One of the first female artists to achieve recognition in her own time, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653) became instantly popular in the 1970s when feminist art historians "discovered" her and argued vehemently for a place for her in the canon of Italian baroque painters. Featured alongside her father, Orazio Gentileschi, in a recent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Artemisia has continued to stir interest though her position in the canon remains precarious, in part because her sensationalized life history has overshadowed her art.
In The Artemisia Files, Mieke Bal and her coauthors look squarely at this early icon of feminist art history and the question of her status as an artist. This is definatly the best small book I purchased this year. I was truly amazed at how and what is compiled in this book. Gruau's work is perfectly exhibited. There is much more Gruau out there but I feel this is a great starter for anyone who has just discoverd this extraordinary illustrator.

This book covers the whole range of Gruau's career, and offers a chance to watch his talent blossom and mature(and ultimately fall victim to the hideous designs of the 70's). While not as big or impressive as the book published by TeNeues (ISBN: 3823809989 ), it is also more affordable.
The Fashion Play On Colours.......1999-11-29
What strikes me the most about the art of Gruau is the wonderful play of colors, solid reds with touches of blacks as highlights. Gruau's art seem so effortless and light yet you can actually see the texture of the materials being portrayed. One of the best fashion illustrators, combining simplicity with drama, and well defined brush strokes.
Think of Gruau's work as Chinese artwork combined with fashion and screaming colors.

This volume of Gruau's art is astonishingly beautiful. The paper, print and the color are of high quality, There are more than 100 plates, mostly in color, each devoid of text and page numbers. For easy reference there are numbered thumbnails at the back of the book. This man's portrayal of women and fashion is mesmerizing. His economy of line, portrayal of movement and use of color are breathtaking. The expression of emotion on these pages almost "speaks out loud". Although brimming with style and sophistication, to limit Mr. Gruau's art and this book to the category of fashion would be an injustice. This is true art and there is much to be learned from studying these drawings. What a treasure!

This is a wonderfully illustrated collection of Gruau's work that cannot be found anywhere else. The colors are breathtaking and the images are larger than life. If you like fashion illustration, you will not be disapointed by Gruau's work. He is in a class by himself. Chic, stylish and unique!

This book is absolutely gorgeous and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who loves art and design books. His work is beautiful and it captures the elegance and glamour of the fashion world. His use of line and colour is simple but perfect and it fills each image with life and emotion.
The book itself is well thought-out. The first section is devoted to information about the artist, along with some photographs. The majority of the book is devoted to his work, with each image given an entire page, with no text or even a page number to detract from it. The last section has information on each of the individual pieces in the main section. It even has thumbnails of each piece to save flipping back and forth(handy since there are no page numbers!!) I absolutely love this book!!! It may be expensive, but it's well worth the money.

Breathtakingly, heartbreakingly BEAUTIFUL!.......2000-03-18
I had never heard of Rene Gruau until I saw the book on display at a local bookstore. As I started to open the book, I figured that the inside couldn't possibly be as beautiful as the cover (see above). I'm happy to say that this big book is awe-inspiringly beautiful from cover to cover. Many times I would turn a page and gasp at the bold design, fluid line, aggressive color and sheer brilliance of composition. I know nothing about fashion, but I know what I like. If you like Mucha, Klimt, Scheile, Petty (not to mention Japanese brush and ink) you'll love this book. Even at that price, it's a bargain!

This book is a parody to itself........2005-12-03
I was not expecting this book to be nearly as funny as the Worst Case Scenario series, but even with low expectations, this book left me completely underwhelmed. If you've read the WCS books, don't buy this one, its not even remotely amusing. The scenarios are interesting to imagine, but the "tips" this guy gives do not have the same "over the top" humor that the WCS books have. In fact, the introduction says "open the book to any page and you will find it so funny you will buy the book." Not true at all.
One of the things that made the WCS books great is the illustrations. This book features an old balding guy in every illustration (is he supposed to be the author?).
I only purchased this book because an Amazon 3rd party seller had it for 70 cents, which still seems like a rip off to me.

This book is spectacular. The scenarios are far-out but holarious none the less. However, the only fault I found was the excessive reference to sexual themes. I didn't think that was necessary.

This book is kinda cheesy. It makes you think it is going to peak some time, and make you pee in your pants laughing. I kept waiting for it to capture me and turn into a page turner. It's okay but I think a 14-25 year old would be amused with it. Definetly not for scholar readers.
Kinda funny, kinda not.......2002-12-27
While the parody aspect sounded funny, in reality it isn't what it could've been. It's about things that would never happen in a million years (like getting rear-ended by a drunken Bill Gates in traffic-what to do), written to look like the infamous 'Worst Case Scenario' books. I chuckled mildly a few times over the items, but nothing that really cracked me up. There are things like 'What to do if you're stuck on a deserted island with J-Lo', and others along those lines. The laugh factor is medium, and it's a great bathroom book, but not something I will give as a gift again.
