodda's manipulation. Mistress of a magic that, untamed, could kill her, Lilli brings her terrifying visions under the kindlier tutelage of the mysterious dweomermaster, Nevyn. But soon she must choose between her own clan and the true king who fights to claim his rightful throne, between sanctuary and blood feud, loyalty and love. Little does she dream that the slaughter she invites, and the malevolence she defies, could stalk her across the ages...twisting and twining the strands of timeless destinies.

Book Eight in the Series, and Still Going Strong.......2006-08-01
In Cengarn, Rhodry of the silver daggers - half-elven, half-human - is beset by strange dreams. A dark-haired enchantress, the Raven Woman, is haunting his sleep, and he can find no release, even in the arms of Dallandra, his lover.
Little does he know that his feud with the Raven Woman goes back over three hundred years, to a time when the throne of Deverry stood under threat of civil war. In those days, the young king's counsin, Lilli, was forced by her scheming mother to scry for omens, and she saw terrible visions: great red wyverns sweeping down from the mountains to plunge like hawks upon a herd opf feeding swine....
The fancies of an idle mind? Or omens foretelling bloodshed and disaster for the clan of the Boar?
Katherine Kerr's writing takes a bit of getting used to, but it's worth the effort. She approaches her stories with a Celtic storytelling mindset, which means she conveys events according to their significance to the story, as opposed to chronologically. Consequently, while the stories begin in the "present" (which is an elastic concept, anyway, in a fantasy setting), the events unfold, chapter wise, both in the "present" and in the distant past. This can be frustrating, at first, but Kerr's writing is heavily steeped in Pagan and Western Mystery tradition, and the Celtic setting (and mindset) of her characters means that time, or chronological time, is not essentially relevant. To be honest, I found the first book infuriating, as I spent a lot of time trying to adjust to the writing style. However, I found the story engrossing enough that I persevered, and by the second book was so hooked I've read all ten in her three series.
Kerr's story evolves around the concept of reincarnation, and unfinished business, and "karma", and fate. The same souls recur again and again, just in new bodies, over the course of the centuries over which the story unfolds.
Kerr's world is one of High Fantasy, populated by Elves, Men, and Dwarves, as well as faeries/elementals, which she terms the "Wildfolk". However, hers is a slightly more dark, dangerous and less clear cut world than the works of other High Fantasy authors, not the least due to the fact that someone who was your friend in a former life can re-emerge in the story centuries later as a foe, and vice versa. There is a tremendous amount of magic, but it's the magic of the Western Mystery tradition (quite a bit of Golden Dawn and even Enochiana), and that of R.J. Stewarts Faery tradition. There are dragons, and giant beast men.
The Elves are a fallen race, driven out of their magnificent and palatial cities centuries before by invaders, and who now roam the plains as primitives. They possess the potential to be superlative magicians, but the knowledge was lost in the fall of their civilization. Humans, though warlike and shorter lived, have preserved this knowledge, but guard it jealously. The Wildfolk, basically magic incarnate, are unhinged from the effects of "karma", but lack permanence of personality, and cannot grow or develop, cursed to stagnation. The Dwarves are a secretive mystery, entrenched within the earth. Each has something to offer the other, and the story that unfolds is the story of this "technology" exchange, of sorts, between them.
Fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley, who clearly influenced Kerr, will be enraptured by this series, as will fans of Kate Eliott, who Kerr, herself, clearly influenced. It's phenomenal! Devotees of the New Age, Esoteric or Occult will find themselves nodding and smiling as they read, and sincerely hoping Kerr's writing will do for the Western Mystery and Faery traditions what Bradley's has done for Wicca.
This book rules.......2004-01-16
Katherine Kerr is a master. I have never been so enchanted by a story. I have delved deeper than I ever thought possible. I have read the whole series 9 times and it keeps getting better. Pure genius. My brother feels the same.
It's part of a series? LAME!.......2002-08-20
This book apparently is part of a many book long series, which you MUST read in order to understand it. Unfortunately, NO indication is given of this on the book itself. The story skips around through a series of non-related characters and sub-storylines that maybe make sense if you have read the rest, but as a standalone book it is worthless. The writing style is decent, but nothing is ever really explained well enough for you to piece things together. Usually when I pick up a book that is part of a series, the author explains things well enough that I can get an idea of 'what has happened before'. Not in this book. There are NO clues at all. It was very confusing.
a little complicated at first, but very good.......2002-02-01
The dragon mage series are a part of a much larger project - the epic or the kingdom of Deverry.
We follow charachters in their several different lives all at once. We meet a charachter in his "present" life and in his past and future one. It is hard at first and you can get a little lost, but when you get it it is a delightfull story to read. It enchants you and then you spend almost a year cursing the author for not writing the last book of the series yet.
The storry is complex and the charachters develop nicely, although sometimes they lack some depth.
It is overall a good book to read for a more demanding mind.
The Red Wyvern.......2000-04-01
I have found all of Katharine Kerr's books to be exceptional. She has created a whole world and filled its history with detailed characters and facinating plots. This book is the first is a new series for her, though it is also a continuation of her on-going story. I can highly recommend all her books.

The Lost Years - this is how it should be done........1999-04-12
If you're an aspiring Star Trek author, you should read "The Lost Years". This is one of the few original Star Trek novels which reads like a screenplay from the original series. Bravo.
This book fills in the motivations of the main characters that were missing from the movies. These motivations make total sense given the background in the original series and the movies. Too many of the other novels introduce new elements and ideas which have no basis in the original show nor the movies.

Traitor Winds
It began with the lost years, the long-awaited story of what happened to Captain Kirk and the legendary crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise when their original five-year mission ended. Now, it is more than a year later, and Kirk and his crew have settled into their new, separate assignments.
But when Sulu and Chekov find themselves framed for murder and treason, the two officers are forced to go into hiding. As Admiral Kirk and Uhura frantically search for evidence to prove Sulu and Chekov innocent, they uncover evidence to prove Sulu and Chekov innocent, they uncover a plot that threatens the very foundations of Starfleet. The web of conspiracy is woven tighter as the real culprits and Federation agents close in on the fugitives. Unsure of whom to trust and with time running out, the former U.S.S. Enterprise shipmates must once again rely on each other to find the truth and prevent the Federation from facing utter destruction.

Catching up with old friends.......2007-03-23
This is the third book in the LOST YEARS saga and takes up shortly after the events of A FLAG FULL OF STARS and shortly before STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. Uhura, Sulu and Chekhov are meeting for the weekly dinner reunion as the novel opens. McCoy has joined them, bringing along his predecessor as Doctor on the Enterprise, Dr. Piper. As the group fills each other in on their various activities and plans for the future. Soon, however, the group finds themselves swept up in a vast conspiracy that threatens to tear the Enterprise bridge crew apart permanently.
This is a definite treat for Chekhov fans. Most of the action in the novel focuses on him and explains how he went from wearing Command gold in the original TV series to Security red in STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. While the main character is Chekhov there is plenty of action for Uhura and Sulu as well. The only familiar character not at least making an appearance in this one is Spock who is only mentioned in passing.
For anyone who is a devoted fan of the series THE LOST YEARS saga is a must read to fill in the gaps between the end of the original series and the first movie. Even for a more casual fan this one has enough action to stand on its own.
The Best Of The Lost Years.......2006-05-25
By far the best of the four 'Lost Years' books. Good action, good character development, (ever wondered how ol' Pavel wound up going from navigation to security? Wonder no more!) and a great story. Highly recommended.
Superb story focussing on second-tier characters........2006-01-10
This is a marvellous story, well-conceived and well-executed, focussing on Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov. Not for fans of the usual "big three" of Star Trek; Kirk and McCoy make only cameo apprearences, (as do Scotty, M'Benga, Chapel, and Rand) and Spock makes none at all, but for anyone who enjoys seeing the lower-ranking characters get a bit of developement, this book is delightful.
These Winds Don't Blow.......2004-03-29
As Trek books go, Traitor Winds is a stand-out. Briskly paced, well-written, and characters as true to the originals as in any TOS novel. The plot is in many ways a liberal re-working The Undiscovered Country, with Enterprise crewmembers framed for a conspiracy involving high levels of the Federation and Starfleet, and a denouement at a peace conference to boot. But don't let that deter you from a fine, entertaining read.
My favorite book in the Lost Years series.......2001-09-04
This book is my favorite in the Lost Years series for one simple reason: Dr. Leonard H. McCoy. Before other reviewers go to scoffing and rating this one unhelpful, let me explain why.
The scenes in which he treats a wounded Chekov for a broken arm show me so clearly what all doctors should strive for as an ideal: not just "bedside manner" which can be put on and taken off like a coat, but actual _compassion_ for their patients, that they left me breathless and dazed with wonder at the enormity of the revelation. L. A. Graf should be a lecturer (or is that lecturers?) at every medical internship school in the country. At the very least, this book should be required reading for all surgical students. (Probably a lttle unrealistic, I know, but where there is life, there is hope.)

ONE OF THE BEST.......2006-04-26
Unforgettable book. Paul Twitchell opens up the whole area of even talking about spirituality, clarifies the limitations of language, and starts those who may be interested on a new life of directly experiencing inner light and inner sound. God's love. I'd read this and any book by Harold Klemp that attracts your attention. Then see if you resonate with this spiritual path to God, to realizing God for yourself. In your own way. If this way of life is right for you now, you won't have any doubts. For my part, I have never found such loving, bold, comprehensive, and high viewpoints on God and Soul anywhere else.
A Good book, but flawed by Twitchell's dishonesty.......2003-09-21
After reading "Confessions of a God Seeker" by Ford Johnson I now view all of Twitchell's writings with a pound of salt. Although, Twitchell has made the thoughts, words, and experiences of others his own, there is still useful information here.
Normally, I would have given this book a higher rating, but the difficulty in determining where the origional source of this information left off and Twitchell's "creative imagination" began makes much of the information in the book suspect. Still, there is information contained within this book that is helpful to any Soul consciously beginning or continuing their Inner journey. Just pay attention, and beware of the dogma.
This is a must read for spiritual adventurers!.......2002-04-17
Anyone who puts this book down is obviously not on a spiritual path or ignorant to spiritual teaching. I would say this is a bit heavy for beginners, although this was one of my first spiritual books that I read for the first time when I was 15 years old. If you would like to learn about soul travel, astral projection and how the levels of heaven work then you won't be disappointed with Eckankar. After reading it I had the most incredible out of body experience. It teaches you how to have no fear and have a guide to assist you. If you don't want to participate in soul travel there is still plenty of mastery to learn here. Paul Twitchell was way before his time and a being of pure love.
Eckankar: The Key To Secret Worlds.......2002-01-22
This book is a plagarized work and I am surprised that it is for sale. The original authors should be reinbursed for the use of their information in making this book. I feel that people should be aware of this before buying this book.
Yet another quintisential Paul Twitchell........2001-01-18
I first read 'Eckankar: The key to secret worlds' as a student. I remember that I almost virtually finished the volume on the spot.
Was it possible that this depth of knowledge existed? Where was his curious hierarchy of Eck Masters all this time when I was searching for answers to questions on God, Heaven, Death and dying? Could I meet them on my own volition? Paul Twitchell also speaks authoritatively of Heaven, a concept so familiar to the majority of us yet so distant. In this book, Paul provides the proof to his claims- in simple, easy to follow Spiritual Exercises.
Like all other great writings on God and the spiritual, the proof lies in the experience, since there are no scientific instruments to universally reproduce a spiritual experience.
It's therefore noteworthy that this book and others by Twitchell remain Spiritual compasses in these times where the pace of life makes for little or no time for things spiritual. No matter your religious persuasion, this book has something to offer you.

A Spiritual milestone........2001-02-04
Eckankar: The key to secret worlds is a landmark in the history of religious literature. This is one of the earlier texts of an astounding and prolific Religious leader-Paul Twitchell. Paul was an enigma at a time when very few existed in religious circles. This book remains a comprehensive text of the doctrine of the New-Age Religion, Eckankar. For the serious student of religion and spirituality, it presents an invaluable compass on the road to God and Heaven. With this book, Paul Twitchell secured the continuity of the teachings of Eckankar as an exacting spiritual discipline, universally reproducible and an authority on God and the Inner worlds.
