5 out of 5 stars Thank you Mr. Haber.......2002-03-22

Dear Mr. Haber,

Thank you for writing this wholly satisfying, and life afirming story of growing up in the 1940's

I was 7 years old in 1941 (about the same age as the storyteller) in The Red Heifer.

I grew up in the Boro Park section of Brooklyn, another Jewish enclave and attended Yeshiva Etz Chaim. My school was just around the corner on 13th Avenue from my 2 bedroom apartment in a 4 story walk-up.

After listening to me praise your book, some ask "What's it about?" I reply by asking them to imagine a combination of Huckelberry Finn and Catcher in the Rye set in New York.

You described my childhhod pefectly, as though you were by side. Your book brought back memories of my father leading the round table debate of current events around the kichen table. This was usually with my older sister and her friends. I absorbed these discussions and latter gave my now informed opions to the "gang" that was trying to make sense of our crazy world, with our limited knowledge. We hung out in front in front the Menorah Temple(the local pool hall and bowling alley) every Friday and Saturday night.

Although most the the incidents depicted in The Red Heifer didn't happen to me, I recognize all my childood friends.

I was already reading passages aloud from your book to my wife, when I came across the recipe for the "Gogl-Mogl". This nearly blew my mind. I was right back in the kitchen on 51st Street, third floor rear, diagonally across from the elevated portion the the BMT line of the subway. In the past when I described this concoction to my family, the thought it was just a family folk remedy. Thank you for reafrming a part of my childhood that was almost forgotten.

I apppreciate the work that went into writing this book, since my son has also written a book. ...

I really connected with this book . and I look foward to a sequel
Sincerely yours,

Lionel Press

5 out of 5 stars An unexpected delight.......2001-06-02

Don't let the novel's relative brevity fool you: This is, in its ambition, scope and its wealth of incidents and insights, a very big book indeed. It is an allegorical account, sometimes poignant, sometimes comic, sometimes almost mystical, of a Jewish boy's childhood and adolescence in New York's Lower East Side of the 1930s and 40s. Given the vividness and apparent authenticity of the descriptions of the sights, sounds and even smells of that time and place, one assumes that the novel is at least in part autobiographical. In any case, that is less important than how well "The Red Heifer" works as a piece of storytelling. Part Isaac Babel, part Henry Roth, part Isaac Bashevis Singer and part Saul Bellow, it is also an original. Recommended.

"A purr at the right time can do wonders," says Rhiow, the furry, black heroine of To Visit the Queen,. Diane Duane's mettlesome cats can work wonders with more than their purring: they're wizards, capable of casting spells, walking on air, traveling through space and time, and speaking to humans--if they choose to. In this sequel to the bestselling The Book of Night with Moon, Rhiow and her team are called in to troubleshoot a malfunctioning magical portal in the London underground. Gradually, they unravel a conspiracy that threatens to twist their reality into a nightmarish alternate history--one in which Victorian England gets a boost from future science and uses nuclear technology to terrorize the world. This perfidious design rests upon the assassination of Queen Victoria, and it's up to Rhiow, Arhu, Urruah, and the London cats to save the queen.

Duane has earned an enormous following with her stories of the unending battle between the evil Lone Power and the forces of life, here championed by Rhiow and the other wizard cats. Although her stories are usually lively reads, in To Visit the Queen, Duane takes a long time to build up to the action and burdens the narrative with large lumps of magic terminology that's more than reminiscent of computer programs or mathematical theorems. But there's a lot of fun to be had from the wheels-within-wheels universes going awry, in spotting tidbits of history, and in following the chain of events as the traitor in the pride reveals its claws. --Blaise Selby

Book Description

Rhiow, Urruah, and Arhu, the wizard cats who saved New York City in Diane Duane's The Book of Night with Moon, are summoned to London to deal with a crisis in the very fabric of time. Their old nemesis, the evil Lone One, is manipulating an alternate universe to unleash nuclear destruction that will spread across the dimensions. Aided by a 15-year-old Arthur Conan Doyle, the feline heroes must save the life of Queen Victoria -- every Queen Victoria in every universe -- and find the forgotten magic needed to restore the correct course of time...before they cease to exist. And that would be a cat-astrophic outcome indeed.

Download Description

The cat heroes of The Book of Night with Moon are called out of our time and into the year 1874 to help prevent an assassination plot against Queen Victoria in this delightful sequel to the national fantasy bestseller. Rhiow, head of the feline team that saved New York City in the first book, returns along with her partners Urruah and Arhu, called upon to use their wizardly powers to avert disaster in Victorian England. During their trip to the past via wizardly magic, the cats meet up with a fifteen-year-old Arthur Conan Doyle, Queen Victoria herself, E.A. Wallis Budge, and various other historical figures. Their archenemy, the Lone Power, is discovered to be behind the plot. Will the cat wizards and their human counterparts discover enough details to stop him?

4 out of 5 stars "Book of Night with Moon" was better, but this is still good.......2005-01-13

New York City as a setting was more appealing to me than Britain. I suspect Duane has spent more time in NYC and can make the place more vivid than London as well. Still, the book is entertaining and definitely worth reading even if you haven't read the first book in the series.

"To Visit the Queen" will stand alone from "Book of Night with Moon", but I believe reading the two books in order is a better option.

4 out of 5 stars A cat may look at a queen...but can it save her?.......2003-08-16

All Duane's fantasy--the "Tale of the Five," the "Young Wizards" series which takes place in the same Universe as this book and its prequel--turns on the unending battle between the Powers That Be (the forces of life, or what a Star Wars fan might call "the Light Side") and the Lone Power (the renegade god whom Christians term "the Devil"), each aided by its own mortal adherents and sometimes willing, sometimes unaware pawns. In this story, feline wizard and Worldgate technician Rhiow and the survivors of her team--opera-loving tom Urruah and visionary kitten Arhu--must travel to London to try to repair a malfunctioning gate (cats, unlike humans, can both see and manipulate the "strings" that make the gates work). Gradually they discover that an alternate England has been brought into being through the scheming of the Lone Power, and threatens to overwhelm their own reality and end all life on Earth. To prevent it from doing so, they must forestall the assassination of the alternate Queen Victoria in her very bed--and the way they do it could only be accomplished by cats.

As always seems to be true in Duane's work, there are touches of tragedy--the fate of the gallant London teamleader Huff and his beloved mate Auhlae may make you reach for the Kleenex box. But her alternate England is splendidly imagined, and there are light moments as well, like Rhiow's reflections on the possibility of finding a mate for her widowed human, Mike. Saurian wizard Ith reappears and performs gallantly, and his and the cats' interaction with a young Arthur Conan Doyle is charming. Now, Diane, when can we hope to see another adventure of Rhiow and her team?

5 out of 5 stars ailurophiles will love it!.......2003-03-26

I just finished reading the book about 10 minutes ago! What a great sequel to "Night With Moon"... it carries forward some of the unresolved feelings and events from the first book, and leaves you feeling a bit easier about them. I do disagree with some of the other reviews that found this book too drawn-out or some of the plot points contrived. The book built up slowly but steadily, not with as much action as "Night With Moon" but with more detective work on the part of Rhiow, her team, and their new allies -- more the literary equivalent of a good suspense movie than an action-hero one. And also unlike some other reviews, I didn't think the battle with the Lone One was "tacked on" or unnecessary. In fact, it was almost inevitable after the cats foil Her plans for Queen Victoria. Think about it -- if you were a selfish, vindictive Power who was absolutely sure you were going to win, and suddenly your scheme was stopped in its tracks, wouldn't you be furious and decide to rid yourself of the "obstacles" once and for all? The book even leaves room for another sequel (maybe the further adventures of Arhu and Siffha'h?) and more bliss for cat lovers. I'll be keeping my figurative whiskers attuned for it!

5 out of 5 stars A Follow-up book from Night With Moon.......2002-07-28

A wonderful follow-up to the fabulous Night With Moon. I wondered at the time how Duane was going to be able to top Night With Moon. She does an excellent job of surpassing herself & the ending of "To Visit The Queen" was surprising. There are sad moments in this one, which make it a slightly more introspective book than the other title, but it has equally rapid plot & strong action plotlines. I loved seeing Arthur Conan Doyle as well. Wouldn't he love to still be starring in our literary achievements? :)

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but it could use some editting.......2002-04-04

I really enjoyed the time travel aspect of this book, but I'm afriad that the book itself is in series need of some editing. It's been a while since I read it, but I know at least HALF the book was setting up the characters and the predicament, without much rising action at all. After the mystery is solved and all problems corrected, the cats must fight the Lone Power in what seems to be a hastily constructed battle. I mean, they solve all the problems, (after waiting half the book to find out what the problems are) and then they head home, but on their way home they have a quick stop to fight Satan. This feels like a tacked on battle that the author felt needed to be in the book but she had no idea where to put it, so she just stuck it in here. Ugh. If you want to read a good book like this, read one of the first three Young Wizards books or the first Feline Wizards books. They are far superior. This one is good only for true fans of the Wizardry series and even then is a weak entry into them.

Book Description

An international sensation, The Royal Physician's Visit magnificently recasts the dramatic era of Danish history when Johann Friedrich Struensee -- court physician to mad young King Christian -- stepped through an aperture in history and became the holder of absolute power in Denmark. His is a gripping tale of power, sex, love, and the life of the mind, and it is superbly rendered here by one of Sweden's most acclaimed writers. A charismatic German doctor and brilliant intellectual, Struensee used his influence to introduce hundreds of reforms in Denmark in the 1760s. He had a tender and erotic affair with Queen Caroline Mathilde, who was unsatisfied by her unstable, childlike husband. Yet Struensee lacked the subtlety of a skilled politician and the cunning to choose enemies wisely; these flaws proved fatal, and would eventually lead to his tragic demise.

4 out of 5 stars Dark pages of Danish history.......2006-04-27

Progress that is enforced on immature and unprepared receptors and thus rejected, reforms that threaten the establishment and thus have to be redressed, sinister plots, conspiracies, coups d' etat, revolution, adultery and illegitimate children...

During the second half of the 18th century, the small Kingdom of Denmark is torn between the forces of the Enlightenment and those of the pietist and monolithic royal establishment. A fierce struggle ensues, a struggle for power and absolute control, one in which the small, the stupid and the insignificant prevail, though not for long, as "the black glow from the torches of the Enlightenment" may have been subdued but has not been extinguished. Given time and with renewed force it will conclude that which has been left unfinished.

An enchanting historical novel that balances precariously between life and death, reason and madness, light and darkness, love and hate. Not an easy read as the author often speaks in riddles rendering it challenging for the reader to decipher the hidden meanings. Other times I felt I had to try to make sense of madmen's ramblings and manic chantings, find reason amidst the chaos. Yet a very intriguing and captivating read, dark and rigid, a book full of those elements that have made up the essence of politics from time immemorial.

2 out of 5 stars The Royal Physician Overstayed His Welcome.......2006-03-09

I did not think very highly of this book. It seemed well written at first, but my emotional detachment while reading the story showed that the author was not conveying any feeling through the story. The prose was repetitive, there were too many characters (all from an omniscient narrator), and we never get to know or care about the characters. The author provides very few scenes where the characters interact with each other. It is a "play" that is all monologue, trying to be profound. The problem is that after a while, the profound becomes indistinguishable from the shallow. From the beginnng, we know that Struensee will arrive, take over, and be overthrown, so there is certainly not an exciting plot.I did not even care when Struensee was executed--he was a bland and boring character.
I found two interesting aspects of this book. One was the slow descent into madness of King Christian, and his relationship with the prostitute Caterine. It might be worth the beginning of the book to read about King Christian. The other interesting thing was the character of Queen Caroline Mathilde, sister of George III. She matured from a frightened girl to a poweful woman by the end of the book, a force to be reckoned with. Enquist should have focused more on her, or else made Struensee more interesting.

1 out of 5 stars Repetitious, Reduntant, Reiterative.......2006-01-10

[...]Recommended to me by a colleague, this novel is largely unreadable. It's the prose. Horrid. A single sentence is written as many ways as possible, as closely as possible. That is, a given sentence resembles several other sentences on the same page. You see, the same thing is written over and over again. Just as you think you are getting a break, the sentence, which is repetitious, redundant, and reiterative, rears its ugly head yet again. Get the picture? It's like See Dick Run. Run, Dick, run. Annoying, yes?

My desire to politely finish a recommended book couldn't overcome the headache I got from reading this tedious novel. In fact, I read only the first hundred pages or so, then tried skimming from there--to no avail. Perhaps, as many critics seem eager to point out, Enquist's work is enlightened and masterly. But the prose is the worst I can recall having read. I'll give Enquist the benefit of the doubt and assume that what translated to English as garble was stylistically pleasing in the Swedish. In the end though, the writing obscures any positive attributes. As much as I hate to dissuade anyone from reading anything, I'd strongly advise passing on The Royal Physician's Visit. Try The Charterhouse of Parma by Stendhal for a worthy historical novel. The style is brilliant and the novel is a true masterwork.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2004-09-08

I was very disappointed. This reads more like a history book with occasional quotes thrown in. It is at times redundant. It is slow and difficult to read. This is not for the leisure reader who enjoys history mixed with fiction.

5 out of 5 stars SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THE STATE OF DENMARK..........2003-12-09

Having read "Lost Queen" by Norah Lofts, which book was a work of historical fiction that covered much of the same story told by this author, there could not be two books more different, though both are riveting. The major difference is in the writing style. The book by Ms. Lofts is superlative and tells an interesting, intriguing, though somewhat superficial story about the love triangle consisting of the mad king of Denmark, Christian VII, his wife, Queen Caroline Mathilde, and the royal physician, Johann Struensee. This author, on the other hand, rips the reader's guts out with its angst filled, staccato telling of the same story. It is a more literary book than that of Ms. Lofts and compelling in its own way, a beautifully written work of historical fiction that will keep the reader riveted to its pages until the very end.

It, too, tells the story of Princess Caroline Mathilde of England, sister to King George III. At the age of fifteen she was wed to young King Christian VII, who eventually became known as the mad king of Denmark. Temperamental, high strung, and given to strange outbursts, his predilection for odd behavior was known early on, but despite this the two kingdoms would still see these two wed, as the unification of England and Denmark was more important than individual happiness.

King Christian VII was a truly pitiable figure who had survived a childhood fueled by rank cruelty and was easy prey for the sycophants of the Danish court. He developed a peculiar aversion to his wife and, consequently, had conjugal relations with her only once, which propitiously resulted in the birth of a son nine months later. Alone in a foreign country, whose language she was only beginning to learn, and estranged from a King surrounded by sycophants, the young queen gravitated to the one person who treated her as a person in her own right, the King's physician, Johann Struensee.

An advocate of the philosophy of Enlightenment that was overtaking Europe, the idealistic Struensee had many ideas that were introduced as reforms in Denmark, through his influence with the King, who by now was easily led, since his madness left a void in leadership that Struensee was all to happy to fill. These reforms were to make many enemies for him, as they upset the established feudal system that still existed in eighteenth century Denmark. As he gained power through his influence, resentment against him grew within those circles that had formerly been close to the King. Unaware of the growing animosity against him and lacking political canniness, Struensee and the Queen became close intimates, bound by shared ideas and interests.

Struensee's relationship with the Queen, who was lonely and starved for affection, eventually transgressed the bounds set by propriety. Now lovers in fact, their relationship became grist for the rumor mill. She even gave birth to a daughter who the King acknowledged as his own but who was actually Stuensee's. As gossip and innuendo about their relationship swirled across royal circles in Europe, it ultimately became the focal point for a political coup that saw them both arrested and charged with treason. It was a relationship that was to have great personal and political ramifications for the protagonists, as well as for Denmark. What ultimately happened to each of them was tragic, governed as it was by the initial reluctance of the Danes to give up their feudal system. Even those whom Struensee championed through his reforms, the peasant class, turned against him in the end.

This is a richly atmospheric work of historical fiction, filled with political intrigue, historical personages and events, shadowed by darkness and a palpable sorrow apparent in each and every one of its pages. It is as if the individual psyche of each of the protagonists were driving the book, giving it texture, shadings, and glimpses into the psyche of those involved in this high drama. It is an angst filled, almost surreal, rendering of lives that were to come together and leave a mark on the world, making for a story that to this day has the power to captivate the reader. Bravo!

        Book Description

More than any other English monarch before or since, Queen Elizabeth I used her annual progresses to shape her royal persona and to bolster her popularity and authority. During the spring and summer, accompanied by her court, Elizabeth toured southern England, the Midlands, and parts of the West Country, staying with private and civic hosts, and at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The progresses provided hosts with unique opportunities to impress and influence the Queen, and became occasions for magnificent and ingenious entertainments and pageants, drawing on the skills of architects, artists, and craftsmen, as well as dramatic performances, formal orations, poetic recitations, parades, masques, dances, and bear baiting. The Progresses, Pageants, and Entertainments of Queen Elizabeth I is an interdisciplinary essay collection, drawing together new and innovative work by experts in literary studies, history, theatre and performance studies, art history, and antiquarian studies. As such, it will make a unique and timely contribution to research on the culture and history of Elizabethan England. Chapters include examinations of some of the principal Elizabethan progress entertainments, including the coronation pageant Veritas temporis filia (1559), Kenilworth (1575), Norwich (1578), Cowdray (1591), Bisham (1592), and Harefield (1602), while other chapters consider the themes raised by these events, including the ritual of gift-giving; the conduct of government whilst on progress; the significance of the visual arts in the entertainments; regional identity and militarism; elite and learned women as hosts; the circulation and publication of entertainment and pageant texts; the afterlife of the Elizabethan progresses, including their reappropriation in Caroline England and the documenting of Elizabeth's reign by late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century antiquarians such as John Nichols, who went on to compile the monumentalThe Progresses of Queen Elizabeth (1788-1823).

This book gives a deep insight into the protocols and systems required in the 16th century to maintain the monarchy in a position of strength while still governing a somewhat turbulent nation.Good research brings life to places, people and events. The wider political problems of Elizabeths reign rightly take second place to the general day to day requirements of a the Tudor nobility to sustain the rigours of court functions by laying heavy demands upon local landowners and their like.A book for those with both a deep and those with a more peripheral interest in Elizabethan history

This is a light, well-done, entertaining short novel that reads like a
cross between a good Andre Norton and the Lord of Light Zelazny. The
setup is familiar: hi-tech immortal humans (the Powers) are lording it
over lo-tech tribesmen. Here, the immortal Powers are, well, really,
*really* powerful (see Zelazny), but bored, so a few of them went
looking for a lost colony as a lark. They found the colonists, liked
their world, and some of them found out they liked being Gods. But

mostly they relaxed into a nice, slow, 400-year vacation. Until one of
the oldest, meanest, weirdest immortals decides he'd really like to rule
                a galactic empire...

Fortunately the old weirdo is pretty dumb, and is brought to heel by a
plucky tribesman and a sneaky immortal. One could quibble with some of
the story logic, but that seems pointless in a book that so nicely
accomplishes its goal of entertaining the reader for a few hours.
Anyway, if you like Norton & Zelazny, you should look for DW.

Arthur C. Clarke said "and sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishible from magic." Denner's Wreck takes that concept to the logical extreme.

Imagine, if you will, that a group of bored vacationers, made nearly immortal and omnipotent through technology, come upon a planet populated by the decendants of colonists who crashed there centuries earlier. This "native" population, which has reverted to hunter/gatherer and subsistance farmer society, views the newcomers as gods, and swiftly include these "Powers" in their mythology. If you can imagine that, you've got the premise for Denner's Wreck.

Several different stories some together to form a seamless tapestry which is a joy to read. One one level, Bredon the Hunter must come to terms with the idea that the gods he has grown up beliving in are merely people not unlike himself who posess sophisticated technology beyond anything he could have imagined. Intertwined with that are several moral issues: Are the "natives" of Denner's Wreck less human because they lack the technology? ... ...

The author laces all these ideas (and more) with a good dose of humor that makes the book a fun a surprisingly quick read. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who comes across a copy.

3 out of 5 stars quick delightful read.......1999-11-05

I thought this book was pretty cool. A bunch of vacationing misfits from an ultra advanced civilization take up residence for a couple of hundred years on an out of the way planet. They are interpreted by the locals, ancestors of a colony ship that wrecked on the planet about 600 years ago as gods similar to those in greek and roman mythology. The locals are primitive, technologically speaking, and with their superior technology this group of vacationers basically lead experience self indulgence to the fullest. the plot is quite simple, one of these vacationers, who was a deposed galactic emperor thousands of years ago wants to rebuild his empire, using the planet of "short-lifers" (technologically deprived) as a starting point. Most of the immortals (who really just rely on all kinds of neat gadgets) are mostly all too complacent and wrapped up in their own twisted worlds as demi-gods to care much about it. A short-lifer and one of the demi-gods know has "Gest" (for his penchant for playing pranks, the equivalent of Pan I would say) stumble onto this empire building scheme and attempt to foil it. In the course of trying to recruit help and stop the would be conqueror, the short-lifer, Aredon, learns the secrets of the immortals and simultaneously changes the snobbish viewpoint the vacationers have held of the locals.

Anyway, there are some cool ideas like bent space storage, skull liner computers, and AI's and other techniques the vacationers use to live in a world of total indulgence. At the beginning of each chapter, a story told in the form of a myth, or encounter with a god, is told from the perspective of the local storyteller describing an encounter with one of the "gods"

I found it randomly at a used bookstore and am glad to have read it. If you see it, pick it up!

Like all humans on the planet called Denner's Wreck - survivors of an ancient catastrophe - he lived a peaceful, primitive existence. But unlike the others, he did not fear the newly arrived beings, said to be awesome gods. For as he penetrated their domain, he discovered the truth behind their extraordinary powers - their malicious tricks, petty feuds, deadly weapons... and evil designs on his innocent world."

I read this based on a *very* enthusiastic review from Steve Parker [G00GLE]:
I don't know exactly *why* I like it so much...it's an excellent
story, great characters, very well told, but there are other books
done similarly well that I don't love so much. I like the theme, but
there've been other with the same theme. I dunno.

I'm giving it an A+, with the caveat that I realize not everyone will
be as affected by _Denner's Wreck_ as I am.
Seemingly effortless in it's portrayal of a complex subject, I agree with the other reviewers who consider this the best book on Druidry available. I only wish I had found it 15 years ago! Easy to understand, accurate, encompassing a wide variety of topics, practical, well organized & engrossing. Kudos to Graeme Talboys!

4 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the literature.......2007-02-08

Graeme Talboys is to be congratulated on the writing of such an effortlessly readable yet intellectually satisfying account of the history, nature and practice of the modern Druidic tradition. This book is written for Druids and non-Druids alike and both will learn from it. The book begins with a succinct but useful history of the Celts and then proceeds through philosophy, cosmology, ritual and practice. One of the most difficult aspects in writing a book of this type is getting the structure right - taking the reader through the various aspects of Druidy in such a way that they receive the right information in the right quantity and in the right order; this is the book's strength. The writing at times seems to suggest a preference for solitary practice over the institutional. His section on modern organisations could have offered the reader more information on contemporary orders. It was interesting to note that the Bibliography contains no books by either Philip Carr Gomm or Emma Restall Orr, both leading figures in major contemporary Druid communities. The Way of The Druid is an excellent addition to contemporary writing on modern Druidry and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about its beliefs rituals and practice.

This should be required reading for all Druids, from aspirant to sage. It philosophically drills down to the core of essential ideas and the very nature of druidic spirituality. It gets below the surface idea of a druid and outlines Celtic thought and how it applies today. Best book on Druidry I've read so far.

The last year some fine books have come out on the druid way. I have read quite a few books on celtic religion and druidism. Mr. Talboys new book covers it all from the ancient to the modern "druid way". His insights are great and his understanding of the ancient celtic worldview super. The book my be a big step for someone new to the druid path. For people who are looking for ancient and modern wisdom of the druid path..this is it. I really can't say enough good things about this book! Buy, read, and learn from a great druid! You will have a better understanding of the druid path after the read.

The religion practiced by the ancient Celts and their priests the Druids, is and will always be a mystery. It is sad to see people wishing, hoping, and praying that they could defy logic and physics and go back in time figuratively or otherwise and follow "Druidism." The sad truth is they would probably tell the Druids they were not worshipping or performing their rites in a historically accurate way either! What these folks believe actually happened is just pure fantasy. They have no crystal ball into the past and are just as at a loss as the historians and archeologists investigating the ancient Celts using scientific means.

The fact is Druidry is a modern manifestation and at best based upon guesses at what the ancient Celtic religion was. Philip makes no bones about it. He is not saying in any of his texts that what he is presenting is the unchanged religion of the Celts. Would we or could we really follow the ancient religion in its entirety today? Do we have the same exact needs, hopes, or world-views? A great deal of history has happened since then.

What Philip does provide is another spiritual path or way for the modern individual; the Druid Way. The Druid Way is not an ancient religion brought out of context for a modern age but a modern look at an ancient religion which can be of use and import for us today.

I have researched the ancient Celts extensively and yet this book is one of my favourites! It is a very enjoyable read.

Philip Carr-Gomm's intelligence - not unlike Andrew Harvey's - has a bright, mercurial and energizing quality that immediately stimulates interest and attention. Far superior to a rote historical study, his book is an experiential pilgrimage, a first-hand account that could only be charted by someone as sufficiently steeped in the ideas from the inside of his skin as is Philip. And here is where it begins: high on the downlands above Lewes on the South Downs Way, as he stands on Itford Hill at the outset of his circular journey of excursion and return. From here, in twenty-one chapters, he unfolds a compelling narrative that is both story and exploration, memory and discourse, homily and lyric exposition, coloured with his own immediate psychic perception.
`I plead very guilty to being indeed my own ancestor', as Nuinn is quoted in the book...and what is everywhere present here is the presence of the past that the whole landscape resonates, and that Philip unearths, naming original place names, tracking lost paths gone to grass and cut through by our present roads - and he does so with a sense of detail reminiscent of Gilbert White, though his canvas is larger.

This whole book is a delight. It is the diary of a sacred journey, through sacred space, and through the heart and mind, as well as a useful practical guide to the countryside and its associations and history. It is a book to use and to keep and to remember.

                        4 out of 5 stars Great read........2000-07-12

Once again, Philip Carr-Gomm is NOT an anthropologist and hisbooks are NOT about the ancient druids. Druidry is a modern beliefwith only occasional ties to events/beliefs of 2000 years ago, just as modern Christianity is.

I finished this book with a feeling of peace, it was almost a meditation to read it. However, I got very little practical information out of it. I certainly don't feel that it is "a complete description of the Druid Way." The comments by the author are closer to the book than the "synopsis" is. Wonderfully written, this book brings together a stroll around the countryside with the grief of a loss of a friend to show a path to enlightenment through the power and beauty of the earth.

...if you want to know about ancient druids, check out "The Druids" by Stuart Piggot or "The Celts" by T. G. E. Powell. The fact of the matter is the historical druids committed very little to paper until after they were assimilated into the Culdee church. And that all had the taint of Christianity on it.

                        Product Description

History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Long before Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, or Isaac Asimov, there was an earlier generation of dreamers and writers who defined the science-fiction genre, in what today is affectionately known as the pulp era. Heralding back to the early television days of Flash Gordon and the earlier tales of Jules Verne, Bram Stoker, and H. G. Wells, these great science-fiction writers of the 1950s and 1960s included among their ranks such icons as Poul Anderson and the prolific Robert Silverberg, who would write some of the hippest genre literature of its era.

Now you can experience this unique moment in genre literature with three exciting, imaginative short novellas from some of the pioneers of pulp science fiction.
