5 out of 5 stars Very insightful.......2006-07-28

A very insightful look into the life and death of Jesus and the manyh questions sourounding the biblical tale, examining the evidence, the fact and new archeological discoveries. This book examines many facets of the last days of the life of Jesus, including especially quesitoning the location of 'Golgotha' and examining the claims pertaining tot he Garden tomb near Skull hill in Jerusalem. An interesting book the combines religion, theology, and archeology to examine the biblical tale.

5 out of 5 stars Good Story, Study & Conclusion.......2002-04-18

This is a good book. I purchased a copy while in Israel... Part 1 is a good telling of "The Story", Part 2 is "The Setting" = Come see the place where he lay. He is not here; for he has been raised. Matt 28:6. Part 2 talks about both locations and history of both the Holy Sepulchre & Garden Tomb. Part 3 "The Significance", this concludes the book. This book was so good I had to buy another copy when I got home from Amazon so I can keep my 'Israel' copy :)

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Bit Of Speculation.......2001-04-18

Having visited the Holy Land in January of 2000 I was immediately drawn in by the cover of this book, with it's picture of the Garden Tomb (a possible alternative site of the tomb of Christ). Walker presents a nice chronology of the events of the weekend that changed the world (the weekend of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ), that is a mix of info from the Bible and informed speculation. I used this book for a Sunday School class during Lent and it was well received. The speculation can be presented as speculation and makes for the beginning of some interesting discussions. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the crucifixion and resurrection placed in historical context, but especially believe it would be of interest to those who have visited Jerusalem and have seen both the church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Garden tomb.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, beautiful yet somber novel.......2005-01-06

David Bottoms was a teacher (maybe he still is) at Georgia State where I graduated from. My first few years in school I wanted to be a novelist and became an English Major. Bottoms was the guy whose class EVERYBODY wanted to get into.I never did. I tried 3 straight semesters and got blocked all 3 times. Later I changed majors (twice). Anyway, I heard about this genius/poet/novelist and I HAD to read his book. I am glad that I did. It is a simple story about simple people but it's beautifully written and the characterization/description/plot and well, just about everything, work well in the story. i only gave it 4 stars because I felt it could have been a lot longer than it was. I do not like SHORT novels and it left me wanting more. I don't know if any of you have ever read any Pinckney Benedict or Flannery O'Connor but Bottoms writes very much like them. I wish he'd write more novels. The book is a definite good read and I highly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2000-03-29

It's an excellent book that has great words to describe the story. It's good for visualization. The book makes you want to read more and more. I read five cahpters in one hour because it was so interesting.

4 out of 5 stars City Folk Runs Amok in the Rural Countryside..........2005-12-02

It takes a while to get into the story as the style of writing is wordy and dense. The authors favors lengthy description of minute details which I felt was wholly unnecessary and tedious. Leaves you wondering why can't the author just can't get into the crux of the story.

Otherwise, a good take on tackling romance about a hip girl in a highly demanding PR job meets once-upon-a-time investment banker turned organic farmer set against the current agricultural reforms taking place in England.

The author takes a dig at the save the wildlife movement pitched against the more mundane bread and butter issues of farmers in rural Suffolk trying hard to survive against the ever evolving British agricultural mishaps that happened in the past and present.

The subtle humour surfaces when the city folk thought that they had landed in a country hotel for a long weekend away from London but turned out otherwise and that's where the fun starts!

          3 out of 5 stars You mean it's over?!?.......2005-05-04

This was my favorite book in the trilogy right up to the last chapter. The entire series is preparing for Ragnarok, and this book details the protagonist as he comes into his birthright. The only problem is, it ends before Ragnarok starts! The sequel trilogy begins 300 years after Ragnarok, so the greatest event in the history of the world, the climax of the entire series, is never shown! I was very, very bitter, and I doubt I'll reread the series.

1 out of 5 stars Childish superhero stuff.......2001-02-06

This book concludes the march from an arogant too good in swordfighting to believe superhero towards finally become supreme GOD. Why didn't anyone ever try to fight as a team instead of being killed of one by one by this human meat shredder or at least shoot this guy full of arrows. The hero's in this series are all bigger than life and I didn't like any single one of them. Compared to the character in this series Conan the barbarian is a whimp and Conan shows remarkable intelligence compared to these idiots. Whenever I get out of shelf space in my cupboard this series is definitely the first to go.

5 out of 5 stars More than just sword and sorcery.......2000-02-01

I read this book about a month ago, and thought it was excellent. Although a little lengthy, it summed up the trilogy seemlessly, in a way that left me satisfied that the world wasn't going to be destroyed. Wizards and gods and the best swordsman in the world, what more could I ask for?

I found out today. More than just a story device, the law vs. chaos battle is Ancient Greek philosophy worked right into the seams of a sword and sorcery novel. The need for balance, because both are nessecary for creation, all is evident in the Greek creation myth. Descartes also talked about it in his meditations, God, the Supreme Being, and his opposite, which he called "nought", the completely abscence of being. This novel shows that law and chaos are supreme, not good and evil which are mere constructs of law. Although Norse Gods are used, this is a mere detail, as the gods are all carry-overs from Greece, with different names.

This is a wonderful story if you're just looking for a fun fantasy novel. But if you're interested, look a little deeper.

          5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2000-02-01

This book was great! Mickey Zucker leads you on and you don't know what is going to happen or how characters are goingto end up! I thought the suspense at the end was great.. If your looking for a great read, then read the first in this great series. This is definetly on my Favorites list.

          4 out of 5 stars yayayayayayaya!!!!!.......1999-02-18

I love this book! I love the whole series! they are all pretty great! They keep getting better and better! I did, however, have one problem with it. Reichert keeps repeating things in this book. I think it's REALLY annoying! But I got over it.

Absolutely brilliant. Having read many UFO investigation books this belongs among them - where does the truth finish and the fiction begin, if in fact it does, There is an awful lot of truth in here. Excellent plot, delivery, pace and some very cleaver cross references to reality and past ufology. A must for all ufologists - the sequel has a lot to match up to.

This book really gets your attention early and holds it throughout. As I'm ex-military, I really liked how thorough he was in incorporating a lot of the actual equipment that would be used in these scenarios into the plot. I felt as though I could actually be there. I am not too familiar with British command structures but Mr. Pope did a great job of educating me on their functions as the book went along. The Glossary of Abbreviations was so helpful throughout. I feel that he did a great job of marrying fiction to fact. You find yourself hoping it is much more fiction than fact as you read it. I found it quite thought provoking, considering UFO's do appear to be a real phenomenon, of what who knows? Let's hope this scenario remains fiction. Great job, Nick Pope!

I have read this book from cover to cover. The authors connection with nature and his surrounding are quite evident. "Peeling Onions" made me smile. How true those words are. You can feel the emotion in this book, the true feeling of the author come to light in all of his works. A pleasure to read.

I read Nature's Child and loved it. It is a quirky look at life and the world around us using the art of poetry. My favorite poem is Peeling Onion's. It makes you smile and makes you think. I found that I did this many times with this book, and we can never have too much of that. You can see the author's life and life changes poured out onto paper. I would highly sugest this book, you may not like it all but you can't read it without one of the poem's truly touching you.

                  Product Description

"The Secret of Thunder Mountain" (#6), utilizes Gulliver's Texas ranch as a setting- a ranch that Gulliver seems to spend precious little time on. Here a cavern in a nearby peak is being utilized by ruthless killers who robbed an armored car of three million dollars in gold several years before. At Thunder Mountain the gang have high-powered electric furnaces to melt the gold and local rocks together to form an appearance of ore which they then hope to be able to "legitimately" reprocess without suspicion. But their huge electrical generators and furnaces produce a loud static interference on television and high-frequency radio bands, and in an effort to track down the location of this static in order to help out a friendly old man whose television reception is being ruined, Tom builds a radio direction-finder which is, incidentally, described with complete technical accuracy. Plotting on a map from two different locations the directional readings for the static, Tom finds that the two lines on his map meet at Thunder Mountain. Was the mine on Thunder Mountain haunted? Tom Quest had to go through an amazing adventure before he found out. This book contains some of Fran Striker's very best writing, from the descriptions of Hamilton Quest's somber victorian apartment in New York City to the killer waiting in the weeds of a vacant lot in Texas, sweating in the hot sun and slapping at a bug on his hand. The tone, detail, and pace of this book are unsurpassed.

                              Book Description

As the global population continues to grow, family planning is fast becoming one of the most critical issues facing the planet. While many organizations--most prominently the United Nations--are trying to implement policies that will help curb the population explosion, these measures are frequently blocked by those professing conservative religious beliefs. In many of the world's religions there is a restrictive and pro-natalist view on family planning, and this is one legitimate reading of those religious traditions. As the essays in this volume demonstrate, however, this is not the only legitimate or orthodox view. Seeking to counteract the simplistic idea that all religions are completely antagonistic toward family planning, the authors--all scholar-practitioners of the religions about which they write--present alternative interpretations of religions' views about family planning. Arguing for the existence of equally valid traditions that allow contraception and abortion, they seek to escape the confines of oversimplified either/or, pro-choice/pro-life arguments. Instead, they point the way toward a more open discussion of family planning. Dispelling the notion that the world's religions are uniformly conservative on issues of family planning, the authors show that the parameters of orthodoxy are wider and gentler than that, and that the great religious traditions are wiser and more variegated than a simple repetition of the most conservative views would suggest.

Daniel C Maguire is professor of Moral Theological Ethics at Marquette University, a Catholic, Jesuit Institution, president of the Religious Consultation on Population, Reproductive Health and Ethics in Milwaukee, WI with a degree in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
With a continuation of the growth of the global population, contraception or family planning and abortion becomes very critical and moral issues that face today's family, no matter where they are living or from what religion they stem. Sometimes the views of professionals, international organizations or agencies will eventually clash with the view of clergy and religious belief.
This book has 12 chapters: a Jewish perspective, Roman Catholicism, Protestant Christianity, Islam, Hindu view, Thai Buddhism, practices in Nigeria, American Indian traditions, Chinese considerations during the late Imperial period, Taoist approaches, Jainism with a concluding chapter on reproduction and sexuality in a changing world.
There are about 80 million pregnancies globally each year with about one third unwanted or mistimed. Fifty million end up in abortion with 20 million performed under unsafe conditions and 78,000 women die each year. Not to mention the hundred of thousands with short or long-term disabilities as a result. These fact makes this book very important and efforts by governments and United Nations to decriminalize and make abortions safer should be looked upon positively.
Many of the world religions have a say upon the issue of family planning, but the attitudes and rulings have fluctuated over time. The authors of this book from various part of the world and different religions present alternative interpretations of their various religion's view upon family planning and show a more wide and more open stand than the usual conservative held views that we generally hear.
We found this book important in the continuing debate on abortion and family planning from the viewpoint of religion.
