Book Description
Kara Testers (Pigeon for short) leads a promiscuous, teenage lifestyle. The Pigeon was not much to look at, but to members living in Boringsville, Pennsylvania she was perceived as a sex goddess. Hey, they liked how her body looked, and forgot to balance her many flaws into the equation.
Monogamy is not kewl in the eyes of the Pigeon. Why would it be? She needs to be with as many people as she can. Throughout the sagas Pigeon Kara comes in contact with BoringsvilleÂ's finest: imbeciles, psychos, jocks, normal guys, stoners, and even rednecks, which presents drama for the Pigeon. Pigeon Kara shows no shame for her promiscuous activity.
Dating is brought to a whole new level when Pigeon Kara flies with it. Therefore, that can only lead to one thingÂ
sex. At the end of the day the Pigeon wants love. For her, it is a lifelong struggle.

Wonderful book!.......2007-02-01
You know I got the book and had a blast reading it! I am glad I got it and if you want a good book pick it up!
kept me interested.......2007-01-19
This book was about a girl named Kara and her stories of a life as a pigeon. It jumps around to differant stories that in the end all fit together. This book kept me interested untill the end and more and more interested in the characters and how they fit together so I do suggest you give it a try!!
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. Soooooo Horrible........2006-12-22
I thankfully didn't actually buy this book. The 13-year-old sister of a friend of mine somehow ended up with a copy that was floating around her school, and I picked it up and read a few chapters out of curiosity.
I have never read anything worse than this in my life. The only thing that comes close is the utterly incoherant MySpace pages of teenage girls and the braindead guys who love them. Seriously, I have no idea if this is based on an actual person, or if its all made up, and I honestly don't care; either way, this book is a travesty, and the fact that Amazon is selling it is completely nauseating.
I just don't even know where to begin. Its soooooo bad. The writing is almost inconcievably poor. The characters are one dimensional at best. The subject matter is as disgusting as it is far fetched. And the entire premise is trivial.
No redeeming value at all. Not one thing.
More sexy than funny.......2006-12-07
This is an interesting piece of literature, though it has been said that it's funny and sexy, it's more sexy. Even sad in a few parts, but a good read, and well written. Buy this book.

Just a Ghost of Conan..........2006-08-04
Unlike Loren Coleman's 1st Age of Conan trilogy, this latest start to another set of trilogies left me flat. The premise was good, but the pace and prose left much to be disired.
Thus, the lack of tons of good reviews - or reviews period!
Even though I didn't think Loren Coleman's trilogy was worthy of the Robert E. Howard Conan name attached to it - it stood alone on its merit. It didn't capture the essence of Conan for me, but was still a solid trilogy in its own world. Just not Howards.
This one less so. Reads like it was for elementary school kids. Sorry, but if you are going to write in the realm of Conan - only rated R will do!
A fun read........2006-03-16
Being a Robert E. Howard fan, I'm excited that someone has finally started writing other stories taking place in his Hyborian age. However, it has to be done right, if not for the entertainment values, then out of respect for REH. Mariotte does that here. Of all the places and peoples of the Hyborian world to write a story, none better could be picked then the Pictish frontier. Howard himself wrote of his fascination with the Picts.
A forbidden friendship (hinting of future romance) between a young Pictish warrior, Kral, and an Aquilonian ambassador's daughter, Alanya, gives an ambitious uncle the excuse to break the fragile truce of the frontier. After his clan is massacred, Kral fights a one man war against the empire and starts his quest to return the sacred Teeth of the Ice Bear. Alanya becomes his ally as she must right the wrongs done against her and her family.
I do question a couple things that Mariotte has in this story. I'm not sure what the Aquilonion policy would be with the Pictish people, since Howard wrote of the racial hatred between King Conan's people, the Cimmierians, and the Picts. Then again, if anyone could understand and respect the savage Picts, it would be the ultimate barbarian himself. Also, Mariotte's take on the Picts isn't as brutal as the way Howard wrote of them (in Howard's stories, "brutal", would be a compliment). Of course, we must remember this story is told more from the Picts's side then any of Howard's.
At times the story seems a little simplistic, but that's only part of the fun. This story reminds me of the books like, ERB's Tarzan and REH's original Conan stories, that I loved so much as an adolescent. It's only a couple hundred pages long with short, to-the-point chapters, and all wrapped in a cover sporting the exiting illustrations that make you daydream of barbaric warriors and exotic beauties. I can't wait for the next book.

Excellent entry in an excellent series........2005-03-15
The "Star Trek SCE" series is written about the "Starfleet Corps of Engineers", which are the topnotch engineers sent in to solve puzzles that have stumped the engineers on an individual ship. It's an interesting idea, very much more traditional science fiction rather than the space opera that is commonly seen in most "science fiction" these days; more attention is paid to the science, without sacrificing plot or character developement.
On the down side, I wasn't quite as taken with the stories in this book as I was with those in the first two entries in the series; on the up side, while book one ended on a cliffhanger and book two therefore started in midstory, this book did not resort to such cheap methods of keeping us interested; it began and ended as a self-contained set of stories.
I Continue To Gush........2003-06-29
I believe I've said this already, but I think this S.C.E. idea was about the best ever (you GO, DeCandido!), and this next batch was no exception to that idea. Waiting for the paperbacks puts me woefully behind the eBooks, this I know, but my patience has been consistently rewarded with each new publication.
In Book Three, we get eBook stories 9-12, and each one is a separate little thrill ride into the S.C.E. universe. And I guess what I'm most impressed with is the continuity of character development and growth throughout each author's writing. That can't be an easy task, especially when the authors are also charged with writing a compelling plot.
If you're like me and don't really care for the eBook format, but are interested in learning about the Starfleet team that goes in to clean up the messes, I *highly* recommend these books. Fast-paced but complex, with great character development and depth.
Good job, I say! Don't stop!
ST-SCE Book #3: Some Assembly Required.......2003-04-23
Star Trek-Starfleet Corps of Engineers Book #3: Some Assembly Required is an anthology of four stort stories involving the the corps of engineers first appearing as ebooks and now is in printed form.
"Some Assembly Required" contains:
"The Riddled Post" written by Aaron Rosenberg
"Here, There be Monsters" written by Keith R.A. Decandido
"Ambush" written by Dave Galanter and Greg Brodeur
"Some Assembly Required" written by Scott Ciencin and Dave Jolley
In this book the stories contain high-tech action-adventure and it will keep your attention. The stories are written as short stories and they are written as building on one another. As the stories building to an exciting climax and they have some very clever solutions.
I liked the way the stories are written and the way plot is laid out and the action moves quickly... but the character development is not lacking and it gives the reader a sense of being within the confines of the story... like your in the middle of all of the action.
As each story is written as a complete stand alone story, there are references in each to past adventures making for intresting reading. You'll be engrossed in the story and wanting the characters to succed in each adventure.
This anthology covers story #9 through #12 of the ebook series and the corps of engineers work at solving problems. This is a fresh addition to the Star Trek series and you'll be fascinated as a group of giant monsters fall through an interdimensional gateway, the engineers work on a planetary computer system, solve a mystery of an outpost riddled by a strange new weapon, and defeat a foe who has the corps outgunned in an exciting space battle.
Have tech, will travel is the corps motto and Starfleet's miracle worker will take you on a journey you will not soon forget.
Fabulous continutaiton of the series!.......2003-04-05
I originally read all the S. C. E. novellas in eBook form. But I pick up the paperback print compilations as an excuse to re-read them! S. C. E. is probably the best Star Trek series and these 4 stories are excellent, building up the crew and giving them character. At about this point in the series, you really start to care about the characters. I heartily reccomend this book and the entire S. C. E. series to anyone who's look for a well-written series that is a new twist on Star Trek.

Book Description
George Bradley, whose previous work has drawn praise from James Merrill and Harold Bloom, here meditates on contemporary culture, on the natural world and the world imagined, and on the life of the poet. Whether he is standing in line at the SuperSave, where tabloids beckon, or contemplating the change of seasons in a classic sonnet sequence, Bradley juxtaposes the sublime workings of the mind with the mundane static that surrounds it. What he finds in this conjunction is a surprising beauty, a uniquely contemporary formal music, and, often, a curative dose of humor. Even verse itself is not exempt from his clarifying view, as he proves in “How I Got in the Business,” a wild ride through several sorts of commerce, including the poetry trade. Throughout Some Assembly Required, Bradley savors both the riveting accident of everyday life and the long view afforded by art, in poetry that is taut, witty, and dynamic.
Customer Reviews:
Poetry's best kept secret.......2003-01-04
After four dazzling books, George Bradley is one of the best kept secrets in contemporary American poetry. A writer whose subjects range from science and philosophy to Renaissance art and everyday life, he writes beautiful, funny, and extremely smart poetry. Try "How I Got in the Business" for a hilarious narrative that parallels the poetry biz with raising and producing olive oil for a mafia family. This poem is the author's second Georgic (his first was "A Georgic for Doug Crane," which told in equally funny detail how to raise, press, and bottle grapes). In both, the laughter gives way to reflection, and ultimately, beauty by the end. It's Bradley's signature gesture--the sudden turn from irreverence to lyric grace. Here, he pulls the trick off again and again: in shorter poems, like "A Poet in the Kitchen" and "My Poem Meets Tamerlane," as well as in the gorgeous sonnet sequence on the turn of the seasons, "A Year in New England."
Did you think you had a great vocabulary?.......2002-05-16
Just wait until you read George Bradley. He's standing on the shoulders of Webster's Unabridged. He picks great words and then darn if he doesn't know how to put them together. If you've got your heart set on reading poetry that will give you chill-bumps, this book is the one to buy.

Not "that" Scott Thompson.......2002-06-28
I found this enjoyable book by accident. I searched for books by "Scott Thompson" of "Kids in the Hall" fame, but I happened upon this little jewel. (It's not "that" Scott Thompson, but it's still a Scott Thompson I'd like to meet and call a friend!) At first I was a little worried. The title made me think I was going to be in for PFD humor...sort of like the Queens of Comedy (No, again, not Scott Thompson). This book is filled with good humor ideas that you can use as your own without giving credit to the author. Plus, it's not a very popular book, so no one will ever catch you. I had my friends in stiches with props I made by stitching. Literally! This book doesn't guarantee you'll become a college favorite like Carrot Top, but it won't hurt. A must have for any do-it yourselfer or amateur prop comedian.
Not What I Had Hoped For.......2001-08-18
After just seeing Carrot Top's road show, I was hell bent on buying absolutely anything Carrotty! (He's amazing) But, when I bought this book, I was hoping for something a little more biographical. This book is full of prop pictures, and that's about it. And, it is not nearly as amusing as I thought it would be, which proves that the humor is mainly in Carrot's live delivery of the props. Not bad, but not great.
THE BEST BOOK EVER.......2000-11-20
Hillarious from beginning to end.I couldn't belive a book could be this funny, or touching I found myself being moved at least fifty times. Carrot Top is a true genius.
Book Description
Michael Sorkin is widely hailed as one of the best architecture critics writing today. Iconoclastic and often controversial, he is a witty, entertaining, yet ultimately serious writer. In this new collection, Sorkin reviews the state of contemporary architecture and surveys the dramatic changes in the urban environment of the past decade. From New York to New Delhi, from Shanghai to Cairo, Sorkin offers a sweeping assessment of the impact of globalization, environmental degradation, electronic media, rapid growth, and the legacies of modernist planning. Whether laying out, manifesto-like, eleven necessary tasks for urban design, providing a fresh take on the Disneyfication of Times Square, grappling with sprawl, or blasting the nostalgic prescriptions of "new urbanist" communities (which he dubs "Reaganville"), Sorkin makes a compelling argument for an architecture and urbanism firmly grounded in both artistic expression and social purpose.
Michael Sorkin is principal of the Michael Sorkin Studio and professor of architecture and director of the graduate urban design program at New York's City College. He is the author of Giving Ground (with Joan Copjec, 1999), Wiggle (1998), Exquisite Corpse (1994), and Variations on a Theme Park (1991), and his writing has appeared in the Village Voice, Metropolis, the New York Times Magazine, and other publications.

Book Description
. . . a cult, a deviant subculture, a revolutionary movement . . . these descriptions have been commonly used in the past to identify the Rastafari, a group perhaps best known to North American readers for their gift of reggae music to the world. With both compassion and a sharp sense of reality, anthropologist William Lewis suggests alternative perspectives and reviews existing social theories as he reports on the diverse world of the ganga- smoking Rastafari culture. He carefully examines this culture in its confrontations with the law, its growing ambivalence about itself as well as the continued conflict between many Rasta and contemporary middle-class values. Characterized by rich ethnographic detail, an engaging writing style, and thoughtful commentary, Soul Rebels uncovers the complex inner workings of the Rasta movement and offers a critical analysis of the meaning of Rastafari commitment and struggles. Soul Rebels offers a solid historical overview of the movement, an excellent picture of diversity within the faith, fair and accurate discussions of sexism among the Rasta, engaging life history material, and rich descriptions of what actually goes on in a "reasoning" session. Lewis's treatment of Rastafari populations in a Jamaican fishing village, an Ethiopian market town, and an urban neighborhood in the northeastern United States sets his ethnography in the crosscultural and comparative framework central to anthropological analysis.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good, Not Sensational.......2003-06-11
I knew a little bit about Rastafarianism before reading this book. Primarily, I knew about some of the religious underpinnings and of course, the use of ganja in religious practice. What I didn't know about Rastafarianism, however, was Rastafarianism as a political and economic policy, one which renounces much of the governmental and economic structure that is such a part of our modern, globalized world. The author, a Jesuit priest, definitely brings an interesting perspective to the book, which my anthropology professor suggested is why the women of Rastafarianism seem to have such a minor role in this book. While this is definitely a valid criticism, the book is actually one of the more interesting and least sensational books I have read on the subject. Indeed, it makes me want to be a Rasta!
A Useful Social Introduction.......2003-01-09
Although this book does not go into a large amount of detail, it is a quick and useful introduction to the Rastafarian way of life, at least on the social and economic side. William Lewis has based his work on direct interviews and observations with Rastas that he has met, so the book focuses on their social interactions, lifestyles, and viewpoints on the world around them. However, you have to wonder if those particular Rastas were being truthful because Lewis is a white Roman Catholic priest (although this does not infringe on his view of other cultures and religions). Lewis includes case studies of both urban and rural Rastas in Jamaica, a group in a large US city, and the interesting case of a "repatriated" group in Ethiopia. There is an interesting aside in the study of the US urban Rastas, as Lewis keeps the name of the city confidential to protect his subjects from prosecution, but later in the book he accidentally tells us that it was Brooklyn. This book is lacking in deeper insights into the true religious nature of Rastafari, as Lewis' historical backdrop to the development of the belief system is rather quick and sketchy, and there is little more than superficial coverage of the complicated Rasta belief system. It would have also been nice to see more on the direct influence of Haile Selassie rather than just his historical inspiration, and also how the religion adapted to his death (the Rastas literally thought he was the messiah). If you already know something about Rastafari, you probably won't learn much new here. So this book is most useful as an introduction which may inspire you to explore more in-depth studies elsewhere.
