Book Description
The horse was an integral part of Renaissance culture, not only as a beast of burden but also as a sign of rank and status. For the nobility equitation was an essential skill, both socially and militarily. Horses played a pivotal role in warfare and often wore armor as elaborate and expensive as that of their riders.
Drawing exclusively from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this catalogue features various types of European horse armor dating from 1480 to 1620. Splendid examples, many of which are unpublished or rarely seen, are examined in terms of style, construction, and decoration.

The Armoured European Horse.......2007-01-30
This is an exhibition catalog from the exhibit of the same name at the Metropolitan Musuem of Art in NY. I personally visited the exhibition and while the items were interesting, was underwhelmed by the small room that housed it. I was expecting a bigger display.
Most of the pieces in the exhibit are in the catalog along with others that didn't appear. The text is good and I recommend the catalog to anyone interested in early equestrian military pursuits.

Not Very Accurate!.......2007-03-11
First, let me say that this book does say a lot of interesting things about the Old West, like how cowboys dressed in different states, how certain fashions, like bib-front shirts, came to be, and what different professions wore. However, with regards to women's fashion, it got a lot wrong.
A great deal of the information given is generalized--expansive statements that cover the entire Victorian period, but aren't necessarily true for any particular year, and might be outright false during some years. Fashions changed very rapidly during the late 1800s, and something that might've been all the rage in 1890 might have not have even existed in the 1860s or 1870s. And, some of what the book says is outright wrong. For example, at one point it tells us that women wore huge hoopskirts through the whole second half of the 1800s and then styles abrubtly changed to the more practical bloomer. In fact, hoopskirts were only around for a decade or so (considerably smaller than usually depicted on film), and the bloomer was something worn only by a few brave women who were gaped at and criticized.
At some points, the book actually contradicts itself. And, dispite the title, it has very little to say about bustles (unless I somehow skipped a chapter). Some of what it said about men's fashions seemed odd, as well. I would say, buy it if you want to read about the Old West, but take everything it has to say with a grain of salt and verify the information elsewhere if you're interested in accuracy.
Excellent Reference Book for Writers.......2007-02-13
This book contains a great deal of helpful information for anyone wanting to know the clothing styles worn during the frontier period in the old west, whether for research purposes or just for the fun of it.

I had particular interest in reviewing "How the West Was Worn" because of doing family history research. We have many photos of family members and I often wondered about the clothing - how was it made? What fabrics did they use? How did the fashions come to be without television and glossy magazines? Enns answered many of my questions as I read her book with much interest, often looking at actual pictures to see if any of our ancestors were in there.
No different than now, the nineteenth century women were fashion conscious and often wore cumbersome and unrealistic clothing such a hoop skirts, bustles, and leg-o-mutton sleeves that required yards of costly fabric. Fabrics were cotton or linen for the summer, and wool during the winter. Children's clothing was not fashioned for play but as small replicas of their parents. Ruffles were often seen on boys.
The "clothes made the man" and a well dressed man was certainly the talk of the town. Depending on the status or type of work, men dressed accordingly. The type of work they did was easily recognized by the type of clothing they wore.
Did you know that Andrew Johnson, before he became the President of the United States, was a tailor in Raleigh, North Carolina? In 1827 he opened his own business where he designed a variation of the Prince Albert-style coat - double breasted and knee-length. A variation of his creation still exists today.
Enss gives an interesting account of all facets of fashion, from jewelry to hair styles, from under garments to military uniforms, from footwear to chevrons. Anyone with interest in the 19th century era would find "How the West Was Worn" a great book to go through. Although Enss only touches briefly on each item, she gives a list of suggested reading for further knowledge. Highly recommended!

Like Taking a Funny Pill.......2007-02-17
I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.
The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.
FoxTrot the Works. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-20
I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.
Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.

I started reading FOXTROT to relieve myself of the awful day of
September 11th. I didn't think it would be that funny, but when
I read it, I laughed sooooooo hard I almost couldn't breath!
FOXTROT, without question, is one of the 2 funniest comics of
all time! I think CALVIN AND HOBBES and FOXTROT are a tie as the
best strips I've ever read! I own all the books!
If you're in the mood for some great laughs, read FOXTROT!
This book is what made me Love FoxTrot........2005-10-12
I had never read the strip before I had gotten my hands on FoxTrot the Works. Mr. Amend has made a series that calls us back to our younger days. Most every person has had several of these everyday uproars happen to them, be they in the perspective of the parents or the children. FoxTrot the Works is more than worth most anything asked for it.
HAHAHAHAHAHA (cough) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......2005-05-01
I think foxtrot is the most amazing strip. I laugh so much and so hard I dont even have time to cough! as somone else has already gone into detail if you like foxtrot or want to try it read this one first, then foxtrot: en masse then camp foxtrot ect
Book Description
Arriving in Iraq on the eve of the U.S. invasion, unaffiliated with any newspaper and hoping to pick up assignments along the way, Ashley Gilbertson was one of the first photojournalists to cover the disintegration of America’s military triumph as looting and score settling convulsed Iraqi cities. Just twenty-five years old at the time, Gilbertson soon landed a contract with the New York Times, and his extraordinary images of life in occupied Iraq and of American troops in action began appearing in the paper regularly. Throughout his work, Gilbertson took great risks to document the risks taken by others, whether dodging sniper fire with American infantry, photographing an Iraqi bomb squad as they diffused IEDs, or following marines into the cauldron of urban combat.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot gathers the best of Gilbertson’s photographs, chronicling America’s early battles in Iraq, the initial occupation of Baghdad, the insurgency that erupted shortly afterward, the dramatic battle to overtake Falluja, and ultimately, the country’s first national elections. No Western photojournalist has done as much sustained work in occupied Iraq as Gilbertson, and this wide-ranging treatment of the war from the viewpoint of a photographer is the first of its kind. Accompanying each section of the book is a personal account of Gilbertson’s experiences covering the conflict. Throughout, he conveys the exhilaration and terror of photographing war, as well as the challenges of photojournalism in our age of embedded reporting. But ultimately, and just as importantly, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot tells the story of Gilbertson’s own journey from hard-drinking bravado to the grave realism of a scarred survivor. Here he struggles with guilt over the death of a marine escort, tells candidly of his own experience with post-traumatic stress, and grapples with the reality that Iraq—despite the sacrifice in Iraqi and American lives—has descended into a civil war with no end in sight.
A searing account of the American experience in Iraq, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is sure to become one of the classic war photography books of our time.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable........2007-01-02
"Fatherhood" is the second book I've read by Bill Cosby, and I greatly enjoyed it more than "Childhood," as this book covers both what it's like to be a child and a parent. The humor is funny, and while it's not sidesplitting funny, it'll make you chuckle and smile. A good quick read. I recommend.
Endearing tales.......2005-12-24
Bill Cosby's warm and gentle humor is a pleasure to read, and his observations on the travails of parenting will ring true to almost any parent. He highlights kids who don't listen, kids who don't study, kids who won't move out -- and he admits to having a soft heart for all of them. While there are few hard laughs in this book, there are many chuckles and knowing smiles.
By contrast, the introduction and afterword by Alvin F. Poussaint are overlong, stuffy and completely unnecessary. Skip them.
Fatherhood.......2005-05-10
I am a senior in high school, and I have just finished the popular book Fatherhood by Bill Cosby. As most of us already know, Bill Cosby is a comical man. He puts a comedic twist on most everything he says, yet in a serious way. I enjoy how he can mix reailty with comedy, which is why I enjoyed this book so much. I give this book a very high rating and hope others will also.
I am not a father myself, but reading this book gave me advice for the future. The book was set up in chapters that coordinated with the different stages in his kids lives. Bill Cosby talked about the joys of having kids, along with the bad experiences he had with them. He also explained the relationship that he had with his wife, which was interesting. There were many parts in the book that I could relate to within my family. The book was just extraordinary in the details included.
The thing that I liked the most about this book was the fact that he used life like details instead of making his family seem like the Brady Bunch. He wasn't afraid to add embarassing moments he had, or times that frustrated him. The book was overall very intellegently put together. I liked this book, and would reccomend it to others in hopes for help from this expert.
Hilarious.......2004-11-15
I don't even want kids, but I love Bill Cosby so much that I bought the book anyway. I've read both of Ellen's books and Wanda Sykes books, but none of them compare to the humor in Bill Cosby's book. As I read the book, I figured out quickly where several ideas for the Cosby Show derived from--his entertaining FIVE children. From Theo saying "No problem" when it came to his future to the amount of money spent on college to children leaving home to be with their loved ones, Bill Cosby has a way of making the most serious situation hilarious. I loved this book from beginning to end and I read it in two days--both on the treadmill. Note: I can appreciate any book that can make my health club trips seem quick!
The title says it all!.......2004-10-04
This book would be very helpful for all fathers. Nobody knows more about FATHERHOOD than Dr. William H. Cosby Jr. In Cosby's case,FATHERHOOD followed marriage. It could be the opposite but many do not recommend it. This book inspired the original Nick At Nite animated sitcom of the same title, which premiered in June 2004. One of the voices heard is Sabrina LeBeauf's,who was one of Cosby's Cosby Show daughters. Many people who read this book also read TIME FLIES and LOVE & MARRIAGE,also written by Cosby. Cosby in real life and on the Cosby Show is a father of five. I dedicate this book to the memory of Cosby's son Ennis who was murdered in January 1997 at age 27.

"Bill Cosby on Fatherhood" makes a great gift to Dad, whether it be for Father's Day, Christmas (makes a perfect stocking stuffer), Birthday, or any special occasion! Bill Cosby is great in describing Fatherhood memories, of when he was a child, and when he was a father. If you're in the mood for a chuckle, whether you're a Father or not, this is a great little book. I recommend.
